Abstract
Triphenylamine (TPA) and N-heterotriangulene (N-HTA) scaffolds with up to three oligophenyl extensions are investigated by electrospray ionization (tandem) mass spectrometry (ESI-[MS/]MS). Due to their low oxidation potentials, all molecules readily form radical cations in the electrospray process. The energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation behaviour of the molecular ions is contrasted to that of the silver(I) adducts. Complexation with Ag(I) leads to the expected [1:1] and [2:1] complexes (MAg+ and M2Ag+); however, even [1:2] complexes (MAg2 2+) can be detected for molecules with two and three large π-expansions to allow stabilization of two charges. The TPA scaffolds decompose only at high collision energies through the loss of peripheral tert-butyl groups. A general mechanism for this is proposed commencing with a methyl loss and followed by the release of isobutene and butyl radical moieties. The N-HTA-based scaffolds are considerably less stable and molecular ions fragment at low collision energies. This is caused by the facile loss of methyl radicals from the dimethylmethylene-bridged triangulene core. In contrast, complexation with Ag+ leads to a dramatic stabilization. Most interestingly, dissociation eventually proceeds via the loss of neutral AgCH3, which is indicative of strong bidentate, tweezer-like bonding of Ag+ to the molecules.

Abstract
Gas-phase complexes of [n]helicenes with n=6, 7 and 8 and the silver(I) cation are generated utilizing electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Besides the well-established [1 : 1] helicene/Ag+ -complex in which the helicene provides a tweezer-like surrounding for the Ag+ , there is also a [2 : 1] complex formed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations in conjunction with energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation (ER-CID) experiments reveal that the second helicene attaches via π-π stacking to the first helicene, which is part of the pre-formed [1 : 1] tweezer complex with Ag+ . For polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of planar structure, the [2 : 1] complex with silver(I) is typically structured as an Ag+ -bound dimer in which the Ag+ would bind to both PAHs as the central metal ion (PAH-Ag+ -PAH). For helicenes, the Ag+ -bound dimer is of similar thermochemical stability as the π-π stacked dimer, however, it is kinetically inaccessible. Coronene (Cor) is investigated in comparison to the helicenes as an essentially planar PAH. In analogy to the π-π stacked dimer of the helicenes, the Cor-Ag+ -Cor-Cor complex is also observed. Competition experiments using [n]helicene mixtures reveal that the tweezer complexes of Ag+ are preferably formed with the larger helicenes, with n=6 being entirely ignored as the host for Ag+ in the presence of n=7 or 8.

Abstract
Polyhedral molecules are appealing for their eye-catching architecture and distinctive chemistry. Perfluorination of such, often greatly strained, compounds is a momentous challenge. It drastically changes the electron distribution, structure and properties. Notably, small high-symmetry perfluoropolyhedranes feature a centrally located, star-shaped low-energy unoccupied molecular orbital that can host an extra electron within the polyhedral frame, thus producing a radical anion, without loss of symmetry. This predicted electron-hosting capacity was definitively established for perfluorocubane, the first perfluorinated Platonic polyhedrane to be isolated pure. Hosting atoms, molecules, or ions in such "cage" structures is, however, all but forthright, if not illusionary, offering no easy access to supramolecular constructs. While adamantane and cubane have fostered numerous applications in materials science, medicine, and biology, specific uses for their perfluorinated counterparts remain to be established. Some aspects of highly fluorinated carbon allotropes, such as fullerenes and graphite, are briefly mentioned for context.

Abstract
We investigated the gas phase fragmentation events of highly symmetric fullerene-like (FN-like) titanium oxo-cluster anions, [H12Ti42O60(OCH3)42(HOCH3)10(H2O)2]2- (1) and [H7Ti42O60(OCH3)42(HOCH3)10(H2O)3]1- (2). These oxo-clusters contain a closed cage Ti42O60 core, protected by a specific number of methoxy, methanol, and water molecules acting as ligands. These dianionic and monoanionic species were generated in the gas phase by electrospray ionization of the H6[Ti42(μ3-O)60(OiPr)42(OH)12] (TOF) cluster in methanol. Collision induced dissociation studies of 1 revealed that upon increasing the collision energy, the protecting ligands were stripped off first, and [Ti41O58]2- was formed as the first fragment from the Ti42O60 core. Thereafter, systematic TiO2 losses were observed giving rise to subsequent fragments like [Ti40O56]2-, [Ti39O54]2-, [Ti38O52]2-, etc. Similar fragments were also observed for monoanionic species 2 as well. Systematic 23 TiO2 losses were observed, which were followed by complete shattering of the cage. We also carried out computational studies using density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the structures and fragmentation mechanism. The fragmentation of TOF was comparable to the fragmentation of C60 ions, where systematic C2 losses were observed. We believe that this is a consequence of topological similarity. The present study provides valuable insights into the structural constitution of TOF clusters and stability of the parent as well as the resulting cage-fragments in the gas phase.

Abstract
The negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) has been proven to be a powerful technique to reveal the electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of various cluster anions/radicals with very high precision. However, direct comparisons of the theoretical NIPES with experimental measurements remain challenging. Particularly the nuclear vibration effect and the ionization probability are typically ignored in reproducing NIPES. In this work, the NIPES of three representative anions (NaS5-, P2N3-, and HCPN3-) with significantly different spectral features were simulated by combining the nuclear ensemble approach (NEA) and Dyson orbitals (DOs). Overall, the simulated NIPES are in good agreement with the experimentally determined ones, confirming the robustness of such a strategy. The analysis of frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) and DOs further suggests the similar mixed characters for the first ionized doublet (D0) and adjacent D1 states of NaS5- with distributions on the side sulfur atoms. And the D0 of P2N3* is confirmed as the lowest energy σ radical state; however, the D0 of HCPN3* should possess a mixture of π and σ electrons by taking into account the nuclear vibration effect. Next, the broader vibrational distribution and stronger main vibration modes of P2N3- and HCPN3- explain why the nuclear vibration possesses a more pronounced influence in reproducing their NIPES while it has little effect on NaS5-. Last, the limitations based on the double-harmonic approximation model and density of state method were also discussed, highlighting that the ionization probability and orbital relaxation effect during the ionization process should be reasonably considered.

Abstract
Geodesic nitrogen-containing graphene fragments are interesting candidates for various material applications, but the available synthetic protocols, which need to overcome intrinsic strain energy during the formation of the bowl-shaped skeletons, are often incompatible with heteroatom-embedded structures. Through this mass spectrometry-based gas-phase study, we show by means of collision-induced dissociation experiments and supported by density functional theory calculations, the first evidence for the formation of a porphyrin-embedded conical nanocarbon. The influences of metalation and functionalization of the used tetrabenzoporphyrins have been investigated, which revealed different cyclization efficiencies, different ionization possibilities, and a variation of the dissociation pathway. Our results suggest a stepwise process for HF elimination from the fjord region, which supports a selective pathway towards bent nitrogen-containing graphene fragments.

Abstract
Laser-induced cross-linking of polyynes is successfully hindered when the polyyne is encapsulated as part of a rotaxane and therefore protected by a surrounding macrocycle. When the rotaxane is electrosprayed, however, noncovalent aggregate ions are efficiently formed. Aggregates of considerable size (including more than 50 rotaxane molecules with masses beyond 100k Da) and charge states (up to 13 charges and beyond) have been observed. Either protons or sodium cations act as the charge carriers. These aggregates are not formed when the individual components of the rotaxane, i.e., the macrocycle or the polyyne, are separately electrosprayed. This underlines the structural importance of the rotaxane for the aggregate formation. Straightforward force field calculations indicate that the polyyne thread hinders the folding of the macrocycles, which facilitates the bonding interaction between the two components.

Abstract
Stable, long-lived organic cations are directly transferred by electrospray ionization (ESI) from solution into the gas phase where their collision-induced dissociations (CID) are studied by tandem mass spectrometry. Three related types of triphenyl carbenium ions are investigated, in which the meta positions are either substituted by methoxy groups or tertiary nitrogen bridges, including tetramethoxyphenylacridinium (TMPA+ ), dimethoxyquinacridinium (DMQA+ ), and triazatriangulenium (TATA+ ) cations. These ions are triangular in shape with increasing degrees of planarity. Fragmentation occurs at the periphery of the triangular molecule, involving the methoxy groups and the substituent of the nitrogen bridge. Each initial precursor cation is an even electron (EE) system and shows competing dissociations into both even (EE) and odd electron (OE) fragment ions. The latter reaction is a breach of the classic 'even-electron rule' in mass spectrometry. While the EE fragment dissociates similar to the precursor, the OE fragment ion shows a rich radical-induced fragmentation pattern. Two driving forces direct the fragmentation of the EE precursor ion toward OE fragment ions, including the release of stabilized radicals and the extension of the π-system by increasing planarization of the triangulene core. Abstract
Electrospray ionisation of N-heterotriangulenes (i.e., dimethylmethylene-bridged triphenylamines) with up to three pyridyl groups at their periphery, produces the true radical cation ([M]+ . ) and the protonated molecule ([M+H]+ ) simultaneously. These ions are studied as model systems to illustrate the stability alternation of odd- versus even-electron ions in energy-dependent collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments. All ions show the same fragmentation pattern, the consecutive loss of three methyl radicals (. CH3 ) from the dimethylmethylene bridges of the central triangulene core. [M]+ . ions dissociate at much lower collision energies than their [M+H]+ counterparts. The radical cation forms a singlet fragment with an extended aromatic system that is energetically favoured. Ab initio and density functional theory calculations support this interpretation and allow the assignment of the electronic structure of the fragment ions. Consecutive collision-induced dissociations provide a better match with theory when studied with an ion trap, rather than a linear quadrupole. This is attributed to the resonant nature of the excitation of intermediate ions.
