Chemical characterization and effect of Ziziphora clinopodioides green-synthesized silver nanoparticles on cytotoxicity, antioxidant, and antidiabetic activities in streptozotocin-induced hepatotoxicity in Wistar diabetic male rats

The present research studied the cytotoxicity, antioxidant, and antidiabetic activities of biogenically synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Ziziphora clinopodioides (Z. clinopodioides) as a green mediator. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) were employed to determine AgNPs. In the in vivo experiment, the model rats were categorized into different groups receiving 50, 100, 200, and 400 μg/kg of AgNPs and diabetic, positive, and normal groups (n = 10) using a random division. A single dose of streptozotocin (STZ) at 60 mg/kg was administered to induce diabetes and hepatotoxicity in rats. The administration of AgNPs was performed via intragastric administration for 25 days. On the final day, the levels of glucose and biochemical enzymes, namely aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), were assessed in the serum. Following tissue processing, liver sections with a thickness of 5 μm were prepared. Later, the total volume of different liver components, such as hepatocytes, sinusoids, portal vein, central vein, hepatic arteries, and bile ducts, was measured. The portal vein and bile duct volumes did not vary significantly in groups treated by AgNPs. However, the volume of the central vein and hepatic arteries exhibited noticeable variations in groups treated by AgNPs. After administration of streptozotocin, the volume of hepatocytes and sinusoids increased significantly. However, treatment with a high dose of AgNPs significantly decreased the volume of hepatocytes and sinusoids. In diabetic rats, administering AgNPs reduced the fasting blood glucose levels compared to the model group. In addition, AgNPs decreased the elevated levels of AST and ALP enzymes in a manner that depended on the dosage of AgNPs used. This research demonstrates the hepatoprotective and antidiabetic properties of AgNPs, suggesting their potential implications as hepatoprotective and antidiabetic supplements to prevent diabetes.

Recent advances in the fluorimetric and colorimetric detection of cobalt ions

Cobalt is an essential metal to maintain several functions in the human body and is present in functional materials for numerous applications. Thus, to monitor these functions, it is necessary to develop suitable probes for the detection of cobalt. Presently, researchers are focused on designing different chemosensors for the qualitative and quantitative detection of the metal ions. Among the numerous methods devised for the identification of cobalt ions, colorimetric and fluorimetric techniques are considered the best choice due to their user-friendly nature, sensitivity, accuracy, linearity and robustness. In these techniques, the interaction of the analyte with the chemosensor leads to structural changes in the molecule, causing the emission and excitation intensities (bathochromic, hyperchromic, hypochromic, and hypsochromic) to change with a change in the concentration of the analyte. In this review, the recent advancements in the fluorimetric and colorimetric detection of cobalt ions are systematically summarized, and it is concluded that the development of chemosensors having distinctive colour changes when interacting with cobalt ions has been targeted for on-site detection. The chemosensors are grouped in various categories and their comparison and the discussion of computational studies will enable readers to have a quick overview and help in designing effective and efficient probes for the detection of cobalt in the field of chemo-sensing.

Their exceptional drug-loading capacity and low toxicity, stemming from excellent stability, biocompatibility, and customizable shapes, make them a promising option for enhancing cancer treatment outcomes and improving diagnostic imaging. Leveraging these attributes, researchers can design more effective and targeted cancer therapeutics. The potential of functionalized gold nanoparticles to advance cancer treatment and diagnostics holds a promising avenue for further exploration and development in the fight against cancer. This review article delves into the finely tuned attributes of functionalized gold nanoparticles, unveiling their potential for application in drug delivery for precise and targeted cancer therapy.

Pyrogallol-based dipodal optical probe as new smart analytical tool for sustainable detection of cobalt in biosystem

The present research focuses on the micro-level detection of cobalt ions in biological and environmental samples using a new probe. The probe is a multifunctional symmetrical dipodal molecule with two pyrogallol binding units attached to the malonate scaffold through a propylene spacer. It was synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, electronic spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The molecule's binding, thermodynamic, and photophysical properties are also described. The designed probe demonstrates an excellent sensing ability for Co(II) based on the ESIPT "OFF-ON" fluorescence mechanism. The experiments explore the high selectivity of the ligand for cobalt sensing over a wide range of metal ions of biological and environmental importance. The fluorescence intensity shows a linear response to Co(II) in 5-100 μM concentration with a detection limit of 8.75 x 10-5 and a 2.65-fold enhancement in the intensity. These results establish its potential application as a fluorescence sensor. The probe is also employed as a colorimetric sensor for the qualitative determination of cobalt ions in DMSO solution. The interesting behavior of the probe motivated us further to study its coordination properties with divalent cobalt in solution. The pre-organized assembly with an appropriate cavity size favors the ligand for an efficient Co(II) encapsulation by coordinating through imine-Ns and aromatic ring-Os donors, giving high formation constants.

Progress of Metal Nanomaterial Controllable Preparation by Photoreduction

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in biomedicine, catalysis, environment, electronics, and other fields, which is closely related to its structural form. For this purpose, researchers have been looking for a simple, green, and controllable way to mass produce metal nanomaterials with desired characteristics (shape, size, stability, etc.). Due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of metal nanoparticles, photoreduction method can control the morphology of metal nanoparticles well, which is also simple, large-scalable, and energy-saving. This review provides an overview of the photoreduction method for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and discusses the factors such as the light source, pH value, reagents, and temperature on the morphology of the nanoparticles. Finally, the challenges and development trends in the controlled preparation of nanomaterials are proposed.

Electrochemical sensing platform with gold nanoparticles capped by PDDA for benzyl alcohol determination

An electrochemical sensor has been developed, by modifying screen-printed carbon devices (SPCE) with photochemically synthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNP), to determine benzyl alcohol, a preservative widely used in the cosmetic industry. To obtain the AuNP with the best properties for electrochemical sensing applications, the photochemical synthesis was optimized using chemometric tools. A response surface methodology based on central composite design was used to optimize the synthesis conditions, as irradiation time, and the concentrations of metal precursor and the capping/reducing agent (poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride, PDDA). The anodic current of benzyl alcohol on SPCE modified with the AuNP was used as response of the system. The best electrochemical responses were obtained using the AuNP generated by irradiating for 18 min a 7.20 [Formula: see text] 10^-4 mol L^-1 AuCl₄^--1.7% PDDA solution. The AuNP were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry and dynamic light scattering. The nanocomposite-based sensor formed by the optimal AuNP (AuNP@PDDA/SPCE) was used to determine benzyl alcohol by linear sweep voltammetry in 0.10 mol L^-1 KOH. The anodic current at + 0.017 ± 0.003 V (vs. AgCl) was used as analytical signal. Detection limit obtained under these conditions was 2.8 µg mL^-1. The AuNP@PDDA/SPCE was applied to determine benzyl alcohol  in cosmetic samples.

Extending Ag Nanoparticles as Colorimetric Sensor to Industrial Zinc Electrolyte for Cobalt Ion Detection

The direct and rapid determination of trace cobalt ion (Co²⁺) in the electrolyte of zinc smelting plants is urgently needed but is impeded by the severe interference of extremely high-concentration zinc ions in the solution. Herein, colorimetric detection of Co²⁺ by the polyvinylpyrrolidone functionalized silver nanoparticles (PVP-AgNPs) is realized in solutions with the Zn/Co ratio being high, up to (0.8-5) × 10⁴, which is located within the ratio range in industrial solution. The high concentration of Zn²⁺ induces a strong attenuation of Co²⁺-related signals in ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) extinction spectra; nevertheless, a good linear range for detecting 1-6 mg/L Co²⁺ in 50 g/L Zn²⁺ solution is still acquired. The strong anti-interference toward other metal ions and the mechanism understanding for trace Co²⁺ detection in such a high-concentration Zn²⁺ solution are also revealed by systematic analysis techniques. The results extend the AgNPs as colorimetric sensors to industrial solutions, providing a new strategy for detecting trace-metal ions in industrial plants.

Monodisperse Gold Nanoparticles: A Review on Synthesis and Their Application in Modern Medicine

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are becoming increasingly popular as drug carriers due to their unique properties such as size tenability, multivalency, low toxicity and biocompatibility. AuNPs have physical features that distinguish them from bulk materials, small molecules and other nanoscale particles. Their unique combination of characteristics is just now being fully realized in various biomedical applications. In this review, we focus on the research accomplishments and new opportunities in this field, and we describe the rising developments in the use of monodisperse AuNPs for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. This study addresses the key principles and the most recent published data, focusing on monodisperse AuNP synthesis, surface modifications, and future theranostic applications. Moving forward, we also consider the possible development of functionalized monodisperse AuNPs for theranostic applications based on these efforts. We anticipate that as research advances, flexible AuNPs will become a crucial platform for medical applications.

Gold nanoparticle-based optical nanosensors for food and health safety monitoring: recent advances and future perspectives

Modern society has been facing serious health-related problems including food safety, diseases and illness. Hence, it is urgent to develop analysis methods for the detection and control of food contaminants, disease biomarkers and pathogens. As the traditional instrumental methods have several disadvantages, including being time consuming, and having high cost and laborious procedures, optical nanosensors have emerged as promising alternative or complementary approaches to those traditional ones. With the advantages of simple preparation, high surface-to-volume ratio, excellent biocompatibility, and especially, unique optical properties, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been demonstrated as excellent transducers for optical sensing systems. Herein, we provide an overview of the synthesis of AuNPs and their excellent optical properties that are ideal for the development of optical nanosensors based on local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), colorimetry, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) phenomena. We also review the sensing strategies and their mechanisms, as well as summarizing the recent advances in the monitoring of food contaminants, disease biomarkers and pathogens using developed AuNP-based optical nanosensors in the past seven years (2015-now). Furthermore, trends and challenges in the application of these nanosensors in the determination of those analytes are discussed to suggest possible directions for future developments.

A review on detection of heavy metals from aqueous media using nanomaterial-based sensors

The extensive release of heavy metals into the natural water bodies has become globally prevalent from past few decades. Heavy metal toxicity is becoming a serious threat to human and the environment. Due to their prolonged half-life, potential accumulation in different parts of body, and non-biodegradability, metal ions are being obvious entities that can cause several hazardous health risks. A number of methods have been developed for the detection of heavy/toxic metals based on sensors. Among the various new technologies, chemical and optical nano sensors are emerging technology to detect toxic heavy metals. Several nano sensors have been developed using nano materials, synthesized from green or chemical methods. The nano sensors are convenient to prepare and provide enhanced limit of detection, limit of quantification, and onsite detection. This review covers the recent work reported from 2013 to 2019 for the detection of heavy metals using sensors based on nano materials synthesized by different routes. Graphical abstract.

Biosynthesis and Cytotoxic Properties of Ag, Au, and Bimetallic Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Lithospermum erythrorhizon Callus Culture Extract

The present study reports a green chemistry approach for the rapid and easy biological synthesis of silver (Ag), gold (Au), and bimetallic Ag/Au nanoparticles using the callus extract of Lithospermum erythrorhizon as a reducing and capping agent. The biosynthesized nanoparticles were characterized with ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Our results showed the formation of crystalline metal nanostructures of both spherical and non-spherical shape. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy showed the characteristic peaks in the silver and gold regions, confirming the presence of the corresponding elements in the monometallic particles and both elements in the bimetallic particles. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy affirmed the role of polysaccharides and polyphenols of the L. erythrorhizon extract as the major reducing and capping agents for metal ions. In addition, our results showed that the polysaccharide sample and the fraction containing secondary metabolites isolated from L. erythrorhizon were both able to produce large amounts of metallic nanoparticles. The biosynthesized nanoparticles demonstrated cytotoxicity against mouse neuroblastoma and embryonic fibroblast cells, which was considerably higher for Ag nanoparticles and for bimetallic Ag/Au nanoparticles containing a higher molar ratio of silver. However, fibroblast migration was not significantly affected by any of the nanoparticles tested. The obtained results provide a new example of the safe biological production of metallic nanoparticles, but further study is required to uncover the mechanism of their toxicity so that the biomedical potency can be assessed.

Photochemical Synthesis of Gold and Silver Nanoparticles-A Review

Nanomaterials have supported important technological advances due to their unique properties and their applicability in various fields, such as biomedicine, catalysis, environment, energy, and electronics. This has triggered a tremendous increase in their demand. In turn, materials scientists have sought facile methods to produce nanomaterials of desired features, i.e., morphology, composition, colloidal stability, and surface chemistry, as these determine the targeted application. The advent of photoprocesses has enabled the easy, fast, scalable, and cost- and energy-effective production of metallic nanoparticles of controlled properties without the use of harmful reagents or sophisticated equipment. Herein, we overview the synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles via photochemical routes. We extensively discuss the effect of varying the experimental parameters, such as the pH, exposure time, and source of irradiation, the use or not of reductants and surfactants, reagents' nature and concentration, on the outcomes of these noble nanoparticles, namely, their size, shape, and colloidal stability. The hypothetical mechanisms that govern these green processes are discussed whenever available. Finally, we mention their applications and insights for future developments.

Gold Nanoparticles for Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Gold is a multifunctional material that has been utilized in medicinal applications for centuries because it has been recognized for its bacteriostatic, anticorrosive, and antioxidative properties. Modern medicine makes routine, conventional use of gold and has even developed more advanced applications by taking advantage of its ability to be manufactured at the nanoscale and functionalized because of the presence of thiol and amine groups, allowing for the conjugation of various functional groups such as targeted antibodies or drug products. It has been shown that colloidal gold exhibits localized plasmon surface resonance (LPSR), meaning that gold nanoparticles can absorb light at specific wavelengths, resulting in photoacoustic and photothermal properties, making them potentially useful for hyperthermic cancer treatments and medical imaging applications. Modifying gold nanoparticle shape and size can change their LPSR photochemical activities, thereby also altering their photothermal and photoacoustic properties, allowing for the utilization of different wavelengths of light, such as light in the near-infrared spectrum. By manufacturing gold in a nanoscale format, it is possible to passively distribute the material through the body, where it can localize in tumors (which are characterized by leaky blood vessels) and be safely excreted through the urinary system. In this paper, we give a quick review of the structure, applications, recent advancements, and potential future directions for the utilization of gold nanoparticles in cancer therapeutics.

Selective Interactions of Al(III) with Plasmonic AgNPs by Colorimetric, Kinetic, and Thermodynamic Studies

In this paper, we report a simple, novel, and highly selective plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs)-based colorimetric nanoprobe for the detection of Al(III) ions in aqueous solution. 5-Hydroxy indole-2-carboxylic acid (5H-I2CA) was utilized as a reducing as well as capping agent for the preparation of silver nanoparticles (5H-I2CA@AgNPs). The interaction between Al(III) and AgNPs was determined by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering techniques. The absorption values (A 452-410) of the 5H-I2CA@AgNPs solution exhibited a linear correlation with Al(III) ion concentrations within the linear range of 0.1-50 nM. An outstanding selectivity toward Al(III) was demonstrated by the proposed nanoprobe in the presence of interfering cations. Kinetics was used to study the selectivity of nanoprobe, which indicated second-order kinetics, and the rate constant was very high. The activation energies of Al(III) were found to be the lowest compared to those of other interfering ions. The results of kinetics and thermodynamic study of Al(III) were compared to those of four other competing ions. The thermodynamic data reveal that the interaction best suited for Al(III) ion compared to other metal ions (Al(III) > Co(II) > Hg(II) > Cr(III) ≅ Cr(VI)). The lower detection limit of the proposed nanoprobe for Al(III) is 1 nM. The present method also holds practical applicability for real water samples.

Energy/Electron Transfer Switch for Controlling Optical Properties of Silicon Quantum Dots

The superior optical properties of Silicon Quantum Dots (SQDs) have made them of increasing interest for a variety of biological and opto-electronic applications. The surface functionalization of the SQDs with aromatic ligands plays a key role in controlling their optical properties due to the interaction of the ligands with the electronic wave function of SQDs. However, there is limited reports in literature describing the impact of spacer groups connecting the aromatic chromophore to SQDs on the optical properties of the SQDs. Herein, we report the synthesis of two SQDs assemblies (1.6 nm average diameter) functionalized with perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide (PDI) chromophore through N-propylurea and propylamine spacers. Depending on the nature of the spacer, the photophysical measurements provide clear evidence for efficient energy and/or electron transfer between the SQDs and PDI. Energy transfer was confirmed to be the operative process when propylurea spacer was used, in which the rate was estimated to be ~2 × 109 s-1. On the other hand, the propylamine spacer was found to facilitate electron transfer process within the SQDs assembly. To illustrate functionality, the water soluble SQD-N-propylurea-PDI assembly was proven to be nontoxic and efficient for fluorescent imaging of embryonic kidney HEK293 cells and human bone cancerous U2OS cells.

Synthesis of gold nanomaterials and their cancer-related biomedical applications: an update

Recently, the advances in the synthesis of new types of nanomaterials have created several opportunities in drug delivery and targeted therapy applications. Among the various nanostructures, gold nanostructures with controllable physical and chemical properties have received attention for various biomedical uses, including sensing of biomolecules, in vitro and in vivo bioimaging (as advanced contrast agents for photothermal and bioimaging techniques), photothermolysis of cancer cells, and targeted drug delivery. The attractive properties of gold nanomaterials, particularly, anti-angiogenic properties, are highly useful in a variety of cancers studies. In addition, they can bind many proteins and drugs and can be actively targeted to cancer cells over-expressing cell surface receptors and they are biocompatible in nature with a high atomic number, which directs to greater absorption of kilovoltage X-rays and provides greater contrast than standard agents. In this review, we have summarized the synthesis, structure and functionalization of gold nanostructures, and their biomedical applications with special reference to cancer studies.

Reduction of Eu3+ due to a change of the topological structure of the BO3 unit in borate glass
