Pyrene-Based "Turn-On" Fluorescent Polymeric Probe with Thioacetal Units in the Main Chain for Mercury(II) Detection in Aqueous Solutions and Living Cells

A water-soluble polymeric pyrene-based polythioacetal (PTA-Py) with thioacetal units in the main chain is simply synthesized by direct polycondensation of 3, 6-dioxa-1, 8-octanedithiol, 1-pyrene formaldehyde, and mPEG2k-SH. The probe PTA-Py shows a good fluorescence response to Hg2+ ions due to the Hg2+-promoted deprotection reaction of thioacetal groups to regenerate the original 1-pyrene formaldehyde compound. After adding Hg2+ to the PTA-Py solution, the fluorescence intensity (FI) gradually increases with increasing concentrations of Hg2+. Compared with other metal ions, the probe exhibits high sensitivity, good selectivity, and rapid response to Hg2+. The low detection limits are 12.3 nm in ethanol-PBS buffer and 13.3 nm in water, respectively. The results imply that the simply synthesized water-soluble polymeric probe had potential applications in the rapid detection of Hg2+ ions in aqueous solutions. Moreover, the polymeric PTA-Py shows high sensitivity for CH3Hg+ with detection limits of 26.5 nm in ethanol/PBS buffer. In addition, PTA-Py can efficiently detect Hg2+ ions in HeLa cells. The results demonstrate that a valuable method is developed for biocompatible polymeric sensors for Hg2+ ions in biological and environmental samples.

Colorimetric detection of Hg2+ with an azulene-containing chemodosimeter via dithioacetal hydrolysis

Azulene is a bicyclic aromatic chromophore that absorbs in the visible region. Its absorption maximum undergoes a hypsochromic shift if a conjugated electron-withdrawing group is introduced at the C1 position. This fact can be exploited in the design of a colorimetric chemodosimeter that functions by the transformation of a dithioacetal to the corresponding aldehyde upon exposure to Hg2+ ions. This chemodosimeter exhibits good chemoselectivity over other metal cations, and responds with an unambiguous colour change clearly visible to the naked eye. Its synthesis is concise and its ease of use makes it appropriate in resource-constrained environments, for example in determing mercury content of drinking water sources in the developing world.

A novel coumarin-derived dithioacetal chemosensor for trace detection of Hg2+ in real water samples

A novel coumarin-derived dithioacetal chemosensor, 8-(1,3-dithian-2-yl)-7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (LS), has been designed and synthesized. The sensor LS showed highly selective fluorescent sensing for Hg2+ with a low detection limit of 0.81 nM in the pH range from 6.15 to 9.96 in ethanol/water (1:1, v/v) solution. The sensing mechanism of LS toward Hg2+ was proposed and verified by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies. Under an ultraviolet lamp, the fluorescence color changes could be easily detected by the naked eye. In addition, the sensor LS has been applied in the trace detection of Hg2+ in real water samples.

Long-Wavelength Fluorescent Chemosensors for Hg2+ based on Pyrene

A novel long-wavelength turn-on fluorescent chemosensor CS based on pyrene was synthesized to detect Hg²⁺. In the presence of other metal ions, CS could effectively recognize Hg²⁺ and produce the turn-on fluorescent emission at 607 nm. Also, the absorption spectrum exhibited red-shift. Meanwhile, the change of the solution color from yellow to orange was directly observed by the naked eye. The interaction between CS and Hg²⁺ was confirmed by the Job's plot, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and density functional theory calculations. It was found that the fluorescence of CS could be reversible when I^- was added into the solution of CS and Hg²⁺. CS illustrated high selectivity and good sensitivity for Hg²⁺ with the limit of detection of 36 nm. Moreover, CS could be utilized as test strips and silica gel plates to identify Hg²⁺.

A novel bifunctional fluorescent and colorimetric probe for detection of mercury and fluoride ions

A fluorescent and colorimetric probe L1 based on a simple coumarin derivative for detection of Hg²⁺ and F^- ions was developed. Upon addition of Hg²⁺ and F^- ions, L1 underwent desulfurization and desilylation, respectively, to induce marked increase in the fluorescence intensity and sharp color change from light yellow to dark purple and light brown, respectively. Probe L1 could be used for sensing and for quantitative measurement of Hg²⁺ and F^- ions by both UV-vis and fluorescence spectra. The bifunctional probe exhibited a high selectivity over other competitive cations and anions and could be used in both organic and aqueous media over a wide pH range.

An ultra-sensitive and ratiometric fluorescent probe based on the DTBET process for Hg2+ detection and imaging applications

In this article, we present an ultra-sensitive and ratiometric fluorescent probe (TR-Hg) for Hg²⁺ detection based on the mechanism of aggregation induced emission (AIE) and dark through-bond energy transfer (DTBET). The probe was constructed using tetraphenylethene as the dark donor and rhodamine B thiolactone as the acceptor. By exploiting the advantages of DTBET, which eliminates emission leakage from dark donors and provides nearly 100% energy transfer efficiency, TR-Hg exhibits more than a 30 000-fold fluorescence ratio enhancement after reacting with Hg²⁺. TR-Hg demostrates (i) a detection limit of 43 pM, which is the lowest among the reported ratiometric Hg²⁺ probes, (ii) excellent selectivity, fast response-time (<10 s) and a wide pH application range, (iii) strong applicability for paper-based colorimetric assay, where readout can be performed by the naked eye, and (iv) fluorescent imaging of Hg²⁺ in onion epidermal tissues, indicating its potential use in living organisms.

Anthracene-Based Highly Selective and Sensitive Fluorescent "Turn-on" Chemodosimeter for Hg2

Three π-extended anthracene-bearing thioacetals (1-3) have been synthesized, and their fluorescence "turn-on" responses to Hg2+ ions are studied. The chemodosimetric fluorescence-sensing behavior and their resulting hydrolysis via a desulfurization reaction mechanism leads to the formation of highly fluorescent respective aldehyde substitutions. Furthermore, this mechanism was supported by increase in the quantum yields of their resulting aldehydes and is correlated to their molecular substitution. The chemosensors 1-3 have exhibited to be promising receptors toward Hg2+ ions in the presence of other competitive metal ions. Moreover, the detection limits of 1-3 have been found to be in the nanomolar range (94, 59, and 235, respectively). Fluorescence microscopic imaging studies show that 1-2 have been found to be effective for fluorescence imaging in live cells. Moreover, compounds 1-3 act as potential candidates for the detection of Hg2+ in environmental and biological systems as well as real samples.

A dual spectroscopic fluorescence probe based on carbon dots for detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol/Fe (III) ion by fluorescence and frequency doubling scattering spectra and its analytical applications

A convenient, highly sensitive and reliable assay for 2,4,6‑trinitrophenol (TNP) and Fe (III) ion (Fe³⁺) in the dual spectroscopic manner is developed based on novel carbon dots (CDs). The CDs with highly blue emitting fluorescent were easily prepared via the one-step potassium hydroxide-assisted reflux method from dextrin. The as-synthesized CDs exhibited the high crystalline quality, the excellent fluorescence characteristics with a high quantum yield of ~13.1%, and the narrow size distribution with an average diameter of 6.3±0.5nm. Fluorescence and frequency doubling scattering (FDS) spectra of CDs show the unique changes in the presence of TNP/Fe³⁺ by different mechanism. The fluorescence of CDs decreased apparently in the presence of TNP via electron-transfer. Thus, after the experimental conditions were optimized, the linear range for detection TNP is 0-50μM, the detection limit was 19.1nM. With the addition of Fe³⁺, the FDS of CDs appeared to be highly sensitive with a quick response to Fe³⁺ as a result of the change concentration of the scattering particle. The emission peak for FDS at 450nm was enhanced under the excitation wavelength at 900nm. The fluorescence response changes linearly with Fe³⁺ concentration in the range of 8-40μM, the detection limits were determined to be 44.1nM. The applications of CDs were extended for the detection of TNP, Fe³⁺ in real water samples with a high recovery. The results reported here may become the potential tools for the fast response of TNP and Fe³⁺ in the analysis of environmental pollutants.

Small molecular probe as selective tritopic sensor of Al3+, F- and TNP: Fabrication of portable prototype for onsite detection of explosive TNP

Schiff base organic compound (SOC) has been prepared as a tritopic chemosensor for selective sensing by fluorescence signalling towards ions like Al³⁺, F^- and explosive molecule like TNP. In general, fluorescence like photophysical property has been used for selective detection of analyte where Al³⁺ and F^- show turn-on fluorescence signal at different wavelengths (nm) however, quenching was found with TNP. As a consequence, the chemosensor has become a selective sensor for Al³⁺, F^- and TNP. Reversibility of fluorescence responses for Al³⁺ and F^- are observed in presence of ammonium nitrate and H⁺ respectively. Similar to the detection of TNP, the detection of explosive like NO₃^- salts is also essential from homeland security point of view. In the present work, the finding of reversible sequential fluorescence response can be promoted for fabrication of next generation AND-NOT-OR-NAND-XOR-XNOR-NOR based complex logic circuit which is applicable in photonics, security and other fields including inorganic and material science. In the case of TNP recognition, the pathway mainly depends on non-covalent interaction (quenching constant: 4.4 × 10⁵ M^-1) which is even better than the recently reported materials. Detection limit for Al³⁺, F^- and TNP is 1 μM, 3 μM and 500 nM respectively. DFT-D3 has been carried out to explore the host⋯guest interaction along with the structure-property correlation of the present host-guest system. All three guest analytes have been detected inside the living cell at a certain level and in its consequence, the successful in vitro recognition ability of the SOCs inside human cell line HeLa has been explored too. In real time stepping, an easy to operate and an economically affordable pocket prototype has also been fabricated for on spot detection of TNP like explosive.

Chirality Relay in 2,2'-Substituted 1,1'-Binaphthyl: Access to Propeller Chirality of the Tricoordinate Boron Center

It is a challenging issue to achieve propeller chirality for triarylboranes owing to the low transition barrier between the P and M forms of the boron center. Herein, we report a new strategy to achieve propeller chirality of triarylboranes. It was found that the chirality relay from axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl to propeller chirality of the trivalent boron center can be realized when a Me₂ N and a Mes₂ B group (Mes=mesityl) are introduced at the 2,2'-positions of the 1,1'-binaphthyl skeleton (BN-BNaph) owing to the strong π-π interaction between the Me₂ N-bonded naphthyl ring and the phenyl ring of one adjacent Mes group, which not only exerts great steric hindrance on the rotation of the two Mes groups but also gives unequal stability to the two configurations of the boron center for a given configuration of the binaphthyl moiety. The stereostructures of the boron center were fully characterized through ¹ H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystal analyses, and theoretical calculations. Detailed comparisons with the analog BN-Ph-BNaph, in which the Mes₂ B group is separated from 1,1'-binaphthyl by a para-phenylene spacer, confirmed the essential role of π-π interaction for the successful chirality relay in BN-BNaph.

Single excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) chemodosimeter based on rhodol for both Hg2+ and OCl−: ratiometric detection with live-cell imaging

We have synthesised a ratiometric fluorescence chemodosimeter, STBR, for the detection of Hg²⁺ and OCl⁻ in one platform over other cations, anions and oxidants in aqueous solution.
