Photo-assisted microbial fuel cell systems: critical review of scientific rationale and recent advances in system development

Bioelectrochemical systems such as microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have gained extensive attention due to their abilities to simultaneously treat wastewater and generate renewable energy resources. Recently, to boost the system performance, the photoelectrode has been incorporated into MFCs for effectively exploiting the synergistic interaction between light and microorganisms, and the resultant device is known as photo-assisted microbial fuel cells (photo-MFCs). Combined with the metabolic reaction of organic compounds by microorganisms, photo-MFCs are capable of simultaneously converting both chemical energy and light energy into electricity. This article aims to systematically review the recent advances in photo-MFCs, including the introduction of specific photosynthetic microorganisms used in photo-MFCs followed by the discussion of the fundamentals and configurations of photo-MFCs. Moreover, the materials used for photoelectrodes and their fabrication approaches are also explored. This review has shown that the innovative strategy of utilizing photoelectrodes in photo-MFCs is promising and further studies are warranted to strengthen the system stability under long-term operation for advancing practical application.

A DFT study to probe homo-conjugated norbornylogous bridged spacers in dye-sensitized solar cells: an approach to suppressing agglomeration of dye molecules

This work reports a sigma-bridged framework as spacers to design new dye-sensitized solar cells. The norbornylogous bridged spacer can avoid π–π aggregation of dye molecules on the semiconductor surface in DSSCs. These sesquinorbornatrienes are known to exhibit electron propagation through the interaction of sigma and π orbitals via through bond (OITB) and through space (OITS) mechanisms. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed with these spacers and a modelled simple donor unit like N,N-dimethylamine and cyanoacrylic acid as the anchoring group showed significant results with the requisite optical parameters for DSSCs. The newly designed dyes have shown comparable or better optical properties compared to the reference dye molecule with π-conjugated thiophene spacer units. The ΔG_injection, V_OC and μ_normal values calculated for the designed dyes were found to be higher than those of the reference system. The trans-sesquinorbornatriene system spacer (6-D) showed a V_OC of 3.3 eV, ΔG_injection of 2.4 eV and oscillatory strength (f) of 0.96. The total and partial density of states indicates a good communication between the valence and conduction band for the designed dyes. Transition density matrix results suggest that the exciton dissociation in the excited state is sufficiently high to overcome the coulombic attraction of the hole. These results are promising for the design of dye molecules with such scaffolds, to achieve better efficiency and to eliminate one of the major issues with π-spacer units in DSSCs.

This work reports homoconjugated norbornylogous spacers to supress agglomeration of dye molecules with improved efficiency of dye sensitized solar cells.

Mesoscopic perovskite solar cells with an admixture of nanocrystalline TiO₂ and Al₂O₃: role of interconnectivity of TiO₂ in charge collection

Perovskite solar cells with high power conversion efficiency usually employ mesoporous TiO2, however the role of the TiO2 layer has not been clearly resolved. Here we prepared MAPbI3 (MA = CH3NH3) perovskite solar cells with an admixture of nanocrystalline TiO2 and Al2O3 to investigate the role of the mesoporous TiO2 layer. The Al2O3 content was varied from 0% (pure TiO2) to 100% (pure Al2O3) with nominal composition of (1 - x)TiO2 + xAl2O3 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1). The photocurrent density and fill factor decreased as Al2O3 content increased, whereas the open-circuit voltage was hardly changed. Steady-state photoluminescence (PL) was less quenched as the Al2O3 content increased due to its non-electron-injecting characteristics, where a decrease in PL intensity with increasing TiO2 content was correlated to an increase in photocurrent. Electron injection to TiO2 was also evidenced by time-resolved PL and time-limited photocurrent measurements, where interconnection of TiO2 particles played an important role in charge collection. The slight change in voltage with Al2O3 content was explained by balancing the Fermi position due to a trade-off between charge recombination and the Fermi level. The results observed from the admixture mesoporous layer comprising electron-injecting and electron-non-injecting oxides suggest that electron-injection characteristics play an important role in determining photovoltaic parameters.

Facile synthesis of pure phase γ-AlOOH and γ-Al2O3nanofibers in a recoverable ionic liquid via a low temperature route

Mesoporous γ-AlOOH and γ-Al₂O₃with fibrous morphology were successfully synthesized by an ionic liquid ([OMim]Br) assisted low temperature precipitation method using aluminum nitrate and ammonia as aluminum source and precipitant, respectively.
