Abstract
This investigation presents the synthesis of butyl-decorated calix[n]phenoxazines of varying sizes by kinetic control and the ring-expansion of calix[3]phenoxazine, which uniquely exhibits distinct binding affinities for fullerenes C60 and C70. Calix[3]phenoxazine demonstrates a higher binding affinity for cationic ammonium, which can be reversibly deprotonated and protonated, enabling the reversible release and reloading of fullerenes. This system holds potential for applications in fullerene extraction and separation.

Abstract
Two o-carborane-hybridized macrocyclic arenes have been synthesized via Friedel-Crafts alkylation of carborane diaryl derivatives. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis clearly revealed their cavity structure and intermolecular interaction force. These novel macrocycles exhibited aggregation-induced luminescence and intramolecular charge transfer properties and also significant selectivity towards nitro explosive compounds. This work provided a method for the synthesis of hybridized macrocyclic arenes.

Abstract
Macrocyclic arenes represent one of the most important and intensively investigated entities in supramolecular chemistry. However, research on the redox activities of macrocyclic arenes, especially their isolable and crystalline polyradical analogues, has been rarely reported. Here, we present the synthesis, redox activity, and application of methylene-bridged macrocyclic phenothiazines, where polyradical cations are successfully isolated and unambiguously characterized for the first time. This research provides an effective method for preparing polyradical macrocycles, which expands the scope of investigation into macrocyclic arenes and their potential applications.

Abstract
Phenol-based macrocycles play a fundamental role in supramolecular chemistry, but their size has been rather limited. Here we report a novel class of very large, bowl-shaped macrocycles with a diameter of 21.8 Å. These quinoacridane[4]arenes are 150% larger than the current record holders, the acridane[4]arenes, and three times the size of resorcin[4]arene. We expect the quinoacridane[4]arenes to be a useful platform for the construction of molecular containers.

Abstract
Hexadimethrine bromide (HB), a synthetic polycationic species, was introduced to clinical practice as a heparin antidote and recently used in gene therapy. However, HB causes various complications such as severe red blood cells (RBCs) aggregation and tissue damage. Herein, we have synthesized a water-soluble quaterphen[3]arene containing multiple sulfonate moieties (SQP3) as a novel macrocyclic neutralizer to reverse HB via direct host-guest complexation. SQP3 exhibited a robust binding affinity toward HB with a considerably high association constant of (4.73 ± 0.61) × 107 M-1. Co-dosed with 1 equiv of SQP3, HB-induced RBCs aggregation and blood coagulation could be effectively reversed. In vitro cellular assay verified that complexation of HB with SQP3 significantly decreased reactive oxygen species production, thereby suppressing cell apoptosis. In vivo neutralization efficacy studies demonstrated that HB/SQP3 was capable of alleviating related organic damage caused by HB and improving the survival rate of HB-treated mice from 20 to 100%.

Abstract
The hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsule has been utilized as one of the most versatile supramolecular capsule catalysts. Enlarging its size would enable expansion of the substrate size scope. However, no larger catalytically active versions have been reported. Herein, we introduce a novel class of macrocycles, named window[1]resorcin[3]arene (wRS), that assemble to a cage-like hexameric host. The new host was studied by NMR, encapsulation experiments, and molecular dynamics simulations. The cage is able to bind tetraalkylammonium ions that are too large for encapsulation inside the hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsule. Most importantly, it retained its catalytic activity, and the accelerated conversion of a large substrate that does not fit the closed hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsule was observed. Thus, it will help to expand the limited substrate size scope of the closed hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsule.

Abstract
Macrocyclic arenes have emerged as pivotal scaffolds in supramolecular chemistry. Despite their significant contributions to molecular recognition and diverse applications, challenges persist in the development of macrocyclic arene-based crystalline materials, particularly in achieving porosity and addressing limitations in adsorption efficiency resulting from the small cavity sizes of existing macrocyclic arenes. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel macrocyclic arene, clamparene (CLP), featuring a rigid backbone, easy synthesis, and a sizable cavity. CLP self-assembles into one-dimensional sub-nanotubes that further organize into a three-dimensional porous framework in the solid state. The crystalline solid of CLP exhibits potential as a porous crystalline adsorbent for various benzene-based contaminants with rapid adsorption kinetics, large uptake amounts, and good recyclability.

Abstract
Despite the large number of synthetic macrocycles, the cubarenes, the quadrangular-shaped macrocyclic arenes, remain less investigated, possibly due either to synthetic challenges or to the lack of suitable building blocks. In this paper, a N-embedded cubarene (cub[4]indolocarbazole) is facilely synthesized by FeCl3·6H2O-catalyzed cyclization in dichloromethane. The endo cavity of cub[4]indolocarbazole can bury quaternary ammonium salts in an intramolecular manner, whereas the intermolecular interaction between its exo walls with Cu2+ generates two-dimensional supramolecular tessellation.

Abstract
Herein, host-guest complexation between pagoda[n]arenes (n = 4, P4; n = 5, P5) and tropylium cation (G) was investigated in detail. It was found that both P4 and P5 showed surprisingly strong binding affinities toward the tropylium cation with association constants of more than 107 M-1 for the 1:1 host-guest complexes. The theoretical calculations showed different host-guest complexion ways for complexes G@P4 and G@P5 and the strong π···π interactions and multiple C-H···π interactions play a very important role in the formation of these stable complexes, respectively. Moreover, the switchable processes of guest binding and release in the complexes can be effectively controlled by redox stimuli, and they can be also visible by the color and fluorescence changes.

Abstract
Despite the advances in host-guest chemistry, macrocyclic hosts with deep cavities are far from abundant among the large number of wholly synthetic hosts described in the literature. Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of two new tubular hosts, namely, corral[4]arene and corral[5]arene. The former has been isolated and characterized as two conformational diastereoisomers, one is centrosymmetric and the other asymmetric. The latter, a fivefold symmetrical and flexible host, has also been investigated in detail. It is composed of five 4,4'-dimethoxybiphenyl units bridged by ethynylene linkers at their 2,2'-positions and adopts a pentagonal conformation with a tubular-shaped cavity in the presence of guests. This structure endows corral[5]arene not only with a conjugated backbone, capable of bright fluorescent emission (quantum yield, 56%), but also a deep π-electron-rich aromatic cavity with remarkable conformational flexibility. The adaptive cavity of corral[5]arene allows it to accommodate a wide range of neutral and positively charged electron-deficient guests with different molecular sizes and shapes. Binding constants between this host and these guests in three different nonpolar organic solvents lie in the range of 103 to 107 M-1. Moreover, corral[5]arene exhibits dynamic chirality on account of the axes of chirality associated with each of the five biphenyl units and displays first-order transformation as exhibited by circular dichroism in response to the addition of chiral guests. All these stereochemical features render corral[5]arene an attractive host for a variety of supramolecular and nanotechnological applications.

Abstract
In this work, we developed a new method for the preparation of phenanthrene[2]arene on a large-scale. Meanwhile, the synthetic phenanthrene[2]arene has been successfully used as nonporous adaptive crystals for the separation of para-xylene (pX) from xylene isomers. The crystal structure revealed that one host molecule can adsorb one pX molecule to form the 1@pX complex, in which pX is located in the cavity of the host. A new method for the preparation of phenanthrene[2]arene on a large-scale was developed. The synthetic phenanthrene[2]arene has been successfully used as nonporous adaptive crystals for the separation of para-xylene from xylene isomers.![]()

Abstract
A "rim-differentiated" pillar[6]arene (RD-P[6]) was obtained successfully, with the assistance of a dimeric silver trifluoroacetate template, among eight different constitutional isomers in a direct and regioselective manner. The solid-state conformation of this macrocycle could switch from the 1,3,5-alternate to a truly rim-differentiated one upon guest inclusion. This highly symmetric RD-P[6] not only hosts metal-containing molecules inside its cavity, but also can form a pillar[6]arene-C60 adduct through co-crystallization on account of donor-acceptor interactions. The development of synthetic strategies to desymmetrize pillararenes offers new opportunities for engineering complex molecular architectures and organic electronic materials.

Abstract
Macrocyclic compounds are fundamental tools in supramolecular chemistry and have been widely used in molecular recognition, biomedicine, and materials science. The construction of new macrocycles with distinctive structures and properties would unleash new opportunities for supramolecular chemistry. Traditionally popular macrocycles, e.g., cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbiturils, and pillararenes, possess specific cavities that are usually less than 10 Å in diameter; they are normally suitable for accommodating small- or medium-sized guests but cannot engulf giant molecules or structures. Furthermore, the skeletons of traditional macrocycles are impoverished and incapable of being changed; functional substituents can be introduced only on their portals. Thus, it is very challenging to construct macrocycles with customizable cavity sizes and/or diverse backbones. We have developed a versatile and modular strategy for synthesizing macrocycles, namely, biphen[n]arenes (n = 3-8), based on the structure- or function-oriented replacement of reaction modules, functional modules, and linking modules. First, two reaction modules and one functional module are connected by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling to obtain a monomer having two reaction sites. Then Friedel-Crafts alkylation between the monomer and an aldehyde (linking module) serves to afford diversely functionalized macrocycles. Moreover, large macrocycles can be achieved by using long and rigid oligo(para-phenylene) monomers. Because of the modular synthesis and plentiful molecular supplies, the biphen[n]arenes showed interesting recognition properties for both small molecules and large polypeptides. Customizable functional backbones and binding sites endowed this new family of macrocycles with peculiar self-assembly properties and potential applications in gas chromatography, pollutant capture, and physisorptive separation. Biphen[n]arenes would be a promising family of workhorses in supramolecular chemistry. In this Account, we summarize our recent work on the chemistry of biphen[n]arenes. We introduce their design and modular synthesis, including systematic exploration for reaction modules, customizable cavity sizes, skeleton functionalization, pre- and postmodification, and molecular cages. Thereafter, we discuss their host-guest properties, involving the binding for small guests by cationic/anionic/neutral biphen[n]arenes, as well as the complexation of polypeptides by large quaterphen[n]arenes. In addition, we outline the self-assembly and potential applications of this new family of macrocycles. Finally, we forecast their further development. The chemistry of biphen[n]arenes is still in its infancy. Continued exploration will not only further expand the supramolecular toolbox but also open new avenues for the use of biphen[n]arenes in the fields of biology, pharmaceutical science, and materials science.

Abstract
A novel pyromellitic diimide-extended pillar[6]arene was synthesized in two steps with moderate yield for the first time. It showed a symmetrical stretched hexagon structure and could form 1:2 complexes with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in solution. Interestingly, a linear supramolecular array between complex 1@G42 and pyrene through π···π stacking interactions was also observed in the solid state.

Abstract
Methylene-bridge-substituted pillar[6]arenes (PA[6]) are synthesized by step-growth cyclo-oligomerization. Dimers, trimers, tetramers, and hexamers with substituted methylene bridges are synthesized. Hexamers are converted to PA[6] derivatives with alternating methylene bridge substitutions by ring-closing reactions. PA[6] derivatives are further modified with pyrene groups or carboxylate groups by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. The modifications render PA[6] fluorescent or water-soluble. A host-guest chemistry study confirms that the water-soluble PA[6] derivative is a high-affinity host toward suitable guests in water.

Abstract
Macrocyclic host molecules play the central role in host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. The highly structural symmetry of macrocyclic host molecules can meet people's pursuit of aesthetics in molecular design, and generally means a balance of design, synthesis, properties and applications. For macrocyclic host molecules with highly symmetrical structures, building blocks, which could be described as repeat units as well, are the most fundamental elements for molecular design. The structural features and recognition ability of macrocyclic host molecules are determined by the building blocks and their connection patterns. Using different building blocks, different macrocyclic host molecules could be designed and synthesized. With decades of developments of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry, diverse macrocyclic host molecules with different building blocks have been designed and synthesized. Aromatic building blocks are a big family among the various building blocks used in constructing macrocyclic host molecules. In this feature article, the recent developments of macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks were summarized and discussed.

Abstract
A new class of macrocycles denoted as "xanthene[n]arenes" was synthesized. In contrast to most other macrocycles, they feature a conformationally restricted bowl shape due to the attached alkyl groups at the linking methylene units. This facilitates the synthesis of cavitands and the self-assembly to molecular capsules via noncovalent interactions. The derivatization potential of the novel macrocycles was demonstrated on the xanthene[3]arene scaffold. Besides a deep cavitand and an oxygen-embedded zigzag hydrocarbon belt[12]arene, a modified macrocycle was synthesized that self-assembles into a hydrogen-bonded tetrameric capsule, demonstrating the potential of xanthene[n]arenes as a new set of macrocyclic building blocks.

Abstract
Macrocycles denoted as saucer[n]arenes (n=4,5) were easily synthesized by the one-pot condensation of 2,7-dimethoxynaphthalene (2,7-DMN) and paraformaldehyde in the presence of TFA or catalytic BF3 ⋅OEt2 . With 1,1-dimethylpiperidin-1-ium as the template, saucer[4]arene was selectively obtained. Crystal structures show that saucer[n]arenes are all composed of 2,7-DMN moiety bridged by the methylene groups at 1,6-positions: all of the 7-methoxy groups lie on one face, and all of the 2-methoxy groups lie on the other. Saucer[n]arenes exhibit strong fluorescence properties with the quantum yields of 19.6 % and 23.4 %. They form 1:1 complexes with ammonium salts in both solution and solid state (association constant up to 105 M-1 in CDCl3 ). Chiral quaternary ammonium salts can induce the chirality of the dynamically racemic inherently chiral saucer[n]arenes in solution, and thus show mirror-imaged circular dichroism signals and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties.

Abstract
A new strategy has been developed for the direct chirality fixation, which is induced by electrochemical polymerization, of macrocyclic hosts pillar[5]arene. Taking advantage of electrochemical polymerization, thiophene-modified pillar[5]arene monomers (Th-P[5]A) have been regularly arranged under the action of an electric field to form chiral nanofiber-like crystalline pillar[5]arene-based polymers (poly-Th-P[5]A), showing a significant circular dichroism (CD) signal. With the active photochemical properties, poly-Th-P[5]A is first used as a photoelectrochemical (PEC) chiral sensor for the identification and determination of l- and d-ascorbic acid (l-AA, d-AA) without adding any extra photoactive probes. Importantly, the chiral recognition between poly-Th-P[5]A and l-AA also triggers a polarity conversion for the photocurrent of the polymer, and it greatly results in a broad chiral detection range for l-AA, crossing 6 orders of magnitude. This work provides a promotional strategy for building a PEC chiral recognition platform based on pillararenes.

Abstract
Giant shape amphiphiles (GSA) are giant molecules made with nano-building blocks that have distinct shapes. The incompatible packing behaviors of the nano-building blocks of GSA could create cavities within certain conformers of the GSA, but the host-guest chemistry of GSA has not been explored yet. In this study, POSS-PDI-POSS (PPP), which is made by connecting two nano-cubes, isobutyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), to a conjugated π-conjugated core, perylene diimide (PDI), is demonstrated as a novel acyclic synthetic host. In its bent conformer, PPP shows a cavity next to its PDI core. Via forming host-guest complexes with π-conjugated guests such as pyrene and perylene, PPP is found to transform from the bent-conformer into the extended-conformer, creating the steric features to accommodate guest molecules. Subsequent thermal annealing of the host-guest complexes removes the π-conjugated guests and restores the bent conformation and photophysical properties of PPP, which verifies that PPP, as a novel acyclic host, is capable of dynamic host-guest assembly. Moreover, the results prove that cavities at the molecular level can be created by connecting nano-building blocks with distinct shapes. This finding may inspire developments in the host-guest chemistry of GSA and nanomaterial innovation.

Abstract
We report novel pseudorotaxanes based on the complexation between pillar[4]arene[1]quinone and 1,10-dibromodecane. The complexation is found to have a 1:1 host–guest complexation stoichiometry in chloroform but a 2:1 host–guest complexation stoichiometry in the solid state. From single crystal X-ray diffraction, the linear guest molecules thread into cyclic pillar[4]arene[1]quinone host molecules in the solid state, stabilized by CH∙∙∙π interactions and hydrogen bonds. The bromine atoms at the periphery of the guest molecule provide convenience for the further capping of the pseudorotaxanes to construct rotaxanes.

Abstract
Conformational exchanges of synthetic macrocyclic acceptors are rather fast, which is rarely studied in the absence of guests. Here, we report multiple stimuli-responsive conformational exchanges between two preexisting conformations of 2,2',4,4'-tetramethoxyl biphen[3]arene (MeBP3) macrocycle. Structures of these two conformations are both observed in solid state, and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and 2D NMR in solution. In particular, conformational exchanges can respond to solvents, temperatures, guest binding and acid/base addition. The current system may have a role to play in the construction of molecular switches and other stimuli-responsive systems.
