Abstract
Tetrakispyrazolylethene (1) was synthesized from pyrazole and hexachloroethane through a one-step substitution reaction. The increase of emission was detected both in solid and aqueous THF solution, compared with that in anhydrous THF. While the former originates from the crystal packing, the latter is attributed to the protonation-induced emission, independent of aggregation, based on the optical measurement under varying concentrations and particle-size distribution analysis.

Abstract
Dipyrromethenes containing two pyrrole rings connected by one meso-carbon are versatile monoanionic bidentate ligands and form coordination complexes with many metals/nonmetals/metalloids. Dipyrroethenes containing one additional meso-carbon compared to dipyrromethenes have more space between coordinating pyrrole nitrogens and provide a good coordination environment but have not been explored as ligands in coordination chemistry. Dipyrroethenes are dianionic bidentate ligands and by suitable modifications, the coordination environment of dipyrroethenes can be changed further. Herein, we successfully synthesized α,α'-ditolylmethanone dipyrroethene which is a bipyrrolic tetradentate ligand with an ONNO ligand core and used it for the synthesis of novel Pd(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) metal complexes by treating it with respective metal salts in CH2Cl2/CH3OH at room temperature. The X-ray crystallographic structure of the metal complexes showed that the M(II) ion was coordinated to the ONNO atoms of the ligand in a perfect square planar geometry. The NMR studies of Pd(II) and Ni(II) complexes also supported the highly symmetric nature of the metal complexes. The absorption spectra of the metal complexes showed strong bands in the region of 300-550 nm. The electrochemical studies of metal complexes revealed that only ligand-based oxidation and reduction were observed. The DFT and TD-DFT studies were in agreement with the experimental observations. Our preliminary studies indicated that the Pd(II) complex can be used as a catalyst for the Fujiwara-Moritani olefination reaction.

Abstract
Fluorophores with aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties have attracted increasing interest in recent years. On the basis of our previous research, we successfully designed and synthesized eleven chalcones. Through an optical performance experiment, we confirmed that compounds 1-6 had obvious AIEE properties. As these AIEE molecules had excellent fluorescence properties and a large Stokes shift, we studied their application in living cell imaging, and the results showed that these compounds had low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility at the experimental concentrations. More importantly, they could specifically label mitochondria. Subsequently, we selected zebrafish as experimental animals to explore the possibilities of these compounds in animal imaging. The fluorescence imaging of zebrafish showed that these AIEE molecules can enter the embryo and can be targeted to aggregate in the digestive tract, which provides a strong foundation for their practical application in the field of biological imaging. Compared with traditional fluorophores, these AIEE molecules have the advantages of possessing a small molecular weight and high flexibility. Therefore, they have excellent application prospects in the field of biological imaging. In addition, the findings of this study have very positive practical significance for the discovery of more AIEE molecules.

Abstract
AbstractIsolation of E-1,2-bis(4-bromophenyl)-1,2-diphenyl-ethylene from the E/Z isomer mixture obtained by a McMurry coupling reaction and reaction of this isomer with imidazole followed by N-alkylation with nBuBr and anion exchange yielded the bisimidazolium tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivative H2-E-1(PF6)2. The reaction of H2-E-1(PF6)2 with Ag2O yielded the di-nuclear metallarectangle [Ag2(E-1)2](PF6)2 where the two bis-NHC donors E-1 bridge two silver atoms. Irradiation of [Ag2(E-1)2](PF6)2 leads to E/Z isomerization of the di-NHC ligand and formation of Z-1 in the mononuclear complex [Ag(Z-1)]PF6. Demetallation of the di-NHC ligand with NH4Cl/NH4PF6 yielded bisimidazolium salt H2-Z-1(PF6)2. The unique isomerization of the E-TPE derivative into its Z-isomer via metal complex formation/irradiation/demetallation cannot be achieved by irradiation of the individual imidazolium salt. The emissive properties of the TPE complexes [Ag2(E-1)2](PF6)2 and [Ag(Z-1)]PF6 have been investigated.

Abstract
The enhancement of photoluminescence through formation of molecular aggregates in organic oligomers and conjugated organic polymers is reviewed. A historical contextualization of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena is presented. This includes the loose bolt or free rotor effect and J-aggregation phenomena, and discusses their characteristic features, including structures and mechanisms. The basis of both effects is examined in key molecules, with a particular emphasis on the AIE effect occurring in conjugated organic polymers with a polythiophene (PT) skeleton with triphenylethylene (TPE) units. Rigidification of the excited state structure is one of the defining conditions required to obtain AIE, and thus, by changing from a flexible ground state to rigid (quinoidal-like) structures, oligo and PTs are among the most promising emerging molecules alongside with the more extensively used TPE derivatives. Molecular structures moving away from the domination of aggregation-caused quenching to AIE are presented. Future perspectives for the rational design of AIEgen structures are discussed.

Abstract
Vinylene-bridged cyclic boron–difluoride complex of dipyrrin (BODIPY) trimers were successfully prepared from expanded dimethyl-vinylene bridged hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) Me-Hex that has the structure of alternate dipyrrins and vinylene bridges. The hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) Me-Hex can coordinate with boron ions to afford five kinds of cyclic BODIPYs given by step-by-step boron complexations. Crystal structures of all cyclic BODIPYs except for 3BF2-Me-Hex(b) formed non-planar structures. The theoretical calculation predicted that mono-/bis-boron cyclic BODIPYs show the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristics, whereas tri-boron cyclic BODIPYs have no ICT characteristics. Reflecting these electronic properties, tri-boron cyclic BODIPYs exhibit weak fluorescence in the red region, but mono-/bis-boron cyclic BODIPYs exhibit no emission. Vinylene bridged cyclic dipyrrin trimer Me-Hex is the novel porphyrinoid ligand allowed to control the boron coordination under different reaction conditions to form various boron complexes.

Abstract
Vinylene-bridged hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) was synthesized from dipyrrolyl diphenylethenes by acid-catalyzed condensation reactions. Freebase hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) forms a distorted structure with non-aromatic characteristics. The aromaticity and molecular configuration of non-planar hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) can be controlled by insertion of metal ions. Freebase and zinc complexes show a distorted structure without macrocyclic aromaticity, whereas copper complexes show a figure-of-eight structure with macrocyclic aromaticity. It is the first example of aromaticity conversion of a distorted expanded porphyrin involving vinylene bridges.

Abstract
An aggregation-induced emission chromophore, vinylpyrrole, was prepared from a formylpyrrole derivative, Meldrum's acid, and 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid. The optical properties of the chromophore both in the solution and solid states were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the dimethylbarbituric acid adduct formed a J-aggregate in the solid and resulted in higher fluorescence quantum yield compared to the Meldrum's acid adduct. Emission enhancement was found to occur by the restriction of molecular rotation in the solid state. A cyclic ester and a cyclic amide functionalized monopyrroles show aggregation-induced emission (AIE) by the restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR) mechanism.![]()

Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is the long-sought solution to the problem of aggregation-caused quenching that has hampered efficient application of fluorescent organic materials. An important goal on the way to fully understand the working mechanism of the AIE process was, for more than a decade, and still remains obtaining more comprehensive insights into the correlation between the ultrafast excited-state dynamics in tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based molecules and the AIE effect in them. Here we report a number of TPE-based derivatives with varying structural rigidities and AIE properties. Using a combination of ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy and computational studies, we observe a direct correlation between the state-dependent coupling motions and inhibited fluorescence, and prove the existence of photocyclized intermediates in them. We demonstrate that the dominant non-radiative relaxation dynamics, i.e. formation of intermediate or rotation around the elongated C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond, is responsible for the AIE effect, which is strongly structure-dependent but not related to structural rigidity.

Abstract
A deep-blue-emitting sultam-based hetero[5]helicene was synthesized in four steps, and its crystal structure and physical properties were characterized. The helicene displays more than two-fold crystallization-induced emission enhancement as well as atypical blue-shifting of its solid-state emission relative to the solution phase. This rapid synthesis of an unusual sulfonamide-based helicene fluorophore is expected to generate new molecular design options that will help address the ongoing challenges associated with designing pure-blue emitters for organic optoelectronic and sensing applications.

Abstract
Polypyridyl ethylenes have been prepared as heterocyclic analogues of tetraphenylethylene. In addition to conventional AIE effects, a derivative possessing a 1,1-bis(2-pyridyl)ethylene fragment displays Zn(2+)-selective enhanced fluorescence in aqueous solution, in contrast to the behavior of isomeric bis(3- and 4-pyridyl)ethylenes. The Zn(2+)-sensing capability of this material is attributed to formation of chelated Zn(2+)-bis(pyridyl) complexes and is supported by the X-ray crystal structure of a bis(2-pyridyl)ethylene-Zn(OAc)2 complex.
