Combination of Energetic Tetrazole and Triazole: Promising Materials with Exceptional Stability and Low Mechanical Sensitivity as Propellants and Gas Generators

An innovative synthesis of 5-((1H-tetrazol-5-yl)methyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3,4-diamine (TMT) based on triazole and tetrazole frameworks bearing double amino groups was reported. It is worth mentioning that TMT is insensitive to impact and friction (IS > 40 J, FS > 360 N), thus enabling it to have an exceptional thermal decomposition behavior that is superior to RDX and TNT. Meanwhile, it also has relatively high energetic performance (D_v = 8.417 km/s). A series of energy-containing salts TMT-1-8 were also investigated for their potential applications. Except for TMT-4 and TMT-7, the remaining nitrogen-rich salts have initial decomposition temperatures above 200 °C. Furthermore, the salts with positive heat generation all have extraordinary gas production, especially for TMT-1 (V_o = 840.5 dm³/kg), TMT-2 (V_o = 803.9 dm³/kg), and TMT-7 (V_o = 844.3 dm³/kg). The low mechanical sensitivities of the TMT series were discovered, and a majority of them have impact sensitivities exceeding 40 J with friction sensitivities exceeding 360 N which are superior to TNT (IS = 15 J, FS = 353 N). The intermolecular and intramolecular interactions of the crystals TMT-1-3 were explored by Hirshfeld surfaces, 2D fingerprint plots, noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis, and electrostatic potential surface analysis to understand the physicochemical property changes in relation to the structure. Consequently, this novel tri/tetrazole and polyamine system as a promising material provides the impetus for the development of gas generators and propellants.

Hydrogen bond strengthening between o-nitroaniline and formaldehyde in electronic excited states: A theoretical study

To study the hydrogen bonds upon photoexcited, the time dependent density function method (TD DFT) was performed to investigate the excited state hydrogen bond properties of between o-nitroaniline (ONA) and formaldehyde (CH₂O). The optimized structures of the complex and the monomers both in the ground state and the electronically excited states are calculated using DFT and TD DFT method respectively. Quantum chemical calculations of the electronic and vibrational absorption spectra are also carried out by TD DFT method at the different level. The complex ONA⋯CH₂O forms the intramolecular hydrogen bond and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Since the strength of hydrogen bonds can be measured by studying the vibrational absorption spectra of the characteristic groups on the hydrogen bonding acceptor and donor, it evidently confirms that the hydrogen bonds is strengthened in the S₁/S₂/T₁ excited states upon photoexcitation. As a result, the hydrogen bonds cause that the CH stretch frequency of the proton donor CH₂O has a blue shift, and the electron excitations leads to a frequency red shift of NO and NH stretch modes in the o-nitroaniline(ONA) and a small frequency blue shift of CH stretch mode in the formaldehyde(CH₂O) in the S₁ and S₂ excited states. The excited states S₁, S₂ and T₁ are locally excited states where only the ONA moiety is excited, but the CH₂O moiety remains in its ground state.

A Combination of Chemometrics and Quantum Mechanics Methods Applied to Analysis of Femtosecond Transient Absorption Spectrum of Ortho-Nitroaniline

A combination of the advanced chemometrics method with quantum mechanics calculation was for the first time applied to explore a facile yet efficient analysis strategy to thoroughly resolve femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy of ortho-nitroaniline (ONA), served as a model compound of important nitroaromatics and explosives. The result revealed that the ONA molecule is primarily excited to S3 excited state from the ground state and then ultrafast relaxes to S2 state. The internal conversion from S2 to S1 occurs within 0.9 ps. One intermediate state S* was identified in the intersystem crossing (ISC) process, which is different from the specific upper triplet receiver state proposed in some other nitroaromatics systems. The S1 state decays to the S* one within 6.4 ps and then intersystem crossing to the lowest triplet state within 19.6 ps. T1 was estimated to have a lifetime up to 2 ns. The relatively long S* state and very long-lived T1 one should play a vital role as precursors to various nitroaromatic and explosive photoproducts.
