Abstract
Organic luminescent materials that can simultaneously achieve multimode mechanochromism and its water-vapor-induced recovery are desirable for practical applications but rarely reported. Herein, an amphiphilic compound, 4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyridin-1-ium bromide (CPAB), is designed by integrating a lipophilic aromatic unit and hydrophilic end in the molecular architecture. Self-recovered mechanochromism from brown to cyan is observed upon mechanical grinding in air. Comprehensive research by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and single-crystal analysis reveals that the photoluminescence switch originates from the variation in intermolecular hydrogen bonds and molecular packing mode. The amphiphilic nature of CPAB allows water molecules to enter the crystalline lattice, forming two polymorphs of the crystalline phase, namely CPAB-D and CPAB-W. The hydrosoluble CPAB exhibits excellent capability in probing the level 3 details of fingerprints because its lipophilic part can target the fatty acid residues of fingerprints, leading to strong aggregation-induced fluorescence. The research may inspire the design of latent fingerprint developers and application in forensics/anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract
Stimuli-response organic solid-state luminescence switching materials are attracting increasing interest due to their smart photophysical properties. In this study, a morpholine-modified naphthalic anhydride derivative, 4-(4-morpholinyl)naphthalic anhydride (MBC), was synthesized and studied. Its two crystal polymorphs, MBC-G and MBC-O, were obtained under different crystallization conditions. These two distinct crystals show significantly different solid-state luminescence behaviors: a green emission at 535 nm for MBC-G, and an orange emission at 572 nm for MBC-O. Upon fiercely grinding the MBC-G crystal or melting and then quickly cooling it, a phase transition occurs from MBC-G to MBC-O, accompanied by a fluorescence change from green to orange. The reverse transformation from MBC-O to MBC-G can be achieved by recrystallization. The X-ray single crystal structures show that the green emission should be attributed to molecular J-aggregation in the crystal packing, and the orange emission may originate from molecular H-aggregation. This switchable color nature gives MBC the promising candidate for potential smart anti-counterfeiting and light-emitting materials.

Abstract
The binding behaviours of a transport protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), in its native, unfolding and refolding states have been probed by monitoring the emission changes of two exogenous AIE-active fluorescent probes, M2 and M3, which are designed to be anionic and cationic, respectively. Due to their AIE properties, both M2 and M3 display emission enhancement when bound to the hydrophobic cavity of BSA. The binding site of M2 and M3 is found to be subdomain IIA. Then, the BSA + M2 and BSA + M3 systems are utilized to fluorescently signal the conformation changes of BSA caused by various external stimuli, including thermally or chemically induced denaturation. The data confirmed the multi-step unfolding process and the existence of a molten-globule intermediate state. The unfolding process consists of the rearrangement of subdomain IIA, the exposure of a negatively charged binding site in domain I that prefers interacting with cationic species, and the transformation of the molten-globule intermediate into the final random coil. The anionic and cationic modifications of the probes enable us to observe that electrostatic interactions play a role in the folding and unfolding of BSA.

Anion-controlled dimer distance induced unique solid-state fluorescence of cyano substituted styrene pyridinium. Sci Rep 2016; 6:37609. Abstract
Molecular packing arrangements play a key role in dominating the photophysical properties of luminophores in aggregated state but fine control of the molecular packing is a great challenge. This article describes a unique cyano substituted styrene pyridinium with interesting solid-state fluorescence that can be finely tuned by simple change of counteranions. The dilute solutions of the organic salts (PyCl, PyNO3, PyOTs and PyPh4B) exhibit very weak fluorescence. The crystals of the organic salts (PyCl, PyNO3, and PyOTs) show much enhanced fluorescence compared with their dilute solutions. It is interesting that the emissions changed from bluish-green to deep-blue and fluorescence quantum yields increase from 2.5% to 13.1% with the increasing of steric hindrance of the anions from chloridion, nitrate, to p-toluenesulfonate. Crystal and DFT studies reveal that the enhanced fluorescence is ascribed to the formation of dimers and bigger anions induce larger molecular separation in dimers. Tetraphenylboron anion with very large steric hindrance impedes the formation of dimers and thus results in non-fluorescent salt (PyPh4B). Meanwhile, this unique dimeric packing endows the crystal of PyNO3 with anisotropic fluorescence.

Abstract
An aggregation-enhanced emission active luminogen named as sodium 4,4'4″-(3,4-diphenyl-1H-pyrrole-1,2,5-triyl)tribenzoate (DP-TPPNa) with propeller construction was synthesized and developed as a "turn on" fluorescent probe for in situ quantitation of albumin in blood serum. The DP-TPPNa fluorescence intensity was linearly correlated with the concentration of two serum albumins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and human serum albumin (HSA), in pure PBS buffer in the ranges of 2.18-70 and 1.68-100 μg/mL, respectively. The detection limits were as low as 2.18 μg/mL for BSA and 1.68 μg/mL for HSA. The response time of fluorescence to serum albumin (SA) was very short (below 6 s), which achieved real-time detection. It also showed high selectivity to SA because other components in serum barely interfere with the detection of DP-TPPNa to SA, enabling in situ quantitative detection of SA without isolation from serum. DP-TPPNa was successfully applied for the quantitative detection of BSA in fetal bovine serum. The mechanism of fluorescent turn-on behavior was elucidated utilizing an unfolding process induced by guanidine hydrochloride, which revealed a capture process via selective hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding between luminogen and SA.
