Synergistic Effect of Cation and Anion for Low-Temperature Aqueous Zinc-Ion Battery

Although aqueous zinc-ion batteries have gained great development due to their many merits, the frozen aqueous electrolyte hinders their practical application at low temperature conditions. Here, the synergistic effect of cation and anion to break the hydrogen-bonds network of original water molecules is demonstrated by multi-perspective characterization. Then, an aqueous-salt hydrates deep eutectic solvent of 3.5 M Mg(ClO₄)₂ + 1 M Zn(ClO₄)₂ is proposed and displays an ultralow freezing point of - 121 °C. A high ionic conductivity of 1.41 mS cm^-1 and low viscosity of 22.9 mPa s at - 70 °C imply a fast ions transport behavior of this electrolyte. With the benefits of the low-temperature electrolyte, the fabricated Zn||Pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO) and Zn||Phenazine (PNZ) batteries exhibit satisfactory low-temperature performance. For example, Zn||PTO battery shows a high discharge capacity of 101.5 mAh g^-1 at 0.5 C (200 mA g^-1) and 71 mAh g^-1 at 3 C (1.2 A g^-1) when the temperature drops to - 70 °C. This work provides an unique view to design anti-freezing aqueous electrolyte.

Perchlorate salts confer psychrophilic characteristics in α-chymotrypsin

Studies of salt effects on enzyme activity have typically been conducted at standard temperatures and pressures, thus missing effects which only become apparent under non-standard conditions. Here we show that perchlorate salts, which are found pervasively on Mars, increase the activity of α-chymotrypsin at low temperatures. The low temperature activation is facilitated by a reduced enthalpy of activation owing to the destabilising effects of perchlorate salts. By destabilising α-chymotrypsin, the perchlorate salts also cause an increasingly negative entropy of activation, which drives the reduction of enzyme activity at higher temperatures. We have also shown that α-chymotrypsin activity appears to exhibit an altered pressure response at low temperatures while also maintaining stability at high pressures and sub-zero temperatures. As the effects of perchlorate salts on the thermodynamics of α-chymotrypsin's activity closely resemble those of psychrophilic adaptations, it suggests that the presence of chaotropic molecules may be beneficial to life operating in low temperature environments.

Enhanced Formation of Solvent-Shared Ion Pairs in Aqueous Calcium Perchlorate Solution toward Saturated Concentration or Deep Supercooling Temperature and Its Effects on the Water Structure

As a candidate of Martian salts, calcium perchlorate [Ca(ClO₄)₂] has the potential to stabilize liquid water on the Martian surface because of its hygroscopicity and low freezing temperature when forming aqueous solution. These two properties of electrolytes in general have been suggested to result from the specific cation-anion-water interaction (ion pairing) that interrupts the structure of solvent water. To investigate how this concentration-dependent and temperature-dependent ion pairing process in aqueous Ca(ClO₄)₂ solution leads to its high hygroscopic property and the extreme low eutectic temperature, we have conducted two sets of experiments. First, the effects of concentration on aqueous calcium perchlorate from 3 to 7.86 m on ion pairing were investigated using Raman spectroscopy. Deconvolution of the Raman symmetric stretching band (ν₁) of ClO₄^- showed the enhanced formation of solvent-shared ion pairs upon increasing salt concentration at room temperature. We have confirmed that the low tendency of forming contact ion pairs in concentrated solution contributes to the high hygroscopicity of the salt. Second, the near eutectic samples were studied as a function of temperature by both combined differential scanning calorimetry-Raman spectroscopic experiments and in situ X-ray diffraction. The number of solvent-shared ion pairs was found to increase with decreasing temperature when cooled below the temperature of maximum density of the solution, driven by a change in water toward an ice-like structure in the supercooled regime. The massive presence of solvent-shared ion pairs in turn limits the development of the long-range order in the tetrahedral networks of water molecules, which is responsible for the extremely low eutectic point and deep supercooling effects observed in the Ca(ClO₄)₂-H₂O system.

Co-Poly(ionic liquid) Films via Anion Exchange for the Continuous Tunability of Ion Transport and Wettability

This manuscript details a novel and simple approach to achieve surface-tethered co-poly(ionic liquid) (coPIL) films through the exchange of the resident anion of a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) film with two or more anions. Initially, surface-tethered PIL films were prepared by the surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization of the ionic liquid monomer 3-[(bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-2-yl)methyl]-1,2-dimethylimidazol-3-ium hexafluorophosphate ([N1-dMIm][PF6]) whose PF6 - anion was easily interchanged with aqueous solutions containing a binary mixture of the PF6 - anion, along with perchlorate (ClO4 -) or bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI-) anions. The binary mole fraction of each anion in the film was determined from the infrared spectra of the coPIL films. The thermodynamically driven anion selectivity for exchange from the liquid phase into the coPIL films was determined to follow the order ClO4 - < PF6 - < FSI-. The aqueous wettability of p[N1-dMIm] coPIL films containing both the PF6 - and ClO4 - anions (p[N1-dMIm][PF6][ClO4]) was quantified by contact angle goniometry with the observation that the surface showed an enrichment in the ClO4 - anion compared to the average binary anion mole fraction of ClO4 - in the film (y ClO4 - ). The rate of ion transport through the p[N1-dMIm][PF6][ClO4] coPIL films, quantified by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linearly depends on the binary anion mole fraction of ClO4 - in solution (x ClO4 - ), enabling continuous tunability by over three orders of magnitude for ion conductivity in the coPIL films.
