Abstract
In this contribution, a terpyridine-based ligand bearing a thioether functionality is used to prepare a new cobalt(II) spin crossover complex: [Co(TerpyPhSMe)2](PF6)2 (1), where TerpyPhSMe is 4'-(4-methylthiophenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine. Its structure, determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, reveals a mer coordination of the tridentate terpyridine ligands, leading to a tetragonally compressed octahedron. Intermolecular interactions in the crystal lattice freeze the complex in the high spin state in the solid state at all temperatures, as indicated by magnetometry and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra. When dissolved in acetonitrile, however, temperature dependent electronic, 1H-NMR and EPR spectra highlight an entropy-driven spin crossover transition, whose thermodynamics parameters have been determined. This is the first report of a cobalt(II) SCO complex featuring a thioether group, allowing its implementation in chemically grown bistable monolayers and may open important perspectives for the use of such systems in molecular spintronics.

Abstract
Molecular assembly induced by metal-terpyridine-based coordinative interactions has become an emergent research topic due to its ease of synthesis and diverse applications. This article highlights recent significant developments in the metal-terpyridine-based supramolecular architectures. At first, the design aspect of the molecular building blocks has been described, followed by elaboration on how the ligand backbone plays an important role for achieving different dimensionalities of the resulting assemblies which exhibit a wide range of potential applications. After that, we discussed different synthetic approaches for constructing these assemblies, and finally, we focused on their significant developments in three specific areas, viz., electrochromic materials, catalysis and a new application in wastewater treatment. In the field of electrochromic materials, these assemblies made important advancements in various aspects like sub-second switching time (<1 s), low switching voltage (<1 V), increased switching stability (>10000 cycles), tuning of multiple colors by using multimetallic systems, fabrication of charge storing electrochromic devices, utilizing and storing solar energy etc. Similarly, the catalysis field witnessed application of the metal-terpyridine assemblies in C-H monohalogenation, heterogeneous Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, photocatalysis, reduction of carbon dioxide, etc. Finally, the environmental application of these coordination assemblies includes capturing Cr(VI) from waste water efficiently with high capture capacity, good recyclability, wide pH independency etc.

Abstract
The tetratopic 1,4-bis(2-phenylethoxy)-2,5-bis(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (1) and 1,4-bis(3-phenylpropoxy)-2,5-bis(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (2) ligands have been prepared and fully characterised. Combination of ligand 1 or 2 and [M(hfacac)2]·xH2O (M = Cu, x = 1; M = Zn, x = 2) under conditions of crystal growth by layering led to the formation of [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)] n ·3.6n(1,2-Cl2C6H4)·2nCHCl3, [Zn2(hfacac)4(1)] n ·nMeC6H5·1.8nCHCl3, [Cu2(hfacac)4(2)] n ·nMeC6H5·2nH2O, [Cu2(hfacac)4(2)] n ·2.8nC6H5Cl and [Cu2(hfacac)4(2)] n ·2n(1,2-Cl2C6H4)·0.4nCHCl3·0.5nH2O. For each compound, single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed the assembly of a planar (4,4)-net in which the tetratopic ligands 1 or 2 define the nodes. The metal centres link two different bis(3,2':6',3''-tpy) ligands via the outer pyridine rings; whereas copper(ii) has N-donors in a trans-arrangement, zinc(ii) has them in cis. This difference between the copper(ii) and zinc(ii) coordination polymers modifies the architecture of the assembly without changing the underlying (4,4)-network.

Abstract
The hexatopic ligands 1,3,5-tris(4,2':6',4''-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (1), 1,3,5-tris(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (2), 1,3,5-tris{4-(4,2':6',4''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (3), 1,3,5-tris{4-(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (4) and 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris{4-(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (5) have been prepared and characterized. The single crystal structure of 1·1.75DMF was determined; 1 exhibits a propeller-shaped geometry with each of the three 4,2':6',4''-tpy domains being crystallographically independent. Packing of molecules of 1 is dominated by face-to-face π-stacking interactions which is consistent with the low solubility of 1 in common organic solvents. Reaction of 5 with [Cu(hfacac)2]·H2O (Hhfacac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione) under conditions of crystal growth by layering resulted in the formation of [Cu3(hfacac)6(5)] n ·2.8nC7H8·0.4nCHCl3. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals an unusual 1D-coordination polymer consisting of a series of alternating single and double loops. Each of the three crystallographically independent Cu atoms is octahedrally sited with cis-arrangements two N-donors from two different ligands 1 and, therefore, cis-arrangements of coordinated [hfacac]- ligands; this observation is unusual among compounds in the Cambridge Structural Database containing {Cu(hfacac)2N2} coordination units in which the two N-donors are in a non-chelating ligand.

Abstract
Mononuclear rare-earth tris-β-diketonato complexes RE(tta)3dme [RE = Y (1), La (2), Dy (3), or Eu (4); Htta = 2-thenoylacetone; dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane] react cleanly at room temperature in a 1:1 molar ratio with the heteroditopic divergent ligand 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine N-oxide (pyterpyNO) to yield RE2(tta)6(pyterpyNO)n, where n = 2 for RE = Y (5), Dy (6), or Eu (7) and n = 3 for RE = La (8). The crystal structure of 5 revealed a dinuclear compound with two pyterpyNO's bridging through the oxygen atom in a hypodentate mode leaving the terpyridine moieties uncoordinated. Using a metal:pyterpyNO molar ratio of 2 for RE = Y (9), Dy (10), or Eu (11), it was possible to isolate the molecular complexes RE4(tta)12(pyterpyNO)2, while using a 5:3 molar ratio, the product La5(tta)12(pyterpyNO)3 (12) can be obtained. 89Y nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed two different yttrium centers at room temperature for 9. An X-ray diffraction study of 10 showed a symmetrical tetranuclear structure resulting from the coordination of two Dy(tta)3 fragments to the two hypodentate terpyridines of the dinuclear unit and presenting two different coordination sites for metals with coordination numbers of 8 and 9. Magnetic studies of 6 and 10 revealed the presence of an antiferromagnetic interaction between the two Dy(III) atoms bound by the NO bridges. These compounds displayed a slow relaxing magnetization through Orbach (6) and Raman (10) processes in the absence of an applied magnetic field; the rate increased upon application of a 1 kOe field. 7 and 11 showed a bright red emission typical of Eu3+. The two complexes have similar emission properties mainly determined by the employed β-diketonato ligands.

Abstract
The isomers 4′-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (1), 4′-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (2), 4′-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine (3), and 4′-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine (4) have been prepared and characterized. The single crystal structures of 1 and 2 were determined. The 1D-polymers [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)2]n·2nC6H4Cl2 (Hhfacac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione), [Cu(hfacac)2(2)]n·2nC6H5Me, [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2, [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H5Cl, and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl have been formed by reactions of 1, 2, 3 and 4 with [Cu(hfacac)2]·H2O under conditions of crystal growth by layering and four of these coordination polymers have been formed on a preparative scale. [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)2]n·2nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(2)]n·2nC6H5Me are zig-zag chains and the different substitution position of the CF3 group in 1 and 2 does not affect this motif. Packing of the polymer chains is governed mainly by C–F...F–C contacts, and there are no inter-polymer π-stacking interactions. The conformation of the 3,2′:6′,3″-tpy unit in [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl differs, leading to different structural motifs in the 1D-polymer backbones. In [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl, the peripheral 3-CF3C6H4 unit is accommodated in a pocket between two {Cu(hfacac)2} units and engages in four C–Hphenyl...F–Chfacac contacts which lock the phenylpyridine unit in a near planar conformation. In [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl, π-stacking interactions between 4′-trifluoromethylphenyl-3,2′:6′,3″-tpy domains are key packing interactions, and this contrasts with the packing of polymers incorporating 1 and 2. We use powder X-ray diffraction to demonstrate that the assemblies of the coordination polymers are reproducible, and that a switch from a 4,2′:6′,4″- to 3,2′:6′,3″-tpy metal-binding unit is accompanied by a change from dominant C–F...F–C and C–F...H–C contacts to π-stacking of arene domains between ligands 3 or 4.

Abstract
Design, synthesis, and applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the most salient fields of research in modern inorganic and materials chemistry. As the structure and physical properties of MOFs are mostly dependent on the organic linkers or ligands, the choice of ligand system is of utmost importance in the design of MOFs. One such crucial organic linker/ligand is terpyridine (tpy), which can adopt various coordination modes to generate an enormous number of metal-organic frameworks. These frameworks generally carry physicochemical characteristics induced by the π-electron-rich (basically N-electron-rich moiety) terpyridines. In this minireview, the construction of 3D MOFs associated with symmetrical terpyridines is discussed. These ligands can be easily derivatized at the lateral phenyl (4'-phenyl) position and incorporate additional organic functionalities. These functionalities lead to some different binding modes and form higher dimensional (3D) frameworks. Therefore, these 3D MOFs can carry multiple features along with the characteristics of terpyridines. Some properties of these MOFs, like photophysical, chemical selectivity, photocatalytic degradation, proton conductivity, and magnetism, etc. have also been discussed and correlated with their frameworks.

Abstract
The first 4,2':6',4''-terpyridine (4,2':6',4''-tpy) containing coordination polymer was reported over 20 years ago and in the last decade, there has been increased interest in the use of ditopic 4,2':6',4''-tpy ligands as linkers in coordination polymers and 2D-networks. Functionalization in the 4'-position of 4,2':6',4''-tpy is synthetically straightforward, giving access to a large suite of building blocks. Less well explored is the coordination chemistry of 3,2':6',3''-tpy ligands which exhibit greater conformational flexibility than 4,2':6',4''-tpy. One approach to making the transition from 2D- to 3D-networks is to utilize tetratopic bis(4,2':6',4''-tpy) and bis(3,2':6',3''-tpy) ligands which act as 4-connecting nodes. In this highlight, we survey recent progress towards a better understanding of the design principles associated with the use of ditopic and tetratopic 4,2':6',4''-tpy and 3,2':6',3''-tpy containing ligands and their roles both as linkers and nodes in coordination assemblies.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of the isomers rac-4'-(4-butan-2-yloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (rac-2), 4'-(2-methylpropoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (3) and 4'-(tert-butoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (4) are reported. The compounds react with Co(NCS)2 under conditions of crystal growth at room temperature to give single crystals of [{Co(rac-2)2(NCS)2}·CHCl3]n, [Co(3)2(NCS)2]n and [{Co(4)2(NCS)2}·CHCl3]n which possess (4,4) networks, with the Co centers acting as 4-connecting nodes. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) was used to confirm that the crystals chosen for single crystal X-ray diffraction were representative of the bulk samples. The detailed structures of the three networks have been compared with that of the previously reported [{Co(1)2(NCS)2}·4CHCl3]n in which 1 is 4'-(butoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine. Whereas the switch from 1 with the straight-chain butoxy substituent to rac-2, 3 and 4 with branched chains causes significant structural perturbation, changes in the spatial properties of the branched substituents are accommodated with subtle conformational changes in the 3,2':6',3″-tpy domain.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of 4'-(4-n-octyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (8) and 4'-(4-n-nonyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (9) are reported. The single crystal structures of 4'-(4-n-hexyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (6), 4'-(4-n-heptyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (7), and compounds 8 and 9 have been determined. The conformation of the 3,2':6',3″-tpy unit is trans, trans in 6 and 7, but switches to cis, trans in 8 and 9. This is associated with significant changes in the packing interactions with a more dominant role for van der Waals interactions between adjacent n-alkyloxy chains and C-Hmethylene... π interactions in 8 and 9. The solid-state structures of 6 and 7 with the n-hexyloxy and n-heptyloxy chains feature interwoven sheets of supramolecular assemblies of molecules, with pairs of n-alkyloxy chains threaded through cavities in an adjacent sheet.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of 4'-(4-n-propoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine is described. Five 2D-coordination networks have been isolated by crystal growth at room temperature from reactions of Co(NCS)2 with 4'-(4-n-alkyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridines in which the n-alkyl group is ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n-pentyl and n-hexyl in ligands 2-6, respectively. The single-crystal structures of [{Co(2)2(NCS)2}.0.6CHCl3]n, [{Co(3)2(NCS)2}.4CHCl3.0.25H2O]n, [{Co(4)2(NCS)2}.4CHCl3]n, [Co2(5)4(NCS)4]n and [Co(6)2(NCS)2]n have been determined, and powder X-ray diffraction has demonstrated that the single-crystal structures are representative of the bulk materials. Each compound possesses a (4,4) net with Co centres as 4-connecting nodes. For the assemblies containing 2, 3 and 4, the (4,4) net comprises two geometrically different rhombuses, and the nets pack in an ABAB... arrangement with cone-like arrangements of n-alkyloxyphenyl groups being accommodated in a similar unit in an adjacent net. An increase in the n-alkyloxy chain length has two consequences: there is a change in the conformation of the 3,2':6',3″-tpy metal-binding domain, and the (4,4) net comprises identical rhombuses. Similarities and differences between the assemblies with ligands 2-6 and the previously reported [{Co(1)2(NCS)2}.3MeOH]n and [{Co(1)2(NCS)2}.2.2CHCl3]n in which 1 is 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine are discussed. The results demonstrate the effects of combining a variable chain length in the 4'-(4-n-alkyloxyphenyl) substituents of 3,2':6',3″-tpy and a conformationally flexible 3,2':6',3″-tpy metal-binding domain.

Abstract
Five coordination polymers formed from combinations of copper(II) acetate and 4'-(4-alkyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3''-terpyridines with methoxy (1), n-butoxy (2), n-pentyloxy (3) and n-heptyloxy (4) substituents are reported. Reaction of 1 with Cu(OAc)2∙H2O leads to the 1D-polymer [Cu2(μ-OAc)4(1)]n in which {Cu2(-OAc)4} paddle-wheel units are connected by ligands 1, or [{Cu4(μ3-OH)2(μ-OAc)2(μ3-OAc)2(AcO-κO)2(1)2}.2MeOH]n in which centrosymmetric tetranuclear clusters link pairs of ligands 1 to give a double-stranded 1D-polymer. Layering solutions of Cu(OAc)2∙H2O (in MeOH) over 2, 3 or 4 (in CHCl3) leads to the assembly of the 1D-polymers [2{Cu2(μ-OAc)4(2)}.1.25MeOH]n, [Cu2(μ-OAc)4(3)]n and [{Cu2(μ-OAc)4(4)}.0.2CHCl3]n. In all compounds, the 3,2':6',3''-tpy unit coordinates only through the outer pyridine rings, but the conformation of the 3,2':6',3''-tpy responds to changes in the length of the alkyloxy tails leading to changes in the conformation of the polymer backbone and in the packing of the chains in the crystal lattice in the chains featuring {Cu2(-OAc)4} paddle-wheel linkers.

Abstract
The structures of a new hybrid terpyridine-pyrazine ligand, namely 4'-[4-(pyrazin-2-yl)phenyl]-4,2':6',4''-terpyridine (L2), C25H17N5, and its one-dimensional coordination polymer catena-poly[[bis(acetylacetonato-κ2O,O')zinc]-μ-4'-[4-(pyrazin-2-yl-κN4)phenyl]-4,2':6',4''-terpyridine-κN1], [Zn(C5H7O2)2(C25H17N5)]n or [Zn(acac)2(L2)]n (Hacac is acetylacetone), are reported. Packing interactions in both crystal structures are analyzed using Hirshfeld surface and enrichment ratio techniques. For the simpler structure of the monomeric ligand, further studies on the interaction hierarchy using the energy framework approach were made. The result was a complete picture of the intermolecular interaction landscape, which revealed some subtle details, for example, that some weak (at first sight negligible) C-H...N interactions in the structure of free L2 play a relevant role in the crystal stabilization.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (2) (IUPAC PIN 24-(4-methoxyphenyl)-12,22:26,32-terpyridine) are described, and its coordination behaviour with cobalt(II) thiocyanate has been investigated. In a series of experiments, crystals were grown at room temperature by layering a MeOH solution of Co(NCS)2 over a CHCl3 solution of 2 using 1:1, 1:2 or 2:1 molar ratios of metal salt-to-ligand. Crystals harvested within 2-3 weeks proved to be the 1D-coordination polymer [Co(2)(NCS)2(MeOH)2]n and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) confirmed that the crystals selected for single-crystal X-ray diffraction were representative of the bulk samples. Longer crystallization times with a Co(NCS)2 to 2 molar ratio of 1:1 yielded crystals of [Co(2)(NCS)2(MeOH)2]n (1D-chain) and the pseudopolymorphs [{Co(2)2(NCS)2}·3MeOH]n and [{Co(2)2(NCS)2}·2.2CHCl3]n ((4,4)-nets), each type of crystal originating from a different zone in the crystallization tube. PXRD for this last experiment confirmed that the dominant product in the bulk sample was the 1D-coordination polymer.

Abstract
The preparation of 24-functionalized 12,22:26,32-terpyridines (4'-functionalized 3,2:6',3''-terpyridines) by the reaction of three 4-alkoxybenzaldehydes with 3-acetylpyridine and ammonia was investigated; under identical reaction conditions, two (R = nC4H9, C2H5) gave the expected products whereas a third (R = nC3H7) gave only a cyclohexanol derivative derived from the condensation of three molecules of 3-acetylpyridine with two of 4-(n-propoxy)benzaldehyde. A comprehensive survey of ''unexpected'' products from reactions of ArCOCH3 derivatives with aromatic aldehydes is presented. Three different types of alternative product are identified.

Abstract
The syntheses and characterizations of three new ligands containing two 4,2':6',4″-tpy or two 3,2':6',3″-tpy metal-binding domains are reported. The ligands possess different alkyloxy functionalities attached to the central phenylene spacer: n-pentyloxy in 3, 4-phenyl-n-butoxy in 4, benzyloxy in 5. Crystal growth under ambient conditions has led to the formation of {[Co(NCS)₂(3)]·0.8C₆H₄Cl₂}n and {[Co(NCS)₂(4)]·1.6H₂O·1.2C₆H₄Cl₂}n, with structures confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Both the cobalt(II) center and ligand 3 or 4 act as 4-connecting nodes and both {[Co(NCS)₂(3)]·0.8C₆H₄Cl₂}n and {[Co(NCS)₂(4)]·1.6H₂O·1.2C₆H₄Cl₂}n possess a 3D cds net despite the fact that 3 and 4 contain two 4,2':6',4″-tpy and two 3,2':6',3″-tpy units, respectively. Taken in conjunction with previously reported data, the results indicate that the role of the alkyloxy substituent is more significant than the choice of 4,2':6',4″- or 3,2':6',3″-tpy isomer in determining the assembly of a particular 3D net. The combination of Co(NCS)₂ with 5 resulted in the formation of the discrete molecular complex [Co(NCS)₂(MeOH)₂(5)₂]·2CHCl₃·2MeOH in which 5 acts as a monodentate ligand. The pendant phenyls and both coordinated and non-coordinated 4,2':6',4″-tpy units are involved in efficient π-stacking interactions.

Abstract
Catalytic hydroboration of ketones with pinacolborane was achieved with a 2D iron(ii) coordination polymer (CP) of a divergent 4,2';6',4''-terpyridine (tpy) derivative under mild conditions with high efficiency. This solid iron catalyst system is more active towards the hydroboration of ketones than that of aldehydes, displaying a different trend of reactivity from known homogeneous iron hydroboration catalysts.

Abstract
Four novel ZnII coordination polymers, [(ZnCl₂)₂(L)₂]n (1), [(ZnBr₂)₂(L)₂]n (2), and [(ZnI₂)₂(L)₂]n (3) and {[Zn(SCN)₂]1.5(L)₃}n (4), have been synthesized based on 4'-ferrocenyl-3,2':6',3''-terpyridine with ZnII ions and different coordination anions under similar ambient conditions. Their structures have been confirmed using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, showing that complexes 1-3 are one-dimensional (1D) double-stranded metal ion helical polymer chains and complex 4 is of a two-dimensional (2D) network. The structural transformations of them from a 1D polymer chain to a 2D network under the influence of the coordination anions has been systematic investigated. Furthermore, the optical band gaps have been measured by optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, revealing that the ligand and the complexes should have semiconductor properties.

Abstract
In this report we describe the synthesis of a new phenanthroline ligand, 2,9-di(2,4,6-tri-isopropyl-phenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (bL2) and its use as the blocking ligand in the preparation of two new heteroleptic Cu(i)diimine complexes. Analysis of the CuHETPHEN single crystal structures shows a distinct distortion from an ideal tetrahedral geometry around the Cu(i) center, forced by the secondary phenanthroline ligand rotating to accommodate the isopropyl groups of bL2. The increased steric bulk of bL2 as compared to the more commonly used 2,9-dimesityl-1,10-phenanthroline blocking ligand prohibits intramolecular ligand-ligand interaction, which is unique among CuHETPHEN complexes. The ground state optical and redox properties of CuHETPHEN complexes are responsive to the substitution on the blocking ligand even though the differences in structure are far removed from the Cu(i) center. Transient optical spectroscopy was used to understand the excited state kinetics in both coordinating and non-coordinating solvents following visible excitation. Substitution of the blocking phenanthroline ligand has a significant impact on the 3MLCT decay and can be used to increase the excited state lifetime by 50%. Electronic structure calculations established relationships between ground and excited state properties, and general entatic state concepts are discussed for copper photosensitizers. This work contributes to the growing library of CuHETPHEN complexes and broadens the fundamental understanding of their ground and excited state properties.

Abstract
A comparative investigation of the coordination assemblies formed between Co(NCS)₂ and two monotopic 4,2':6',4''-terpyridine (4,2':6',4"-tpy) ligands or two related ditopic ligands is reported. Crystals were grown by layering MeOH solutions of Co(NCS)₂ over a CHCl₃ or 1,2-C₆H₄Cl₂ solution of the respective ligand at room temperature. With 4'-(2-methylpyrimidin-5-yl)-4,2':6',4"-terpyridine (6), the 1D-coordination polymer {[Co₂(NCS)₄(MeOH)₄(6)₂]∙2MeOH∙8H₂O}n assembles with 6 coordinating only through the outer N-donors of the 4,2':6',4"-tpy unit; coordination by the MeOH solvent blocks two cobalt coordination sites preventing propagation in a higher-dimensional network. A combination of Co(NCS)₂ and 1-(4,2':6',4"-terpyridin-4'-yl)ferrocene (7) leads to {[Co(NCS)₂(7)₂]∙4CHCl₃}n which contains a (4,4) net; the 2D-sheets associate through π-stacking interactions between ferrocenyl and pyridyl units. A 3D-framework is achieved through use of the ditopic ligand 1,4-bis(npropoxy)-2,5-bis(4,2':6',4"-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (8) which acts as a 4-connecting node in {[Co(NCS)₂(8)₂].2C₆H₄Cl₂}n; the combination of metal and ligand planar 4-connecting nodes results in a {6⁵.8} cds net. For a comparison with the coordinating abilities of the previously reported 1,4-bis(noctoxy)-2,5-bis(4,2':6',4"-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (3), a more flexible analogue 9 was prepared. {[Co(NCS)₂(9)]∙2CHCl₃}n contains a (4,4) net defined by both metal and ligand planar 4-connecting nodes. The noctoxy tails of 9 protrude from each side of the (4,4) net and thread through adjacent sheets; the arene-attached noctoxy chains associate through a combination of van der Waals and C-H...π interactions.

Abstract
The reaction of 1-(4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridin-4′-yl)ferrocene (2) with ZnI2 leads to [{ZnI2(2)}4·1.4MeOH·0.8H2O] which contains a discrete [4+4] metallocycle. Crystal growth experiments demonstrate that reactions of 2 with Zn(OAc)2 or CuCl2 result in the formation of single- or double-stranded 1D polymer chains, respectively, the latter facilitated by the formation of {Cu2Cl4} dinuclear nodes. While both 2 and its isomer 1-(3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridin-4′-yl)ferrocene (3) present V-shaped donor sets, rotation about interannular bonds in 3 generates flexible vectorial properties associated with limiting convergent and divergent orientations of the nitrogen donors. The synthesis and characterisation of 3 are described as are reactions of 3 with ZnCl2 or ZnBr2 which lead, respectively, to a metallosquare in [{ZnCl2(3)}4·3CHCl3·3MeOH] or a helical polymer in [{ZnBr2(3)}·MeOH]n. The tight pitch of the helix in the latter (8.7879(9) Å) is controlled by a combination of the orientations of the N,N″-donor sets in 3, and intra-chain π-stacking interactions involving ferrocenyl and pyridine units.
