Adsorption behavior and mechanism of heavy metals onto microplastics: A meta-analysis assisted by machine learning

Microplastics (MPs) have the potential to adsorb heavy metals (HMs), resulting in a combined pollution threat in aquatic and terrestrial environments. However, due to the complexity of MP/HM properties and experimental conditions, research on the adsorption of HMs onto MPs often yields inconsistent findings. To address this issue, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis assisted with machine learning by analyzing a dataset comprising 3340 records from 134 references. The results indicated that polyamide (PA) (ES = -1.26) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for commonly studied HMs (such as Pb, Cd, Cu, and Cr), which can be primarily attributed to the presence of C=O and N-H groups. In contrast, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) demonstrated a lower adsorption capacity, but the strongest adsorption strength resulting from the halogen atom on its surface. In terms of HMs, metal cations were more readily adsorbed by MPs compared with metalloids and metal oxyanions, with Pb (ES = -0.78) exhibiting the most significant adsorption. As the pH and temperature increased, the adsorption of HMs initially increased and subsequently decreased. Using a random forest model, we accurately predicted the adsorption capacity of MPs based on MP/HM properties and experimental conditions. The main factors affecting HM adsorption onto MPs were HM and MP concentrations, specific surface area of MP, and pH. Additionally, surface complexation and electrostatic interaction were the predominant mechanisms in the adsorption of Pb and Cd, with surface functional groups being the primary factors affecting the mechanism of MPs. These findings provide a quantitative summary of the interactions between MPs and HMs, contributing to our understanding of the environmental behavior and ecological risks associated with their correlation.

Highly Efficient Capture of Heavy Metal Ions on Amine-Functionalized Porous Polymer Gels

Porous polymer gels (PPGs) are characterized by inherent porosity, a predictable structure, and tunable functionality, which makes them promising for the heavy metal ion trap in environmental remediation. However, their real-world application is obstructed by the balance between performance and economy in material preparation. Development of an efficient and cost-effective approach to produce PPGs with task-specific functionality remains a significant challenge. Here, a two-step strategy to fabricate amine-enriched PPGs, NUT-21-TETA (NUT means Nanjing Tech University, TETA indicates triethylenetetramine), is reported for the first time. The NUT-21-TETA was synthesized through a simple nucleophilic substitution using two readily available and low-cost monomers, mesitylene and α, α′-dichloro-p-xylene, followed by the successful post-synthetic amine functionalization. The obtained NUT-21-TETA demonstrates an extremely high Pb2+ capacity from aqueous solution. The maximum Pb2+ capacity, qm, assessed by the Langmuir model was as high as 1211 mg/g, which is much higher than most benchmark adsorbents including ZIF-8 (1120 mg/g), FGO (842 mg/g), 732-CR resin (397 mg/g), Zeolite 13X (541 mg/g), and AC (58 mg/g). The NUT-21-TETA can be regenerated easily and recycled five times without a noticeable decrease of adsorption capacity. The excellent Pb2+ uptake and perfect reusability, in combination with a low synthesis cost, gives the NUT-21-TETA a strong potential for heavy metal ion removal.

Radiation fabrication of hybrid activated carbon and functionalized terpolymer hydrogel for sorption of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions

In this work, a hybrid composite of activated carbon (AC) functionalized with terpolymer hydrogel of polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylamide/polyacrylic acid (PVA/PAAm/PAA) was prepared by γ-irradiation and used efficiently for sorption of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions from aquatic solutions. Sewage sludge from the wastewater treatment plant was used to prepare AC, then activated by zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and thermal treatment at 550 °C. The modification of AC by functionalized terpolymer has successfully occurred mainly to limit its precipitation and to increase its adsorption capacity which allowed capable interaction with the metal ions. Different advanced techniques were used to investigate the structure and properties of (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite before and after the sorption process. Using 20 kGy is sufficient to get gel fraction of 87.5% and equilibrium swelling was 39.1 g/g. The (PVA/PAm/PAA)/AC composite hydrogel showed a pHpzc at pH ∼3. FTIR and EDS confirmed the successful integration of the functional groups and constituent elements of AC into terpolymer hydrogel components. XRD results confirmed the typical diffraction peaks of AC in the composite and the calculated average crystallite size was 167.4 nm. The SEM morphology of AC appeared as grains distributed well into the composite. The effect of synthesized AC, PVA/PAAm/PAA and (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC sorbents were tested to uptake of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions. The highest uptake was noticed for (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite and it was selected for studying the parameters affecting the sorption process such as pH, shaking time, initial concentration, and adsorbent dosage. Results of the experimental data showed that Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second-order kinetic models fit well the sorption process of both Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions with maximum sorption capacities of 173.24 and 160.41 mg/g and uptake percentage of 82.3% and 83.4%, respectively at the optimum conditions of pH 4, 180 min, 100 mg/L metal concentration and 0.01 g adsorbent mass. The thermodynamic parameters indicated endothermic and spontaneous nature of the sorption process. Additionally, the as-prepared composite afford high selectivity and uptake capacity for Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions at pH 4 even in the presence of competing cations; Cd(II), Co(II), Sr(II) and Cs(I). The (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite was used efficiently as a unique and selective adsorbent for the sorption of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions.

Stepwise flotation separation of WEEE plastics by polymeric aluminum chloride towards source control of microplastics

The mismanagement of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) resulted in numerous discarded plastics in the natural environment, and these waste plastics might experience aging, breaking, and migration, which becomes a crucial microplastic source. Sustainable management of WEEE plastics presents a considerable opportunity for resource recovery and microplastic pollution prevention. Flotation separation is a significant process of mechanical recycling, while most flotation methods can only deal with binary plastic mixtures. In this work, an advanced, stepwise, and sustainable flotation method was advocated to separate multi-plastics by polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) modification. The abundant hydrophilic groups and environmental friendliness of PAC prompted us to further investigate the wetting effect. PAC had varied hydrophilization effects on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polystyrene (PS) surfaces, but polyethylene terephthalate (PET) retained hydrophobicity. Treatment conditions, including PAC dosage, temperature, time, and pH were optimized. 100% of PET could be purified after primary separation, and the purities of ABS and PS could reach 100% and 97.4% after secondary separation, respectively. The strength of the interaction was determined by the different surface potentials and functional groups. In PAC solution, long-chain molecules or ions might interact with plastic surfaces electrostatically, and Al³⁺ could bridge long-chain molecules and plastic surfaces, thereby strengthening the polymer hydrophilicity. We further improved the PAC treatment process, and the reuse of PAC reduced modifier usage to 84.4 g/ton waste plastics, which was cost-effective in industrial applications. A preliminary evaluation of the energy consumption and environmental impact indicated that PAC treatment was superior to other modification methods. This work is an initial attempt at the stepwise separation of waste plastic and shows promising prospects for recycling plastic waste.

Coal Fly Ash Decorated with Graphene Oxide-Tungsten Oxide Nanocomposite for Rapid Removal of Pb2+ Ions and Reuse of Spent Adsorbent for Photocatalytic Degradation of Acetaminophen

Coal fly ash was decorated with a graphene oxide-tungsten oxide nanorods nanocomposite (CFA/GO/WO3NRs nanocomposite) via a hydrothermal method and applied for the remediation of lead (Pb2+ ions). The Pb2+ ion-loaded spent adsorbent (CFA/GO/WO3NRs + Pb2+ nanocomposite) was reused for the photodegradation of acetaminophen. CFA/GO/WO3NRs + Pb2+ nanocomposite displayed rapid removal of Pb2+ ions. Pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model described the adsorption data. The adsorption capacity of the CFA/GO/WO3NRs nanocomposite was 41.51 mg/g for the removal of Pb2+ ions. Additionally, the Pb2+ ion-loaded spent adsorbent significantly influenced the degradation of acetaminophen by photocatalysis where 93% degradation was observed. It is worthy to note the reuse application of Pb2+ ion-loaded spent adsorbent as a photocatalyst, which will significantly reduce the secondary waste obtained from conventional adsorption methods.

Hooped Amino-Group Chains in Porous Organic Polymers for Enhancing Heavy Metal Ion Removal

By adjusting the stretch state of a triethylenetetramine (TETA) chain in an amine-functionalized porous organic polymer (POP), two adsorbents were designed to study the rational microenvironment for heavy metal ion removal. The quantum calculation elucidated that the hooped amino chains in FC-POP-CH₂TETA-H exhibited stronger interactions with Pb(II) than the extended one in FC-POP-CH₂TETA-E, not only through metal-ligand chelation but also metal coordination. The high binding energy of -2624 kJ mol^-1 as well as the constructed microenvironment by the hooped amino chains ensured an extremely high Pb(II) capacity of 1134 mg g^-1 on FC-POP-CH₂TETA-H. Meanwhile, no more than 5 min to approach adsorption equilibrium revealed its ultrafast adsorption rate. It also showed excellent broad removal capability for multiple metal ions and nonsensitivity to pH. Therefore, by controlling the microenvironmental structures with suitable porosity, functional group stretching states, and coordination modes, the removal efficiency of heavy metal ions would be significantly enhanced, which further provided a promising strategy for designing a rational microenvironment to improve the task-specific separation properties.

The synthesis of nanofiber membranes from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) waste using electrospinning for use as air filtration media

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) waste has been successfully recycled into nanofiber membranes by an electrospinning method for air filter applications. The ABS precursor solutions were made by dissolving the ABS waste in three different solvents, DMAc, DMF, and THF, with various concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 wt%. The solvent and solution concentrations affected the fiber properties (size and morphology) and membrane properties (wettability, crystallinity, and mechanical). Accordingly, we tested the fabricated membranes using SEM, FTIR, XRD, water contact angle, and tensile strength test measurements. The SEM images depicted three different morphologies, i.e. beads, beaded fibers, and pure fibers. The FTIR spectra showed that the solvents completely evaporated during the electrospinning process. The water contact angle test exhibited the hydrophobic properties of all the membrane samples. The XRD spectra showed the amorphous structures of all the membranes. The tensile strength test showed that the membranes fabricated using DMF and DMAc solvents had the best mechanical properties. Considering the fiber size, wettability, and mechanical properties, the membranes fabricated using DMAc and DMF solvents had the best criteria as air filter media. Filtration tests on the membranes fabricated using DMAc and DMF solvents with various solution concentrations depicted that the beads affected the membrane pressure drop and efficiency. The beads gave more space among the fibers, which facilitated the air flow through the membrane. The beads greatly reduced the pressure drop without an overly reduced membrane filtration efficiency. This led to a high-quality factor of the membranes that demonstrated their applicability as potential air filter media.

Rapid adsorption of lead ions using porous carbon nanofibers

Lead is one of the toxic elements in the environment having non-biodegradable behavior. On the other hand, the high contamination of lead in water is a major alarming threat to the world nowadays. In this study, PAN-based porous carbon nanofibers (p-CNFs) were used to adsorb the lead ions for both batch and continuous method. The synthesis was achieved by electrospinning and thermal treatment. The characterization of p-CNFs was achieved via FE-SEM, EDX, BET and Raman spectra. Furthermore, the adsorption capability for lead ions was examined using ICP-MS. The adsorption parameters such as pH of the solution, the mass of nanofibers, adsorption time and initial concentration of lead ions were optimized. The obtained results fitted well with the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order model. The nanofibers showed high adsorption capability at neutral pH within 1 min. Therefore, the prepared p-CNFs can be recommended for lead ions removal up to its permissible limit in a continuous purification system for drinking water.

Low-cost nanoparticles sorbent from modified rice husk and a copolymer for efficient removal of Pb(II) and crystal violet from water

In this work, preparation of adsorbent nanoparticles based on treated low-value agricultural by-product rice husk (TARH), and poly(methylmethacrylate-co-maleic anhydride), poly(MMA-co-MA), is reported for the removal of Pb(II) ion and Crystal violet dye from water. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, AFM, DLS, BET and Zeta potential. The metal ion adsorption capability was determined for rice husk (RH), TARH, crosslinked poly(MMA-co-MA) (CNR), and CNR@TARH nanoparticles. Different factors affecting the adsorption of Pb(II) such as pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and also temperature were studied to investigate adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics. For the four tested adsorption isotherm models, the equilibrium sorption data for CNR@TARH nanoparticles obeyed the Langmuir isotherm equation with maximum sorption capacity of 93.45 mg g(-1). The kinetic adsorption data fitted best the Lagergren pseudo-second order model. Regeneration of adsorbent was easily performed by adsorption/desorption experiments followed for 4 cycles. Finally, the ability of the nanoparticles to remove Crystal violet dye from aqueous solution was also investigated by varying the initial dye concentration, pH and immersion time and the adsorption mechanism followed the second-order kinetic model.
