A macrocyclic fluorescent probe for the detection of citrate

We present a macrocyclic fluorescent probe for the detection of citrate. This receptor binds citrate through hydrogen-bonding interactions in aqueous solutions, and exhibits a turn-on in fluorescence in response to binding. The presence of common biologically relevant dicarboxylate species does not significantly impact the fluorescence response. We have demonstrated the utility of this probe with the staining of murine splenocytes, and identified different basal levels of citrate present in immune cell subsets via flow cytometry analysis.

Robust synthesis of sugar-coumarin based fluorescent 1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles using highly efficient recyclable citrate grafted β-cyclodextrin@magnetite nano phase transfer catalyst in aqueous media

Green synthesis of 1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles via click reaction using nano magnetic Fe₃O₄ core decorated with cyclodextrin-citric acid (Fe₃O₄@CD-CIT) acting as a phase transfer nanoreactor with low copper loading under ultrasonication at 40 °C, in aqueous media is described. Anchoring the surface of magnetite with cyclodextrin (CD) prevents its agglomeration and at the same time, CD provides a hydrophobic niche for lipophilic reactants while its outer hydrophilic core makes the reaction feasible in water yielding almost quantitative yield of desired products. Magnetic separation using an external magnet, recyclability and reuse (7 times), without appreciably affecting the %yield of the products are its other attractive attributes. Gram scale synthesis was also achieved with 93% yield.

The structure of Cu(II) and Hg(II) complexes of bispyrenyl azine revisited

Azine ligands show preference for the antiperiplanar conformation, but their 2:2 ligand-metal complexes can exhibit a central N₄M₂ core in the most stable chair arrangement, as in the case of the model lithium complex, with the ligand displaying a synclinal conformation that is not stable in the free ligand. According to DFT calculations, complexation of Cu²⁺ with bis(1-pyrenyl)azine (1) affords a C₂-symmetric [1·Cu²⁺]₂ species with a planar central N₄Cu₂ core exhibiting a weak cuprophilic interaction. The pendant pyrenyl substituents are brought close and parallel to each other, therefore accounting for the π-stacking that is responsible for excimer fluorescence. In case of Hg²⁺, complexation by the same ligand affords a C₂-symmetric complex with an essentially linear N-Hg-C coordination environment at every metal center and without intermetallic interaction. T-Stacking interactions between pyrenyl groups explain the overall rigidity required for enhancement of fluorescence. A coumarin based Schiff base probe for selective fluorescence detection of Al3+ and its application in live cell imaging

A new coumarin based Schiff base compound, CSB-1 has been synthesized to detect metal ion based on the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). The cation binding properties of CSB-1 was thoroughly examined in UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. In fluorescence spectroscopy the compound showed high selectivity toward Al³⁺ ion and the Al³⁺ can be quantified in mixed aqueous buffer solution (MeOH: 0.01M HEPES Buffer; 9:1; v/v) at pH7.4 as well as in BSA media. The fluorescence intensity of CSB-1 was enhanced by ~24 fold after addition of only five equivalents of Al³⁺. The fluorescence titration of CSB-1 with Al³⁺ in mixed aqueous buffer afforded a binding constant, K_a=(1.06±0.2)×10⁴M^-1. The colour change from light yellow to colourless and the appearance of blue fluorescence, which can be observed by the naked eye, provides a real-time method for Al³⁺ sensing. Further the live cell imaging study indicated that the detection of intracellular Al³⁺ ions are also readily possible in living cell.

Theoretical and Experimental: The Synthetic and Anion-Binding Properties of Tripodal Salicylaldehyde Derivatives

A series of colorimetric anion probes 1–6 containing OH and NO₂ groups were synthesized, and their recognition properties toward various anions were investigated by visual observation, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, fluorescence, ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance titration spectra and theoretical investigation. Nanomaterials of three compounds 2–4 were prepared successfully. Four compounds 3–6 that contain electron-withdrawing substituents showed a high binding ability for AcO⁻. The host–guest complex formed through a 1:1 binding ratio, and color changes were detectable during the recognition process. Theoretical investigation analysis revealed that an intramolecular hydrogen bond existed in the structures of compounds and the roles of molecular frontier orbitals in molecular interplay. These studies suggested that this series of compounds could be used as colorimetric probes to detect of AcO⁻.

Substituent directed selectivity in anion recognition by a new class of simple osmium-pyrazole derived receptors

The present article deals with the structurally, spectroscopically and electrochemically characterised osmium-bipyridyl derived complexes [(bpy)2Os(II)(HL1)Cl]ClO4 [1]ClO4 and [(bpy)2Os(II)(HL2)Cl]ClO4 [2]ClO4 incorporating neutral and monodentate pyrazole derivatives (HL) with one free NH function (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, HL1 = pyrazole, HL2 = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole). The crystal structures of [1]ClO4 and [2]ClO4 reveal intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the free NH proton of HL and the equatorially placed Cl(-) ligand (N-HCl) with donor-acceptor distances of 3.114(7) Å and 3.153(6) Å as well as intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the NH proton and one of the oxygen atoms of ClO4(-) (N-HO) with donor-acceptor distances of 2.870(10) Å and 3.024(8) Å, respectively. The effect of hydrogen bonding interactions has translated into the less acidic nature of the NH proton of the coordinated HL with estimated pKa > 12. 1(+) and 2(+) exhibit reversible Os(II)/(III) and irreversible Os(III)/(IV) processes in CH3CN within ± 2.0 V versus SCE. The effect of 3,5-dimethyl substituted HL2 on 2(+) has been reflected in the appreciable lowering (40 mV) of the Os(II/III) potential, along with the further decrease in the acidity of the NH proton (pKa > 13.0) with regard to HL1 coordinated 1(+) (pKa: ∼ 12.3). The electronic spectral features of Os(ii) (1(+)/2(+)) and electrochemically generated Os(III) (1(2+)/2(2+)) derived complexes have been analysed by TD-DFT calculations. The efficacy of the 1(+) and 2(+) encompassing free NH proton towards the anion recognition process has been evaluated by different experimental investigations using a wide variety of anions. It however establishes that receptor 1(+) can recognise both F(-) and OAc(-) in acetonitrile solution, while 2(+) is exclusively selective for the F(-) ion.
