Bimetal-bridging Nitrogen Coordination in Carbon-based Electrocatalysts for pH-universal Oxygen Reduction

Electrocatalysts with atomically dispersed metal sites (e.g., metal-nitrogen-carbon) have been deemed as promising alternatives for noble-metal catalysts in couples of electrocatalytic reactions. However, the modulation of such atomic sites and the understanding of their interactions are still highly challenging. Herein, we propose a unique supermolecule assembly-profile coating strategy to prepare a series of diatomic electrocatalysts by profile coating of eight Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) on supramolecular supports respectively as bimetallic sources. The detailed microstructure analysis revealed that the metal-nitrogen-carbon sites with four- (Zn-N4 ) and five-coordination (Fe-N5 ) via the nitrogen coordination are similar to the cytochrome c oxidases. For promising electrocatalysis, such unique microstructure is able to activate oxygen molecules due to nitrogen-bonding coordination with bimetal sites, thus leading to efficient four-electron oxygen reduction in alkaline, neutral, and acid electrolytes. Especially, zinc group elements (e.g., Zn and Cd) with d10 electron configuration would significantly boost the nitrogen-bonding coordination with bimetal sites to enhance electrocatalytic activity. The proof-of-concept for the general synthesis of advanced electrocatalysts with controllable bimetal active sites and the mechanistic understanding will promote the promising electrocatalysis by applying the similar principles.

Low-power and low-drug-dose photodynamic chemotherapy via the breakdown of tumor-targeted micelles by reactive oxygen species

Tumor-targeted delivery of anticancer agents using nanocarriers has been explored to increase the therapeutic index of cancer chemotherapy. However, only a few nanocarriers are clinically available because the physiological complexity often compromises their ability to target, penetrate, and control the release of drugs. Here, we report a method which dramatically increases in vivo therapeutic drug efficacy levels through the photodynamic degradation of tumor-targeted nanocarriers. Folate-decorated poly(ethylene glycol)-polythioketal micelles are prepared to encapsulate paclitaxel and porphyrins. Photo-excitation generates reactive oxygen species within the micelles to cleave the polythioketal backbone efficiently and facilitate drug release only at the illuminated tumor site. Intravenous injection of a murine xenograft model with a low dose of paclitaxel within the micelles, one-milligram drug per kg (mouse), corresponding to an amount less than that of Taxol by one order of magnitude, induces dramatic tumor regression without any acute systemic inflammation responses or organ toxicity under low-power irradiation (55 mW cm^-2) at 650 nm.

Cucurbit[7]uril Induced Formation of FRET-Enabled Unilamellar Lipid Vesicles

A unique fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process is found to be operational in a unilamellar lipid self-assembly in the aqueous phase. A newly synthesized naphthyl based long chain lipid derivative [N-(naphthalene-1-ylmethyl)tetradecane-1-ammonium chloride, 14NA⁺] forms various self-assembled architectures in the aqueous phase. Controlled changes in lipid concentration lead to a transition of the self-assemblies from micelles to vesicles to rods. In the presence of cucurbit[7]uril (CB7), 14NA⁺ forms a host-guest [2]pseudorotaxane complex (CB7∋14NA⁺) and secondary interactions lead to the formation of a lipid bilayer with hydrophobic pockets situated in between the layers. The change in the structure of 14NA⁺ assemblies, interaction with CB7 and formation of supramolecular assemblies of CB7∋14NA⁺ were examined using light scattering, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques. Entrapment of a luminescent dye, anthracene within the hydrophobic bilayer of the supramolecular assembly CB7∋14NA⁺ favors a modified luminescent response due to an efficient FRET process. Further, the FRET process could be controlled by thermal and chemical stimuli that induce transformation of unilamellar vesicles.

Light and cucurbit[7]uril complexation dual-responsiveness of a cyanostilbene-based self-assembled system

A cyanostilbene-based amphiphile (CS) was synthesized, which could self-assemble into non-emissive bilayer vesicles and ultra-thin ribbons. Cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) could form an inclusion complex with CS with a significant hypochrome effect, giving a strong blue emission from non-emissive species. CS underwent photoisomerization induced by light irradiation, which allowed the membrane contraction into smaller vesicles.
