Cold plasma synthesis of phosphorus-doped CoFe2O4 with oxygen vacancies for enhanced OER activity

Spinel-type metal oxides are promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their unique electronic structure and low cost. Herein, we induced oxygen vacancies and doped phosphorus into CoFe2O4 using cold plasma. The abundant oxygen vacancies enhanced hydrophilicity and modified the electronic structure of CoFe2O4, while the phosphorus doping formed numerous new active centers. The doped P and formed FeP promoted the charge transfer and improved the conductivity of the catalyst. The phosphorus-doped CoFe2O4 exhibited exceptional OER activity with an overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 65.8 mV dec-1 in an alkaline electrolyte. DFT calculations confirmed that phosphorus doping can improve the charge distribution near the Fermi level and optimize the d-band center position.

Experimental and DFT studies on the ultrasonic energy-assisted extraction of the phytochemicals of Catharanthus roseus as green corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in NaCl medium

Catharanthus roseus (Apocynaceae family) extract is rich in organic phytochemicals such as alkaloids, polyphenolic compounds, and flavonoids. It contains several functional entities such as fused heterocycles, and hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, which could be useful for corrosion inhibition of mild steel in NaCl environments. In the present work, ultrasonic energy was used to obtain the ethanolic extracts of root and stem which were then tested as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in the presence of 3.5% NaCl. The corrosion inhibition process was studied by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, weight loss, and electrochemical methods. After immersing in the corrosive medium, the microstructures of mild steel were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ellipsometry. The extract of C. roseus showed excellent adsorption on mild steel surface as confirmed by DFT calculations. The results indicate that the extract of C. roseus acts as a mixed type corrosion inhibitor, where the stem extract is the most efficient inhibitor in 3.5% NaCl solution possibly due to the higher active area of stem phytochemicals.

C. roseus phytochemicals are physisorbed on the 111 Fe surface, and the oxygen non-bonding electron chemisorbed on the polarized state 111 Fe surface.

Wear and corrosion resistance of Co–P coatings: the effects of current modes

In this work, Co–P coatings were deposited from a chloride-based bath by direct current (DC), pulse current (PC) and pulse reverse current (PRC) methods, respectively. The effects of current modes on the microstructure, composition, microhardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the Co–P coatings were explored. Results showed that the P content in the Co–P coatings increased and the surface roughness decreased in the sequence of DC, PC and PRC methods. The coatings with low P content deposited by DC and PC methods are crystalline with fcc and hcp structures, respectively, while the coating with high P content deposited by the PRC method is amorphous. Comparing to DC and PC methods, the PRC method can evidently improve the microhardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of Co–P coatings. The excellent wear and corrosion resistance of the Co–P coatings deposited by the PRC method could be attributed to its high P content, smooth surface and amorphous structure.

The P content in the Co–P coatings increased in the sequence of DC, PC and PRC methods. The PRC Co–P coating has better wear and corrosion resistance than DC and PC Co–P coatings.

Effect of Waveform and Heat Treatment Processes on the Performance of Electrodeposited Co-P Coating

Cobalt-phosphorus (Co-P) alloy is a promising material for the replacement of traditional hard chromium alloy of high hardness. In this paper, the cobalt-phosphorus alloy layer with high phosphorus content was formed by electrodeposition in a cobalt sulfate solution system under direct current (DC), single pulse (SP) current and double pulse (DP) current, separately. Surface morphology, structure and properties of the deposited layer were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Vickers microhardness and a neutral salt spray test, respectively. The results showed that the dense Co-P coatings could be obtained by DC, SP and DP with P content of 9.6, 8.9 and 9.1 wt %, respectively. After 30 min heat treatment at 400 °C, coatings deposited under DC, SP and DP currents transformed from an amorphous to a nanocrystalline state, while the grain size was 12–13 nm, 10–12 nm and 8–10 nm, respectively. Among all these conditions, the microhardness of coatings deposited under DP current was the highest, which was 1211 HV, while the microhardness of coatings deposited under DC current was the lowest but higher than that of hard chromium. The wear rate of Co-P coatings was 4 × 10−6–5 × 10−6 mm3/N m with Si3N4 ball as bearing material, which was lower than that of hard chromium. In coatings deposited under different currents with a thickness of ca. 40 μm, no visible corrosion area appeared after 1000 h of a neutral salt spray test. Coatings heated at 300 and 400 °C reached the corrosion grade 7 and grade 4–5, respectively after 1000 h of a neutral salt spray test, so the wear resistance of Co-P coatings was better than that of hard chromium.
