Abstract
The simultaneous discrimination and detection of multiple anions in an aqueous solution has been a major challenge due to their structural similarity and low charge radii. In this study, we have constructed a supramolecular fluorescence sensor array based on three host-guest complexes to distinguish five anions (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, and ClO-) in an aqueous solution using anionic-induced fluorescence quenching combined with linear discriminant analysis. Due to the different affinities of the three host-guest complexes for each anion the anion quenching efficiency for each host-guest complex was likewise different, and the five anions were well recognized. The fluorescence sensor array not only distinguished anions at different concentrations (0.5, 10, and 50 µM) with 100% accuracy but also showed good linearity within a certain concentration range. The limit of detection (LOD) was < 0.5 µM. Our interference study showed that the developed sensor array had good anti-interference ability. The practicability of the developed sensor array was also verified by the identification and differentiation of toothpaste brands with different fluoride content and the prediction of the iodine concentration in urine combined with machine learning.

Abstract
Now that the chemistry of 1 : 1 host:guest complexes is well-established, it is surprising to note that higher stoichiometry (oligomeric) complexes, especially those with excess host, remain largely unexplored. Yet, proteins tend to oligomerize, affording new functions for cell machinery. Here, we show that cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) macrocycles combined with symmetric, linear di-viologens form unusual 3 : 2 host:guest complexes exhibiting remarkable dynamic properties, host self-sorting, and external ring-translocation. These results highlight the structural tunability of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) based 3 : 2 host:guest complexes in water and their responsiveness toward several stimuli (chemicals, pH, redox).

Abstract
Herein, a triphenylamine derivative (TP-3PY) possessing 4-(4-bromophenyl)pyridine (PY) as an electron-accepting group and tris[p-(4-pyridylvinyl)phenyl]amine (TPA) with large two-photon absorption cross-sections as an electron-donating group was obtained, and showed intense absorption in the visible light region (λmax = 509 nm) and weak near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission at 750 nm. After complexation with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), TP-3PY showed bright NIR fluorescence emission at 727 nm and phosphorescence emission at 800 nm. When the supramolecular assembly (TP-3PY⊂CB[8]) further interacted with dodecyl-modified sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SC4AD), the fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions were further enhanced at 710 and 734 nm, respectively. However, only the fluorescence emission of TP-3PY was enhanced in the presence of cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and SC4AD. More interestingly, the photoluminescence of TP-3PY⊂CB[8]@SC4AD and TP-3PY⊂CB[7]@SC4AD assemblies could be excited by both visible (510 nm) and NIR light (930 nm). Finally, these ternary supramolecular assemblies with bright NIR light emission were applied to lysosome imaging of tumor cells and real-time biological imaging of mice.

Abstract
The simultaneous detection of multiple quaternary ammonium pesticides (QAPs) in water is a challenge due to their high solubility in water and similar structures. In this paper, we have developed a quadruple-channel supramolecular fluorescence sensor array for the simultaneous analysis of five QAPs, including paraquat (PQ), diquat (DQ), difenzoquat (DFQ), mepiquat (MQ), and chlormequat (CQ). Not only were QAP samples of different concentrations (10, 50, and 300 μM) in water distinguished with 100% accuracy but also single QAP and binary QAP mixed samples (DFQ-DQ) were sensitively quantified. Our experimental interference study confirmed that the developed array has good anti-interference ability. The array can quickly identify five QAPs in river and tap water samples. In addition, it also qualitatively detected QAP residues in Chinese cabbage and wheat seedlings extract. This array has rich output signals, low cost, easy preparation, and simple technology, demonstrating great potential in environmental analysis.

Abstract
Confinement within molecular cages can dramatically modify the physicochemical properties of the encapsulated guest molecules, but such host-guest complexes have mainly been studied in a static context. Combining confinement effects with fast guest exchange kinetics could pave the way toward stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems-and ultimately materials-whose desired properties could be tailored "on demand" rapidly and reversibly. Here, we demonstrate rapid guest exchange between inclusion complexes of an open-window coordination cage that can simultaneously accommodate two guest molecules. Working with two types of guests, anthracene derivatives and BODIPY dyes, we show that the former can substantially modify the optical properties of the latter upon noncovalent heterodimer formation. We also studied the light-induced covalent dimerization of encapsulated anthracenes and found large effects of confinement on reaction rates. By coupling the photodimerization with the rapid guest exchange, we developed a new way to modulate fluorescence using external irradiation.

Abstract
Precise control over the stimuli-responsive noncovalent interactions operative in a complex molecular system has emerged as a convenient way to realize applications in the detection and sensing of trace analytes, metal ion separation, uptake-release, in situ nanoparticle synthesis, and catalytic activity. This feature article focuses on the attributes and advantages of noncovalent host-guest interactions involving cucurbituril homologues (CBs) with a wide range of organic and inorganic guests, starting from organic dyes to drugs, proteins, surfactants, metal ions, and polyoxometalates. The unique structural features of CBs provide interaction sites for cations at the portals, polyanions at the periphery, and hydrophobic groups in its cavity. The facile complexation and consequent compositional and geometrical arrangements of guests such as naphthalenediimides, coumarins, porphyrins, and triphenylpyrylium ions with the host CBs led to remarkable changes in many molecular properties, especially aggregation, the proton binding and release affinity, and novel emissive dimers, and each of such spectroscopic signatures have been appropriately channeled to drug delivery and activation to improve the antibacterial efficacy and shelf life of drugs by increasing their photostability. Several technological advantages have also been extracted from the interaction of CBs with inorganic guests as well. The interaction of CB7 with the heptamolybdate anion resulted in the precipitation of a hybrid complex material which enabled a convenient separation methodology for the use of clinically pure radioactive 99mTc in diagnostic applications. Certain cucurbituril-based hybrid materials have been developed for enhanced SO2 adsorption at low pressures, high-efficiency hydrogen production, and reversible catalytic systems. Thus, this feature article provides a glimpse of the vast potential of cucurbituril homologues with organic and inorganic guests and calls for a dedicated effort to explore supramolecular strategies for better sensors, therapeutics, smart drug delivery modules, and facile devices.

Abstract
Cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s or CB[n]s), as a classical of artificial organic macrocyclic hosts, were found to have excellent advantages in the fabricating of tunable and smart organic luminescent materials in aqueous media and the solid state with high emitting efficiency under the rigid pumpkin-shaped structure-derived macrocyclic-confinement effect in recent years. This review aims to give a systematically up-to-date overview of the Q[n]-based supramolecular organic luminescent emissions from the confined spaces triggered host-guest complexes, including the assembly fashions and the mechanisms of the macrocycle-based luminescent complexes, as well as their applications. Finally, challenges and outlook are provided. Since this class of Q[n]-based supramolecular organic luminescent emissions, which have essentially derived from the cavity-dependent confinement effect and the resulting assembly fashions, emerged only a few years ago, we hope this review will provide valuable information for the further development of macrocycle-based light-emitting materials and other related research fields.

Abstract
We show that the optical properties of indigo carmine can be modulated by encapsulation within a coordination cage. Depending on the host/guest molar ratio, the cage can predominantly encapsulate either one or two dye molecules. The 1 : 1 complex is fluorescent, unique for an indigo dye in an aqueous solution. We have also found that binding two dye molecules stabilizes a previously unknown conformation of the cage. We show that the optical properties of indigo carmine can be modulated by encapsulation within a coordination cage.![]()

Abstract
Ammonia borane (AB) is considered a potential "on-board" hydrogen storage material. However, its implementation as a hydrogen reservoir in fuel cells is lacking due to the extremely slow release of hydrogen at room-temperature hydrolysis. In this study, a metal-free supramolecular strategy is demonstrated at room temperature to increase the hydrolysis rate and yield of hydrogen along with significant reduction in ammonia release by using cucurbit[5/8]uril (CB5/CB8) nanocavitands as catalysts. The complex of AB with CB stabilizes the ammonium ion at the host portals, which reduces ammonia release and enhances hydrogen yield. The complexation brings down the activation energy of hydrolysis from 103.8 to ∼27.5 kJ mol-1 (for CB5), a value close to the Pt/Pd nanoparticle-based catalysts reported so far. The high catalytic performance and reusability of CB catalysts at very low concentration make AB a promising supramolecular alternative for a sustainable "on-board" energy source.

Abstract
By arranging substrates in a "reaction ready" state through noncovalent interactions, supramolecular nanoreactors/catalysts show high selectivity and/or rate acceleration features. Herein, we report the host-guest complexation of 9-(10-)substituted anthracene derivatives (G1-G3) with cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n], n = 8, 10), and the photoreactions of these derivatives in the presence of CB[n] hosts. Both CB[10] and CB[8] showed no obvious effects on the photoreaction of 9,10-disubstituted derivative G1. For G2 and G3, CB[10] operated as either a nanoreactor or catalyst (10%) for the photodimerization of two compounds with high selectivity and high yield. However, although CB[8] formed a 1 : 2 complex with G2, as also observed with CB[10], the photosolvolysis product (9-anthracenemethanol) was obtained quantitatively after photoirradiation of the CB[8]·2G2 complex. This unexpected photosolvolysis was rationalized by a plausible catalytic cycle in which anthracene acts as a photoremovable protecting group (PPG) and the carbonium ion intermediate is stabilized by CB[8].

Abstract
Cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) mediated assembly of extended aryl viologens (EVs) into optically tunable dimers is reported for the first time.
Cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) mediated assembly of extended aryl viologens (EVs) into optically tunable dimers is reported for the first time. We show that the modular design and synthesis of a new class of π-conjugated viologen derivatives with rigid aromatic or heteroaromatic bridging units as well as electron donating molecular recognition motifs enable their self-assembly into 2 : 2 complexes with CB[8]. The quantitative dimerization process involving these two molecular components in an aqueous solution enables excimer-like interactions between closely packed charged guests giving rise to distinct spectroscopic behavior. The nature of these dimers (CB[8]2·(EV[X]R)2) in the ground and excited states was characterized by NMR, isothermal titration calorimetry, and steady-state spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract
A viologen derivative carrying a benzimidazole group (V-P-I 2+ ; viologen-phenylene-imidazole V-P-I) can be dimerized in water using cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) in the form of a 2:2 complex resulting in a negative shift of the guest pKa , by more than 1 pH unit, contrasting with the positive pKa shift usually observed for CB-based complexes. Whereas 2:2 complex protonation is unclear by NMR, silver cations have been used for probing the accessibility of the imidazole groups of the 2:2 complexes. The protonation capacity of the buried imidazole groups is reduced, suggesting that CB[8] could trigger proton release upon 2:2 complex formation. The addition of CB[8] to a solution containing V-P- I3+ indeed released protons as monitored by pH-metry and visualized by a coloured indicator. This property was used to induce a host/guest swapping, accompanied by a proton transfer, between V-P-I 3+ ⋅CB[7] and a CB[8] complex of 1-methyl-4-(4-pyridyl)pyridinium. The origin of this negative pKa shift is proposed to stand in an ideal charge state, and in the position of the two pH-responsive fragments inside the two CB[8] which, alike residues engulfed in proteins, favour the deprotonated form of the guest molecules. Such proton release triggered by a recognition event is reminiscent of several biological processes and may open new avenues toward bioinspired enzyme mimics catalyzing proton transfer or chemical reactions.

A Supramolecular Approach for Enhanced Antibacterial Activity and Extended Shelf-life of Fluoroquinolone Drugs with Cucurbit[7]uril. Sci Rep 2018; 8:13925. Abstract
The host-guest interactions of a third-generation fluoroquinone, danofloxacin (DOFL), with the macrocyclic host cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) have been investigated at different pH values (~3.5, 7.5, and 10). The photophysical properties have been positively affected, that is, the fluorescence yield and lifetime increased, as well as the photostability of DOFL improved in the presence of CB7. The antibacterial activity of DOFL is enhanced in the presence of CB7, as tested against four pathogenic bacteria; highest activity has been found towards B. cereus and E. coli, and lower activity towards S. aureus and S. typhi. The antibacterial activity of two additional second-generation fluoroquinones, i.e., norfloxacin and ofloxacin, has also been investigated in the absence as well as the presence of CB7 and compared with that of DOFL. In case of all drugs, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was reduced 3–5 fold in the presence of CB7. The extended shelf-life (antibacterial activity over time) of the fluoroquinone drugs in the presence of CB7, irrespective of four types of bacteria, can be attributed to the enhanced photostability of their CB7 complexes, which can act as better antibiotics with a longer expiry date than uncomplexed DOFL.
