Comprehensive review on pH and temperature-responsive polymeric adsorbents: Mechanisms, equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics of adsorption processes for heavy metals and organic dyes

Wastewater treatment technologies have been developed to address the health and environmental risks associated with toxic and cancer-causing dyes and heavy metals found in industrial waste. The most commonly used method to mitigate and treat such effluents is adsorption, which is favored for its high efficiency, low costs, and ease of operation. However, traditional adsorbents have limitations in terms of regeneration and selectivity compared to smart adsorbents. Smart polymeric adsorbents, on the other hand, can undergo physical and chemical changes in response to external factors like temperature and pH, enabling a selective adsorption process. These adsorbents can be easily regenerated and reused with minimal generation of secondary pollutants during desorption. The unique properties acquired by stimuli-responsive adsorbents have encouraged researchers to investigate their potential for the selective and efficient removal of organic dyes and heavy metals. This comprehensive review focuses on two common stimuli, pH and temperature, discussing the fabrication methods and characteristics of smart adsorbents responsive to these factors. It also provides an overview of the mechanisms, isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics of the adsorption process for each type of stimuli-responsive adsorbent. Finally, the review concludes with discussions on future perspectives and considerations.

Polymerization of Polar Monomers Mediated by Main-Group Lewis Acid-Base Pairs

The development of new or more sustainable, active, efficient, controlled, and selective polymerization reactions or processes continues to be crucial for the synthesis of important polymers or materials with specific structures or functions. In this context, the newly emerged polymerization technique enabled by main-group Lewis pairs (LPs), termed as Lewis pair polymerization (LPP), exploits the synergy and cooperativity between the Lewis acid (LA) and Lewis base (LB) sites of LPs, which can be employed as frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), interacting LPs (ILPs), or classical Lewis adducts (CLAs), to effect cooperative monomer activation as well as chain initiation, propagation, termination, and transfer events. Through balancing the Lewis acidity, Lewis basicity, and steric effects of LPs, LPP has shown several unique advantages or intriguing opportunities compared to other polymerization techniques and demonstrated its broad polar monomer scope, high activity, control or livingness, and complete chemo- or regioselectivity, as well as its unique application in materials chemistry. These advances made in LPP are comprehensively reviewed, with the scope of monomers focusing on heteroatom-containing polar monomers, while the polymerizations mediated by main-group LAs and LBs separately that are most relevant to the LPP are also highlighted or updated. Examples of applying the principles of the LPP and LP chemistry as a new platform for advancing materials chemistry are highlighted, and currently unmet challenges in the field of the LPP, and thus the suggested corresponding future research directions, are also presented.

Effect of chain architecture on the swelling and thermal response of star-shaped thermo-responsive (poly(methoxy diethylene glycol acrylate)-block-polystyrene)3 block copolymer films

The effect of chain architecture on the swelling and thermal response of thin films obtained from an amphiphilic three-arm star-shaped thermo-responsive block copolymer poly(methoxy diethylene glycol acrylate)-block-polystyrene ((PMDEGA-b-PS)₃) is investigated by in situ neutron reflectivity (NR) measurements. The PMDEGA and PS blocks are micro-phase separated with randomly distributed PS nanodomains. The (PMDEGA-b-PS)₃ films show a transition temperature (TT) at 33 °C in white light interferometry. The swelling capability of the (PMDEGA-b-PS)₃ films in a D₂O vapor atmosphere is better than that of films from linear PS-b-PMDEGA-b-PS triblock copolymers, which can be attributed to the hydrophilic end groups and limited size of the PS blocks in (PMDEGA-b-PS)₃. However, the swelling kinetics of the as-prepared (PMDEGA-b-PS)₃ films and the response of the swollen film to a temperature change above the TT are significantly slower than that in the PS-b-PMDEGA-b-PS films, which may be related to the conformation restriction by the star-shape. Unlike in the PS-b-PMDEGA-b-PS films, the amount of residual D₂O in the collapsed (PMDEGA-b-PS)₃ films depends on the final temperature. It decreases from (9.7 ± 0.3)% to (7.0 ± 0.3)% or (6.0 ± 0.3)% when the final temperatures are set to 35 °C, 45 °C and 50 °C, respectively. This temperature-dependent reduction of embedded D₂O originates from the hindrance of chain conformation from the star-shaped chain architecture.

Silyl Ketene Acetals/B(C₆F₅)₃ Lewis Pair-Catalyzed Living Group Transfer Polymerization of Renewable Cyclic Acrylic Monomers

This work reveals the silyl ketene acetal (SKA)/B(C₆F₅)₃ Lewis pair-catalyzed room-temperature group transfer polymerization (GTP) of polar acrylic monomers, including methyl linear methacrylate (MMA), and the biorenewable cyclic monomers γ-methyl-α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone (MMBL) and α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone (MBL) as well. The in situ NMR monitored reaction of SKA with B(C₆F₅)₃ indicated the formation of Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs), although it is sluggish for MMA polymerization, such a FLP system exhibits highly activity and living GTP of MMBL and MBL. Detailed investigations, including the characterization of key reaction intermediates, polymerization kinetics and polymer structures have led to a polymerization mechanism, in which the polymerization is initiated with an intermolecular Michael addition of the ester enolate group of SKA to the vinyl group of B(C₆F₅)₃-activated monomer, while the silyl group is transferred to the carbonyl group of the B(C₆F₅)₃-activated monomer to generate the single-monomer-addition species or the active propagating species; the coordinated B(C₆F₅)₃ is released to the incoming monomer, followed by repeated intermolecular Michael additions in the subsequent propagation cycle. Such neutral SKA analogues are the real active species for the polymerization and are retained in the whole process as confirmed by experimental data and the chain-end analysis by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF MS). Moreover, using this method, we have successfully synthesized well-defined PMMBL-b-PMBL, PMMBL-b-PMBL-b-PMMBL and random copolymers with the predicated molecular weights (Mn) and narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD).

Synthesis of multi-arm star thermo-responsive polymers and topology effects on phase transition

Linear and star thermo-responsive polymers of poly(N-acryloylsarcosine methyl ester) [(PNASME)_n] and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [(PNIPAM)_n] with arm number n = 1, 2, 3 and 4 were synthesized following a core-first method via solution RAFT polymerization employing a series of mono- and multi-functional chain transfer agents.

A facile route towards PDMAEMA homopolymer amphiphiles

Well-defined poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) has been modified at low degrees of quaternization of the tertiary amine groups using alkyl halides with long alkyl chains as the quaternization agents. The resulting PDMAEMA-co-PQDMAEMA copolymers were studied in aqueous solution using potentiometric titrations, turbidimetry, surface tensiometry, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. An increase of the hydrophilicity of the precursor polymer, leading to an increase or even elimination of the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) for the quaternized copolymers was found; this extended the temperature range of the stable polymer solution. At the same time, it was shown that the hydrophobic character of the polymer increases upon quaternization, leading to higher surface activity compared to the precursor PDMAEMA homopolymer, and, thus, to more effective polymeric surfactants. This contradiction in the copolymer behavior was attributed to the interplay between the polymer self-assembly in the aqueous medium and the polymer adsorption at the air/water interface, which dominate the cloud point and the surface properties, respectively.

A Review of Thermo- and Ultrasound-Responsive Polymeric Systems for Delivery of Chemotherapeutic Agents

There has been an exponential increase in research into the development of thermal- and ultrasound-activated delivery systems for cancer therapy. The majority of researchers employ polymer technology that responds to environmental stimuli some of which are physiologically induced such as temperature, pH, as well as electrical impulses, which are considered as internal stimuli. External stimuli include ultrasound, light, laser, and magnetic induction. Biodegradable polymers may possess thermoresponsive and/or ultrasound-responsive properties that can complement cancer therapy through sonoporation and hyperthermia by means of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). Thermoresponsive and other stimuli-responsive polymers employed in drug delivery systems can be activated via ultrasound stimulation. Polyethylene oxide/polypropylene oxide co-block or triblock polymers and polymethacrylates are thermal- and pH-responsive polymer groups, respectively but both have proven to have successful activity and contribution in chemotherapy when exposed to ultrasound stimulation. This review focused on collating thermal- and ultrasound-responsive delivery systems, and combined thermo-ultrasonic responsive systems; and elaborating on the advantages, as well as shortcomings, of these systems in cancer chemotherapy. The mechanisms of these systems are explicated through their physical alteration when exposed to the corresponding stimuli. The properties they possess and the modifications that enhance the mechanism of chemotherapeutic drug delivery from systems are discussed, and the concept of pseudo-ultrasound responsive systems is introduced.

Organocatalyzed Group Transfer Polymerization

In contrast to the conventional group transfer polymerization (GTP) using a catalyst of either an anionic nucleophile or a transition-metal compound, the organocatalyzed GTP has to a great extent improved the living characteristics of the polymerization from the viewpoints of synthesizing structurally well-defined acrylic polymers and constructing defect-free polymer architectures. In this article, we describe the organocatalyzed GTP from a relatively personal perspective to provide our colleagues with a perspicuous and systematic overview on its recent progress as well as a reply to the curiosity of how excellently the organocatalysts have performed in this field. The stated perspectives of this review mainly cover five aspects, in terms of the assessment of the livingness of the polymerization, limit and scope of applicable monomers, mechanistic studies, control of the polymer structure, and a new GTP methodology involving the use of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane and hydrosilane.
