Abstract
We present a bifunctional heptanuclear cobalt(II)/cobalt(III) molecular complex formulated as [Co7(μ3-OH)4(H2L1)2(HL2)2](NO3)6·6H2O (1) (where H5L1 is 2,2'-(((1E,1'E)-((2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(methanylylidene))bis(azanylylidene))bis(propane-1,3-diol)) and H2L2 is 2-amino-1,3-propanediol). Compound 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis along with other spectral and magnetic measurements. Structural analysis indicates that 1 contains a mixed-valence Co7 cluster where a central Co(II) ion is connected to six different Co centers (four CoIII and two CoII ions) by four μ3-OH groups, giving rise to a planar heptanuclear cluster that resembles a molecular fragment of a layered double hydroxide (LDH). Two triply deprotonated (H2L1)3- ligands form the outer side of the cluster while two singly deprotonated (HL2)- ligands are located at the top and bottom of the central heptanuclear core. Variable temperature magnetic measurements indicate the presence of weak ferromagnetic CoII···CoII interactions (J = 3.53(6) cm-1) within the linear trinuclear CoII cluster. AC susceptibility measurements show that 1 is a field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) with τ0 = 8.2(7) × 10-7 s and Ueff = 11.3(4) K. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of 1 in homogeneous phase shows an overpotential of 455 mV, with a Faradaic efficiency of 81% and a TOF of 8.97 × 104 μmol H2 h-1 mol-1.

Abstract
Three novel complexes, namely, penta-μ-acetato-bis(μ2-2-{[2-(6-chloropyridin-2-yl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}-6-methoxyphenolato)-μ-formato-tetramanganese(II), [Mn4(C13H11ClN3O2)2(C2H3O2)5.168(CHO2)0.832], 1, hexa-μ2-acetato-bis(μ2-2-{[2-(6-bromopyridin-2-yl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}-6-methoxyphenolato)tetramanganese(II), [Mn4(C13H11BrN3O2)2(C2H3O2)6], 2, and catena-poly[[μ2-acetato-acetatoaqua(μ2-2-{[2-(6-chloropyridin-2-yl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}-6-methoxyphenolato)dimanganese(II)]-μ2-acetato], [Mn2(C13H11ClN3O2)(C2H3O2)3(H2O)]
n
, 3, have been synthesized using solvothermal methods. Complexes 1–3 were characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are tetranuclear manganese clusters, while complex 3 has a one-dimensional network based on tetranuclear Mn4(L
1)2(CH3COO)6(H2O)2 building units (L
1 is 2-{[2-(6-chloropyridin-2-yl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}-6-methoxyphenolate). Magnetic studies reveal that complexes 1–3 display dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between MnII ions through μ2-O bridges. In addition, 1–3 also display favourable electrochemiluminescence (ECL) properties.

Abstract
Predictive and mechanistically driven access to polynuclear oxo clusters and related materials remains a grand challenge of inorganic chemistry. We here introduce a novel strategy for synthetic control over highly sought-after transition metal {M4O4} cubanes. They attract interest as molecular water oxidation catalysts that combine features of both heterogeneous oxide catalysts and nature's cuboidal {CaMn4O5} center of photosystem II. For the first time, we demonstrate the outstanding structure-directing effect of straightforward inorganic counteranions in solution on the self-assembly of oxo clusters. We introduce a selective counteranion toolbox for the controlled assembly of di(2-pyridyl) ketone (dpk) with M(OAc)2 (M = Co, Ni) precursors into different cubane types. Perchlorate anions provide selective access to type 2 cubanes with the characteristic {H2O-M2(OR)2-OH2} edge-site, such as [Co4(dpy-C{OH}O)4(OAc)2(H2O)2](ClO4)2. Type 1 cubanes with separated polar faces [Co4(dpy-C{OH}O)4(L2)4] n+ (L2 = OAc, Cl, or OAc and H2O) can be tuned with a wide range of other counteranions. The combination of these counteranion sets with Ni(OAc)2 as precursor selectively produces type 2 Co/Ni-mixed or {Ni4O4} cubanes. Systematic mechanistic experiments in combination with computational studies provide strong evidence for type 2 cubane formation through reaction of the key dimeric building block [M2(dpy-C{OH}O)2(H2O)4]2+ with monomers, such as [Co(dpy-C{OH}O)(OAc)(H2O)3]. Furthermore, both experiments and DFT calculations support an energetically favorable type 1 cubane formation pathway via direct head-to-head combination of two [Co2(dpy-C{OH}O)2(OAc)2(H2O)2] dimers. Finally, the visible-light-driven water oxidation activity of type 1 and 2 cubanes with tuned ligand environments was assessed. We pave the way to efficient design concepts in coordination chemistry through ionic control over cluster assembly pathways. Our comprehensive strategy demonstrates how retrosynthetic analyses can be implemented with readily available assembly directing counteranions to provide rapid access to tuned molecular materials.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry of Co(ii) with the chelating dicarboxylate ligand esp (esp = α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-1,3-benzenedipropionate) is explored. We report here the bimetallic paddlewheel-type dimer, Co2(esp)2(EtOH)2 (1), and a bowl-shaped, heptanuclear coordination cluster, Co7(OH)4(Hesp)2(esp)4(MeCN)2·4MeCN (2). Crystal structures of both complexes are reported as well as their magnetic properties, which indicate antiferromagnetic interactions among the Co(ii) ions.

Abstract
To develop high-nuclearity clusters as multi-functional materials, we prepared a new type of sandwich clusters using an anion-templated synthetic strategy. The reactions of (2R,3R)-2,3-dihydroxybutanedioylbis(salicylidene hydrazone) (H6L) with [Cu2(OAc)4(H2O)2] in the presence of alkali metal halide (NaCl, NaBr, KCl or KBr) provided four high-nuclearity clusters [MCu18L6X(C5H5N)15(DMF)3]·3DMF·6H2O (M = Na and X = Cl (1); M = Na and X = Br (2); M = K and X = Cl (3); and M = K and X = Br (4)). They represent a new type of nanoscale high-nuclearity heterometallic sandwich clusters, in which the halide anion is fully sandwiched by two planar nonanuclear clusters, and the alkali metal ion is half-sandwiched on the top of the upper planar nonanuclear cluster. The experimental magnetic data and simulating results reveal dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between metal ions in these compounds. Their dielectric constants and electric hysteresis loops were also measured.
