Abstract
A temperature-responsive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with "ON-OFF" switching based on poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) block copolymer microgels have been designed and synthesized. The PIL units act as a joint component to anchor the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and analytes onto poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm). This anchor allows the analytes to be fixed at the formed hot spots under temperature stimulus. Owing to the regulation of the PNIPAm segment, the SERS substrates exhibit excellent thermally responsive SERS activity with a reversible "ON-OFF" effect. Additionally, because of the anion exchange of PILs, microgels can introduce new analytes, which offers more flexibility for the system. The substrate shows excellent reversibility, controllability, and flexibility of SERS activity, which is expected to have a broad application in the field of practical SERS sensors.

Abstract
The interplay of soft responsive particles, such as microgels, with nanoparticles (NPs) yields highly versatile complexes that show great potential for applications, ranging from plasmonic sensing to catalysis and drug delivery. However, the microgel-NP assembly process has not been investigated so far at the microscopic level, thus hindering the possibility of designing such hybrid systems a priori. In this work, we combine state-of-the-art numerical simulations with experiments to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms taking place when microgel-NP assembly is controlled by electrostatic interactions and the associated effects on the structure of the resulting complexes. We find a general behavior where, by increasing the number of interacting NPs, the microgel deswells up to a minimum size after which a plateau behavior occurs. This occurs either when NPs are mainly adsorbed to the microgel corona via the folding of the more external chains or when NPs penetrate inside the microgel, thereby inducing a collective reorganization of the polymer network. By varying microgel properties, such as fraction of cross-linkers or charge, as well as NP size and charge, we further show that the microgel deswelling curves can be rescaled onto a single master curve, for both experiments and simulations, demonstrating that the process is entirely controlled by the charge of the whole microgel-NP complex. Our results thus have a direct relevance in fundamental materials science and offer novel tools to tailor the nanofabrication of hybrid devices of technological interest.

Abstract
The vinyl caprolactam (VCL) based microgel system has become the center of great attention due to its versatile properties. Copolymerization of VCL with an ionic monomer imparts pH responsive properties into the microgel system in addition to thermo-sensitivity. Stimuli responsive behavior of VCL-based microgels makes them prospective and appealing candidates for practical applications covering the fields of drug delivery, catalysis and optical devices. In the last few years, VCL-based microgels have been used as microreactors and stabilizers for the synthesis and stabilization of inorganic nanoparticles to obtain hybrid microgels. The present review article provides a summary of the present-day progress of fabrication, stabilization, categorization and analysis of VCL-based microgels and their hybrids with different morphologies. The stimuli responsive properties and applications of VCL-based hybrid microgels have been reviewed critically. The remaining problems which need to be addressed have been pointed out for further advancement in this field.

Abstract
Herein, a novel method for the in situ growth of single gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in microgel (MG) networks is presented. The key feature in this approach is the localization of β-diketone groups capable of both complexation and reduction of aurate ions in the MGs' core, which allows localization of the nucleation and growth of single AuNPs. The MG synthesis is carried out via precipitation polymerization in water with N-vinylcaprolactam as the main monomer and with the two comonomers acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) and acrylic acid (AAc), where AAEM is mainly located in the MGs' core and AAc in their shell. For the synthesis of AuNPs, a certain amount of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4 ) is added to the dispersion, followed by fast reduction with sodium borohydride (NaBH4 ). In situ synthesized AuNPs in MGs possess a spherical shape, with a diameter of 8.1 ± 0.8 nm, being localized in the center of every MG. In addition, these AuNPs embedded into MG networks can be used as seeds that grow in their size after the addition of HAuCl4 up to 46.0 ± 9.5 nm under mild reaction conditions (room temperature, aqueous dispersion) and without the use of any additional reducing and stabilizing agents.

Abstract
One strategy that has gained much attention in the last decades is the understanding and further mimicking of structures and behaviours found in nature, as inspiration to develop materials with additional functionalities. This review presents recent advances in stimuli-responsive gels with emphasis on functional hydrogels and microgels. The first part of the review highlights the high impact of stimuli-responsive hydrogels in materials science. From macro to micro scale, the review also collects the most recent studies on the preparation of hybrid polymeric microgels composed of a nanoparticle (able to respond to external stimuli), encapsulated or grown into a stimuli-responsive matrix (microgel). This combination gave rise to interesting multi-responsive functional microgels and paved a new path for the preparation of multi-stimuli "smart" systems. Finally, special attention is focused on a new generation of functional stimuli-responsive polymer hydrogels able to self-shape (shape-memory) and/or self-repair. This last functionality could be considered as the closing loop for smart polymeric gels.

Abstract
The thermal-induced phase transition behavior of a LCST-type poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) aqueous solution with gemini-cationic structure, poly[(1,8-octanediyl-bis(tri-n-butylphosphonium)4-styrene sulfonate)] (P[SS-P2]), was investigated in this paper. Based on the calorimetric measurements, a unique dependence of transition points on concentration was found in P[SS-P2] aqueous solution compared to its mono-cationic PIL and [SS-P2] aqueous solution. Optical microscopy showed that globular microscopic droplets were formed during the phase transition, suggesting that gemini dications and the possible dynamic ionic bonds may facilitate the liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in P[SS-P2] aqueous solution. Temperature-variable 1H NMR and FT-IR investigations manifested that the dehydration of anionic chains instead of the dehydration of dications served as the driving force of the phase separation in the P[SS-P2] aqueous solution, implying that the polymerized anions tended to aggregate together first and lay in the core with dications distributed around the globules at the end of the transition process. Notably, considering that the SO3 groups in the gemini-cationic system tended to be distributed around the surface of collapsed anionic main chains rather than be wrapped into the aggregates, it is supposed that dynamic ionic bonding between dication and anionic backbones was distributed in the periphery of the globules and acted as the "cross-linkers", which enhanced the stability of regular droplets after the phase transition in P[SS-P2] aqueous solution.

Abstract
In this paper, we investigated the internal structure and the volume phase transition (VPT) behavior of poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-co-vinylimidazole)/polymerizable carbon nanodot (P(VCL-co-VIM)/PCND) microgels with different amounts of PCNDs. Our study shows that compared to the pure P(VCL-co-VIM) microgel, the hybrid microgels undergo a two-step VPT as the temperature increases and a core-shell(-corona) structure of the hybrid microgels is formed by copolymerization with PCNDs. A change in the amount of PCNDs has effects on both of the volume phase transition temperature and internal structure of microgels. Moreover, based on FT-IR in combination with perturbation correlation moving window (PCMW) and two-dimensional correlation spectral (2Dcos) analyses, the difference in VPT behavior between the shell and the core (corona) structure of the hybrid microgels at the molecular level is elucidated. The core/shell of the hybrid microgels fixed with hydrophilic PCNDs has a higher transition temperature during heating and a more compact structure due to the additional crosslinkers PCNDs.
