In Situ Coating of Polydopamine-AgNPs on Polyester Fabrics Producing Antibacterial and Antioxidant Properties

Nanoparticles are increasingly utilized as coating materials to improve the properties of polyester textiles. In this work, polyester textiles were successfully fabricated, with hydrazide groups serving as ligands for the entrapment of sliver ions and subsequent reduction to AgNPs. Polydopamine (PDA) was used in this work to impart antibacterial and antioxidant properties to the polyester textiles through its phenolic hydroxyl groups, which can convert silver ions into AgNPs. Moreover, glucose was used as a reducing agent to create AgNPs-loaded polyester hydrazide. ATR-FTIR, SEM, EDX, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile strength were used to characterize the pristine polyester, the polyester hydrazide, the PDA-coated AgNP-loaded polyester hydrazide and the AgNP-loaded polyester hydrazide. A broth test was also used to investigate the textile's antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Overall, the composite nanocoating with PDA-AgNPs demonstrated good tensile strength and antioxidant and antibacterial characteristics, implying the practicality of PDA-AgNPs coating polyester for biomedical textile applications.

Efficient and additive-free synthesis of morphology variant iron oxyhydroxide nanostructures for phosphate adsorption application

Iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) nanostructures of different shapes were successfully synthesized on flexible textile cloth of polyester using a novel and simple technique based on hydrolysis method. The technique used herein is newly designed specifically to improve the efficiency in terms of energy, simplicity and cost involved in large scale synthesis of nanostructured thin films. Additionally, the morphology of nano-sized iron oxyhydroxide could be tuned into different shapes through variation in the type of precursors used for synthesis. The uniformity and adhesion of the depositions were also found to be excellent as examined by qualitative techniques. The as-deposited samples exhibited monoclinic and orthorhombic structures of FeOOH. A significant variation in the shape of as-deposited FeOOH nanostructures with change in precursor was observed through morphological studies, which displayed lance-shaped, rounded clusters and rod-like growth features in different cases. The nanocrystalline FeOOH can be directly applied to attract and trap phosphate from water reservoirs, thus contributing to environmental solutions. The proposed technique can also be utilized to deposit larger areas, which could be suitable for practical applications.

A Facile Approach for Preparing Ag Functionalized Nonwoven Polypropylene Membrane to Improve Its Electrical Conductivity and Electromagnetic Shielding Performance

The commonly used preparation methods of polypropylene functionalization require special equipment to be put into use or take a long time, which limits its application. Therefore, a simple and economical method for preparing silver functionalized nonwoven polypropylene membrane was studied herein. Triethanolamine was first coated on the surface of the polypropylene, and then Ag was deposited on the surface of polypropylene using a continuous reduction reaction of triethanolamine and silver ions. Surface morphology, crystal structure, and surface chemistry during the preparation of Ag functionalized nonwoven polypropylene were investigated. The electrical conductivity, electromagnetic shielding properties, and washing durability of the treated nonwoven polypropylene were also studied. It was found that Ag was uniformly deposited on the surface of the nonwoven polypropylene, and the coating reaction did not change the chemical structure of the polypropylene. The crystallinity and thermal stability of polypropylene were improved after silver coated polypropylene. The washing experiment results showed that the weight gain rate of the treated nonwoven relative to the untreated sample after the 90 min washing ranged from 6.72% to 9.64%. The resistance test results showed that the maximum surface resistivity of Ag coated nonwoven polypropylene was about 1.95 × 10⁵ Ω, which was 64,615 times lower than the original. In addition, the results showed that the maximum electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of the Ag coated nonwoven polypropylene was about 71.6 dB, showing a very good electromagnetic shielding effect.

Microwave-Assisted Rapid Preparation of Nano-ZnO/Ag Composite Functionalized Polyester Nonwoven Membrane for Improving Its UV Shielding and Antibacterial Properties

The cost and efficiency of preparing ZnO/Ag composite functional polyester membrane affect their application, for which a rapid microwave-assisted method was studied for coating ZnO/Ag composite nanoparticles on polyester nonwoven. The surface morphology, crystalline structure, and surface chemistry of the uncoated and coated polyester nonwoven was investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric (TG), respectively. Washing stability, ultraviolet properties, and antibacterial properties of before and after treatment polyester nonwoven were also investigated. The results indicated that Ag/ZnO composite nanoparticles were successfully deposited on polyester nonwoven surface. The amount of silver nitrate added in reaction has an important effect on the morphology and structure of Ag/ZnO composite on the surface of polyester fiber. The washing experiment results show that the ZnO/Ag composite functional polyester nonwoven fabric prepared by this method exhibits good washing durability after 90 min of washing. The results of UV transmission analysis showed that polyester nonwoven has an obvious increase in ultraviolet resistant properties after Ag/ZnO composite coating. When 0.2 g of silver nitrate was added into 100 mL of the reaction solution, the mean ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of the treated polyester nonwoven reached a maximum of 219.8. The antibacterial results showed that the coated nonwoven against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was about 94.5% and 96.6%, respectively, showing very good antibacterial properties.

In-Situ sonosynthesis of Hedgehog-like nickel nanoparticles on polyester fabric producing magnetic properties

Recently, nano finishing of textiles is increasingly attracted many researchers to create new features on the products. Here a new fabric is introduced through simultaneous aminolysis and hydrolysis of polyester along with in-situ sonosynthesis of hedgehog shaped nickel nanoparticles on the fabric with magnetic properties. To do this, nickel sulfate, hydrazine hydrate, sodium hydroxide and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as a precursor, reducing agent, alkali and stabilizer respectively. Nickel sulfate was reduced to nickel nanoparticles with hydrazine hydrate at the adjusted pH with NaOH in the presence of PVP at 75 °C for 2 h. The polyester fabric was aminolyzed and hydrolyzed produced various functional groups on the fabric surface assisted nucleation and stabilization of nickel nanoparticles. The morphology, crystal phase, magnetic properties and chemical structure of the treated fabrics were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The optimized sample treated with 3.19 (mL) hydrazine hydrate, 3.99 (mL) sodium hydroxide and 0.41 (g) nickel sulfate showed reasonable saturation magnetization value of 4.5 emu g^-1. The treated fabrics showed no antibacterial and antifungal behavior indicating the safety of the products.

A robust super-paramagnetic TiO2:Fe3O4:Ag nanocomposite with enhanced photo and bio activities on polyester fabric via one step sonosynthesis

High intensity ultrasound was used for the synthesis and simultaneous deposition of TiO2:Fe3O4:Ag nanocomposites on polyester surface providing a feasible route for imparting magnetic and enhanced antibacterial and self-cleaning activities with controllable hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity at low temperature. Synergistic impact of sonochemistry and physical effects of ultrasound originating from implosive collapse of bubbles were responsible for the formation and adsorption of nanomaterials on the fabric surface during ultrasound irradiation. The increase in photocatalytic activity of TiO2 was obtained attributing to the co-operation of iron oxide and silver nanoparticles nucleated on TiO2 surface boosting the electron-hole pair separation and prolonging their recombination rate. The process was further optimized in terms of reagents concentrations including Fe(2+)/TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 molar ratios using central composite design in order to achieve the best self-cleaning property of the treated fabric. The magnetic measurements indicated the super-paramagnetic behavior of the treated fabric with saturation magnetization of 4.5 (emu/g). Findings suggest the potential of the proposed facial method in producing an intelligent fabric with durable multi-functional activities that can be suitable for various applications including medical, military, bio-separation, bio-sensors, magneto graphic printing, magnetic screens and magnetic filters.
