Solvent- and Catalyst-free Synthesis, Hybridization and Characterization of Biobased Nonisocyanate Polyurethane (NIPU)

Nonisocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) is a research hotspot in polyurethane applications because it does not use phosgene. Herein, a novel method of solvent- and catalyst-free synthesis of a hybrid nonisocyanate polyurethane (HNIPU) is proposed. First, four diamines were used to react with ethylene carbonate to obtain four bis(hydroxyethyloxycarbonylamino)alkane (BHA). Then, BHA reacted with dimer acid under condensation in the melt to prepare four nonisocynate polyurethane prepolymers. Further, the HNIPUs were obtained by crosslinking prepolymers and resin epoxy and cured with the program temperature rise. In addition, four amines and two resin epoxies were employed to study the effects and regularity of HNIPUs. According to the results from thermal and dynamic mechanical analyses, those HNIPUs showed a high degree of thermal stability, and the highest 5% weight loss reached about 350 °C. More importantly, the utilization of these green raw materials accords with the concept of sustainable development. Further, the synthetic method and HNIPUs don't need isocyanates, catalysts, or solvents.

Optimization and modelling of enzymatic polymerization of ε-caprolactone to polycaprolactone using Candida Antartica Lipase B with response surface methodology and artificial neural network

Recently enzymatic catalysts have replaced organic and organometallic catalysts in the synthesis of bio-resorbable polymers. Enzymatic polymerization is considered as an alternative to conventional polymerization as they are less toxic, environmental friendly and can operate under mild conditions. In this research, the enzymatic ring-opening polymerization (e-ROP) of e-caprolactone (e-CL) using Candida Antartica Lipase B (CALB) as catalyst to produce the Polycaprolactone. Two modelling techniques namely response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) have been used in this work. RSM is used to optimize the parameters and to develop a model of the process. ANN is used to develop the model to predict the results obtained from the experiment. The parameters involved are time, reaction temperature, mixing speed and enzyme-solvent ratio. The experimental result is Polydispersity index (PDI) of the polymer. The experimental data obtained was adequately fitted into second-order polynomial models. Simulation was done using artificial neural network model developed with Mean absolute error (MAD) value of 1.65 in comparison with MAD value of 7.4 for RSM. The Regression value (R²) values of RSM and ANN were found to be 0.96 and 0.93 respectively. The predictive models were validated experimentally and were found to be in agreement with the experimental values.

Lipase-Catalyzed Synthesis, Properties Characterization, and Application of Bio-Based Dimer Acid Cyclocarbonate

Dimer acid cyclocarbonate (DACC) is synthesized from glycerol carbonate (GC) and Sapium sebiferum oil-derived dimer acid (DA, 9-[(Z)-non-3-enyl]-10-octylnonadecanedioic acid). Meanwhile, DACC can be used for synthetic materials of bio-based non-isocyanate polyurethane (bio-NIPU). In this study, DACC was synthesized by the esterification of dimer acid and glycerol carbonate using Novozym 435 (Candida antarctica lipase B) as the biocatalyst. Via the optimizing reaction conditions, the highest yield of 76.00% and the lowest acid value of 43.82 mg KOH/g were obtained. The product was confirmed and characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Then, the synthetic DACC was further used to synthesize bio-NIPU, which was examined by FTIR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), indicating that it possesses very good physio-chemical properties and unique material quality with a potential prospect in applications.

Synthesis, vibrational spectrometry and thermal characterizations of coordination polymers derived from divalent metal ions and hydroxyl terminated polyurethane as ligand

A series of novel coordination polyurethanes [HTPU-M, where M=Mn(II) 'd⁵', Ni(II) 'd⁸', and Zn(II) 'd¹⁰'] have been synthesized to investigate the effect of divalent metal ions coordination on structure, thermal and adsorption properties of low molecular weight hydroxyl terminated polyurethane (HTPU). HTPU-M have been synthesized in situ where, OH group of HTPU (synthesized by the condensation polymerization reaction of ethylene glycol (EG) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) in presence of catalyst) on condensation polymerization with metal acetate in presence of acid catalyst synthesized HTPU-M followed by coordination of metal ions with hetero atoms. The structure, composition and geometry of HTPU-M have been confirmed by vibrational spectrometry (FTIR), ¹H NMR, elemental analysis and UV-Visible spectroscopy. Morphological structures of HTPU-M were analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction analysis (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HR-TEM) techniques. The thermal degradation pattern and thermal stability of HTPU-M in comparison to HTPU was investigated by thermal-gravimetric (TG)/differential thermal (DT), analyses along with Integral procedure decomposition temperature (IPDT) by Doyle method. The molecular weight of HTPU was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The preliminary adsorption/desorption studies of HTPU-M for Congo red (CR) was studied by batch adsorption techniques. The results indicated that HTPU-M have amorphous, layered morphology with higher number of nano-sized grooves in comparison to HTPU. Coordination of metal to HTPU plays a key role in enhancing the thermal stability [HTPU-Ni(II)>HTPU-Mn(II)>HTPU-Zn(II)>HTPU]. The HTPU-M can be utilized for industrial waste water treatment by removing environmental pollutants.

Synthesis and characterization of biobased polyurethane/SiO2 nanocomposites from natural Sapium sebiferum oil

Novel Sapium sebiferum oil-based polyurethane nanocomposites with different content of nano-SiO₂ were successfully synthesized via in situ polymerization method.
