Abstract
The mesomorphic behavior and the miscibility properties of binary mixtures of a new series of Schiff base metallomesogen (MOM) are evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), elemental analysis (CHNX), Fourier−transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to certify the molecular structure of the compounds. The results revealed that the studied mixtures are completely miscible throughout the composition field and exhibit a nematic phase which covered the whole composition range. In the mixtures, the stability of the nematic phase varies continuously, and it is possible to highlight the presence of a eutectic composition with a wide mesogenic stability range.

Abstract
Platinum(IV) complexes are extensively studied for their activity against cancer cells as potential substitutes for the widely used platinum(II) drugs. PtIV complexes are kinetically inert and need to be reduced to PtII species to play their pharmacological action, thus acting as prodrugs. The mechanism of the reduction step inside the cell is however still largely unknown. Gas-phase activation of deprotonated platinum(IV) prodrugs was found to generate products in which platinum has a formal +3 oxidation state. IR multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy is thus used to obtain structural information helping to define the nature of both the platinum atom and the ligands. In particular, comparison of calculations at DFT, MP2 and CCSD levels with experimental results demonstrates that the localization of the radical is about equally shared between the dxz orbital of platinum and the pz of nitrogen on the amino group, the latter acting as a non-innocent ligand.

Abstract
The role of Hartree-Fock exchange in describing the structural changes occurring upon reduction of bipyridine-based ligands and their complexes is investigated within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A set of four free ligands in their neutral and radical anionic forms, and two of their zinc complexes in their dicationic and monocationic radical forms, is used to compare a large panel of pure, conventional, and long-range corrected hybrid DFT functionals; coupled cluster single and double calculations are used alongside experimental results as benchmarks. Particular attention has been devoted to the magnitude of the change, upon reduction, of the Δ-parameter, which measures the difference between the Cpy-Cpy and the C-N bond lengths in bipyridine ligand and is known to experimentally correlate with the charge of the ligands. Our results indicate that the structural changes significantly depend on the amount of exact exchange included in the functional. A progressive evolution is observed for the free ligands, whereas two distinct sets of results are obtained for the complexes. Functionals with a small degree of HF exchange, e.g., B3LYP, do not adequately describe geometric changes for the considered species, and, quite surprisingly, the same holds for the CC2 method. The best agreement to experimental and CCSD values is obtained with functionals that include a significant but not excessive part of exact exchange, e.g., CAM-B3LYP, M06-2X, and ωB97X-D. The calculated localization of the added electron after reduction, which depends on the self-interaction error, is used to rationalize these outcomes. Static correlation is also shown to play a role in the accurate description of the electronic structure.

Abstract
Abstract
The primary intermediates resulting from the interaction of cisplatin, cis-(PtCl2(NH3)2], most widespread antitumor drug, with biomolecular targets are characterized. Electrospray ionization is used to deliver ions formed in solution into the gas phase where they are structurally interrogated by vibrational “action” spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. The aquation products, cis-[PtX(NH3)2(H2O)]+ (X = Cl, OH), lying along the path responsible for biological activity, are shown to display distinctive features responding to ligation pattern and optimized geometry. The IR spectra of trans-[PtX(NH3)2(H2O)]+ are different, testifying that cis and trans complexes are stable, non interconverting species both in solution and in the gas phase. Ligand substitution by simple nucleophiles (L = pyridine, 4(5)-methylimidazole, thioanisole, trimethylphosphate, acetamide, dimethylacetamide, urea and thiourea) yields cis-[PtCl(NH3)2(L)]+ complexes displaying remarkable regioselectivity whenever L presents multiple candidate platination sites. The incipient formation of cisplatin-derived complexes with the recognized biological amino acid targets L-histidine (His) and L-methionine (Met) has been investigated revealing the primary platination event to be mainly directed at the Nπ atom of the imidazole side chain of His and to the thiomethyl sulfur of Met. The isomer and conformer population of the ensuing cis-[PtCl(NH3)2(Met/His)]+ complexes, sampled in the gas phase, can be ascertained by photofragmentation kinetics on isomer/conformer specific resonances.

Abstract
Infrared photodissociation analyses are supported by theoretical calculations that allow a trustworthy interpretation of experimental spectra of gaseous ions. B3LYP calculations are the most prominent method used to model IR spectra, as detailed in our bibliographic survey. However, this and other commonly used methods are known to provide inaccurate energy values and geometries, especially when it comes to long-range interactions, such as intramolecular H-bonds, which show increased anharmonicity. Therefore, we evaluated some of the most commonly used density functional theory methods (B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, and M06-2X) and basis sets (6-31+G(d,p), 6-311++G(d,p), 6-311++G(3df,2pd), aug-cc-pVDZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ), including anharmonicity and dispersion corrections. The results were compared to MP2 calculations and to experimental high-frequency (2000-4000 cm-1) IR multiphotonic dissociation (IRMPD) spectra of two protonated model molecules containing intramolecular hydrogen bonds: biotin and tryptophan. M06-2X/6-31+G(d,p) was shown to be the most cost-effective level of theory, whereas CAM-B3LYP was the most efficient method to describe the van der Waals interactions. The use of the dispersion correction D3, proposed by Grimme, improved the description of O-H vibrations involved in H-bonding but worsened the description of N-H stretches. Anharmonic calculations were shown to be extremely expensive when compared to other approaches. The efficiencies of well-established scaling factors (SFs) in opposition to sample-dependent SFs were also discussed and the use of fitted SFs were shown to be the most cost-effective approach to predict IRMPD spectra. M06-2X/6-31+G(d,p) and CAM-B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ were also tested against the fingerprint region. Our results suggest that these methods can also be used for analysis in this lower frequency range and should be regarded as the methods of choice for cost-effective IRMPD simulations rather than the ubiquitous B3LYP method, especially when further molecular properties are needed.
