Coordination of the Co2+ and Ni2+ Ions in Tf2N- Based Ionic Liquids: A Combined X-ray Absorption and Molecular Dynamics Study

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) have been combined to study the coordination of the Co2+ and Ni2+ ions in ionic liquids (ILs) based on the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Tf2N]-) anion and having different organic cations, namely, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium ([C4mim]+), 1,8-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)octane ([C8(mim)2]2+), N,N,N-trimethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium ([choline]+), and butyltrimethylammonium ([BTMA]+). Co and Ni K-edge XAS data have been collected on 0.1 mol L-1 Co(Tf2N)2 and Ni(Tf2N)2 solutions and on the metallic salts. MD simulations have been carried out to obtain structural information on the metal ion coordination. The analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of the solutions has been carried out based on the atomistic description provided by MD, and the studied ILs have been found to be able to dissolve both the Co(Tf2N)2 and Ni(Tf2N)2 salts giving rise to a different structural arrangement around the metal ions as compared to the solid state. The combined EXAFS and MD results showed that the Co2+ and Ni2+ ions are surrounded by a first solvation shell formed by six [Tf2N]- anions, each coordinating in a monodentate fashion by means of the oxygen atoms. The nature of the IL organic cation has little or no influence on the overall spatial arrangement of the [Tf2N]- anions, so that stable octahedral complexes of the type [M(Tf2N)6]4- (M = Co, Ni) have been observed in all the investigated ILs.

Anatomy of a deep eutectic solvent: structural properties of choline chloride : sesamol 1 : 3 compared to reline

The structural properties of the deep eutectic solvent (DES) formed by choline chloride (ChCl) and sesamol in 1 : 3 ratio have been investigated and compared to those of reline (ChCl : urea 1 : 2). An integrated approach combining small and wide angle X-ray scattering with molecular dynamics simulations has been employed and the simulation protocol has been validated against the experimental data. In the ChCl : sesamol DES, strong hydrogen bonds (HBs) are formed between the chloride anion and the hydroxyl groups of the choline and of sesamol molecules. Conversely, choline-choline, choline-sesamol and sesamol-sesamol interactions are negligible. A more extended interplay between the constituents is observed in reline where, besides the HBs involving the chloride anion, the eutectic formation is favored also by strong choline-urea and urea-urea interactions. The three-dimensional arrangement around the individual components shows that, in the ChCl : sesamol DES, the cholinium cations and the sesamol molecules are packed in such a way to maximize the interactions with the chlorine anion. This structural arrangement may favor the π-π interactions between the sesamol molecules and the aromatic species mediated by the chloride ions, providing an interpretation for the high separation rates previously observed for phenolic DESs towards aromatic compounds.

Molecular-dynamics simulations on the mesophase transition induced by oscillatory shear in imidazolium-based ionic liquid crystals

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed on a 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C₁₂mim][PF₆]) ionic liquid crystal (ILC) with the application of an oscillatory shear. We found that the oscillatory shear can both accelerate and suppress mesophase formation depending on shear amplitude. A small amplitude shear can speed up the mesophase transition dynamics and result in a more ordered mesomorphic structure than that without shear, i.e., an effect of accelerated aging. The mesophase is destabilized when the shear amplitude is large enough, resulting in a smectic A (SmA) to liquid or a smectic B (SmB) to SmA transition, with the mesophase behaviour summarized in an out-of-equilibrium phase diagram. Inside the layer plane a medium-range hexatic order was observed, with the correlation length extending to several nanometres in the shear-induced SmA phase. We rationalize the nonequilibrium mesophase behaviour from the rheology of isotropic liquids, finding a temperature-independent critical relaxation time for the mesophase transition in the translational or rotational dynamics. This finding can be used to predict the mesophase behaviour in the sheared ILCs from the rheology of isotropic liquids.

La(Tf₂N)₃ in C₈(mim)₂(Tf₂N)₂/acetonitrile mixtures forms 10-fold coordination complexes composed of both acetonitrile molecules and Tf₂N⁻ anions.

Visible-to-UV Photon Upconversion in Nanostructured Chromophoric Ionic Liquids

Visible-to-ultraviolet (vis-to-UV) triplet-triplet annihilation based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) is achieved in a non-volatile chromophoric ionic liquid (IL) for the first time. A novel IL is synthesized by combining UV-emitting anion 4-(2-phenyloxazol-5-yl)benzenesulfonate (PPOS) and trihexyltetradecylphosphonium cation (P66614). The nanostructured organization of chromophoric anions is demonstrated by synchrotron X-ray and optical measurements. When the IL is doped with a triplet sensitizer tris(2-phenylpyridinato)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy)3), the visible-to-UV TTA-UC with a relatively low threshold excitation intensity of 61 mW cm-2 is achieved. This is due to a large triplet diffusion coefficient in the IL (1.4×10-7 cm2 s-1) as well as a high absorption coefficient 15 cm-1 and a long PPOS triplet lifetime of 1.55 ms, all implemented in the condensed IL system. This work demonstrates the unique potential of ILs to control chromophore arrangements for desired functions.

A combined LX-NMR and molecular dynamics investigation of the bulk and local structure of ionic liquid crystals

The unique power of NMR spectroscopy in anisotropic media (LX-NMR) as a tool to obtain local and bulk structural information, combined with the effectiveness of molecular dynamics simulations at the atomistic level, shows very attractive potentialities for the study of interesting, even though still poorly understood, materials such as Ionic Liquid Crystals (ILCs). In this work, we focused our attention, in particular, on the orientational ordering of two mesophases: 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C12C1im]Cl, and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [C12C1im][BF4]. Both ILCs were studied by a 2H NMR direct investigation of the molecules forming the phases, suitably deuterated, and by 1H NMR spectroscopy, using the small rigid probe-solutes 1,4-dichlorobenzene (DCB), dissolved in [C12C1im][BF4] and [C12C1im]Cl, and 1,4-dibromobenzene (DBB) dissolved in [C12C1im][BF4], to probe the local, internal structure and organization of the mesophases. The experimental results were then compared with the predictions, by atomistic MD simulations, of the structure of the smectic phase of the two salts, at two selected temperatures, containing a single DCB molecule as a probe. The MD simulations show that the DCB solute is distributed only within the hydrophobic layers of the ILC. Orientational order parameters of the imidazolium cations and of the DCB molecule were obtained and compared with the experiments, showing a general good agreement and allowing a deeper understanding of the microscopic structure of the systems.

Solvation Structure of Poly(benzyl methacrylate) in a Solvate Ionic Liquid: Preferential Solvation of Li-Glyme Complex Cation

We report the solvation structure of a lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type thermoresponsive polymer in a solvate ionic liquid (SIL, i.e., an ionic liquid comprising solvate ions) to elucidate the predominant interaction for the dissolution of the thermoresponsive polymer in SIL at low temperatures. The solvation structure of poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PBnMA) and a model compound of its monomer in a typical glyme-based SIL, [Li(G4)][TFSA] (G4: tetraglyme; TFSA: bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide), have been investigated using high-energy X-ray total scattering and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. In the model compound/SIL system, the intermolecular components extracted from the total G( r)s revealed that the ester moiety of BnMA is preferentially solvated by Li cations through a cation-dipole interaction, which induces slight desolvation of the G4 molecules, and the aromatic ring of BnMA is secondarily solvated by the [Li(G4)] cation complex through a cation-π interaction with maintaining the complex structure. In contrast, TFSA anions are attracted only by the [Li(G4)] cation. These interactions result in the formation of a solvation layer of SILs around the aromatic ring, which plays a key role in the negative entropy and enthalpy of mixing. Meanwhile, in the polymer solution, the coordination number of the Li cation around the ester moiety significantly decreased. This could be ascribed to the steric effect of the bulky side chains, preventing the approach of the [Li(G4)] cation complex to the ester moiety located near the main chain. These solvation structures lead to small absolute values of negative entropy and enthalpy of mixing, which together are key factors to understand the LCST-type phase behavior in the IL system.

Molecular dynamics study of mesophase transitions upon annealing of imidazolium-based ionic liquids with long-alkyl chains

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed on a 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C12mim][PF6]) ionic liquid using a united-atom model. The ionic liquid exhibits second step relaxation at temperatures below a crossover point, where the diffusion coefficient shows an Arrhenius to non-Arrhenius transition. Annealing below this crossover temperature makes an isotropic to mesophase transition, where the smectic A (SmA) phase or crystal-like smectic B (SmB) phase forms. Hundreds of nanoseconds are required for completing these transitions. A normal diffusion process is found for anions along the layer-normal and -lateral directions in the SmA phase, but only in the lateral directions in the SmB phase. We find a preserved orientational order for the imidazolium-ring rotational and the alkyl-chain reorientational dynamics in both of the smectic phases.

A Molecular Dynamics-Quantum Mechanics Theoretical Study of DNA-Mediated Charge Transport in Hydrated Ionic Liquids

Charge transport (CT) through biomolecules is of high significance in the research fields of biology, nanotechnology, and molecular devices. Inspired by our previous work that showed the binding of ionic liquid (IL) facilitated charge transport in duplex DNA, in silico simulation is a useful means to understand the microscopic mechanism of the facilitation phenomenon. Here molecular dynamics simulations (MD) of duplex DNA in water and hydrated ionic liquids were employed to explore the helical parameters. Principal component analysis was further applied to capture the subtle conformational changes of helical DNA upon different environmental impacts. Sequentially, CT rates were calculated by a QM/MM simulation of the flickering resonance model based upon MD trajectories. Herein, MD simulation illustrated that the binding of ionic liquids can restrain dynamic conformation and lower the on-site energy of the DNA base. Confined movement among the adjacent base pairs was highly related to the increase of electronic coupling among base pairs, which may lead DNA to a CT facilitated state. Sequentially combining MD and QM/MM analysis, the rational correlations among the binding modes, the conformational changes, and CT rates illustrated the facilitation effects from hydrated IL on DNA CT and supported a conformational-gating mechanism.

On the coordination of Zn2+ ion in Tf2N− based ionic liquids: structural and dynamic properties depending on the nature of the organic cation

Origin of heterogeneous dynamics in local molecular structures of ionic liquids

Room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) are generally considered as structurally heterogeneous with inherent polar/apolar phase separation. However, even after a decade of research, local dynamics in the heterogeneous structures of ILs remain neglected. Such local dynamics may influence the ion transport of electrolytes, as well as the reaction rate of solvents. In this study, we performed molecular dynamics simulation to analyze the local dynamics for the structural heterogeneity of ILs. Calculations of the diffusion, reorientation, and association dynamics showed a distinct heterogeneous dynamics between the polar and apolar regions of ILs. Further studies demonstrated that such local dynamic differences originate from local structural heterogeneity. Different energy barriers determine a predominant fast reorientation dynamics in apolar regions and a locally vibrating behavior in polar regions. Additionally, we suggested a new jumping mechanism to clarify the dynamic heterogeneity of ions in the polar regions. The results will help determine the origin of the heterogeneous dynamics in IL local structures and provide a theoretical basis for tuning the dynamic properties of ILs used as electrolytes or reaction solvents.

Quasielastic neutron scattering studies on glass-forming ionic liquids with imidazolium cations

Relaxation processes for imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated by means of an incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering technique. In order to clarify the cation and anion effects on the relaxation processes, ten samples were measured. For all of the samples, we found three relaxations at around 1 ps, 10 ps, and 100 ps-10 ns, each corresponding to the alkyl reorientation, the relaxation related to the imidazolium ring, and the ionic diffusion. The activation energy (Ea) for the alkyl relaxation is insensitive to both anion and alkyl chain lengths. On the other hand, for the imidazolium relaxation and the ionic diffusion processes, Ea increases as the anion size decreases but is almost independent of the alkyl chain length. This indicates that the ionic diffusion and imidazolium relaxation are governed by the Coulombic interaction between the core parts of the cations (imidazolium ring) and the anions. This is consistent with the fact that the imidazolium-based ILs have nanometer scale structures consisting of ionic and neutral (alkyl chain) domains. It is also found that there is a clear correlation between the ionic diffusion and viscosity, indicating that the ionic diffusion is mainly associated with the glass transition which is one of the characteristics of imidazolium-based ILs.
