Fine Structure and the Huge Zero-Field Splitting in Ni2+ Complexes

We perform a thorough study of the ground state magnetic properties of nickel-based 3d8 complexes. This includes an in-depth analysis of the contribution of the crystal field, spin exchange and spin-orbit interactions to the ground state magnetic properties. Of particular interest to the current investigation are the presence and occurrence of non-trivial zero-field splitting. The study focuses on the cases of Ni2+ ideal octahedral, trigonal bipyramidal, square planar and tetrahedral geometries. We provide results for the complete energy spectrum, the fine structure related to the ground state and the second set of excited states, low-field magnetic susceptibility and magnetization. In addition, we examine the zero-field fine structure in square pyramidal, trigonal pyramidal and trigonal planar complexes. The obtained results unequivocally show that a moderate or highly coordinated 3d8 complex can neither exhibit spin-orbit-driven large and giant magnetic anisotropy nor a huge zero-field splitting. Moreover, in the trigonal bipyramidal coordination, a fine structure associated to the ground state cannot result from the spin-orbit coupling alone.

Asymmetric Assembly of Chiral Lanthanide(III) Tetranuclear Cluster Complexes Using Achiral Mixed Ligands: Single-molecule Magnet Behavior and Magnetic Entropy Change

It is challenging to use achiral ligands to spontaneously construct chiral molecular magnets. In this work, two new Ln4 cluster complexes based on N,N'-(1,3-propanediyl)bis[N-[1,1-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-hydroxyethyl]amine] (H6L) have been assembled, which are crystallized in a chiral space group due to the asymmetric distribution of acetate (OAc-) groups and hexafluoroacetylacetonate (F6acac-) groups on both sides of the parallelogram-like Ln4 core. Complex 1, [Dy4(H3L)2(OAc)3(F6acac)3]·5MeOH·2H2O, exhibits single-molecule magnet properties at the zero field with the U eff/k value of 48.4 K; notably, besides the Orbach process, the Raman process is also prominent for the magnetic relaxation of 1. Complex 2, [Gd4(H3L)2(OAc)3(F6acac)3]·4MeOH·2.5H2O, displays a large magnetocaloric effect, whose largest -ΔS m value is 21.88 J kg-1 K-1 (when T = 2 K and ΔH = 5 T); it thus can be utilized as a good magnetic refrigeration molecular material.

Carboxylate-Decorated Aggregation of Octanuclear Co4Ln4 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Yb) Complexes from Ligand-Controlled Hydrolysis: Synthesis, Structures, and Magnetic Properties

One-pot reactions of an asymmetric carboxy-ether-phenol based Schiff base H₂L (2-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)amino)benzoic acid) with selected Ln(NO₃)₃·nH₂O and [Co₂(μ-OH₂)(O₂CCMe₃)₄(HO₂CCMe₃)₄] (Co₂-Piv) in basic MeOH medium resulted in a family of three octanuclear complexes, [Co^II₄Ln^III₄L₄(μ_1,3-Piv)₄(μ_1,1,3-Piv)₂(η¹-Piv)₂(μ₃-OH)₄(MeOH)₂]·mMeOH·nH₂O (Ln = Dy; m = 3, n = 1 (1), Ho; m = 4, n = 0 (2), Yb; m = 3, n = 1 (3)). The coordination aggregates thus obtained were nicely sustained by four ligand anions and eight externally added carboxylate anions showing three different modes of intermetallic connectivity. The options for incorporating different 4f ions in an investigative synthesis, without altering the resulting intermetallic core structure, were successful for the three representative examples. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the compounds are isostructural and built from two initially formed partial dicubane-type Co₂Ln₂L₂ units. In each of the tetranuclear parts, the metal ion centers are held together by two L^2-, two μ₃-HO^-, three Piv^- bridges, one terminal Piv^-, and one terminal MeOH. Four carboxylate ends of four L^2- units are responsible for connecting two Co₂Ln₂ units into octanuclear structures. The unique distortion around the Co^II centers is achieved from the facile coordination of bigger 4f ions to the adjacent hard OO sites. The distortion is further maintained by the presence of terminal COO^- groups from L^2-. The dc magnetic susceptibility data revealed ferromagnetic coupling between the Co^II and Ln^III centers within the series, whereas the ac magnetic susceptibility measurements identified only 1, having a highly anisotropic Dy^III ion, as a single-molecule magnet in the absence of any external magnetic field, with an energy barrier U_eff of 12.5 K.

Fine Tuning the Energy Barrier of Molecular Nanomagnets via Lattice Solvent Molecules

Solvents play important roles in our lives, they are also of interest in molecular materials, especially for molecular magnets. The solvatomagnetic effect is generally used for trigger and/or regulation of magnetic properties in molecule-based systems, however, molecular nanomagnets showing solvatomagnetic effects are very difficult to obtain. Here we report four 3d-4f heterometallic cluster complexes containing ROH lattice solvent molecules, [Cu₃Tb₂(H₃L)₂(OAc)₂(hfac)₄]∙2ROH {H₆L = 1,3-Bis[tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]propane, hfac^- = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; R = CH₃, 1; R = C₂H₅, 2; R = C₃H₇, 3; R = H, 4}. Single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties of these four complexes were observed to be dependent on the ROH lattice solvent molecule. There is an interesting magneto-structural correlation: the larger the R group, the higher the energy barrier. For the first time, the solvatomagnetic effect is used for the continuous fine adjustment of the energy barrier of 0D molecular nanomagnets. Additionally, [Cu₃Dy₂(H₃L)₂(OAc)₂(hfac)₄]∙2MeOH (5), an analogue of [Cu₃Tb₂(H₃L)₂(OAc)₂(hfac)₄]∙2MeOH (1), is also reported for comparison.
