Observation of the nearly constant loss in super rigid saccharides: in search of a hidden crossover in dynamics deep in the glassy state

Influence of the Internal Structure and Intermolecular Interactions on the Correlation between Structural (α) and Secondary (β-JG) Relaxation below the Glass Transition Temperature in Neat Probucol and Its Binary Mixtures with Modified Saccharides

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) has been used to study the molecular dynamics and aging process in neat probucol (PRO) as well as its binary mixtures with selected acetylated saccharides. In particular, we applied the Casalini and Roland approach to determine structural relaxation times in the glassy state of the examined systems (so-called isostructural times, τ_iso). Next, using the calculated τ_iso, primitive relaxation times of the coupling model were obtained and compared to the experimental secondary β (Johari-Goldstein (JG) type) relaxation times. Interestingly, it turned out that there is a correlation between the β-JG and the structural (α)-relaxation processes below the glass transition temperature (T < T_g) in each investigated sample. This is a new observation compared to previous studies demonstrating that such a relationship exists only in the supercooled liquid state of neat PRO. Moreover, it was revealed that the stretching parameters obtained from the aging procedure are very close to the ones determined by fitting the dielectric data above the T_g with the use of the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function, indicating that the aging process is governed by the α-relaxation. Complementary Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction measurements allowed us to find a possible reason for these findings. It was demonstrated that although there are very weak intermolecular interactions between PRO and modified saccharides, the intra- and intermolecular structure of PRO is practically unaffected by the presence of modified saccharides.

Does the molecular mobility and flexibility of the saccharide ring affect the glass-forming ability of naproxen in binary mixtures?

In this paper, we studied the impact of saccharides having a similar backbone but differing in the degree of freedom, local molecular mobility, flexibility of the ring and intermolecular interactions on the glass-forming ability (GFA) of naproxen (NAP) in binary mixtures. For this purpose, a series of methyl and acetyl derivatives of glucose (GLS) and anhydroglucose (anhGLS), as well as neat anhGLS have been used to produce homogeneous solid dispersions (SDs) of varying molar concentration of examined active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Systematic measurements with the use of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) enabled us to determine the phase transitions, homogeneity and molecular mobility of the investigated binary mixtures as well as the impact of excipient on the crystallization tendency of NAP. It turned out that acetylated glucose (acGLS), one of the most mobile and flexible saccharides of all examined herein materials, is the best excipient enhancing the GFA of studied API. Although, it should be noted that upon storage at room temperature, we observed the recrystallization of NAP from binary mixtures. Interestingly, API always crystallized to the initial polymorphic form, as shown by X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations. Finally, since additional measurements with the use of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy clearly indicated that there are no significant differences in the intermolecular interactions in the systems composed of NAP and all examined saccharides, one can postulate that the mobility and ring flexibility of the matrix have, , the most important impact on the crystallization tendency of NAP upon cooling. Consequently, it seems that in some cases, more mobile/flexible matrices can be a much better choice to enhance the glass-forming ability of studied pharmaceutical.

Studies on dynamics and isomerism in supercooled photochromic compound Aberchrome 670 with the use of different experimental techniques

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Broadband Dielectric (BD) spectroscopies were applied to investigate the thermal, structural, photochemical and dynamical properties of a fulgide-type photochromic compound, Aberchrome 670 (Ab670). In the original crystals, characterized by a pale yellow color, molecules take the E conformation. However, upon UV irradiation of either the crystalline or glassy compound, it isomerizes to the closed (C) form, characterized by the intense red tone. Although, we have found that such conversion is not complete (far below 100%). It was shown that due to UV irradiation as well as heating of the studied fulgide to high temperature (above the melting point), the Z isomer is formed. Further FTIR measurements performed on the UV irradiated and molten compound indicated that upon annealing of the sample in the vicinity of the glass transition temperature the Z isomer reverts back to the original E form. The final confirmation of this supposition has come from BDS studies, where the strong shift of the structural relaxation process during time-dependent isothermal measurements was noticed. One can add that a similar pattern of behavior has been observed previously by some of us in the case of tautomerism or mutarotation [Z. Wojnarowska et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2010, 133, 094507; W. Kossack et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2014, 140, 215101; P. Wlodarczyk et al., J. Phys. Chem. B, 2009, 113, 4379-4383; P. Wlodarczyk et al., J. Non-Cryst. Solids, 2010, 356, 738-742]. From the analysis of the time variation of the structural relaxation times, the activation barrier, E_A = 18 kJ mol^-1, for Z to E isomerization in Ab670 was calculated. Interestingly, it agrees well with the one determined for a similar kind of transformation in stilbenes. Therefore, we found that dielectric spectroscopy can be a very useful technique to track Z to E interconversion in the highly viscous supercooled state. Consequently, a unique opportunity to follow this kind of isomerism at high pressures, high electric fields and under nanometric spatial confinement in pure supercooled compounds appeared.

Emergence of a substrate-temperature-dependent dielectric process in a prototypical vapor deposited hole-transport glass

Since the discovery of ultrastability, vapor deposition has emerged as a relevant tool to further understand the nature of glasses. By this route, the density and average orientation of glasses can be tuned by selecting the proper deposition conditions. Dielectric spectroscopy, on the other hand, is a basic technique to study the properties of glasses at a molecular level, probing the dynamics of dipoles or charge carriers. Here, and for the first time, we explore the dielectric behavior of vapor deposited N,N-Diphenyl-N,N’bis(methylphenyl)-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamines (TPD), a prototypical hole-transport material, prepared at different deposition temperatures. We report the emergence of a new relaxation process which is not present in the ordinary glass. We associate this process to the Maxwell-Wagner polarization observed in heterogeneous systems, and induced by the enhanced mobility of charge carriers in the more ordered vapor deposited glasses. Furthermore, the associated activation energy establishes a clear distinction between two families of glasses, depending on the selected substrate-temperature range. This finding positions dielectric spectroscopy as a unique tool to investigate the structural and electronic properties of charge transport materials and remarks the importance of controlling the deposition conditions, historically forgotten in the preparation of optoelectronic devices.

Effects of atomic interaction stiffness on low-temperature relaxation of amorphous solids

While low-temperature relaxations show significant differences among metallic glasses with different compositions, the underlying mechanism remains mysterious. Using molecular dynamics simulation, low-temperature relaxation of amorphous solids is investigated in model systems with different atomic interaction stiffness. It was found that as the interaction stiffness increases, the low-temperature relaxation is enhanced. The fraction of mobile atoms increases with increasing interaction stiffness, while the length scale of dynamical heterogeneity does not change. The enhanced relaxation may be due to increased dynamical heterogeneity. These findings provide a physical picture for better understanding the origin of low-temperature relaxation dynamics in amorphous solids, and the experimentally observed different β-relaxation behaviors in various metallic glasses.
