Selective Hydrolysis of Ovalbumin by Zr-Based Lacunary Polyoxotungstate in Surfactant Solutions

This study aims to design an artificial metalloprotease based on a Zr-containing polyoxometalate Na8[Zr(W5O18)2] [Zr(W5)2] for the hydrolysis of ovalbumin (OVA) in the presence of different surfactants, which can be used in many areas of the biological and medical sciences, particularly for targeted proteolytic drug design. For this reason, parameters, including the free energy of binding, the chemical nature of amino acid residues, secondary structures, and electrostatic potentials, of Zr(W5)2-OVA and Zr(W5)2-OVA-surfactant were analyzed by molecular docking simulations. The investigations showed that the presence of surfactants decreases the binding affinity of Zr(W5)2 for OVA amino acids, and hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions are formed between Zr(W5)2 and OVA amino acids. Additionally, GROMACS further illustrated the significance of SDS and CTAB surfactants in influencing the conformational changes of the OVA that lead to selective protein hydrolysis. In agreement with molecular dynamics simulation results, the experimental analysis showed more protein hydrolysis for the Zr(W5)2-OVA-surfactant systems. For instance, circular dichroism spectroscopy indicated that Zr(W5)2-OVA-CTAB and Zr(W5)2-OVA-TX-100 were more hydrolytically efficient due to the increased level of β-structures rather than α-chains, which showed that surfactants can facilitate the accessibility of Zr(W5)2 to the cleavage sites by inducing partial unfolding of the OVA structure.

Luminescent solvent-free liquids based on Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes with polyethylene glycol chains

A series of Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes with polyethylene glycol chains were synthesized and their photophysical properties were examined. These complexes maintained the solvent-free liquid state even at room temperature and their glass transition temperatures (Tg) were determined to be around -40 °C. The complexes showed blue to yellow luminescence under UV irradiation in the solvent-free liquid state with good emission quantum yields (Φ) of up to 0.26. The luminescence colour could also be tuned by dissolving organic dyes in the blue luminescent liquid sample. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations were performed to further understand the photophysical properties.

Recyclable thermosets based on modified epoxy-amine network polymers

The development of high performance, recyclable thermoset materials for applications in plastics, composites, coatings and adhesives requires a synthetic approach where recyclability is designed into the molecular structure of the material. This paper describes a single stage process for the creation of materials from simple, low-cost molecular building blocks, where the polymerisation of liquid epoxy resins and aliphatic amines in the presence of an n-butyl diboronic ester, delivers epoxy-amine-dioxazaborocane materials with tunable physical properties including glass transition temperature (T_g). Mechanical (thermal) recycling and reprocessing of the epoxy-amine-dioxazaborocane thermoset is demonstrated, with retention of Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength. Most notably, an efficient and low-cost process for the chemical recycling, disassembly and dissolution of the thermoset is demonstrated via two complementary processes using either pinacol (diol) or mono-functional phenylboronic ester.

Multi-colour circularly polarized luminescence properties of chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes

A series of chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes was synthesized and their photophysical properties were examined. These complexes showed multi-colour (blue, yellow and red) photoluminescence in solution and in the solid state with good emission quantum yield (Φ) depending on the π-systems of the ligands. The chiral complexes exhibited circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with an absolute luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) of up to the 1.3 × 10^-3 in solution and 1.9 × 10^-2 in the drop-cast film state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations were conducted to further understand the photophysical properties.

Recent advances in the synthesis of luminescent tetra-coordinated boron compounds

Tetra-coordinated boron compounds offer a plethora of luminescent materials. Different chelation around the boron center (O,O-, N,C-, N,O-, and N,N-) has been explored to tune the electronic and photophysical properties of tetra-coordinated boron compounds. A number of fascinating molecules with interesting properties such as aggregation induced emission, mechanochromism and tunable emission by changing the solvent polarity were realised. Owing to their rich and unique properties, some of the molecules have shown applications in making optoelectronic devices, probes and so on. This perspective provides an overview of the recent developments of tetra-coordinated boron compounds and their potential applications.

Boranils: Versatile Multifunctional Organic Fluorophores for Innovative Applications

Multifunctional stimuli-responsive fluorophores showing bright environment-sensitive emissions have fueled intense research due to their innovative applications in the fields of biotechnologies, optoelectronics, and materials. A strong structural diversity is observed among molecular materials, which has been enriched over the years with a growing responsiveness to stimuli. Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes have long been the flagship of emissive boron complexes due to their outstanding properties until a decade ago when analogues based on N^O, N^N, or N^C π-conjugated chelates emerged. The finality of developing borate dyes was to compensate for BODIPYs’ lack of solid-state fluorescence and small Stokes shifts while keeping their excellent optical properties in solution. Among them, the borate complexes based on a salicylaldimine ligand, called by the acronym boranils appear as the most promising, owing to their facile synthesis and dual-state emission properties. Boranil dyes have proven to be good alternatives to BODIPY dyes and have been applied in applications such as bioimaging, bioconjugation, and detection of biosubstrates. Meanwhile, ab initio calculations have rationalized experimental results and provided insightful feedback for future designs. This review article aims at providing a concise yet representative overview of the chemistry around the boranil core with the subsequent applications.

Photophysical properties of a boron analogue of coumarin

In this report, we present a study into the structure and electronic properties of difluoroboronsalicylaldoxime (DFBS), a boron-based structural analog of coumarin. The modification of the heterocyclic ring of coumarin with boron results in a compound with similar structural parameters and molecular orbitals to coumarin. DFT and TDDFT calculations reveal a significant stabilization of the LUMO in DFBS; this is supported by a ∼40 nm red shift of the lowest electronic transition in the absorption spectrum. Interestingly, DFBS is emissive, while unmodified coumarin is effectively non-radiative. Comparisons between DFBS, emissive coumarin variants, and unmodified coumarin suggest that the charge transfer character of the transition contributes to the fluorescence.

Discovery of Functional Luminescence Properties Based on Flexible and Bendable Boron-Fused Azomethine/Azobenzene Complexes with O,N,O-Type Tridentate Ligands

Azomethine (C=N) and azo (N=N) scaffolds are a part of structural units in poly(p-phenylene azomethine) (PAM) and poly(p-phenylene azo) (PAZ), respectively. Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) is known to be one of luminescent π-conjugated polymers, meanwhile PAM and PAZ, which are the aza-substituted PPV analogues, are regarded as weak or no emissive materials. However, by the boron complexation, intense emission can be induced. Furthermore, environment-sensitivity and stimuli-responsivity were also observed. In this review, we demonstrate unique and versatile luminescent properties based on "flexible and bendable" π-conjugated systems composed of the boron-fused azomethine and azobenzene complexes (BAm and BAz) with the O,N,O-type tridentate ligands. The "flexible and bendable" luminophores showed intriguing optical behaviors, such as thermosalient effect, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and crystallized-induced emission (CIE). Moreover, highly efficient emissions both in solution and film states were observed from the polymers. We illustrate the results and mechanisms on these luminescent properties from the series of our recent studies with BAm and BAz complexes and polymers.

Origin of Fluorescence from Boranils in the Crystalline Phase

A small series of boranil complexes has been studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. Weakly fluorescent in most organic solvents at room temperature, the target compounds display bright emission in the crystalline phase. X-ray diffraction patterns obtained for single crystals indicate a distorted tetrahedral geometry around the O-B-N center with the boron atom being displaced from the plane of the heterobicyclic ring. Consideration of the various bond lengths in comparison with those of reference compounds indicates that the ancillary phenyl ring, bearing different para-substituents, does not make a prominent contribution to the molecular dipole moment in the solid state. Absorption and fluorescence spectra recorded for the crystals remain remarkably similar to those for liquid solutions and display large Stokes shifts. Proximity broadening is observed in one case. The nitrophenyl derivative exhibits additional absorption and emission bands unique to the solid state and could be indicative of an intermolecular charge-transfer transition. The optical properties are discussed in terms of the crystal packing diagrams.

Synthesis and Tunable Optical Properties of C,N-Chelated Borate Luminophores Derived from Potassium Acyltrifluoroborates

A new class of borate luminophores has been synthesized by a simple two-step reaction using potassium acyltrifluoroborates (KATs) as starting materials. The hydrazones obtained from reactions between KATs and 2-hydrazinopyridines followed by a cyclization resulted in the unprecedented formation of C,N-chelated six-membered bora-heterocycles. Under consideration of the results of DFT and TD-DFT calculations, four luminophores based on such bora-heterocycles are designed and synthesized, which exhibit a tunable fluorescence range from blue to red in the solid state. Moreover, one of the luminophores exhibits mechanofluorochromism from blue to yellow/green. As a result of the aforementioned mechanochromism of one of these luminophores, white-color emission was achieved by simply mixing the four luminophores.

A highly efficient antioxidant based on boron and a Schiff base bridged phenolic diphenylamine: synthesis, crystal structure and thermal and antioxidant properties

Antioxidants can effectively protect vegetable-oil-based lubricants against oxidative degradation and prolong their service life. A novel compound, (E)-4-({3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-[(diphenylboranyl)oxy]benzylidene}amino)-N-phenylaniline (BSPD) or {2-[(4-anilinophenyl)iminomethyl-κN]-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolato-κO}diphenylboron, C₃₉H₄₁BN₂O, was synthesized by a one-pot reaction of the Schiff base bridged phenolic diphenylamine 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-{N-[4-(phenylamino)phenyl]carboximidoyl}phenol (SPD) with phenylboronic acid. The corresponding single-crystal X-ray study revealed that the B atom in BSPD has a typical tetrahedral geometry, and the N,O-chelated six-membered ring adopts a chair conformation. According to thermogravimetric analysis, the 5% weight-loss temperature of BSPD increases to 328 °C and the 95% weight-loss temperature is up to 414 °C. More importantly, the antioxidant capability of BSPD in vegetable oil is much better than that of commercial antioxidants [diphenylamine (DPA) and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT)] and unmodified SPD.

The effect of locking π-conjugation in organoboron moieties in the structures of luminescent tetracoordinate boron complexes

A series of 8 luminescent borafluorene complexes were extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically in order to elucidate the effect of organoboron moiety rigidification on the physicochemical properties of these compounds. Due to the spiro geometry of the boron atom, borafluorene and ligand units are perpendicularly aligned, which considerably affects the flexibility of the molecule as well as its solid-state structure. Through comparative analysis with close diphenyl analogues, we show how these structural features influence the thermal, photoluminescent and charge mobility behaviour of the studied compounds. Crystal structural analysis revealed that the molecules are connected mostly through C-HO and C-Hπ interactions formed between perpendicularly aligned borafluorene and ligand moieties from neighboured molecules, serving as a complementary donor and acceptor of electron density, respectively. This also efficiently prevents molecules from engaging in unfavoured π-stacking contact. Furthermore, structural analysis suggests that borafluorene complexes possess a considerable degree of flexibility due to OBN heterocycle distortions and mutual borafluorene-ligand plane movements. The magnitude of these effects strictly depends on the ligand structure and may lead either to enhancing or lowering the quantum yield value with respect to BPh₂ analogues, while the absorption and emission wavelength are slightly affected. The measured photophysical parameters for solid-state samples showed that the studied complexes are much better emitters in their crystalline states that in amorphous films. The TD-DFT and NTO calculations revealed a significant change in frontier molecular distribution, with the HOMO localized on the borafluorene moiety. However, as the HOMO-LUMO transition is geometrically not favoured, excitation occurred from HOMO-1 localized on the ligand. Finally, aggregation effects were discussed based on supramolecular arrangements in crystal structures and charge transfer rates obtained from theoretical calculations in the framework of the Marcus-Hush approximation. They suggest that borafluorene complexes are much better electron carriers with respect to non-annulated BPh₂ complexes.

The effect of conformational isomerism on the optical properties of bis(8-oxyquinolato) diboron complexes with a 2,2'-biphenyl backbone

A fluorescent bis(8-oxyquinolato) diborinic complex with a central 2,2'-biphenyl backbone 1 and its octafluoro analogue 2 were synthesized to study the optical-structural relationship of sterically encumbered molecules featuring close intramolecular π-stacking interactions involving chromophore units. The crystal structure of 1 revealed a unique π-stacked arrangement of two pendant phenyl groups and two 8-oxyquinolato ligands (Q) located in the inner part of the complex. Unlike 1, the closely related complex 2 features conformational isomerism, and two major forms, namely 2-syn and 2-anti, are observed in solution to a varying extent depending on the solvent polarity. Form 2-syn, a geometrical analogue of 1, is preferable in polar solutions, whereas its rotational isomer 2-anti featuring π-stacking interactions between the terminal phenyl group and Q ligand dominates in benzene and chloromethane solutions. The observed conformational equilibria strongly affect the optical properties of the system, specifically leading to a significant increase of the quantum yield of emission (from 22% in MeCN to 38% in benzene) accompanied by a bathochromic shift (Δλ = 10 nm) of absorption and hypsochromic shifts (Δλ = -8 nm) of emission spectra with decreasing solvent polarity. This effect was ascribed to the variation in frontier orbital distributions.

Reunderstanding the Fluorescent Behavior of Four-Coordinate Monoboron Complexes Containing Monoanionic Bidentate Ligands

We demonstrated for the first time that, at temperatures below the melting point of a given polar solvent, the emission of some four-coordinate monoboron complexes containing monoanionic bidentate (NO) ligands shifted to lower wavelengths, but no such shift was observed for studies conducted in nonpolar solvents. This means that the emission from a polar solvent appears at shorter wavelengths if compared with that from a nonpolar solvent when the measurement was performed at low temperatures, a phenomenon totally different from that observed for conventional solvatochromic fluorophores. The finding was rationalized by considering the temperature-dependent conformational relaxation of the tetrahedron monoboron complexes from their local excited (LE) state to their relaxed excited (RE) state. Further studies revealed that variating the structure of the chelating ligands could result in remarkable changes in the fluorescent colors of the monoboron complexes. However, changing the structure of other two monodentate ligands showed little effect upon the fluorescence property of the compounds. Therefore, it is anticipated that the monoboron complexes may be taken as a platform to construct a variety of functional molecular systems via alternating the structure of the chelating ligand and that of the monodentate ligand. As an example, naphthalene was introduced as a monodentate ligand, and independent emissions from naphthalene unit and the other part of the monoboron complex as well as intramolecular energy transfer between them were observed. It is believed that the present work provides a new insight into the monoboron complexes, laying the foundation for them to be explored for developing novel molecular systems.

A stress tensor and QTAIM perspective on the substituent effects of biphenyl subjected to torsion

The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) defines quantities in 3D space that can be easily obtained from routine quantum chemical calculations. The present investigation shows that local properties can be related quantitatively to measures traditionally connected to experimental data, such as Hammett constants. We consider the specific case of substituted biphenyl to quantify the effects of a torsion φ, 0.0° ≤ φ ≤ 180.0°, of the C-C bond linking the two phenyl rings for C12 H9 -x, where x = N(CH3 )2 , NH2 , CH3 , CHO, CN, NO2, on the entire molecule. QTAIM interpreted Hammett constants, aΔH(rb ) are introduced and constructed using the difference between the H(rb ) value of C12 H9 -x and the C12 H9 -H, biphenyl which is the reference molecule, with a constant of proportionality a. This investigation unexpectedly yields very good or good agreement for the x groups with the Hammett para-, meta-, and ortho-substituent constants and is checked against para-substituted benzene. We then proceed to present the interpreted substituent constants of seven new biphenyl substituent groups, where tabulated Hammett substituent constant values are not available; y = SiH3 , ZnCl, COOCH3 , SO2 NH2 , SO2 OH, COCl, CB3 . Consistency is found for the QTAIM interpreted biphenyl substituent constants of the seven new groups y independently using the stress tensor polarizability Pσ . In addition, a selection of future applications is discussed that highlight the usefulness of this approach. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Solution and solid-state fluorescence of 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)-1,5-benzodiazepin-2-one (HBD) borate complexes
