Novel compounds in the Zr-O system, their crystal structures and mechanical properties

Signature of low-dimensional quasi-F centers in zirconium-rich electrides

Electrides are a class of materials consisting of non-nuclear excess electrons as quasi-F centers or Farbe centers within a positively charged lattice framework, and have significant applications in the fields of electrochemistry, spintronics, and electrode materials. Using first-principles quantum mechanical calculations, we have demonstrated exotic electronic structures of zirconium-rich electrides, Zr2X (X = O, Se, and Te), and obtained the quantitative values of charge transfer (oxidation states), and projected density of states associated with the localized quasi F-centers. The localized interstitial anionic electrons exhibit significant charge transfer values of approximately -1.88, -2.01, and -1.79 per atom in Zr2O, Zr2Se, and Zr2Te, respectively, and contribute actively in the electronic band structures and density of states at the Fermi level. From the 2D contour plot of the electron localization function (ELF), it has been predicted that the spatial distribution of the quasi-F centers stabilizes in the form of a one-dimensional pattern, with localized ELF sites interconnected with delocalized electron channels. Further, low work-function values of Zr2X, ranging from 2.7-3.4 eV, confirm the electride properties of these binary compounds, promising applications in electro-catalytic oxidations and anode materials in batteries. These unique electronic properties of anionic electrons free from nuclear binding in Zr2X have not been reported yet in the literature.

Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Using Metastable Zirconium Suboxide

Strategies for discovery of high-performance electrocatalysts are important to advance clean energy technologies. Metastable phases such as low temperature or interfacial structures that are difficult to access in bulk may offer such catalytically active surfaces. We report here that the suboxide Zr3O, which is formed at Zr-ZrO2 interfaces but does not appear in the experimental Zr-O phase diagram exhibits outstanding oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance surpassing that of benchmark Pt/C and most transition metal-based catalysts. Addition of Fe3C nanoparticles to give a Zr-Zr3O-Fe3C/NC catalyst (NC=nitrogen-doped carbon) gives a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.914 V, outperforming Pt/C and showing only a 3 mV decrease after 20,000 electrochemical cycles. A zinc-air battery (ZAB) using this cathode material has a high power density of 241.1 mW cm-2 and remains stable for over 50 days of continuous cycling, demonstrating potential for practical applications. Zr3O demonstrates that interfacial or other phases that are difficult to stabilize may offer new directions for the discovery of high-performance electrocatalysts.

High-temperature tribological performance of stir-cast and heat-treated EV31A magnesium alloy: Experiments and predictions

The temperature effect on the wear behaviour of EV31A Mg alloy during dry sliding wear was investigated. Wear tests were carried out at 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 °C using a standard load of 10 N and a sliding distance of 1000 m. Weight loss method was used to calculate the wear rate. Optical microscopy was used to examine the microstructure of the EV31A alloy. FE-SEM with EDS analysis was used to investigate the wear morphology, and XRD analysis was performed both before and after the wear test. A high wear coefficient (K) value (more than 10-4) indicates extreme wear for EV31A in all the scenarios. T4 EV31A had a maximum wear rate of 20.2 mg at 150 °C. The as-cast EV31A alloy exhibits an excellent wear rate at the price of mechanical properties under all test scenarios. Wear resistance is improved by Nd and Zr oxides, although Mg and Gd oxides have little effect. Zn has no effect on the wear behaviour of the EV31A. In as-cast, T4, and T6 heat-treated conditions, the EV31A alloy exhibits delamination (abrasive wear), oxide development (corrosive wear), and delamination mixed with plastic deformation (adhesive wear). A Three-layered ANN and adapted Fine Gaussian SVM predicted tribological characteristics. In ANN prediction, the maximum R2 was 0.99 for CoF and 0.89 for wear rate, respectively. Despite the fact that the study's normal load is constant, machine learning models allow to deduce that temperature and normal load are the main influential parameters in CoF and wear rate, respectively.

Ab initio phase diagrams of Hf-O, Zr-O and Y-O: a comparative study

We present phase diagrams of binary oxides, Hf-O, Zr-O and Y-O, obtained by ab initio evolutionary simulations, in order to explore possible metastable crystalline suboxide structures which could be quenched during the electroforming processes within the conductive filaments in stoichiometric HfO2, ZrO2 and Y2O3 host materials, in resistive switching devices. We find that, in the range MO-MO2 (where M = Hf, Zr, Y), the most energetically favourable atomic configurations have properties which facilitate the ionic conduction of oxygen. Namely, the calculations reveal that oxygen vacancies tend to order in arrays of one-dimensional channels, along which the migration barrier of anions is much lower than for the stoichiometric hosts. We explore for Hf-O and Zr-O a new set of structural patterns, different from those of the host materials, for which a change of oxygen stoichiometry does not change the underlying structural frame. However, a sufficient change of oxygen stoichiometry drives metallic conductivity in oxygen-deficient compounds, whereas their oxygen-rich counterparts are insulating. In contrast to Hf-O and Zr-O, in the Y-O system we find an atomic structure with metallic conductivity, which has the same structural frame as the stoichiometric Y2O3 host. We believe that this property enables the forming-free resistive switching in Y2O3.
