Syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of two CoII/NiII isostructural coordination polymers based on an asymmetric semirigid tricarboxylate ligand

Two new isostructural complexes, namely, poly[aqua[μ₃-2-(4-carboxyphenoxy)terephthalato-κ³O¹:O⁴:O^4'](1,10-phenanthroline-κ²N,N')cobalt(II)], [Co(C₁₅H₈O₇)(C₁₂H₈N₂)(H₂O)]_n or [Co(μ₃-Hcpota)(phen)(H₂O)]_n, I, and poly[aqua[μ₃-2-(4-carboxyphenoxy)terephthalato-κ³O¹:O⁴:O^4'](1,10-phenanthroline-κ²N,N')nickel(II)], [Ni(C₁₅H₈O₇)(C₁₂H₈N₂)(H₂O)]_n or [Ni(μ₃-Hcpota)(phen)(H₂O)]_n, II, have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. Complexes I and II were fully characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analyses, and powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. They both present two-dimensional structures based on [M₂(μ-COO)₂]²⁺ (M = Co^II or Ni^II) dinuclear metal units with a fes topology and a vertex symbol (4·8²). Interestingly, the positions of the two dimeric metal motifs and the two partially deprotonated Hcpota^2- ligands reproduce regular flying butterfly arrangements flipped upside down and sharing wings in the ab plane. Magnetic studies indicate antiferromagnetic interactions (J = -5.21 cm^-1 for I and -11.53 cm^-1 for II) in the dimeric units, with Co...Co and Ni...Ni distances of 4.397 (1) and 4.358 (1) Å, respectively, that are related to double syn-anti carboxylate bridges.

Construction of functional coordination polymers derived from designed flexible bis(4-carboxybenzyl)amine

A series of coordination polymers (CPs) have been constructed from bis(4-carboxybenzyl)amine and a series of bis(imidazole) linkers. Luminescence sensing measurements indicate that two zinc-based CPs both show highly selective and sensitive sensing for acetone and Cr₂O₇²⁻/CrO₄²⁻.

Long-range magnetic ordering in a metal-organic framework based on octanuclear nickel(ii) clusters

A novel three-dimensional metal-organic framework [Ni₃(BTC)₂(bpp)₂(H₂O)]·3H₂O (1) based on mixed ligands H₃BTC (1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid) and bpp (1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane) was obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Crystal structure analysis reveals that 1 is a framework based on cage-like Ni₈(COO)₁₂ units. Furthermore, long-range magnetic ordering is observed at low temperature.

A two-dimensional copper(II) coordination polymer based on 2,4′-oxybis(benzoate) and 4,4′-bipyridine

The reaction of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O with 2,4′-oxybis(benzoic acid) and 4,4′-bipyridine under hydrothermal conditions produced a new mixed-ligand two-dimensional copper(II) coordination polymer, namely poly[[(μ-4,4′-bipyridine-κ2 N,N′)[μ-2,4′-oxybis(benzoato)-κ4 O 2,O 2′:O 4,O 4′]copper(II)] monohydrate], {[Cu(C14H8O5)(C10H8N2)]·H2O} n , which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray diffraction crystal structure analysis reveals that the CuII ions are connected to form a two-dimensional wave-like network through 4,4′-bipyridine and 2,4′-oxybis(benzoate) ligands. The two-dimensional layers are expanded into a three-dimensional supramolecular structure through intermolecular O—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that the complex shows weak antiferromagnetic interactions between adjacent CuII ions.
