Janus structure hydrogels: recent advances in synthetic strategies, biomedical microstructure and (bio)applications

Janus structure hydrogels (JSHs) are novel materials. Their primary fabrication methods and various applications have been widely reported. JSHs are primarily composed of Janus particles (JNPs) and polysaccharide components. They exhibit two distinct physical or chemical properties, generating intriguing characteristics due to their asymmetric structure. Normally, one side (adhesive interface) is predominantly constituted of polysaccharide components, primarily serving excellent adhesion. On the other side (functional surface), they integrate diverse functionalities, concurrently performing a plethora of synergistic functions. In the biomedical field, JSHs are widely applied in anti-adhesion, drug delivery, wound healing, and other areas. It also exhibits functions in seawater desalination and motion sensing. Thus, JSHs hold broad prospects for applications, and they possess significant research value in nanotechnology, environmental science, healthcare, and other fields. Additionally, this article proposes the challenges and future work facing these fields.

Mesoporous Magnetic/Polymer Hybrid Nanoabsorbent for Rapid and Efficient Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Wastewater

As an advanced water purification technology, magnetic nanoabsorbents are highly attractive for their sustainability, robustness, and energy efficiency. However, magnetic responsiveness and high adsorptive capacity are irreconcilable during the design and synthesis of a high-performance magnetic nanoabsorbent. Here, we address this issue by designing a kind of mesoporous magnetic polymer hybrid microspheres, where functional polymers such as polyrhodanine and polypyrrole were attached to the pore walls in the interior of mesoporous Fe3O4 microspheres through in situ polymerization. Due to the integrated large saturation magnetic moment, porous structure, and dense polymer layer, the mesoporous magnetic polymer hybrid microspheres demonstrated fast magnetic responsiveness, excellent recycling performance, and high adsorption capacities toward Pb(II) ions (189 mg g-1) for polyrhodanine and Cr(VI) ions (199 mg g-1) for polypyrrole. Furthermore, their potential application in wastewater treatment was verified by a self-made magnetic separation column, where the designed magnetic nanoabsorbent exhibits significant advantages including rapid separation of heavy metal ions and high outflow. This study provided a promising magnetic polymer hybrid nanoabsorbent for realizing efficient removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Tetragonal Superlattice of Elongated Rhombic Dodecahedra for Sensitive SERS Determination of Pesticide Residues in Fruit

The self-assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles into highly ordered superlattices could pave the way toward novel nanomaterials for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Here, we propose the formation of large-area superlattices of elongated rhombic dodecahedra in a vertical orientation via a controlled droplet evaporation process. Expectedly, the constant humidity of the experimental condition could control the evaporation speed of droplets and this procedure promotes the balance between driven depletion attraction and electrostatic repulsion in the system, leading to the generation of well-organized three-dimensional (3D) superlattices. The unique geometry of elongated rhombic dodecahedra could establish the tetragonal superlattices, which breaks the conventional hexagonal symmetry of gold nanorods. Specifically, the influence of the type and concentration of surfactants, the concentration of nanoparticles, and the amount of droplets on the preparation results were systematically investigated to find the optimal assembly parameters. Remarkably, such close-packed tetragonal arrays of vertically aligned elongated rhombic dodecahedra exhibit more excellent SERS performance compared with the traditional hexagonal superstructure of gold nanorods. Benefiting from the high sensitivity and reproducibility of elongated rhombic dodecahedron superlattices, their applications in the determination of pesticide residues in apple and grape peels were successfully demonstrated. As a result, this study may advance the production of innovative plasmonic nanomaterials for a broad range of fields.

Preparation of multi-functional magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposite for adsorption and detection of thiram using SERS

Magnetic materials have been widely used for constructing substrate in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing due to the magnetic responsibility. Here, we reported a facile and effective approach to construct multi-functional SERS substrate based on assembling Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on porous Fe microspheres. The porous Fe microspheres were prepared through hydrogen reduction of Fe₂O₃ NPs with porous structure, in which the size and morphology of Fe could be well controlled. The surface of Fe was grafted with amino group, and then decorated with Ag NPs. The surface area and pore size of Fe microsphere were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The Fe@Ag nanocomposite illustrated a good SERS activity. Furthermore, this substrate could be used for pesticide monitoring by portable Raman spectrometer. Especially, the porous Fe microsphere could adsorb analyte from target sample and the Fe@Ag could be concentrated by magnetic force to amplify the SERS signal for thiram detection.

Solvothermal Synthesis of Size-Controlled Monodispersed Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are of great interest in magnetic targeted drug delivery due to their unique properties. In this paper, size-controlled superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized in an ethylene glycol/diethylene glycol (EG/DEG) binary solvent system via a facile solvothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to confirm that the prepared samples were superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres. When the V EG / V DEG was varied from 100/0 to 80/20, 60/40, and 40/60, the average diameters of the resulting Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres were approximately 700, 500, 300, and 100 nm, respectively. In addition, the saturation magnetization ( M s ) of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with a size of 100, 300, 500, and 700 nm was 72.14, 75.94, 80.28, and 85.41 emu/g, and the corresponding remanent magnetization ( M r ) was 3.34, 3.97, 3.26, and 4.28 emu/g, respectively. The relevant formation mechanisms of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are proposed at the end. These superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with high saturation magnetization may have use as targeted drug carriers.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering induced by the coupling of the guided mode with localized surface plasmon resonances

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is considered to be a powerful analysis tool for the detection of molecules due to its ultra-high sensitivity and non-destructive nature. Here, we introduce a new type of hybrid SERS substrate, where gold nanorods are assembled on a structured support containing a top dielectric grating, dielectric spacer and gold mirror. Compared with the conventional metal nanoparticle assemblies on a flat support, our hybrid substrate shows an approximately 30-fold enhancement in the SERS signal. Numerical simulations show that such a substantial boost arises from the amplification of the absorption cross sections of the gold nanorods and the heating of the "hot spots" around the gold nanorods by the coupling between the guided mode in the structured support and the localized surface plasmon resonances. This mode coupling can be easily tuned by changing the thickness of the spacer. In addition, this substrate also presents uniform spot-to-spot and sample-to-sample SERS signals of the analyte molecules (relative standard deviations down to 7.4% and 6.1%, respectively). Moreover, the performance of this substrate has been demonstrated with the detection of melamine and cytosine, suggesting its great potential in food safety regulation and bioassays. This grating-mirror-enhanced strategy is available to any other SERS-active nanoparticles synthesized by chemical methods, which might offer new opportunities for improving the performance of the chemically prepared nanoparticles in realistic SERS-related applications.

Recent Novel Hybrid Pd–Fe3O4 Nanoparticles as Catalysts for Various C–C Coupling Reactions

The use of nanostructure materials as heterogeneous catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds have been receiving more attention in the rapid developing area of nanotechnology. In this review, we mainly focused on our own work on the synthesis of hybrid palladium–iron oxide nanoparticles. We discuss the synthesis of Pd–Fe3O4—both morphology-controlled synthesis of Pd–Fe3O4 and transition metal-loaded Pd–Fe3O4—as well as its application in various C–C coupling reactions. In the case of rose-like Pd–Fe3O4 hybrid nanoparticles, thermal decomposition can be used instead of oxidants or reductants, and morphology can be easily controlled. We have developed a method for the synthesis of nanoparticles that is facile and eco-friendly. The catalyst was recyclable for up to five continual cycles without significant loss of catalytic activity and may provide a great platform as a catalyst for other organic reactions in the near future.

Applications of magnetic nanoparticles in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of environmental pollutants

Environmental pollution, a major problem worldwide, poses considerable threat to human health and ecological environment. Efficient and reliable detection technologies, which focus on the appearance of emerging environmental and trace pollutants, are urgently needed. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has become an attractive analytical tool for sensing trace targets in environmental field because of its inherent molecular fingerprint specificity and high sensitivity. In this review, we focused on the recent developments in the integration of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with SERS for facilitating sensitive detection of environmental pollutants. An overview and classification of different types of MNPs for SERS detection were initially provided, enabling us to categorize the huge amount of literature that was available in the interdisciplinary research field of MNPs based SERS technology. Then, the basic working principles and applications of MNPs in SERS detection were presented. Subsequently, the detection technologies integrating MNPs with SERS that eventually were used for the detection of various environmental pollutions were reviewed. Finally, the advantages of MNP-basedSERS detection technology for environmental pollutants were concluded, and the current challenges and future outlook of this technology in practical applications were highlighted. The application of the MNPs-basedSERS techniques for environmental analysis will be significantly advanced with the great progresses of the nanotechnologies, optics, and materials.

Synthesis and evaluation of the SERS effect of Fe3O4–Ag Janus composite materials for separable, highly sensitive substrates

Fe₃O₄–Ag Janus composites were synthesized using a two-step solvothermal method. The optimal growth process was determined by investigating the relationship between the particle morphologies and reaction time. Magnetic and Raman spectroscopic measurements showed that the as-synthesized Janus composites have both good magnetic response and significant surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effects, as well as reproducibility. The calculated Raman enhancement factor reached an unprecedented magnitude of 10⁹ compared with the values of other Fe₃O₄–Ag compounds. Furthermore, the SERS effect was exhibited even at a concentration of probe molecules as low as 10⁻¹³ M. This demonstrates that the as-synthesized Fe₃O₄–Ag Janus composite particles have promise for application as separable, highly sensitive SERS substrates.

Self-Template Etching Synthesis of Urchin-Like Fe3O4 Microspheres for Enhanced Heavy Metal Ions Removal

Hierachical Fe₃O₄ microspheres with superparamagnetic properties are attractive for their superior structural, water-dispersible, and magnetic separation merits. Here self-template etching route was developed to create optimal porous structure in superparamagnetic Fe₃O₄ microspheres by using the oxalic acid (H₂C₂O₄) as etching agent. A plausible formation mechanism of the urchin-like Fe₃O₄ microspheres was proposed based on systematic investigation of the etching process, which involved two stages including pore-forming step based on size-selective etching and pore-expanding step based on further etching. The as-synthesized Fe₃O₄ microspheres exhibited urchin-like structure with specific surface area and pore-size tunable, water-dispersible, and superparamagnetic properties. The optimal urchin-like Fe₃O₄ microspheres demonstrated superior performance including fast magnetic separation and high removal capabilities for the heavy metals ions like Pb²⁺ (112.8 mg g^-1) and Cr(VI) (68.7 mg g^-1). This work will shed new light on the synthesis of urchin-like microspheres for superior performance.

Highly Efficient, Low-Cost, and Magnetically Recoverable FePt⁻Ag Nanocatalysts: Towards Green Reduction of Organic Dyes

Nowadays, synthetic organic dyes and pigments discharged from numerous industries are causing unprecedentedly severe water environmental pollution, and conventional water treatment processes are hindered due to the corresponding sophisticated aromatic structures, hydrophilic nature, and high stability against light, temperature, etc. Herein, we report an efficient fabrication strategy to develop a new type of highly efficient, low-cost, and magnetically recoverable nanocatalyst, i.e., FePt⁻Ag nanocomposites, for the reduction of methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB), by a facile seed deposition process. X-ray diffraction results elaborate that the as-synthesized FePt⁻Ag nanocomposites are pure disordered face-centered cubic phase. Transmission electron microscopy studies demonstrate that the amount of Ag seeds deposited onto the surfaces of FePt nanocrystals increases when increasing the additive amount of silver colloids. The linear correlation of the MO and RhB concentration versus reaction time catalyzed by FePt⁻Ag nanocatalysts is in line with pseudo-first-order kinetics. The reduction rate constants of MO and RhB increase with the increase of the amount of Ag seeds. FePt⁻Ag nanocomposites show good separation ability and reusability, and could be repeatedly applied for nearly complete reduction of MO and RhB for at least six successive cycles. Such cost-effective and recyclable nanocatalysts provide a new material family for use in environmental protection applications.

Sonochemical synthesis of highly branched flower-like Fe3O4@SiO2@Ag microcomposites and their application as versatile SERS substrates

We report a novel strategy for the synthesis of magnetic-based flower-like silver composite microspheres (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Ag microflowers) with a highly branched shell structure through a sonochemical-assisted method. The obtained Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Ag microflowers possess good dispersity, high magnetic responsiveness, and highly reproducible structures. The size and morphology of the silver petal shell of these microflowers can be easily controlled by varying the experimental parameters. The silver petal provides an effectively large surface area for forming sufficient plasmonic hot spots and capturing target molecules. The microscale magnetic core endows microflowers with superior magnetic nature to enrich targeted analytes and create abundant interparticle hot spots through magnetism-induced aggregation. Hence, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Ag microflowers could be a versatile SERS substrate, as verified by the detection of the non-adsorbed R6G molecules and the adsorbed pesticide thiram, with a detection limit as low as 1 × 10^-14 M and 1 × 10^-11 M, respectively. We further demonstrate that aptamer-functionalized microflowers can easily capture S. aureus in tap water and significantly enhance their SERS signal. Moreover, the microflowers can be easily recycled because of the intrinsic magnetism of the Fe₃O₄ cores, which indicate a new route in eliminating the "single-use" problem of traditional SERS substrates. These advantages make the microflowers powerful SERS probes for chemical and biological analyses.

Polyethylenimine-interlayered core-shell-satellite 3D magnetic microspheres as versatile SERS substrates

Precise fabrication of subtle nanogaps amid individual nanoparticles or between adjacent ones to obtain the highest SERS enhancement is still a challenge. Here, we reported a novel approach for fabricating core-shell-satellite 3D magnetic microspheres (CSSM), that easily form a porous 1.5 nm PEI interlayer to accommodate molecules and create sufficient hotspots between the inner Fe3O4@Ag core and outer assembled Au@Ag satellites. Experiments and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation demonstrated that the enhancement factor (EF) was about 2.03 × 10(8) and 6.25 × 10(6), respectively. In addition, the micro-scale magnetic core endowed the CSSM with a superior magnetic nature, which enabled easy separation and further enhanced Raman signals due to enrichment of targeted analytes and abundant interparticle hotspots created by magnetism-induced aggregation. Our results further demonstrated that the CSSM is expected to be a versatile SERS substrate, which has been verified by the detection of the adsorbed pesticide thiram and the non-adsorbed pesticide paraquat with a detection limit as low as 5 × 10(-12) M and 1 × 10(-10) M, respectively. The novel CSSM can overcome the long-standing limitations of SERS for the trace characterization of various analytes in different solutions and promises to transform SERS into a practical analytical technique.

Growth Mechanism and Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Ag-Fe₃O₄ Core-Shell Nanowires

One-dimensional Ag-Fe3O4 core-shell heteronanowires have been synthesized by a facile and effective coprecipitation method, in which silver nanowires (AgNWs) were used as the nucleation site for growth of Fe3O4 in aqueous solution. The size and morphology control of the core-shell nanowires were achieved by simple adjustments of reaction conditions including FeCl3/FeCl2 concentration, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) concentration, reaction temperature, and time. It was found that the Fe3O4 shell thickness could be tuned from 6 to 76 nm with the morphology variation between nanopheres and nanorods. A possible growth mechanism of Ag-Fe3O4 core-shell nanowires was proposed. First, the C═O derived from PVP on the surface of AgNWs provided nucleation points and in situ oxidation reaction between AgNWs and FeCl3/FeCl2 solution promoted the accumulation of Fe(3+) and Fe(2+) on the AgNWs surface. Second, Fe3O4 nanoparticles nucleated on the AgNWs surface. Lastly, Fe3O4 nanoparticles grew on the AgNWs surface by using up the reagents. Higher FeCl3/FeCl2 concentration or higher temperature led to faster nucleation and growth, resulting in the formation of Fe3O4 nanorods, whereas lower concentration or lower temperature resulted in slower nucleation and growth, leading to the formation of Fe3O4 nanospheres. Furthermore, the Ag-Fe3O4 core-shell nanowires exhibited good electrical properties and ferromagnetic properties at room temperature. Particularly, the magnetic saturation values (Ms) increased from 5.7 to 26.4 emu g(-1) with increasing Fe3O4 shell thickness from 9 to 76 nm. This growth of magnetic nanoparticles on 1D metal nanowires is meaningful from both fundamental and applied perspectives.

Rose-like Pd-Fe3O4 hybrid nanocomposite-supported Au nanocatalysts for tandem synthesis of 2-phenylindoles

A facile synthesis of rose-like Pd-Fe3O4 nanocomposites via controlled thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5 and reduction of Pd(OAc)2, followed by the immobilization of Au nanoparticles (NPs) onto the Pd-Fe3O4 supports, is reported. The morphology of these hybrid nanostructures could be easily controlled by varying the amount of Fe(CO)5 and the reaction temperature. Moreover, the synthesized Au/Pd-Fe3O4 catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity for the tandem synthesis of 2-phenylindoles and demonstrated magnetic recyclability.

Facile solvothermal synthesis of Ag/Fe3O4 nanocomposites and their SERS applications in on-line monitoring of pesticide contaminated water

The dual-functional substrates of Ag/Fe₃O₄ exhibit excellent SERS performance, and have been successfully applied in real-time on-line monitoring of wastewater.

Shape effect of Ag–Ni binary nanoparticles on catalytic hydrogenation aided by surface plasmons

Ag–Ni binary nanoparticles with different shapes (snowman and core–shell) were synthesized by modulating the lattice strain and used as plasmonic catalyst for hydrogenation.
