Design of Patchy Rhombi: From Close-Packed Tilings to Open Lattices

In the realm of functional materials, the production of two-dimensional structures with tunable porosity is of paramount relevance for many practical applications: surfaces with regular arrays of pores can be used for selective adsorption or immobilization of guest units that are complementary in shape and/or size to the pores, thus achieving, for instance, selective filtering or well-defined responses to external stimuli. The principles that govern the formation of such structures are valid at both the molecular and the colloidal scale. Here we provide simple design directions to combine the anisotropic shape of the building units-either molecules or colloids-and selective directional bonding. Using extensive computer simulations, we show that regular rhombic platelets decorated with attractive and repulsive interaction sites form specific tilings, going smoothly from close-packed arrangements to open lattices. The rationale behind the rich tiling scenario observed can be described in terms of steric incompatibilities, unsatisfied bonding geometries, and interplays between local and long-range order.

Modular Molecular Nanoplastics

In view of their facile fabrication and recycling, functional materials that are built from small molecules ("molecular plastics") may represent a cost-efficient and sustainable alternative to conventional covalent materials. We show how molecular plastics can be made robust and how their (nano)structure can be tuned via modular construction. For this purpose, we employed binary composites of organic nanocrystals based on a perylene diimide derivative, with graphene oxide (GO), bentonite nanoclay (NC), or hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), that both reinforce and enable tailoring the properties of the membranes. The hybrids are prepared via a simple aqueous deposition method, exhibit enhanced mechanical robustness, and can be recycled. We utilized these properties to create separation membranes with tunable porosity that are easy to fabricate and recycle. Hybrids 1/HEC and 1/NC are capable of ultrafiltration, and 1/NC removes heavy metals from water with high efficiency. Hybrid 1/GO shows mechanical properties akin to covalent materials with just 2-10% (by weight) of GO. This hybrid was used as a membrane for immobilizing β-galactosidase that demonstrated long and stable biocatalytic activity. Our findings demonstrate the utility of modular molecular nanoplastics as robust and sustainable materials that enable efficient tuning of structure and function and are based on self-assembly of readily available inexpensive components.

Orientational phase behavior of polymer-grafted nanocubes

Surface functionalization of nanoparticles with polymer grafts was recently shown to be a viable strategy for controlling the relative orientation of shaped nanoparticles in their higher-order assemblies. In this study, we investigated in silico the orientational phase behavior of coplanar polymer-grafted nanocubes confined in a thin film. We first used Monte Carlo simulations to compute the two-particle interaction free-energy landscape of the nanocubes and identify their globally stable configurations. The nanocubes were found to exhibit four stable phases: those with edge-edge and face-face orientations, and those exhibiting partially overlapped slanted and parallel faces previously assumed to be metastable. Moreover, the edge-edge configuration originally thought to involve kissing edges instead displayed partly overlapping edges, where the extent of the overlap depends on the attachment positions of the grafts. We next formulated analytical scaling expressions for the free energies of the identified configurations, which were used for constructing a comprehensive phase diagram of nanocube orientation in a multidimensional parameter space comprising of the size and interaction strength of the nanocubes and the Kuhn length and surface density of the grafts. The morphology of the phase diagram was shown to arise from an interplay between polymer- and surface-mediated interactions, especially differences in their scalings with respect to nanocube size and grafting density across the four phases. The phase diagram provided insights into tuning these interactions through the various parameters of the system for achieving target configurations. Overall, this work provides a framework for predicting and engineering interparticle configurations, with possible applications in plasmonic nanocomposites where control over particle orientation is critical.

Practical use of polymer brushes in sustainable energy applications: interfacial nanoarchitectonics for high-efficiency devices

The discovery and development of novel approaches, materials and manufacturing processes in the field of energy are compelling increasing recognition as a major challenge for contemporary societies. The performance and lifetime of energy devices are critically dependent on nanoscale interfacial phenomena. From the viewpoint of materials design, the improvement of current technologies inevitably relies on gaining control over the complex interface between dissimilar materials. In this sense, interfacial nanoarchitectonics with polymer brushes has seen growing interest due to its potential to overcome many of the limitations of energy storage and conversion devices. Polymer brushes offer a broad variety of resources to manipulate interfacial properties and gain molecular control over the synergistic combination of materials. Many recent examples show that the rational integration of polymer brushes in hybrid nanoarchitectures greatly improves the performance of energy devices in terms of power density, lifetime and stability. Seen in this light, polymer brushes provide a new perspective from which to consider the development of hybrid materials and devices with improved functionalities. The aim of this review is therefore to focus on what polymer brush-based solutions can offer and to show how the practical use of surface-grafted polymer layers can improve the performance and efficiency of fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, organic radical batteries, supercapacitors, photoelectrochemical cells and photovoltaic devices.

Responsive Nanoporous Membranes with Size Selectivity and Charge Rejection from Self-Assembly of Polyelectrolyte "Hairy" Nanoparticles

We report the preparation and characterization of charged nanoporous membranes by self-assembly of "hairy" silica nanoparticles (HNPs) functionalized with polyelectrolyte copolymer brushes. We show that HNP membranes possess high water flux, have well-defined pore sizes, and rejection up to 80% of charged species in solution. The properties of these membranes can be tuned by controlling the length and composition of polymer brushes and the electrolyte concentration in solution. We demonstrate that membrane pore sizes undergo changes of up to 40% in response to changes in the ionic strength of the salt solution. Using MD computer simulations of a coarse-grained model, we link these tunable properties to the conformations of polymer chains in the spaces between randomly packed HNPs. As polymer length increases, the polymers fill the interparticle gaps, and the pore size decreases markedly. On the basis of their straightforward fabrication and tunable properties, HNP membranes may find applications in size- and charge-selective separations, water desalination, and responsive devices.

Diffusion of Proteins across Silica Colloidal Crystals

We studied the diffusion of three model proteins, lysozyme (Lz), bovine hemoglobin (BHb), and bovine serum albumin (BSA), normal to the (111) plane of sintered silica colloidal crystals with three different pore "radii" (7.5, 19, and 27 nm). We demonstrated that these colloidal crystals exhibit size selectivity when the nanopores are sufficiently small (7.5 and 19 nm). Because these nanopores are still larger than the diffusing proteins, the observed size selectivity can be attributed to the tortuosity of the colloidal nanopores. Larger (27 nm) nanopores led to higher transport rates but at the cost of selectivity. In addition to the size selectivity, we also demonstrated that 19 nm nanopores possess shape selectivity for the proteins of comparable molecular weights. We showed that the high temperature sintering required for the preparation of sintered colloidal crystals reduces the extent of interactions between the proteins and the nanopore surface, which appear to play a minor role in the diffusion, and that transport selectivity is decided solely by protein size and shape. Taken together, our observations suggest that sintered silica colloidal crystals constitute promising nanoporous membranes for protein separations, with easily controllable pore size, size and shape selectivity, and minimal surface fouling.

Selective Transport through Membranes with Charged Nanochannels Formed by Scalable Self-Assembly of Random Copolymer Micelles

Membranes that can separate compounds based on molecular properties can revolutionize the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. This study reports membranes capable of separating organic molecules of similar size based on their electrostatic charge. These membranes feature a network of carboxylate-functionalized 1-3 nm nanochannels, manufactured by a simple, scalable coating process: a porous support is coated with a packed array of polymer micelles in alcohol, formed by the self-assembly of a water-insoluble random copolymer with fluorinated and carboxyl functional repeat units. The interstices between these micelles serve as charged nanochannels through which water and solutes can pass. The negatively charged carboxylate groups lead to high separation selectivities between organic solutes of similar size but different charge. In single-solute diffusion experiments, neutral solutes permeate up to 263 times faster than negatively charged compounds of similar size. This selectivity is further enhanced in experiments with mixtures of these solutes. No permeation of the anionic compound was observed for over 24 h. In filtration experiments, these membranes separate anionic and neutral organic compounds while exhibiting water fluxes comparable to that of commercial membranes. Furthermore, carboxylate groups can be functionalized, creating membranes with nanopores with customizable functionality to enable a broad range of selective separations.

Nanoscale tailor-made membranes for precise and rapid molecular sieve separation

The precise and rapid separation of different molecules from aqueous, organic solutions and gas mixtures is critical to many technologies in the context of resource-saving and sustainable development. The strength of membrane-based technologies is well recognized and they are extensively applied as cost-effective, highly efficient separation techniques. Currently, empirical-based approaches, lacking an accurate nanoscale control, are used to prepare the most advanced membranes. In contrast, nanoscale control renders the membrane molecular specificity (sub-2 nm) necessary for efficient and rapid molecular separation. Therefore, as a growing trend in membrane technology, the field of nanoscale tailor-made membranes is highlighted in this review. An in-depth analysis of the latest advances in tailor-made membranes for precise and rapid molecule sieving is given, along with an outlook to future perspectives of such membranes. Special attention is paid to the established processing strategies, as well as the application of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in nanoporous membrane design. This review will provide useful guidelines for future research in the development of nanoscale tailor-made membranes with a precise and rapid molecular sieve separation property.

Gated Molecular Transport in Highly Ordered Heterogeneous Nanochannel Array Electrode

In biology, all protein channels share a common feature of containing narrow pore regions with hydrophobic functional groups and selectivity filter regions abundant with charged residues, which work together to account for fast and selective mass transport in and out of cells. In this work, an ultrathin layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was evaporated on the top orifices of charged silica nanochannels (2-3 nm in diameter and 60 nm in length) vertically attached to the electrode surface, and the resulting structure is designated as heterogeneous silica nanochannels (HSNs). As evidenced by voltammetric studies, the transport of ionic species in these HSNs was controlled by both hydrophobic rejection and electrostatic force arising from the top PDMS layer and from the bottom silica nanochannels, respectively. Anionic species encountered both hydrophobic rejection and electrostatic repulsion forces, and thus, their transport was strongly prohibited, while the transport of cationic species was permitted once the electrostatic attraction exceeded the hydrophobic rejection. Moreover, the magnitude of hydrophobic force could be regulated by the PDMS layer thickness, and that of the electrostatic force can be modulated by the salt concentration, solution pH, or applied voltage. It was demonstrated that the HSNs could be activated from an OFF state (no ion can transport) to an ON state (only cation transport occurs) by decreasing the salt concentration, increasing the solution pH, or applying negative voltages.

Ligand Shell Composition-Dependent Effects on the Apparent Hydrophobicity and Film Behavior of Gold Nanoparticles at the Air-Water Interface

Nanoparticles with well-defined interfacial energy and wetting properties are needed for a broad range of applications involving nanoparticle self-assembly including the formation of superlattices, stability of Pickering emulsions, and for the control of nanoparticle interactions with biological membranes. Theoretical, simulated, and recent experimental studies have found nanometer-scale chemical heterogeneity to have important effects on hydrophobic interactions. Here we report the study of 4 nm gold nanoparticles with compositionally well-defined mixed ligand shells of hydroxyl-(OH) and methyl-(CH3) terminated alkylthiols as Langmuir films. Compositions ranging from 0-25% hydroxyl were examined and reveal nonmonotonic changes in particle hydrophobicity at the air-water interface. Unlike nanoparticles capped exclusively with a methyl-terminated alkylthiol, extensive particle aggregation is found for ligand shells containing <2% hydroxyl-terminated chains. This aggregation was lessened upon increasing the quantity of OH-terminated chains. Nanoparticles capped with 25% OH yield films of well-separated nanoparticles exhibiting a fluid-phase regime in the surface pressure vs area isotherm. Compression-expansion hysteresis, monolayer collapse, and mean nanoparticle area measurements support the TEM-observed changes in film morphology. Such clear changes in the hydrophobicity of nanoparticles based on very small changes in the ligand shell composition are shown to impact the process of interfacial nanoparticle self-assembly and are an important demonstration of nanoscale wetting with consequences in both materials and biological applications of nanoparticles that require tunable hydrophobicity.

Self-Assembly of Colloidal Nanocrystals: From Intricate Structures to Functional Materials

Chemical methods developed over the past two decades enable preparation of colloidal nanocrystals with uniform size and shape. These Brownian objects readily order into superlattices. Recently, the range of accessible inorganic cores and tunable surface chemistries dramatically increased, expanding the set of nanocrystal arrangements experimentally attainable. In this review, we discuss efforts to create next-generation materials via bottom-up organization of nanocrystals with preprogrammed functionality and self-assembly instructions. This process is often driven by both interparticle interactions and the influence of the assembly environment. The introduction provides the reader with a practical overview of nanocrystal synthesis, self-assembly, and superlattice characterization. We then summarize the theory of nanocrystal interactions and examine fundamental principles governing nanocrystal self-assembly from hard and soft particle perspectives borrowed from the comparatively established fields of micrometer colloids and block copolymer assembly. We outline the extensive catalog of superlattices prepared to date using hydrocarbon-capped nanocrystals with spherical, polyhedral, rod, plate, and branched inorganic core shapes, as well as those obtained by mixing combinations thereof. We also provide an overview of structural defects in nanocrystal superlattices. We then explore the unique possibilities offered by leveraging nontraditional surface chemistries and assembly environments to control superlattice structure and produce nonbulk assemblies. We end with a discussion of the unique optical, magnetic, electronic, and catalytic properties of ordered nanocrystal superlattices, and the coming advances required to make use of this new class of solids.
