Preparation and characterization of P-type zeolite for adsorption of Cr3+, Ni2+, and Co2

Acid-washed coal fly ash (AW-CFA) was subjected to wet grinding activation followed by hydrothermal crystallization to synthesize P zeolite (FAZ-P). The FAZ-P obtained at 120 °C for 24 h exhibited a maximum relative crystallinity of 93.15% and was employed for the adsorption of Cr3+, Ni2+, and Co2+ from aqueous solutions. The zeolitization of coal fly ash (CFA) leads to an increase in specific surface area to 44.00 m2/g, resulting in the formation of nano-sized P zeolite crystals with uniformly narrow fissures and sizes within the range of 10-30 nm. Adsorption experimental results indicate that FAZ-P exhibits maximum adsorption capacities of 49.03 mg/g for Cr3+, 22.20 mg/g for Ni2+, and 27.25 mg/g for Co2+. The adsorption equilibrium data for both mixed and single-metal ion solutions conform to the Langmuir model, with the affinity sequence for heavy metal ions being Cr3+  > Co2+  > Ni2+. The pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models effectively described the adsorption behavior of Cr3+, Ni2+, and Co2+. Increasing the initial pH value of the solution significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for heavy metal ions. The removal mechanism of metal ions involves both adsorption and ion exchange processes. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic.

Experimental and Computational Approaches for the Structural Study of Novel Ca-Rich Zeolites from Incense Stick Ash and Their Application for Wastewater Treatment

At present, chemical Si/Al sources are mainly used as precursor materials for the manufacturing of zeolites. Such precursor materials are quite expensive for commercial synthesis. Here, we have reported the synthesis of Ca-based zeolite from incense stick ash waste by the alkali-treatment method for the first time. Incense stick ash (ISA) was used as a precursor material for the synthesis of low Si zeolites by the alkali-treatment method. The as-synthesized zeolites were characterized by various instruments like particle size analyzer (PSA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), electron diffraction spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). FTIR and XRD helped in the identification of the microstructure and crystalline nature of the zeolites and also confirmed the synthesis of Ca-based zeolite with two thetas at 25.7°. The microscopic analysis by FESEM and TEM exhibited that the size of synthesized Ca-rich zeolites varies from 200 to 700 nm and they are aggregated and cuboidal in shape. Additionally, structural, electronic, and density of states’ characteristics of gismondine (Ca2Al4Si4O16·9H2O) structures were evaluated by computational simulations (first principle, density functional theorem). The structural optimization of structures was carried out in the first stage under the lowest condition of total energy and forces acting on atoms for the lattice constant, as well as the available experimental and theoretical findings. The present research approach predicted the transformation of ISA waste into a value-added mineral, i.e., zeolite, which was further used for the removal of both heavy metals and alkali metals from fly ash-based wastewater using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).

Synthesis of zeolites Na-A and Na-X from tablet compressed and calcinated coal fly ash

Zeolites Na-A and Na-X are important synthetic zeolites widely used for separation and adsorption in industry. It is of great significance to develop energy-efficient routines that can synthesize zeolites Na-A and Na-X from low-cost raw materials. Coal fly ash (CFA) is the major residue from the combustion of coal and biomass containing more than 85% SiO₂ and Al₂O₃, which can readily replace the conventionally used sodium silicate and aluminate for zeolite synthesis. We used Na₂CO₃ to replace the expensive NaOH used for the calcination of CFA and showed that tablet compression can enhance the contact with Na₂CO₃ for the activation of CFA through calcination for the synthesis of zeolites Na-A and Na-X under mild conditions. We optimized the control variables for zeolite synthesis and showed that phase-pure zeolite Na-A can be synthesized with CFA at reactant molar ratio, hydrothermal reaction temperature and reaction time of 1.3Na₂O: 0.6Al₂O₃: 1SiO₂: 38H₂O at 80°C for 6 h, respectively, while phase-pure zeolite Na-X can be synthesized at 2.2Na₂O: 0.2Al₂O₃: 1SiO₂: 88H₂O at 100°C for 8 h, respectively. The composition, morphology, specific surface area, vibration spectrum and thermogravimetry of synthesized Na-A and Na-X were further characterized.
