A novel tunable yellow–green emitting inorganic–organic luminescent hybrid molecule, CTP-PTZ, an assembly of six units of the PTZ hydrazone Schiff base on the periphery of inorganic heterocycle cyclotriphosphazene, is reported.

A POSS-Phosphazene Based Porous Material for Adsorption of Metal Ions from Water

The development of adsorptive materials continues to be an important area of research for removal of heavy metal ions from waste water. The adsorption capacity can be modulated by both physical and chemical modification of the adsorbent. Herein, we combine the unique properties of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and organocyclophosphazene as the building units to synthesize a hybrid porous material, abbreviated as PN-POSS. The synthetic method follows a Heck reaction between hexa(4-bromophenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene and octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS). The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis shows that the material possesses micro- and mesopores of 1.5 and 3.8 nm size and a surface area on the order of 500 m²  g^-1 . These attributes in combination with the donor ability of the phosphazene units qualify the material for high adsorption of Pb²⁺ , Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions with maximal adsorption capacities on the order of 1326, 1927 and 2654 mg g^-1 , respectively. The adsorbent exhibits a good regeneration performance and can be effectively used for water treatment.

Nitrogen Amelioration-Driven Carbon Dioxide Capture by Nanoporous Polytriazine

Nitrogen-enriched nanoporous polytriazines (NENPs) have been synthesized by ultrafast microwave-assisted condensation of melamine and cyanuric chloride. The experimental conditions have been optimized to tune the textural properties by synthesizing materials at different times, temperatures, microwave powers, and solvent contents. The maximum specific surface area (SA_BET) of 840 m² g^-1 was estimated in the sample (NENP-1) synthesized at 140 °C with a microwave power of 400 W and reaction time of 30 min. One of the major objectives of achieving a large nitrogen content as high as 52 wt % in the framework was realized. As predicted, the nitrogen amelioration has benefitted the application by capturing a very good amount of CO₂ of 22.9 wt % at 273 K and 1 bar. Moreover, the CO₂ storage capacity per unit specific surface area (per m² g^-1) is highest among the reported nanoporous organic frameworks. The interaction of the CO₂ molecules with the polytriazine framework was theoretically investigated by using density functional theory. The experimental CO₂ capture capacity was validated from the outcome of the theoretical calculations. The superior CO₂ capture capability along with the theoretical investigation not only makes the nanoporous NENPs superior adsorbents for the energy and environmental applications but also provides a significant insight into the fundamental understanding of the interaction of CO₂ molecules with the amine functionalities of the nanoporous frameworks.

Cyclophosphazene-Based Hybrid Nanoporous Materials as Superior Metal-Free Adsorbents for Gas Sorption Applications

Cyclophosphazene-based inorganic-organic hybrid nanoporous materials (CHNMs) have been synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The condensation of pyrrole with the reaction product of phosphonitrilic chloride trimer and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde resulted in the formation of high-surface-area CHNMs. The maximum specific surface area (SA_BET) of 1328 m² g^-1 with hierarchical pore structures having micropores centered at 1.18 nm and mesopores in the range of 2.6-3.6 nm was estimated from the N₂ sorption analysis. Observation of high SA_BET could be attributed to the synergy effect exerted by the cyclophosphazene moiety owing to its three-dimensional paddle wheel structure. The metal-free adsorbent exhibited a high and reversible CO₂ uptake of 22.8 wt % at 273 K and 1 bar. The performance is on the higher side among the reported metal-free inorganic-organic hybrid nanoporous adsorbents. Moreover, the high H₂ uptake of 2.02 wt % at 77 K and 1 bar is an added advantage. The superior performance of the adsorbents for the gas sorption applications could be attributed to the combined effect of high SA_BET and hierarchical pore structure, which has made CHNMs good candidates for energy and environmental applications.

Tunable Porosity of Cross-Linked-Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Supports for Palladium-Catalyzed Aerobic Alcohol Oxidation in Water

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based materials, poly-POSS-T_n [n = 8 (1), 10 (2), 12 (3), and mix (4)], were prepared in high yields via free radical polymerization of corresponding pure forms of methacrylate-functionalized POSS monomers, MMA-POSS-T_n (n = 8, 10, 12), and the mixture form, MMA-POSS-T_mix. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra and BET analysis indicate that 1-4 are amorphous materials with high surface areas (683-839 m² g^-1). The surface areas and total pore volumes follow the trend: poly-POSS-T₁₂ > poly-POSS-T₁₀ > poly-POSS-T_mix > poly-POSS-T₈. In addition, on the basis of Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analysis, poly-POSS-T₁₂ contains the highest amount of mesopores. The Pd nanoparticles immobilized on poly-POSS-T_n [n = 8 (5), 10 (6), 12 (7), and mix (8)] are well dispersed with 4-6 wt % Pd content and similar average particle sizes of 6.2-6.5 nm, according to transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (TEM-EDX) and microwave plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES). At 90 °C, the stabilized Pd nanoparticles in 5-8 catalyzed aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in 72-100% yields at 6 h using a mixture of a H₂O/Pluronic (P123) solution. The PdNp@poly-POSS-T₈ catalyst (5) exhibited the lowest catalytic activity, as a result of its lowest surface areas, total pore volumes, and amounts of mesopores. With the catalyst 8, various benzyl alcohol derivatives were converted to the corresponding aldehydes in good to excellent yields. However, with alcoholic substrates featuring electron-withdrawing substituents, high conversions were achieved with 1 equiv of K₂CO₃ additive and longer reaction times.

Silver(I) coordination polymers assembled from flexible cyclotriphosphazene ligand: structures, topologies and investigation of the counteranion effects

The reactions of a flexible ligand hexakis(3-pyridyloxy)cyclotriphosphazene (HPCP) with a variety of silver(I) salts (AgX;X= NO3−, PF6−, ClO4−, CH3PhSO3−, BF4−and CF3SO3−) afforded six silver(I) coordination polymers, namely {[Ag2(HPCP)]·(NO3)2·H2O}n(1), {[Ag2(HPCP)(CH3CN)]·(PF6)2}n(2), {[Ag2(HPCP)(CH3CN)]·(ClO4)2}n(3), [Ag3(HPCP)(CH3PhSO3)3]n(4), [Ag2(HPCP)(CH3CN)(BF4)2]n(5) and {[Ag(HPCP)]·(CF3SO3)}n(6). All of the isolated crystalline compounds were structurally determined by X-ray crystallography. Changing the counteranions in the reactions, which were conducted under similar conditions ofM/Lratio (1:1), temperature and solvent, resulted in structures with different types of topologies. In complexes (1)–(6), the ligand HPCP shows different coordination modes with AgIions giving two-dimensional layered structures and three-dimensional frameworks with different topologies. Complex (1) displays a new three-dimensional framework adopting a (3,3,6)-connected 3-nodal net with point symbol {4.62}2{42.610.83}. Complexes (2) and (3) are isomorphous and have a two-dimensional layered structure showing the same 3,6L60 topology with point symbol {4.26}2{48.66.8}. Complex (4) is a two-dimensional structure incorporating short Ag...Ag argentophilic interactions and has a uninodal 4-connectedsql/Shubnikov tetragonal plane net with {44.62} topology. Complex (5) exhibits a novel three-dimensional framework and more suprisingly contains twofold interpenetrated honeycomb-like networks, in which the single net has a trinodal (2,3,5)-connected 3-nodal net with point symbol {63.86.12}{63}{8}. Complex (6) crystallizes in a trigonal crystal system with the space group R\bar 3 and possesses a three-dimensional polymeric structure showing a binodal (4,6)-connectedfshnet with the point symbol (43.63)2.(46.66.83). The effect of the counteranions on the formation of coordination polymers is discussed in this study.

Iron phthalocyanine modified mesoporous titania nanoparticles for photocatalytic activity and CO2 capture applications

An iron(II)phthalocyanine (Fepc) modified mesoporous titania (Fepc-TiO2) nanocatalyst with a specific surface area of 215 m(2) g(-1) has been synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Fepc-TiO2 degrades one of the highly toxic chemical warfare agents, sulfur mustard (SM), photocatalytically under sunlight with an exposure time of as low as 70 min. Furthermore, the mesoporous Fepc-TiO2 also captured 2.1 mmol g(-1) of CO2 at 273 K and 1 atm.
