Abstract
The 29th Annual GP2A (Group for the Promotion of Pharmaceutical chemistry in Academia) Conference was a virtual event this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and spanned three days from Wednesday 25 to Friday 27 August 2021. The meeting brought together an international delegation of researchers with interests in medicinal chemistry and interfacing disciplines. Abstracts of keynote lectures given by the 10 invited speakers, along with those of the 8 young researcher talks and the 50 flash presentation posters, are included in this report. Like previous editions, the conference was a real success, with high-level scientific discussions on cutting-edge advances in the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry.

Copper-Catalyzed C–H Arylation of Fused-Pyrimidinone Derivatives Using Diaryliodonium Salts. Catalysts 2020. Abstract
Copper-catalyzed Csp2–Csp2 bond forming reactions through C–H activation are still one of the most useful strategies for the diversification of heterocyclic moieties using various coupling partners. A catalytic protocol for the C–H (hetero)arylation of thiazolo[5,4-f]quinazolin-9(8H)-ones and more generally fused-pyrimidinones using catalyst loading of CuI with diaryliodonium triflates as aryl source under microwave irradiation has been disclosed. The selectivity of the transfer of the aryl group was also disclosed in the case of unsymmetrical diaryliodonium salts. Specific phenylation of valuable fused-pyrimidinones including quinazolinone are provided. This strategy enables a rapid access to an array of various (hetero)arylated N-containing polyheteroaromatics as new potential bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Two one-pot procedures for the construction of carbon-bridged diaryliodonium triflates and tetrafluoroborates are described. Strong Brønsted acids enable the effective Friedel-Crafts alkylation with diversely substituted o-iodobenzyl alcohol derivatives, providing diphenylmethane scaffolds, which are subsequently oxidized and cyclized to the corresponding dibenzo[b,e]iodininium salts. Based on NMR investigations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we could verify the so-far-undescribed existence of two stable isomers in cyclic iodonium salts substituted with aliphatic side chains in the carbon bridge.

Diaryliodoniums Salts as Coupling Partners for Transition-Metal Catalyzed C- and N-Arylation of Heteroarenes. Catalysts 2020. Abstract
Owing to the pioneering works performed on the metal-catalyzed sp2 C–H arylation of indole and pyrrole by Sanford and Gaunt, N– and C-arylation involving diaryliodonium salts offers an attractive complementary strategy for the late-stage diversification of heteroarenes. The main feature of this expanding methodology is the selective incorporation of structural diversity into complex molecules which usually have several C–H bonds and/or N–H bonds with high tolerance to functional groups and under mild conditions. This review summarizes the main recent achievements reported in transition-metal-catalyzed N– and/or C–H arylation of heteroarenes using acyclic diaryliodonium salts as coupling partners.

Abstract
C-H activation has surfaced as an increasingly powerful tool for molecular sciences, with notable applications to material sciences, crop protection, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical industries, among others. Despite major advances, the vast majority of these C-H functionalizations required precious 4d or 5d transition metal catalysts. Given the cost-effective and sustainable nature of earth-abundant first row transition metals, the development of less toxic, inexpensive 3d metal catalysts for C-H activation has gained considerable recent momentum as a significantly more environmentally-benign and economically-attractive alternative. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview on first row transition metal catalysts for C-H activation until summer 2018.

Abstract
Copper-catalysed N-arylation of fused triazoles using diaryliodonium salts as an aryl source is described. This scalable protocol displayed good compatibility towards diverse sensitive functional groups like ester, alkyl and nitro groups and halogens (F, Cl, Br). The synthetic usefulness of the prepared triazolium salts was proved by preparing α-hydroxyketone through benzoin condensation. Photophysical studies of these compounds showed promising Stokes-shifted fluorescence emission in aqueous medium, so this molecular framework could be a proficient probe for biological applications.

Abstract
Regioselective construction of crucial C-N and C-O bonds leading to N-arylquinolones and aryloxyquinolines has been accomplished by employing easily accessible diaryliodonium salts and quinolones in water under metal- and ligand-free conditions. This operationally simple strategy is significant due to mild reaction conditions, high product yields, recyclability of released iodoarenes and scalability to the gram level. The practical utility of the developed protocol was proved by the arylation of medicinally important heterocycles like acridin-9(10H)-one, 3-methylquinoxalin-2(1H)-one and 1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2(3H)-one.
