Nanostructured PEDOT Coatings for Electrode-Neuron Integration

Neural electrodes have been developed for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke, sensory deficits, and neurological disorders based on the electrical stimulation of nerve tissue and recording of neural electrical activity. A low interface impedance and large active surface area for charge transfer and intimate contact between neurons and the electrode are critical to obtain high-quality neural signal and effective stimulation without causing damage to both tissue and electrode. In this study, a nanostructured poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coating with lots of long protrusions was created via a one-step electrochemical polymerization from a dichloromethane solution without any rigid or soft templates. The nanostructures on the PEDOT coating were basically formed by intertwined PEDOT nanofibers, which further enhanced the active surface area. The fuzzy PEDOT-modified microelectrodes exhibited an impedance as low as 1 kΩ at 1 kHz, which is much lower than those produced from aqueous 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) solution, and it was comparable with PEDOT films or composites created from/with template materials. Also, more than 150 times larger charge storage capacity density was obtained compared to the unmodified microelectrode. An in vitro biocompatibility test performed on PC12 cells and primary cells suggested that the PEDOT coatings support cell adhesion, growth, and neurite extension. These results suggest the great potential of the nanostructured PEDOT coating as an electroactive and biosafe intimate contact between the implanted neural electrode and neurons.

Yellow-to-brown and yellow-to-green electrochromic devices based on complexes of transition metal ions with a triphenylamine-based ligand

Transmissive-to-colored electrochromism has been achieved by combination of MLCT of transition metal complexes with the electrochromic properties of ligand molecules. The color transitions were from yellow to dark brown for the Fe(ii) complex, yellow to orange to bluish-green for the Co(ii) complex and yellow to green for the Zn(ii) complex. By using a metal ion-ligand coordination approach, the self-assembly of hydrazone-based ligands containing a triphenylamine group with appropriate metal salts (FeCl2, Co(ClO4)2 and Zn(BF4)2) produced novel complexes of the general formula [ML2]X2. The isolated complexes were characterized by spectroscopic methods, and the Co(ii) complex also by X-ray diffraction analysis. Thin films of the complexes have been obtained by a spray-coating method and they were used in the construction of electrochromic devices, which showed good electrochromic stability, a high color contrast of 47.5% for Fe(ii), 37.2% for Co(ii) and 33.7% for Zn(ii) complexes and fast coloring and bleaching times.

Benzothiadiazole bridged EDOT based donor-acceptor polymers with tunable optical, electrochemical, morphological and electrochromic performance: effects of solvents and electrolytes

Donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers have been widely studied for their tunable electronic properties, however, it is surprising that systematic studies on the effect of different solvents and electrolytes on their opto-electrochemical, morphological and electrochromic performance have drawn only little attention. In the presented work, nine different D-A polymer films, poly(4,7-di(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole) (a-i-P1), were electrosynthesised using different polar solvents (PC, MeCN and DCM) and supporting electrolytes (TBAPF6, TBAClO4 and TBABF4). A thorough study of these D-A polymer films using cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, FE-SEM, spectroelectrochemistry and electrochromic techniques has been performed. We found a significant effect of both the supporting electrolytes and solvents on the morphology of polymer films which correlates well with their opto-electronic properties. Films prepared using the TBAClO4/PC system show a smooth morphology with a significantly high coloration efficiency of 264 cm2 C-1 and an optical contrast of 65.3%. Such differences in the optical and electrochemical properties of polymer films were explained by the ion pair formation during polymerisation.

Structural and Morphological Evolution for Water-resistant Organic Thermoelectrics

We systematically investigated the effect of 2,5-bis(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropoxy)-1,4:3,6-dianhydro-sorbitol (Iso-GMA) with different concentrations on the structural and morphological evolution of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) containing a fixed volume of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to realize water-resistant organic thermoelectric devices. As an additive, Iso-GMA is a hydrophilic and crosslinking agent that can interact with PEDOT and PSS chains by hydrogen bonding and/or dipole-dipole- or dipole-charge-interaction. The Seebeck coefficient and power factor in the film incorporating 3.0 vol% DMSO and 0.8 vol% Iso-GMA were respectively 1.82 × 10² and 1.53 × 10⁵% higher than those of the pristine PEDOT:PSS film without additives (DMSO and Iso-GMA). These results can be attributed to the self-assembled and crosslinked fibril networks with optimized phase separation, where the film has densely-packed PEDOT and highly lamellar-stacked PSS. Also, the reduced charge carrier concentration from the structural characteristics originated in the higher thermoelectric properties. We introduced the schematic illustration to understand the chemical bonding among the components and the morphological evolution according to the Iso-GMA concentration. The increased mechanical strength by the interchain stacking degree of PEDOT and the crosslinking of Iso-GMA facilitate the film remained in a water bath for 0.5 h without physical degradation, and sustain the thermoelectric properties during 12 h in humid conditons.

Solvent effects on electrosynthesis, morphological and electrochromic properties of a nitrogen analog of PEDOT

A new nitrogen analog of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT), N-methyl-3,4-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]oxazine (MDTO), was electropolymerized in different solvents (deionized water, acetonitrile, and propylene carbonate) using LiClO4 as the electrolyte. The structure and performance of as-prepared PMDTO polymers were systematically studied by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEM, thermogravimetry, spectroelectrochemistry and electrochromic techniques. To our surprise, solvents had a major influence on the electropolymerization of MDTO and properties of the resultant polymers, including morphology, electrochemistry, electronic and optical properties, and electrochromics, etc. In aqueous solution, MDTO revealed the lowest onset oxidation potential (0.19 V) than in acetonitrile (0.48 V) and propylene carbonate (0.49 V). However, PMDTO films showed rather poor cycling stability in water, while outstanding stability in acetonitrile and propylene carbonate. Films prepared in propylene carbonate displayed a rather smooth morphology, lower band gap (1.65 eV), higher transparency (97.3%) and a contrast ratio (44.6%) at λ = 466 nm. PMDTO films obtained in acetonitrile showed significantly higher coloration efficiency (169.5 cm(2) C(-1)) than in other two solvents (∼ 97.6 cm(2) C(-1)) with a moderate contrast ratio (24.5%).

Influence of draw ratio on the structure and properties of PEDOT-PSS/PAN composite conductive fibers

Composite conductive fibers based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT-PSS) solution blended with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were obtained via wet spinning.
