Nickel-Ion Activating Discarded COVID-19 Medical Surgical Masks for Forming Carbon-Nickel Composite Nanowires and Using as a High-Performance Lithium Battery Anode

With the prevalence of COVID-19, wearing medical surgical masks has become a requisite measure to protect against the invasion of the virus. Therefore, a huge amount of discarded medical surgical masks will be produced, which will become a potential hazard to pollute the environment and endanger the health of organisms without our awareness. Herein, a green and cost-effective way for the reasonable disposal of waste masks becomes necessary. In this work, we realized the transformation from waste medical surgical masks into high-quality carbon-nickel composite nanowires, which not only benefit the protection of the environment and ecosystem but also contribute to the realization of economic value. The obtained composite carbon-based materials demonstrate 70 S m-1 conductivity, 5.2 nm average pore diameters, 234 m2 g-1 surface areas, and proper graphitization degree. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the prepared carbon composite materials demonstrate a specific capacity of 420 mA h g-1 after 800 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g-1. It also displays good rate performance and decent cycling stability. Therefore, this study provides an approach to converting the discarded medical surgical masks into high-quality carbon nanowire anode materials to turn waste into treasure.

Polyimide-derived graphite barrier layer adhered to seed crystals to improve the quality of grown silicon carbide

A facial method was developed to in situ fabricate a graphite layer on a SiC seed crystal to reduce the formation of defects during the growth of SiC ingots. The formulated PI matrix combined with an appropriate coupling agent could strongly adhere to SiC and be transformed into protective layers for SiC seed crystals during SiC growth. The thermally conductive graphite layers on SiC effectively reduce the backside diffusion of Si, inhibit the loss of Si from seed crystals during high-temperature growing process, and consequently lead to fewer defects formed in the SiC ingot. The graphitization degree, chemical state, roughness and morphology of films were investigated in this work.

Highly Thermal Conductive Graphite Films Derived from the Graphitization of Chemically Imidized Polyimide Films

With the large-scale application and high-speed operation of electronic equipment, the thermal diffusion problem presents an increasing requirement for effective heat dissipation materials. Herein, high thermal conductive graphite films were fabricated via the graphitization of polyimide (PI) films with different amounts of chemical catalytic reagent. The results showed that chemically imidized PI (CIPI) films exhibit a higher tensile strength, thermal stability, and imidization degree than that of purely thermally imidized PI (TIPI) films. The graphite films derived from CIPI films present a more complete crystal orientation and ordered arrangement. With only 0.72% chemical catalytic reagent, the graphitized CIPI film achieved a high thermal conductivity of 1767 W·m-1·K-1, which is much higher than that of graphited TIPI film (1331 W·m-1·K-1), with an increase of 32.8%. The high thermal conductivity is attributed to the large in-plane crystallite size and high crystal integrity. It is believed that the chemical imidization method prioritizes the preparation of high-quality PI films and helps graphite films achieve an excellent performance.

Surface Characteristics of Polymers with Different Absorbance after UV Picosecond Pulsed Laser Processing Using Various Repetition Rates

We experimented with two polymer materials with different ultraviolet (UV) wavelength absorption characteristics, which are commonly used in flexible devices, by applying an ultrashort-pulsed laser of a 355-nm UV wavelength for 10 ps. The laser parameters studied were pulse repetition rate, laser irradiation method, and laser power condition. Previous studies using polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which does not exhibit linear absorption at a UV wavelength, have focused on processing trends resulting in minimal collateral damage around the laser-induced ablation. However, our results showed a trend of accumulating such damage irrespective of the laser parameters. Meanwhile, polyimide (PI) exhibited a completely different behavior depending on the laser parameters. At low pulse repetition rates, minimal collateral damage was observed, whereas at high repetition rates, the morphology varied considerably. The electrical characteristics of the laser-processed materials were found to be correlated with the variations in morphology. In the case of PI, such variations in electrical resistance and morphology indicated that the material was carbonized. The findings of this study are expected to provide a useful reference when selecting parameters for the laser processing of similar polymer materials.
