Effect of the Alkyl Chain Length on Assessment as Thermo-Responsive Draw Solutes for Forward Osmosis

A series of thermo-responsive tetrabutylphosphonium 1-alkanesulfonates (abbreviated as [P₄₄₄₄][C _n S], n = 6, 8, 10, and 12), where n is the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group on the 1-alkanesulfonate anion, were prepared by an ion-exchange reaction to investigate their potential ability toward the application of draw solutes in forward osmosis (FO). We systematically studied the recovery properties and FO performance of [P₄₄₄₄][C _n S]. This series exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST) characteristics, which offer a clear advantage of being energy-efficient for recovering draw solutes; however, [P₄₄₄₄][C₆S] was only observed at 20 wt %. The LCSTs of the 20 wt % [P₄₄₄₄][C₆S], [P₄₄₄₄][C₈S], [P₄₄₄₄][C₁₀S], and [P₄₄₄₄][C₁₂S] draw solutions were approximately 83, 54, 49, and 56 °C, respectively. Moreover, when the orientation of the active layer was heading toward the draw solution (AL-DS mode), the water and reverse solute flux of [P₄₄₄₄][C₁₀S] were about 1.58 LMH and 0.81 gMH, respectively, at 20 wt % aqueous solutions. When the membrane was used in the active layer facing the feed solution (AL-FS) system, the water and reverse solute flux of [P₄₄₄₄][C₁₀S] were approximately 0.71 LMH and 0.38 gMH, respectively, at 20 wt % aqueous solutions. Thus, this study is the first to examine the structural transformations of the bulkier alkyl group on the sulfonate anion moiety and its feasibility as the new draw solute for the FO system.

Ionic Liquids Assisted Topical Drug Delivery for Permeation Enhancement: Formulation Strategies, Biomedical Applications, and Toxicological Perspective

Topical drug delivery provides several benefits over other conventional routes by providing localizing therapeutic effects and also avoids the gastrointestinal tract circumventing the first-pass metabolism and enzymatic drug degradation. Being painless, the topical route also prevents the difficulties linked with the parenteral route. However, there are limitations to the current topical systems which necessitate the need for further research to find functional excipients to overcome these limitations. This review deals in depth with the ionic liquids concerning their physicochemical properties and applicability as well as their role in the arena of topical drug delivery in permeation enhancement, bioavailability enhancement of the drugs by solvation, and drug moiety modification. The review gives a detailed insight into the recent literature on ionic liquid-based topical formulations like ionic liquid-based emulsions, active pharmaceutical ingredient-ionic liquids, ionic liquid-based bacterial cellulose membranes, topical small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery, and ionogels as a possible solutions for overcoming the challenges associated with the topical route. This review also takes into account the toxicological aspects and biomedical applications of ionic liquids.

Hydrophobicity-Dependent Heterogeneous Nanoaggregates and Fluorescence Dynamics in Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids

The hydrophobicity of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) has been shown to have a very significant effect on the optical and structural properties of and in RTILs. The average excited state lifetime of neat RTILs has been shown to be increasing with increasing hydrophobicity of the RTILs. By employing pico-nanosecond-based fluorescence anisotropy decay, the volume of the nanoaggregates in neat RTILs have been calculated. The volume of these nanoaggregates have been shown to be decreasing with increase in hydrophobicity of the RTILs. Thus, hydrophobicity has been shown to have an important role, i.e., hydrophobicity can be used as a handle to tune the properties of RTILs as designer solvents. Moreover, the excited-state lifetime of red-emitting fluorophores, i.e., whose fluorescence emission is not perturbed by the inherent emission of RTILs, has been shown to increase with the increasing hydrophobicity of the RTILs. Highly hydrophobic RTILs have been shown to exhibit positive deviation and highly hydrophilic RTIL has been shown to exhibit negative deviation from the linear correlation between average solvation time (τ_s) versus viscosity/temperature (η/T).

Protic Ionic Liquid Cation Alkyl Chain Length Effect on Lysozyme Structure

Solvents that stabilize protein structures can improve and expand their biochemical applications, particularly with the growing interest in biocatalytic-based processes. Aiming to select novel solvents for protein stabilization, we explored the effect of alkylammonium nitrate protic ionic liquids (PILs)-water mixtures with increasing cation alkyl chain length on lysozyme conformational stability. Four PILs were studied, that is, ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), butylammonium nitrate (BAN), hexylammonium nitrate (HAN), and octylammonium nitrate (OAN). The surface tension, viscosity, and density of PIL-water mixtures at low to high concentrations were firstly determined, which showed that an increasing cation alkyl chain length caused a decrease in the surface tension and density as well as an increase in viscosity for all PIL solutions. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to investigate the liquid nanostructure of the PIL solutions, as well as the overall size, conformational flexibility and changes to lysozyme structure. The concentrated PILs with longer alkyl chain lengths, i.e., over 10 mol% butyl-, 5 mol% hexyl- and 1 mol% octylammonium cations, possessed liquid nanostructures. This detrimentally interfered with solvent subtraction, and the more structured PIL solutions prevented quantitative SAXS analysis of lysozyme structure. The radius of gyration (R_g) of lysozyme in the less structured aqueous PIL solutions showed little change with up to 10 mol% of PIL. Kratky plots, SREFLEX models, and FTIR data showed that the protein conformation was maintained at a low PIL concentration of 1 mol% and lower when compared with the buffer solution. However, 50 mol% EAN and 5 mol% HAN significantly increased the R_g of lysozyme, indicating unfolding and aggregation of lysozyme. The hydrophobic interaction and liquid nanostructure resulting from the increased cation alkyl chain length in HAN likely becomes critical. The impact of HAN and OAN, particularly at high concentrations, on lysozyme structure was further revealed by FTIR. This work highlights the negative effect of a long alkyl chain length and high concentration of PILs on lysozyme structural stability.

An Experimental and Theoretical Test of Dielectric Friction Models Using Rotational Diffusion of 7-Diethylamino-2-H-1-Benzopyran-2-One in Non-associative Solvents

The rotational re-orientations times of the 7-DHB dye molecule have been examined in non-associative solvents (DMSO and Octanenitrile) by varying the temperature, by employing the Steady-State Fluorescence Depolarisation and Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC) techniques. Rotational re-orientations time values in DMSO are found larger by a factor of 1.136 than octanenitrile, which indicates that 7-DHB laser dye is experiencing higher friction in DMSO than octanenitrile. To determine mechanical friction Stokes Einstein's Debye theory (SED) -with a stick, slip boundary conditions parameters are used and found an interesting super slip trend. Point dipole models as Nee-Zwanzig (NZ) and van der Zwan-Hynes (ZH) fail to explain experimental dielectric friction observed trends. Alavi-Waldeck model successfully explains the observed dielectric friction trend in non-associative solvents.

Interfacial properties modulated by the water confinement in reverse micelles created by the ionic liquid-like surfactant bmim-AOT

The behavior of the interfacial water entrapped in reverse micelles (RMs) that were formed by the ionic liquid-like surfactant 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (bmim-AOT) was investigated with the use of UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry. The solvatochromism of two molecular probes, namely, 1-methyl-8-oxyquinolinium betaine (QB) and N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine copper(ii)acetylacetonate tetraphenylborate ([Cu(acac)(tmen)][B(C6H5)4]), was investigated. As a comparison, the analog RMs formed by sodium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (Na-AOT) were also explored. By varying the water content inside the RMs and consequently the different magnitude of the water-surfactant interactions at the interface, interesting properties were observed by comparing bmim-AOT and Na-AOT RMs. From the solvatochromic behavior of ([Cu(acac)(tmen)][B(C6H5)4]), we found that the interface in bmim-AOT RMs shows a smaller electron donating capacity than that in Na-AOT RMs. QB revealed that the interfacial region is a weaker hydrogen bond donor and less polar than the corresponding Na-AOT RMs. NMR experiments showed that the molecular motion of water in bmim-AOT RMs is less restricted than that of the water molecules confined in Na-AOT RMs. In summary, the results show how the nature of the bmim+ cation affects the interaction between the entrapped water and the RM interface, greatly modifying the interfacial water structure in comparison with the results known for Na-AOT.

Differences in the behavior of dicationic and monocationic ionic liquids as revealed by time resolved-fluorescence, NMR and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy

With an aim to understand the behavior in terms of the intermolecular interactions, structure and dynamics of dicationic and monocationic ionic liquids (ILs), two imidazolium-based dicationic ionic liquids (DILs), 1,8-bis-(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)octane bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C₈(mim)₂][NTf₂]₂), 1,9-bis-(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)nonane bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C₉(mim)₂][NTf₂]₂), and one monocationic ionic liquid (MIL), 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C₄(mim)][NTf₂]), have been investigated through combined fluorescence, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), NMR and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). The DILs were synthesized by following a standard synthetic protocol and subsequently characterized by different analytical techniques. Steady state absorption, emission and EPR spectroscopic data reveal that DILs are less polar compared to MIL. The polarities of the DILs and MIL were found to be close to those of acetonitrile and short chain alcohols, respectively. The excitation wavelength dependent emission data reveals that DILs are more micro-heterogeneous in nature than MIL. The rotational diffusion of two organic solutes, perylene and 8-methoxypyrene-1,3,6-sulfonate (MPTS), were examined in the DILs and MIL. The rotational diffusion data for perylene and MPTS were analyzed in light of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) hydrodynamic theory. The rotation of perylene in the DILs was observed to be relatively faster to that in the MIL, and it goes beyond the limit predicted by the SED theory. In order to explain the rotational motion of perylene in DILs, the data was analyzed further by invoking quasi-hydrodynamic theory. The observed rotational behavior of perylene has been explained by considering the fact that perylene is located in the nonpolar region of ILs, and larger solvent molecules (DILs) induce a lower friction to the rotating solute. Interestingly, unlike perylene, rotations of MPTS in both of the ILs were observed to be much hindered indicating a relatively stronger MPTS-IL interaction than perylene-IL interaction. More interestingly, rotation of MPTS was observed to be faster in the DILs than that in the MIL despite the fact that DILs are more viscous than MILs. Relatively faster rotation of MPTS in DILs has been explained by resorting to NMR and FCS studies. The outcomes of the NMR and FCS studies revealed that DILs in the experimental condition exist in their folded form and because of this structural restriction of DILs it becomes difficult for the bulky MPTS to make stronger hydrogen bonding interactions with DILs, which eventually makes the rotation of MPTS in DILs faster. Essentially, the outcomes of all of these studies have demonstrated that the behavior of DILs is quite different to that of the usual MILs.
