Abstract
Many unique adsorption properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been revealed by diffraction crystallography, visualizing their vacant and guest-loaded crystal structures at the molecular scale. However, it has been challenging to see the spatial distribution of the adsorption behaviors throughout a single MOF particle in a transient equilibrium state. Here, we report three-dimensional (3D) visualization of molecular adsorption behaviors in a single crystalline particle of a MOF by in situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy combined with computed tomography for the first time. The 3D maps of water-coordinated Co sites in a 100 μm-scale MOF-74-Co crystal were obtained with 1 μm spatial resolution under several water vapor pressures. Through the visualization of the water vapor adsorption process, 3D spectroimaging revealed the mechanism and spatial heterogeneity of guest adsorption inside a single particle of a crystalline MOF.

Abstract
The benzonitrile solvate {[{Au(C6F5)2}2{Pb(terpy)}]·NCPh}n (1) (terpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine) displays reversible reorientation and coordination of the benzonitrile molecule to lead upon external stimuli. High-pressure X-ray diffraction studies between 0 and 2.1 GPa reveal a 100% of conversion without loss of symmetry, which is totally reversible upon decompression. By variable-temperature X-ray diffraction studies between 100 and 285 K, a partial coordination is achieved.

Abstract
Highly brilliant synchrotron source is indispensable to track pressure-induced phenomena in confined crystalline samples in megabar range. In this article, a number of experimental variables affecting the quality high-pressure single-crystal x-ray diffraction data is discussed. An overview of the recent advancements in x-ray diffraction techniques at extreme conditions, in the frame of European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF)- Extremely Bright Source (EBS), is presented. Particularly, ID15b and ID27 beamlines have profited from the source upgrade, allowing for measurements of a few-micron crystals in megabar range. In case of ID27, a whole new beamline has been devised, including installation of double-multilayer mirrors and double crystal monochromator and construction of custom-made experimental stations. Two case studies from ID27 and ID15b are presented. Hypervalent CsI3crystals, studied up to 24 GPa, have shown a series of phase transitions:Pnma → P-3c1→ Pm-3n. First transition leads to formation of orthogonal linear iodine chains made of I3-. Transformation to the cubic phase at around 21.7 GPa leads to equalization of interatomic I-I distances and formation of homoleptic Inm-chains. The second study investigates elastic properties and structure of jadarite, which undergoes isosymmetric phase transition around 16.6 GPa. Despite a few-micron crystal size, twinning and dramatic loss of crystal quality, associated with pressure-induced phase transitions, crystal structures of both compounds have been determined in a straightforward matter, thanks to the recent developments within ESRF-EBS.

How to Quench Ferromagnetic Ordering in a CN-Bridged Ni(II)-Nb(IV) Molecular Magnet? A Combined High-Pressure Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction and Magnetic Study. MAGNETOCHEMISTRY 2019. Abstract
High-pressure (HP) structural and magnetic properties of a magnetic coordination polymer {[NiII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Ni2Nb) are presented, discussed and compared with its two previously reported analogs {[MnII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Mn2Nb) and {[FeII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Fe2Nb). Ni2Nb shows a significant decrease of the long-range ferromagnetic ordering under high pressure when compared to Mn2Nb, where the pressure enhances the Tc (magnetic ordering temperature), or to Fe2Nb exhibiting a pressure-induced spin crossover. The different HP magnetic responses of the three compounds were rationalized and correlated with the structural models as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Probing the origin of the giant magnetic anisotropy in trigonal bipyramidal Ni(ii) under high pressure. Chem Sci 2018; 9:1551-1559. Abstract
Understanding and controlling magnetic anisotropy at the level of a single metal ion is vital if the miniaturisation of data storage is to continue to evolve into transformative technologies. Magnetic anisotropy is essential for a molecule-based magnetic memory as it pins the magnetic moment of a metal ion along the easy axis. Devices will require deposition of magnetic molecules on surfaces, where changes in molecular structure can significantly alter magnetic properties. Furthermore, if we are to use coordination complexes with high magnetic anisotropy as building blocks for larger systems we need to know how magnetic anisotropy is affected by structural distortions. Here we study a trigonal bipyramidal nickel(ii) complex where a giant magnetic anisotropy of several hundred wavenumbers can be engineered. By using high pressure, we show how the magnetic anisotropy is strongly influenced by small structural distortions. Using a combination of high pressure X-ray diffraction, ab initio methods and high pressure magnetic measurements, we find that hydrostatic pressure lowers both the trigonal symmetry and axial anisotropy, while increasing the rhombic anisotropy. The ligand-metal-ligand angles in the equatorial plane are found to play a crucial role in tuning the energy separation between the d x2-y2 and d xy orbitals, which is the determining factor that controls the magnitude of the axial anisotropy. These results demonstrate that the combination of high pressure techniques with ab initio studies is a powerful tool that gives a unique insight into the design of systems that show giant magnetic anisotropy.
