The nature of chemical bonding in actinide and lanthanide ferrocyanides determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory

Overdestabilization vs Overstabilization in the Theoretical Analysis of f-Orbital Covalency

The complex nature of the f-orbital electronic structures and their interaction with the chemical environment pose significant computational challenges. Advanced computational techniques that variationally include scalar relativities and spin-orbit coupling directly at the molecular orbital level have been developed to address this complexity. Among these, variational relativistic multiconfigurational multireference methods stand out for their high accuracy and systematic improvement in studies of f-block complexes. Additionally, these advanced methods offer the potential for calibrating low-scaling electronic structure methods such as density functional theory. However, studies on the Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectra of the [Ce(III)Cl6]3- and [Ce(IV)Cl6]2- complexes show that time-dependent density functional theory with approximate exchange-correlation kernels can lead to inaccuracies, resulting in an overstabilization of 4f orbitals and incorrect assessments of covalency. In contrast, approaches utilizing small active space wave function methods may understate the stability of these orbitals. The results herein demonstrate the need for large active space, multireference, and variational relativistic methods in studying f-block complexes.

Relativistic Effects in Modeling the Ligand K-Edge X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure of Uranium Complexes

Accurate modeling of the complex electronic structure of actinide complexes requires full inclusion of relativistic effects. In this study, we examine the effect of explicit inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) versus scalar relativistic effects on the predicted spectra for heavy-element complexes. In this study, we employ a relativistic two-component Hamiltonian in the X2C form with all of the electrons in the system being considered explicitly to compare and contrast with previous studies that included the relativistic effects by means of relativistic effective core potentials (RECPs). A few uranium complexes are chosen as model systems. Comparison of the computed Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectra with experimental data shows significantly improved agreement when a variational relativistic treatment of SOC is performed. In particular, we note the importance of SOC terms to obtain not only correct transition energies but also correct intensities for these heavy-element complexes because of the redistribution of ligand bonding character among the valence MOs. While RECPs generally agree well with all-electron scalar relativistic calculations, there are some differences in the predicted spectra of open-shell systems. These methods are still suitable for broad application to analyze the qualitative nature of transitions in X-ray absorption spectra, but caution is recommended for quantitative analysis, as SOC can be non-negligible for both open- and closed-shell heavy-element systems.

The duality of electron localization and covalency in lanthanide and actinide metallocenes

Previous magnetic, spectroscopic, and theoretical studies of cerocene, Ce(C8H8)2, have provided evidence for non-negligible 4f-electron density on Ce and implied that charge transfer from the ligands occurs as a result of covalent bonding. Strong correlations of the localized 4f-electrons to the delocalized ligand π-system result in emergence of Kondo-like behavior and other quantum chemical phenomena that are rarely observed in molecular systems. In this study, Ce(C8H8)2 is analyzed experimentally using carbon K-edge and cerium M5,4-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopies (XAS), and computationally using configuration interaction (CI) calculations and density functional theory (DFT) as well as time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). Both spectroscopic approaches provide strong evidence for ligand → metal electron transfer as a result of Ce 4f and 5d mixing with the occupied C 2p orbitals of the C8H8 2- ligands. Specifically, the Ce M5,4-edge XAS and CI calculations show that the contribution of the 4f1, or Ce3+, configuration to the ground state of Ce(C8H8)2 is similar to strongly correlated materials such as CeRh3 and significantly larger than observed for other formally Ce4+ compounds including CeO2 and CeCl6 2-. Pre-edge features in the experimental and TDDFT-simulated C K-edge XAS provide unequivocal evidence for C 2p and Ce 4f covalent orbital mixing in the δ-antibonding orbitals of e2u symmetry, which are the unoccupied counterparts to the occupied, ligand-based δ-bonding e2u orbitals. The C K-edge peak intensities, which can be compared directly to the C 2p and Ce 4f orbital mixing coefficients determined by DFT, show that covalency in Ce(C8H8)2 is comparable in magnitude to values reported previously for U(C8H8)2. An intuitive model is presented to show how similar covalent contributions to the ground state can have different impacts on the overall stability of f-element metallocenes.

The chemical and physical properties of tetravalent lanthanides: Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy

The thermochemistry, descriptive chemistry, spectroscopy, and physical properties of the tetravalent lanthanides (Pr, Nd, Tb and Dy) in extended phases, gas phase, solution, and as isolable molecular complexes are presented.

Uranium Uptake in Paracentrotus lividus Sea Urchin, Accumulation and Speciation

Uranium speciation and bioaccumulation were investigated in the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Through accumulation experiments in a well-controlled aquarium followed by ICP-OES analysis, the quantification of uranium in the different compartments of the sea urchin was performed. Uranium is mainly distributed in the test (skeletal components), as it is the major constituent of the sea urchin, but in terms of quantity of uranium per gram of compartment, the following rating: intestinal tract > gonads ≫ test, was obtained. Combining both extended X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopic analysis, it was possible to identify two different forms of uranium in the sea urchin, one in the test, as a carbonato-calcium complex, and the second one in the gonads and intestinal tract, as a protein complex. Toposome is a major calcium-binding transferrin-like protein contained within the sea urchin. EXAFS data fitting of both contaminated organs in vivo and the uranium-toposome complex from protein purified out of the gonads revealed that it is suspected to complex uranium in gonads and intestinal tract. This hypothesis is also supported by the results from two imaging techniques, i.e., Transmission Electron Microscopy and Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy. This thorough investigation of uranium uptake in sea urchin is one of the few attempts to assess the speciation in a living marine organism in vivo.

Strong influence of weak hydrogen bonding on actinide-phosphonate complexation: accurate predictions from DFT followed by experimental validation

Among the varied classes of weak hydrogen bond, the CHO type is one of immense interest as it governs the finer structures of biological and chemical molecules, hence determining their functionalities. In the present work, this weak hydrogen bond has been shown to strongly influence the complexation behaviour of uranyl nitrate [UO2(NO3)2] with diamyl-H-phosphonate (DAHP) and its branched isomer disecamyl-H-phosphonate (DsAHP). The structures of the bare ligands and complexes have been optimized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Surprisingly, despite having the same chemical composition the branched UO2(NO3)2·2DsAHP complex shows a remarkably higher stability (by ∼14 kcal mol-1) compared to the UO2(NO3)2·2DAHP complex. Careful inspection of the optimized structures reveals the existence of multiple CHO hydrogen-bonding interactions between the nitrate oxygens or U[double bond, length as m-dash]O oxygens and the α-hydrogens in the alkyl chains of the ligands. Comparatively stronger such bonds are found in the UO2(NO3)2·2DsAHP complex. The binding free energies associated with the complexes are computed and favoured superior binding energetics for the more stable UO2(NO3)2·2DsAHP complex. Calculations involving diisoamyl-H-phosphonate (DiAHP) and its complexes have also been performed. Theoretical predictions are experimentally tested by carrying out the extraction of U(vi) from nitric acid media using these ligands. DAHP, DsAHP and DiAHP are synthesised, characterised by NMR and evaluated for their physicochemical properties viz. viscosity, density and aqueous solubility. It was experimentally discovered that indeed DsAHP complexation with uranyl nitrate is more favoured. H-phosphonates are generically classified as acidic extractants owing to the formation of an enol tautomer at lower acidities, hence complexing the metal ion by proton exchange. Our experiments interestingly reveal a neutral ligand characteristic for DsAHP alone which is generically an acidic extractant. Furthermore, the enol tautomer of H-phosphonates that governs their extraction profiles at low acidities is also explored by DFT and the anomalous pH dependent complexation trend of DsAHP could be successfully explained. The extractions of Pu(iv) and Th(iv) have also been carried out in addition to U(vi). Solvent extraction behaviour of Am(iii) was also studied with all three ligands; the positive binding energies computed for the Am(iii) complexation corroborate with our experimental results on the poor extraction of Am(iii).

The electronic structure of f-element Prussian blue analogs determined by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy

In molecular solids derived from Prussian blue, intermetallic charge transfer is fostered through a cyano bridge two metal ions. In this study, isostructural trivalent lanthanide and tetravalent actinide Prussian blue analogs' valence orbitals are probed by soft X-ray absorption measurements.

Ab Initio Study of Covalency in the Ground versus Core-Excited States and X-ray Absorption Spectra of Actinide Complexes

Relativistic multireference ab initio wave function calculations within the restricted active space (RAS) framework were performed to calculate metal and ligand X-ray absorption (XAS) near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) intensities for the metal M_4,5 edges of [PuO₂(H₂O)₅]²⁺, [An^VIO₂]²⁺ (An = U, Np, Pu), and [AmCl₆]^3- and the Cl K edge of the Am complex. The extent of An(5f)-ligand bonding was determined via natural localized molecular orbital analyses of the relevant spin-orbit coupled multireference states. The calculated spectra are in good agreement with experiments and allow a detailed assignment of the observed spectral features. The XANES M_4,5-edge spectra are representative of the actinide orbital covalency in the probed core-excited states, which may be different from the ground-state covalency. An assignment of ground-state An orbital covalency based on XAS spectra should therefore be made with caution.

Decomposition of d- and f-Shell Contributions to Uranium Bonding from the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules: Application to Uranium and Uranyl Halides

The electronic structures of a series of uranium hexahalide and uranyl tetrahalide complexes were simulated at the density functional theoretical (DFT) level. The resulting electronic structures were analyzed using a novel application of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) by exploiting the high symmetry of the complexes to determine 5f- and 6d-shell contributions to bonding via symmetry arguments. This analysis revealed fluoride ligation to result in strong bonds with a significant covalent character while ligation by chloride and bromide species resulted in more ionic interactions with little differentiation between the ligands. Fluoride ligands were also found to be most capable of perturbing an existing electronic structure. 5f contributions to overlap-driven covalency were found to be larger than 6d contributions for all interactions in all complexes studied while degeneracy-driven covalent contributions showed significantly greater variation. σ-contributions to degeneracy-driven covalency were found to be consistently larger than those of individual π-components while the total π-contribution was, in some cases, larger. Strong correlations were found between overlap-driven covalent bond contributions, U–O vibrational frequencies, and energetic stability, which indicates that overlap-driven covalency leads to bond stabilization in these complexes and that uranyl vibrational frequencies can be used to quantitatively probe equatorial bond covalency. For uranium hexahalides, degeneracy-driven covalency was found to anti-correlate with bond stability.

Quantification of f-element covalency through analysis of the electron density: insights from simulation

The electronic structure of f-element compounds is complex due to a combination of relativistic effects, strong electron correlation and weak crystal field environments. However, a quantitative understanding of bonding in these compounds is becoming increasingly technologically relevant. Recently, bonding interpretations based on analyses of the physically observable electronic density have gained popularity and, in this Feature Article, the utility of such density-based approaches is demonstrated. Application of Bader's Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) is shown to elucidate many properties including bonding trends, orbital overlap and energy degeneracy-driven covalency, oxidation state identification and bond stability, demonstrating the increasingly important role that simulation and analysis play in the area of f-element bond characterisation.

Picomolar Traces of Americium(III) Introduce Drastic Changes in the Structural Chemistry of Terbium(III): A Break in the "Gadolinium Break"

The crystallization of terbium 5,5'-azobis[1H-tetrazol-1-ide] (ZT) in the presence of trace amounts (ca. 50 Bq, ca. 1.6 pmol) of americium results in 1) the accumulation of the americium tracer in the crystalline solid and 2) a material that adopts a different crystal structure to that formed in the absence of americium. Americium-doped [Tb(Am)(H₂ O)₇ ZT]₂ ZT⋅10 H₂ O is isostructural to light lanthanide (Ce-Gd) 5,5'-azobis[1H-tetrazol-1-ide] compounds, rather than to the heavy lanthanide (Tb-Lu) 5,5'-azobis[1H-tetrazol-1-ide] (e.g., [Tb(H₂ O)₈ ]₂ ZT₃ ⋅6 H₂ O) derivatives. Traces of Am seem to force the Tb compound into a structure normally preferred by the lighter lanthanides, despite a 10⁸ -fold Tb excess. The americium-doped material was studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, radiochemical neutron activation analysis, and scanning electron microcopy. In addition, the inclusion properties of terbium 5,5'-azobis[1H-tetrazol-1-ide] towards americium were quantified, and a model for the crystallization process is proposed.

Investigating DNA Radiation Damage Using X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

The biological influence of radiation on living matter has been studied for years; however, several questions about the detailed mechanism of radiation damage formation remain largely unanswered. Among all biomolecules exposed to radiation, DNA plays an important role because any damage to its molecular structure can affect the whole cell and may lead to chromosomal rearrangements resulting in genomic instability or cell death. To identify and characterize damage induced in the DNA sugar-phosphate backbone, in this work we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the P K-edge on DNA irradiated with either UVA light or protons. By combining the experimental results with theoretical calculations, we were able to establish the types and relative ratio of lesions produced by both UVA and protons around the phosphorus atoms in DNA.
