Abstract
Herein, the synthesis of branched α,β-unsaturated amides by a hydroaminocarbonylation reaction of alkynes with various amine substrates such as aromatic amines, aliphatic amines, solid amine sources like NH4HCO3, and even strongly basic piperidines is reported, using a Pd(OAc)2/hybrid N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphine-phosphine (CPP) catalytic system. The reactions feature no additives, wide substrate scope, high selectivity (b/l > 99 : 1) and excellent yields. Mechanistic studies have disclosed that the reaction takes place via a palladium hydride pathway. CPP adopts a hybrid bidentate ligand conformation with a carbene-phosphine coordination mode, wherein one phosphorus atom remains externally accessible, potentially serving as a stabilizing auxiliary during catalytic cycles.

Abstract
The cooperation of two distinct catalytic cycles to activate different reactive centers leading to a chemical transformation has been classified as synergistic catalysis. The synergistic combination of NHC with palladium catalysis has emerged as a powerful strategy in the last few years. Merging the ability of NHCs to inverse the polarity of a functional group with the unique reactivity of palladium enables transformations that cannot be accomplished by either of these catalysts alone. Despite the associated challenges, such as quenching of catalysts, reactivity mismatch etc., significant development has been achieved in the field of NHC/Pd synergistic catalysis. The recent incorporation of photoredox catalysis with NHC/Pd synergistic catalysis has further advanced this area. This review highlights the developments made in the area of NHC/Pd synergistic catalysis.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed allylation cyclization reaction has recently emerged as an efficient and powerful synthetic platform for the construction of diverse and valuable carbo- and heterocycles. Thus the development of new allylic motifs for achieving this type of transformations in high reactivity and selectivity is of great importance. Generally, these substrates have been utilized as 1,3-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,6-dipoles in many reactions, which are applied to prepare highly functionalized products with complete control of chemo-, regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity. In this review, we focus our attention on the development of palladium-catalyzed [4 + n] cycloaddition of allylic motifs and describe a comprehensive and impressive advances in this area. Meanwhile, the related mechanism and the application of these annulation strategies in natural product total synthesis will be highlighted in detail.

Abstract
The development of general methods for asymmetric benzylation of prochiral carbon nucleophiles remains a challenge in organic synthesis. The merging of ruthenium catalysis and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis for asymmetric redox benzylation of enals has been achieved, which opens up strategic opportunities for the asymmetric benzylation reactions. A wide range of 3,3'-disubstituted oxindoles with a stereogenic quaternary carbon center widely existing in natural products and biologically interesting molecules is successfully obtained with excellent enantioselectivities [up to 99% enantiomeric excess (ee)]. The generality of this catalytic strategy was further highlighted by its successful application in the late-stage functionalization of oxindole skeletons. Furthermore, the linear correlation between ee values of NHC precatalyst and the product elucidated the independent catalytic cycle of either the NHC catalyst or the ruthenium complex.

Abstract
Over the recent decades, due to the special electronic characteristics and diverse reactivities, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) has received significant interest in organocatalyzed reactions. The formation of Breslow intermediates by NHC can convert into acyl anion equivalent, enolates, homoenolate, acyl azolium, and vinyl enolate etc., and the cycloaddition reactions of these species has attracted lots of attention. In this review, we focus on the summry of the development of NHC-activation of carbonyl carbon (or imine carbon) in situ, α-, β-, γ-, and beyond, and the cycloaddition reaction of these species.

Abstract
In this account, we further describe our already developed N-sp2 hybrid guanidinium as an efficient phase-transfer catalyst and ion pair catalysis based on N-sp2 hybrid pentanidinium and its application in some new reactions. The sp3 hybrid quaternary ammonium salt has a tetrahedral structure, which means that three sides of it can be effectively steric, allowing the remaining side to be close to the substrate. However, the sp2 hybrid ammonium salt allows the substrate to form ion pairs from both directions respectively, so it is a greater challenge to control the stereoselectivity of the reaction. Van der Waals forces, such as hydrogen bonds and π - π ${\pi -\pi }$ interactions, have been used to make electrophiles approach from a certain direction, leading to a higher enantioselectivity. Based on the above idea, we designed an N-sp2 hybrid phase-transfer catalyst, pentanidinium. Pentanidinium has five conjugated nitrogen atoms, one of which has a formal positive charge, which is necessary for it to become an ion pair catalyst. We have confirmed that pentanidinium can catalyze α-hydroxylation of 3-substituted-2-oxindoles, Michael addition of 3-alkyloxindoles with vinyl sulfone, and alkylation reactions of sulfenate anions and dihydrocoumarins, desymmetrization of pro-chiral sulfinate to afford enantioenriched sulfinate esters. Pentanidinium with side chain structure changes can also be catalyzed efficiently with enantioconvergent halogenophilic nucleophilic substitution, including azidation and thioesterification. In the reaction catalyzed by pentanidinium, it always attracts us with the advantages of low catalytic load and good enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Three-component carboacylation of simple alkenes with readily available reagents is challenging. Transition metal-catalysed intermolecular carboacylation works for alkenes with strained ring or directing groups. Herein, we develop a photoredox cooperative N-heterocyclic carbene/Pd-catalysed alkylacylation of simple alkenes with aldehydes and unactivated alkyl halides to provide ketones in good yields. This multicomponent coupling reaction features a wide scope of alkenes, broad functional group compatibility and free of exogenous photosensitizer or external reductant. In addition, a series of chlorinated cyclopropanes with one or two vicinal quaternary carbons is obtained when chloroform or carbon tetrachloride is used as the alkyl halide. The reaction involves the alkyl radicals from halides and the ketyl radicals from aldehydes under photoredox cooperative N-heterocyclic carbene/Pd catalysis. Three-component carboacylation of simple alkenes often requires directing groups and strained substrates. Here, the authors report a photoredox N-heteroyclic carbene/Pd-catalysed alkylacylation of alkenes with aldehydes and unactivated alkyl halides; exogenous photosensitizer or external reductant are not required.

Abstract
The recent advances in the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-organocatalyzed generation of azolium enolate intermediates and their subsequent interception with electrophiles are highlighted. The NHC-bound azolium intermediates are generated by the addition of NHCs to suitably substituted aldehydes, acid derivatives or ketenes. A broad range of coupling partners can intercept the azolium enolates to form [2+n] cycloadducts (n=2,3,4) and various α-functionalized compounds. The enantioselective synthesis of the target compounds are achieved with the use of chiral NHCs. Herein, we summarized the development that occurred in this subclass of NHC catalysis.

Abstract
We report herein an unprecedented gold and oxidative NHC relay catalysis that enables highly enantioselective cascade annulation between readily available α-amino-ynones with enals. This method utilizes the in situ-generated pyrrolin-4-ones as a novel and versatile synthon, which engage with α,β-unsaturated acylazolium intermediates generated from enals by oxidative NHC catalysis to produce pyrrole-fused lactones in high yield and excellent enantioselectivity. Synthetic utility of the lactone products is also demonstrated by facile conversion to densely functionalized pyrroles and pyrrolin-4-ones in high yields with excellent stereopurity.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis has emerged as a versatile tool in modern synthetic chemistry. Further increasing the complexity, several processes have been introduced that proceed via dual catalysis, where the NHC organocatalyst operates in concert with a second catalytic moiety, significantly enlarging the reaction scope. In biological transformations, multiple catalysis is generally used to access complex natural products. Guided by that strategy, triple catalysis has been studied recently, where three different catalytic modes are merged in a single process. In this Communication, direct α-C-H acylation of various alkenes with aroyl fluorides using NHC, sulfinate, and photoredox cooperative triple catalysis is reported. The method allows the preparation of α-substituted vinyl ketones in moderate to high yields with excellent functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies reveal that these cascades proceed through a sequential radical addition/coupling/elimination process. In contrast to known triple catalysis processes that operate via two sets of interwoven catalysis cycles, in the introduced process, all three cycles are interwoven.

Abstract
As a key element in the construction of complex organic scaffolds, the formation of C-C bonds remains a challenge in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. Recent advancements in single-electron chemistry have enabled new methods for the formation of various C-C bonds. Disclosed herein is the development of a novel single-electron reduction of acyl azoliums for the formation of ketones from carboxylic acids. Facile construction of the acyl azolium in situ followed by a radical-radical coupling was made possible merging N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and photoredox catalysis. The utility of this protocol in synthesis was showcased in the late-stage functionalization of a variety of pharmaceutical compounds. Preliminary investigations using chiral NHCs demonstrate that enantioselectivity can be achieved, showcasing the advantages of this protocol over alternative methodologies.

Abstract
Coumarin-3-formylpyrazoles have been synthesized and applied as 3-carbon synthons in reaction with 3-hydroxyoxindoles by using DABCO as the catalyst. A range of structurally diverse spiro-fused pentacyclic spirooxindoles, bearing a spirooxindole-γ-lactone and a 3,4-dihydrocoumarin substructure, could be smoothly obtained in good to excellent yields (up to 99%) with excellent diastereoselectivities (all cases >20 : 1 dr). The asymmetric version of this tandem reaction was preliminarily investigated by using chiral organocatalysts.
