Highly Efficient and Thermally Durable Luminescence of 1D Eu3+ Coordination Polymers with Arsenic Bridging Ligands

In this work, bisarsine oxides were evaluated as novel bridging ligands, aiming to develop practical and efficient luminescent lanthanide coordination polymers. We have synthesized one-dimensional (1D) Eu3+ coordination polymers that incorporate bisarsine oxide bridging ligands and hexafluoroacetylacetonate anions. These polymers exhibited a denser packing of chains compared to analogous polymers bridged with bisphosphine oxides. The coordination polymers demonstrated exceptional thermal stability and substantial emission quantum yields. Additionally, the bisarsine oxides induced a pronounced polarization effect, facilitating a sensitive electric dipole transition that yields considerably narrow band red emission. Remarkably, the Eu3+ coordination polymers with bisarsine oxides maintained intense emission even at 550 K. A distinctive feature of these polymers is their heating-induced emission enhancement observed when the temperature was increased from 300 K to 400 K.

Features of Luminescent Properties of Alginate Aerogels with Rare Earth Elements as Photoactive Cross-Linking Agents

Luminescent aerogels based on sodium alginate cross-linked with ions of rare earth elements (Eu3+, Tb3+, Sm3+) and containing phenanthroline, thenoyltrifluoroacetone, dibenzoylmethane, and acetylacetone as ligands introduced into the matrix during the impregnation of alginate aerogels (AEG), were obtained for the first time in a supercritical carbon dioxide medium. The impregnation method used made it possible to introduce organically soluble sensitizing ligands into polysaccharide matrices over the entire thickness of the sample while maintaining the porous structure of the aerogel. It is shown that the pore size and their specific area are 150 nm and 270 m2/g, respectively. Moreover, metal ions with content of about 23 wt.%, acting as cross-linking agents, are uniformly distributed over the thickness of the sample. In addition, the effect of sensitizing ligands on the luminescence intensity of cross-linked aerogel matrices is considered. The interaction in the resulting metal/ligand systems is unique for each pair, which is confirmed by the detection of broad bands with individual positions in the luminescence excitation spectra of photoactive aerogels.

Unexpected luminescent and photochemical properties of europium(III) cinnamates - Theoretical and experimental study

The luminescent and photochemical properties of europium(III) cinnamates [Eu(Cin)₃]_n (I) and Eu(Cin)₃·(phen) (II) were investigated in theoretical and experimental aspects. The high photostability of the complex I was explained. The complex II displays weak luminescence and low photostability in spite of the presence of a powerful antenna ligand 1,10-phenantroline in its coordination sphere. The unexpected luminescent and photochemical properties of europium(III) cinnamates were interpreted by the quantum chemistry methods. It was revealed that inclusion of phen molecule into Eu(Cin)₃ complex results in lengthening of Eu-Cin distances that promotes weakening of antenna effect. In the process of photoexcitation of this complex noticeable lengthening of Eu-Cin-2 bond takes place and Cin-3 ligand is detached from the molecule that is the cause of low photostability and weak luminescence of II.

Unveiling the Relationship between Energy Transfer and the Triplet Energy Level by Tuning Diarylethene within Europium(III) Complexes

Luminescence performance and photoisomerization control of sensitized energy transfer in a series of Eu(acac)₃De complexes that contain photochromic diarylethene (De) as the ligand are studied by theoretical methods. Both the open-ring and closed-ring isomers exhibit a consistent coordination mode between the Eu^III ion and De. An unneglected weak interaction originating from electrostatic attraction is found in the region of the coordinate bond Eu-N. The open-ring isomer has higher triplet energy levels than ⁵D₁ and ⁵D₀ of the Eu^III ion, which facilitates forward energy transfer from De to the Eu^III ion. The closed-ring isomer, for the extended conjugated system formed in cyclization, has a much lower triplet energy level than ⁵D₀ of the Eu^III ion. The energy-gap deficit makes energy transfer unavailable. By utilization of this phenomenon, regulation of energy transfer and reversible on/off luminescence switching of the europium(III) complex can be achieved. The forward and backward energy-transfer rates in different channels are also calculated for the series of complexes. A statistics diagram is obtained to exhibit the change trend of energy-transfer rates in the forward and backward directions as a function of the triplet energy level, which indicates the contribution of different channels to energy transfer in each level region and figures out that the optimal triplet energy level should be in the range of 21740-19532 cm^-1.

Energy Transfer-Assisted Whispering Gallery Mode Lasing in Conjugated Polymer/Europium Hybrid Microsphere Resonators

Lanthanide metal complexes display luminescence with narrow bandwidth. Here, we present coupling of the luminescence from europium ion (Eu³⁺ ) with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in conjugated polymer microsphere resonators. Self-assembly of fluorene-terpyridine alternating copolymer, coordinated by Eu³⁺ (F8tpy-Eu³⁺ ), forms well-defined microspheres with an average diameter of 3.2 μm. Upon focused laser excitation, a microsphere of F8tpy copolymer displays WGM photoluminescence (PL) at a wide spectral range from 420 to 680 nm. In contrast, F8tpy-Eu³⁺ hybrid microspheres exhibit sharp WGM PL at a narrow spectral range of 615-630 nm, which is characteristic of luminescence from Eu³⁺ . The PL behavior indicates that photoinduced energy transfer from F8tpy to Eu³⁺ occurs efficiently. Furthermore, the intensity of the PL peak increases nonlinearly upon strong pumping, indicating that a lasing action appears with the threshold of 1.85 mJ cm^-2 . These results will pave the way for developing microlasers and photonic devices from soft organic materials.

Europium(III) complex with powerful antenna ligands: Interligand interaction

The luminescent properties of europium(III) trifluoroacetate [Eu(TFA)3bipy·3Н2О]∙bipy (I), where TFA - trifluoroacetate anion and bipy - 2,2'bipyridyl were investigated. Despite the presence of two efficient antenna ligands in complex (bipy1 in europium coordination sphere and bipy2 in the outer-sphere) the complex displays weak luminescence. By employing density functional theory-based methods, the luminescence, electron structure, interligand interactions and the processes of energy transfer in I were investigated. The nature of the chemical bond in I was studied by the natural bond orbital analysis. The mechanism of luminescence weakening in the complex was ascertained: competitive energy transfer from coordinated bipy1 ligand on to outer-sphere bipy2 molecule results in appreciable weakening of the antenna effect.

Effects of structures of bidentate Schiff base type bonded-ligands derived from benzaldehyde on the photoluminescence performance of polymer–rare earth complexes

Two kinds of bidentate Schiff base ligands derived from benzaldehyde, benzaldehyde/m-aminophenol (BAMA) type and benzaldehyde/glutamic acid (BAGL) type ligands, were synchronously synthesized and bonded on the backbone of polysulfone (PSF) through molecular design and by polymer reactions, and two functional polymers, PSF-BAMA and PSF-BAGL, were obtained.

Looking for the Origin of Allosteric Cooperativity in Metallopolymers

The basic concept of allosteric cooperativity used in biology, chemistry and physics states that any change in the intermolecular host-guest interactions operating in multisite receptors can be assigned to intersite interactions. Using lanthanide metals as guests and linear multi-tridentate linear oligomers of variable lengths and geometries as hosts, this work shows that the quantitative modeling of metal loadings requires the consideration of a novel phenomenon originating from solvation processes. It stepwise modulates the intrinsic affinity of each isolated site in multisite receptors, and this without resorting to allosteric cooperativity. An easy-to-handle additive model predicts a negative power law dependence of the intrinsic affinity on the length of the linear metallopolymer. Applied to lanthanidopolymers, the latter common analysis overestimates cooperativity factors by more than two orders of magnitude.
