Advances in Carbon Xerogels: Structural Optimization for Enhanced EDLC Performance

This review explores the recent progress on carbon xerogels (CXs) and highlights their development and use as efficient electrodes in organic electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). In addition, this work examines how the adjustment of synthesis parameters, such as pH, polymerization duration, and the reactant-to-catalyst ratio, crucially affects the structure and electrochemical properties of xerogels. The adaptability of xerogels in terms of modification of their porosity and structure plays a vital role in the improvement of EDLC applications as it directly influences the interaction between electrolyte ions and the electrode surface, which is a key factor in determining EDLC performance. The review further discusses the substantial effects of chemical activation with KOH on the improvement of the porous structure and specific surface area, which leads to notable electrochemical enhancements. This structural control facilitates improvement in ion transport and storage, which are essential for efficient EDLC charge-discharge (C-D) cycles. Compared with commercial activated carbons for EDLC electrodes, CXs attract interest for their superior surface area, lower electrical resistance, and stable performance across diverse C-D rates, which underscore their promising potential in EDLC applications. This in-depth review not only summarizes the advancements in CX research but also highlights their potential to expand and improve EDLC applications and demonstrate the critical role of their tunable porosity and structure in the evolution of next-generation energy storage systems.

Improved L-Asparaginase Properties and Reusability by Immobilization onto Functionalized Carbon Xerogels

Enzyme immobilization can offer a range of significant advantages, including reusability, and increased selectivity, stability, and activity. In this work, a central composite design (CCD) of experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) were used to study, for the first time, the L-asparaginase (ASNase) immobilization onto functionalized carbon xerogels (CXs). The best results were achieved using CXs obtained by hydrothermal oxidation with nitric acid and subsequent heat treatment in a nitrogen flow at 600 °C (CX-OX-600). Under the optimal conditions (81 min of contact time, pH 6.2 and 0.36 g/L of ASNase), an immobilization yield (IY) of 100 % and relative recovered activity (RRA) of 103 % were achieved. The kinetic parameters obtained also indicate a 1.25-fold increase in the affinity of ASNase towards the substrate after immobilization. Moreover, the immobilized enzyme retained 97 % of its initial activity after 6 consecutive reaction cycles. All these outcomes confirm the promising properties of functionalized CXs as support for ASNase, bringing new insights into the development of an efficient and stable immobilization platform for use in the pharmaceutical industry, food industry, and biosensors.

Topological Insulator Bi2 Se3 -Assisted Heterostructure for Ultrafast Charging Sodium-Ion Batteries

The development of fast charging materials offers a viable solution for large-scale and sustainable energy storage needs. However, it remains a critical challenge to improve the electrical and ionic conductivity for better performance. Topological insulator (TI), a topological quantum material that has attracted worldwide attention, hosts unusual metallic surface states and consequent high carrier mobility. Nevertheless, its potential in promising high-rate charging capability has not been fully realized and explored. Herein, a novel Bi2 Se3 -ZnSe heterostructure as excellent fast charging material for Na+ storage is reported. Ultrathin Bi2 Se3 nanoplates with rich TI metallic surfaces are introduced as an electronic platform inside the material, which greatly reduces the charge transfer resistance and improves the overall electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, the abundant crystalline interfaces between these two selenides promote Na+ migration and provide additional active sites as well. As expected, the composite delivers the excellent high-rate performance of 360.5 mAh g-1 at 20 A g-1 and maintains its electrochemical stability of 318.4 mAh g-1 after 3000 long cycles, which is the record high for all reported selenide-based anodes. This work is anticipated to provide alternative strategies for further exploration of topological insulators and advanced heterostructures.

Immobilization and Characterization of L-Asparaginase over Carbon Xerogels

L-asparaginase (ASNase) is an aminohydrolase currently used in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Enzyme immobilization is an exciting option for both applications, allowing for a more straightforward recovery and increased stability. High surface area and customizable porosity make carbon xerogels (CXs) promising materials for ASNase immobilization. This work describes the influence of contact time, pH, and ASNase concentration on the immobilization yield (IY) and relative recovered activity (RRA) using the Central Composite Design methodology. The most promising results were obtained using CX with an average pore size of 4 nm (CX-4), reaching IY and RRA of 100%. At the optimal conditions (contact time 49 min, pH 6.73, and [ASNase] 0.26 mg·mL⁻¹), the ASNase-CXs biocomposite was characterized and evaluated in terms of kinetic properties and operational, thermal, and pH stabilities. The immobilized ASNase onto CX-4 retained 71% of its original activity after six continuous reaction cycles, showed good thermal stability at 37 °C (RRA of 91% after 90 min), and was able to adapt to both acidic and alkaline environments. Finally, the results indicated a 3.9-fold increase in the immobilized ASNase affinity for the substrate, confirming the potential of CXs as a support for ASNase and as a cost-effective tool for subsequent use in the therapeutic and food sectors.

Influence of Resorcinol to Sodium Carbonate Ratio on Carbon Xerogel Properties for Aluminium Ion Battery

Carbon xerogels were synthesized using a soft-template route with resorcinol as the carbon source and sodium carbonate as the catalyst. The influence of the resorcinol to catalyst ratio in the range of 500–20,000 on pore structure, graphitic domains, and electronic conductivity of as-prepared carbon xerogels, as well as their performance in an aluminium ion battery (AIB), was investigated. After carbonization steps of the polymers up to 800 °C, all carbon samples exhibited similar specific volumes of micropores (0.7–0.8 cm³ g⁻¹), while samples obtained from mixtures with R/C ratios lower than 2000 led to carbon xerogels with significantly higher mesopore diameters up to 6 nm. The best results, in terms of specific surface (1000 m² g⁻¹), average pore size (6 nm) and reversible capacity in AIB cell (28 mAh g⁻¹ @ 0.1 A g⁻¹), were obtained with a carbon xerogel sample synthetized at a resorcinol to catalyst ratio of R/C = 500 (CXG₅₀₀). Though cyclic voltammograms of carbon xerogel samples did not exhibit any sharp peaks in the applied potential window, the presence of both oxidation and a quite wide reduction peak in CXG_500–2000 cyclic voltammograms indicated pseudocapacitance behaviour induced by diffusion-controlled intercalation/de-intercalation of AlCl₄⁻ ions into/from the carbon xerogel matrix. This was confirmed by shifting of the (002) peak towards lower 2θ angle values in the XRD pattern of the CXG₅₀₀ electrode after the charging step in AIB, whereas the contribution of pseudocapacitance, calculated from half-cell measurements, was limited to only 6% of overall capacitance.

Fabrication of High Surface Area Microporous ZnO from ZnO/Carbon Sacrificial Composite Monolith Template

Fabrication of porous materials from the standard sacrificial template method allows metal oxide nanostructures to be produced and have several applications in energy, filtration and constructing sensing devices. However, the low surface area of these nanostructures is a significant drawback for most applications. Here, we report the synthesis of ZnO/carbon composite monoliths in which carbon is used as a sacrificial template to produce zinc oxide (ZnO) porous nanostructures with a high specific surface area. The synthesized porous oxides of ZnO with a specific surface area of 78 m²/g are at least one order of magnitude higher than that of the ZnO nanotubes reported in the literature. The crucial point to achieving this remarkable result was the usage of a novel ZnO/carbon template where the carbon template was removed by simple heating in the air. As a high surface area porous nanostructured ZnO, these synthesized materials can be useful in various applications including catalysis, photocatalysis, separation, sensing, solar energy harvest and Zn-ion battery and as supercapacitors for energy storage.

Effect of Process Conditions on the Properties of Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Aerogel Microparticles Produced via Emulsion-Gelation Method

Organic aerogels in the form of powder, microgranules and microsized particles receive considerable attention due to their easy fabrication, low process time and costs compared to their monolithic form. Here, we developed resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) aerogel microparticles by using an emulsion-gelation method. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of curing time, stirring rate, RF sol:oil ratio and initial pH of the sol in order to control the size and properties of the microparticles produced. The emulsion-gelation of RF sol prepared with sodium carbonate catalyst in an oil phase at 60 °C was explored. RF microparticles were washed with ethanol to remove the oil phase followed by supercritical and ambient pressure drying. The properties of the dried RF microparticles were analyzed using FT-IR, N₂ adsorption isotherm, gas pycnometry, wide angle X-ray scattering and scanning electron microscope. RF microparticles with high surface area up to 543 m²/g and large pore volume of 1.75 cm³/g with particle sizes ranging from 50–425 µm were obtained.

A Stable and Indurative Superhydrophobic Film with Excellent Anti-Bioadhesive Performance for 6061 Al Protection

Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted intensive attention in the antifouling field because of their excellent anti-bioadhesive performance and environmental friendliness. However, promising surfaces have met great challenges of poor mechanical robustness under harsh serving conditions. Herein, an organic-inorganic composite strategy, that the silane-modified TiO2 nanoparticles are compounded into the porous framework provided by the stable and indurative aluminum oxide film, is proposed to address the common serious problem in superhydrophobic surfaces. Different from the traditional superhydrophobic surfaces, this composite film possesses a ~18 μm thick layer which can provide strong support to silane-modified TiO2 nanoparticles. The resulting film can reserve superhydrophobicity to the surface even after a thickness loss of ~15 μm under continuous abrasion. At the same time, the results of the bacterial adhesive tests also verify that the film has the same long-term anti-bioadhesive performance. The film with superhydrophobicity, excellent anti-bioadhesive property, and stable robustness will make it a promising candidate for serving in a harsh environment, and the design concept of this film could be applied to various substrates.

Graphitized Carbon Xerogels for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Carbon xerogels with different macropore sizes and degrees of graphitization were evaluated as electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. It was found that pore structure of the xerogels has a marked effect on the degree of graphitization of the final carbons. Moreover, the incorporation of graphene oxide to the polymeric structure of the carbon xerogels also leads to a change in their carbonaceous structure and to a remarkable increase in the graphitic phase of the samples studied. The sample with the highest degree of graphitization (i.e., hybrid graphene-carbon xerogel) displayed the highest capacity and stability over 100 cycles, with values even higher than those of the commercial graphite SLP50 used as reference.
