Facile Fabrication of Upconversion Photoluminescent Transparent Semiaromatic Polyamide Nanocomposites Through Interfacial Chemistry Modification

Transparent upconversion photoluminescent polyamide nanocomposites were fabricated via a facile in situ polycondensation method with interfacial chemistry modification employing polyacrylic acid-functionalized upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP-PAA) as fillers and transparent semiaromatic polyamides (SAPA) as host materials. The as-prepared UCNP-PAA could be dispersed uniformly in the polyamide salt solution and the SAPA chains can be grafted to the UCNP-PAA through condensation reactions. The grafted SAPA ligand on the surface of UCNP increases the compatibility between SAPA and UCNP, thus causing uniform dispersion of the UCNP in the polyamide nanocomposites and improving the transmittance of the polyamide nanocomposites. The obtained polyamide nanocomposites are transparent and show strong green upconversion photoluminescence. This work solved the problem of the dispersity of incorporated nanoparticles and improving the transparency of nanocomposites and, more importantly, endowed the traditional engineering plastic with upconversion photoluminescent properties which can be applied in three-dimensional displays and the related solar cell field in the future.

Cellulose Acetate Fabrics Loaded with Rhodamine B Hydrazide for Optical Detection of Cu(II)

In this work, different materials were fabricated from cellulose acetate, loaded with rhodamine B hydrazide and tested as Cu(II) optical sensor. We prepared membranes displaying a sub-micron porous structure using the phase inversion technique, clusters of fibers with varying diameter depending on the preparation procedure using electrospinning, and casted films presenting a smooth non porous structure. Loading of rhodamine B hydrazide on the fabrics after their production was found to be the best procedure to ensure the stability of the dye in the polymeric materials. Absorption and emission analysis of the solid substrates revealed the presence of the dye on the porous fabrics and allowed to choose the most suited materials and loading conditions to test their response towards Cu(II) ions. Reaction of the loaded rhodamine B hydrazide with Cu(II) was confirmed by absorption and emission spectroscopies and by confocal fluorescence imaging, through detection of the product rhodamine B. The results point to promising sensing applications of the prepared composite materials.

Continuous and rapid fabrication of photochromic fibers by facilely coating tungsten oxide/polyvinyl alcohol composites

Photochromic fibers have attracted great attention due to their wide use in areas of military camouflage, safety warnings, anti-counterfeiting, entertainment, etc. Compared with photochromic organic materials, inorganic photochromic tungsten trioxide (WO₃) materials have been extensively studied, because of their good stability and cost efficiency. In this work, we report the continuous fabrication of photochromic fibers in a simple and low-cost way by dip-coating WO₃/PVA composites. The prepared photochromic fibers show fast and reversible color switch from light yellow to dark blue upon UV irradiation and infrared heating treatment. The obtained photochromic fibers can be produced on a large scale and be woven into various patterns with good mechanical strength and washability, showing great potential in developing photochromic textiles.

Functional Aromatic Polyamides

We describe herein the state of the art following the last 8 years of research into aromatic polyamides, wholly aromatic polyamides or aramids. These polymers belong to the family of high performance materials because of their exceptional thermal and mechanical behavior. Commercially, they have been transformed into fibers mainly for production of advanced composites, paper, and cut and fire protective garments. Huge research efforts have been carried out to take advantage of the mentioned characteristics in advanced fields related to transport applications, optically active materials, electroactive materials, smart materials, or materials with even better mechanical and thermal behavior.
