Impacts of Small SBA-15 Mesopores on Translation and Rotational Diffusion of Benzyl Alcohol

Small SBA-15 pores can enhance the catalytic activity of gold catalysts in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol reaction. The goal of this work is to probe the impact of SBA-15 pores on the translational and rotational diffusion of the reactive species (e.g., benzyl alcohol). Herein, we demonstrate the use of nuclear magnetic resonance-based diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) and T1 relaxation techniques to measure the translational and rotational diffusion coefficients of liquid benzyl alcohol molecules in three distinct environments: bulk, pore, and near-surface. The DOSY and T1 relaxation techniques render the routine diffusion measurements for liquid molecules confined in small pores possible. Furthermore, we measure the translational and rotational diffusion coefficients of benzyl alcohol molecules in the bulk, pore, and near-surface environments at varying temperatures. These measurements are then correlated via the Arrhenius equation to determine the activation energy associated with their translational (Et) and rotational (Er) diffusion. A higher activation energy suggests a more difficult diffusion process, while a lower activation energy implies a facile diffusion process. Our findings demonstrate that the ranking of Et follows the order of bulk (difficult) > near-surface > pore (easy), whereas the ranking of Er follows the order of pore (difficult) > bulk > near-surface (easy). This result suggests that the small SBA-15 pores can facilitate the translational diffusion but hinder the rotational diffusion of benzyl alcohol molecules.

Comparative Study of Quinolines and Tetrahydroquinolines Sorption on Various Sorbents from Water-Acetonitrile Solutions

The retention of 16 quinoline and tetrahydroquinoline derivatives was investigated under liquid chromatography conditions using porous graphitized carbon (PGC), octadecyl silica (ODS) and hypercrosslinked polystyrene (HCLP) stationary phases. For most of the analytes, retention on PGC was greater than on ODS, while retention on HCLP was even greater than on both ODS and PGC. The non-linearity of retention dependencies on acetonitrile content in the eluent was observed for compounds containing carboxy, hydrazo and methoxy groups. The relationships between quinolines structure and their retention factors were investigated. It was found that sorption on different sorbents correlated with different descriptors. Retention on ODS was found to be highly correlated with lipophilicity only while on HCLP it depended on both lipophilicity and polarizability of the sorbates. The feature of PGC was a good correlation of retention factors with topological and geometrical parameters. Additionally, ability of PGC to form OH…π bonds with hydroxymethylquinolines was found. The observed regularities allow one to rationally optimize the chromatographic analysis of structurally similar compounds, which is very important for bioactive substances.

Energetic and Structural Properties of Two Phenolic Antioxidants: Tyrosol and Hydroxytyrosol

Theoretical and experimental studies on the energetic, structural and some other relevant physicochemical properties of the antioxidant tyrosol (1), hydroxytyrosol (1OH) molecules and the corresponding radicals 1_rad^• and 1O_rad^• are reported in this work. The experimental values of the gas-phase enthalpy of formation, Δ_f H_m⁰(g), in kJ·mol^-1, of 1 (-302.4 ± 3.4) and 1OH (-486.3 ± 4.1) have been determined. Quantum chemical calculations, at DFT (M05-2X) and composite ab initio G3 and G4 levels of theory, provided results that served to (i) confirm the excellent consistency of the experimental measurements performed, (ii) establish that the stabilizing effect of H-bond of hydroxyethyl chain and aromatic ring (OH···π interaction) is smaller in radicals than in parent molecules, (iii) deduce-combining experimental data in isodesmic reactions-Δ_f H_m⁰(g) of radicals 1_rad^• (-152.3 ± 4.4 kJ·mol^-1) and 1O_rad^• (-370.6 ± 3.8 kJ·mol^-1), (iv) estimate a reliable O-H bond dissociation enthalpy, BDE of 1 (368.1 ± 5.6 kJ·mol^-1) and of 1OH (333.7 ± 5.6 kJ·mol^-1), and (v) corroborate-using "BDE criteria"-than 1OH is a more effective antioxidant than 1.
