A first principles study of CO2 adsorption on α-SiO2(001) surfaces

A graphene-like semiconducting BC2P monolayer as a promising material for a Li-ion battery and CO2 adsorbent

Searching for high-performance anode materials and CO₂ adsorption materials are key factors for next-generation renewable energy technologies and mitigation of the greenhouse effect. Herein, we report a novel two-dimensional (2D) BC₂P monolayer with great potential as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and as a material for CO₂ adsorption. The adsorption energies of Li atoms and CO₂ molecules on the BC₂P supercell are negative enough to assure stability and safety under operating conditions. More intriguingly, the BC₂P monolayer possesses a very high theoretical capacity of 1018.8 mA g h^-1 for LIBs. In addition, the diffusion energy barriers of Li on the BC₂P supercell are 0.26 and 0.87 eV, showing good charge/discharge capability, and the electrode potential of Li is beneficial to their performance as an anode material. Moreover, four chemical and three physical adsorption sites were verified, indicating that the CO₂ molecule was effectively adsorbed on the BC₂P supercell. These desirable properties make the BC₂P monolayer a promising 2D material for application in LIBs and for CO₂ adsorbents aimed at highly efficient CO₂ capture.

Complex Organic Matter Synthesis on Siloxyl Radicals in the Presence of CO

Heterogeneous phase astrochemistry plays an important role in the synthesis of complex organic matter (COM) as found on comets and rocky body surfaces like asteroids, planetoids, moons and planets. The proposed catalytic model is based on two assumptions: (a) siliceous rocks in both crystalline or amorphous states show surface-exposed defective centers such as siloxyl (Si-O•) radicals; (b) the second phase is represented by gas phase CO molecules, an abundant C₁ building block found in space. By means of quantum chemistry; (DFT, PW6B95/def2-TZVPP); the surface of a siliceous rock in presence of CO is modeled by a simple POSS (polyhedral silsesquioxane) where a siloxyl (Si-O•) radical is present. Four CO molecules have been consecutively added to the Si-O• radical and to the nascent polymeric CO (pCO) chain. The first CO insertion shows no activation free energy with ΔG_200K = −21.7 kcal/mol forming the SiO-CO• radical. The second and third CO insertions show ΔG200K‡ ≤ 10.5 kcal/mol. Ring closure of the SiO-CO-CO• (oxalic anhydride) moiety as well as of the SiO-CO-CO-CO• system (di-cheto form of oxetane) are thermodynamically disfavored. The last CO insertion shows no free energy of activation resulting in the stable five member pCO ring, precursor to 1,4-epoxy-1,2,3-butanone. Hydrogenation reactions of the pCO have been considered on the SiO oxygen or on the carbons and oxygens of the pCO chains. The formation of the reactive aldehyde SiO-CHO on the siliceous surface is possible. In principle, the complete hydrogenation of the (CO)₁₋₄ series results in the formation of methanol and polyols. Furthermore, all the SiO-pCO intermediates and the lactone 1,4-epoxy-1,2,3-butanone product in its radical form can be important building blocks in further polymerization reactions and/or open ring reactions with H (aldehydes, polyols) or CN (chetonitriles), resulting in highly reactive multi-functional compounds contributing to COM synthesis.

Band gap modulation of SrTiO3 upon CO2 adsorption

Herein, CO₂ chemisorption on SrTiO₃(001) surfaces is studied using ab initio calculations to establish new chemical sensing mechanisms. It was found that CO₂ adsorption opens the band gap of the material. However, the mechanisms are different: the CO₂ adsorption on the TiO₂-terminated surface neutralizes the surface states at the valence band (VB) maximum, whereas for the SrO-terminated surface it suppresses the conduction band (CB) minimum. For the TiO₂-terminated surface, the effect is explained by the passivation of dangling bonds, whereas for the SrO-terminated surface, the suppression is caused by surface relaxation. Modulation of the VB states implies a more direct change in charge distribution, and thus, the induced change in the band gap is more prominent at the TiO₂ termination. Further, it has been shown that both CO₂ adsorption energy and surface band gap are strongly dependent on CO₂ coverage, suggesting that the observed effect can be utilized in sensing applications for a wide range of CO₂ concentrations.

Co-adsorption of O2 and H2O on Al(111) surface: a vdW-DFT study
