Metal Complexes in the Synthesis of Biodegradable Polymers: Achievements and Prospects

This review describes recent advances in the synthesis of homopolymers of lactide and related cyclic esters via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) in the presence of metal complexes based on group 1, 2, 4, 12, 13 and 14 metals. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the initiator structure on the properties of the obtaining homo- and copolymers. Also, a separate chapter is devoted to the study of metal complexes in the synthesis of copolymers of lactide and lactones. This review highlights the efforts made over the last ten years or so, and shows how main-group metals have received increasing attention in the field of the polymerization of lactide and related cyclic esters.

Aluminum Salen Complexes Modified with Unsaturated Alcohol: Synthesis, Characterization, and Their Activity towards Ring-Opening Polymerization of ε-Caprolactone and D,L-Lactide

A highly efficient one-step approach to the macromonomer synthesis using modified aluminum complexes as catalysts of ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone and D,L-lactide was developed. The syntheses, structures, and catalytic activities of a wide range of aluminum salen complexes, 3a-c, functionalized with unsaturated alcohol (HO(CH₂)₄OCH=CH₂) are reported. X-Ray diffraction studies revealed a tetragonal pyramidal structure for 3c. Among the complexes 3a-c, the highest activity in bulk ROP of ε-caprolactone and D,L-lactide was displayed by 3b, affording polyesters with controlled molecular weights at low monomer to initiator ratios (M_n up to 15,000 g mol^-1), relatively high polydispersities (Ð~1.8) and high number-average functionalities (F_n up to 85%).

The interpretation of small molecule diffusion coefficients: Quantitative use of diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy

Measuring accurate molecular self-diffusion coefficients, D, by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques has become routine as hardware, software and experimental methodologies have all improved. However, the quantitative interpretation of such data remains difficult, particularly for small molecules. This review article first provides a description of, and explanation for, the failure of the Stokes-Einstein equation to accurately predict small molecule diffusion coefficients, before moving on to three broadly complementary methods for their quantitative interpretation. Two are based on power laws, but differ in the nature of the reference molecules used. The third addresses the uncertainties in the Stokes-Einstein equation directly. For all three methods, a wide range of examples are used to show the range of chemistry to which diffusion NMR can be applied, and how best to implement the different methods to obtain quantitative information from the chemical systems studied.

Heterolepic β-Ketoiminate Zinc Phenoxide Complexes as Efficient Catalysts for the Ring Opening Polymerization of Lactide

Zinc phenoxide complexes L1ZnOAr 1-4 (L1=Me2NC2H4NC(Me)CHC(Me)O) and L2ZnOAr 5-8 (L2=Me2NC3H6NC(Me)CHC(Me)O) with donor-functionalized β-ketoiminate ligands (L1/2) and OAr substituents (Ar=Ph 1, 5; 2,6-Me2-C6H3 2, 6; 3,5-Me2-C6H3 3, 7; 4-Bu-C6H4 4, 8) with tuneable electronic and steric properties were synthesized and characterized. 1-8 adopt binuclear structures in the solid state except for 5, while they are monomeric in CDCl3 solution. 1-8 are active catalysts for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide (LA) in CH2Cl2 at ambient temperature and the catalytic activity is controlled by the electronic and steric properties of the OAr substituent, yielding polymers with high average molecular weight (M n) and moderately controlled molecular weight distribution (MWDs). 1 and 5 showed a living polymerization character and kinetic studies on the ROP of L-LA with 1 and 5 proved first order dependencies on the monomer concentration. Homonuclear decoupled 1H-NMR analyses of polylactic acid (PLA) formed with rac-LA proved isotactic enrichment of the PLA microstructure.

Oxidation of Methylalumoxane Oligomers

The anions formed from methylalumoxane (MAO) and suitable donors (e.g. octamethyltrisiloxane) are amenable to mass spectrometric (MS) analysis. Their composition as deduced from this data allows direct insight into the chemical transformations of their neutral precursors. One such process is oxidation, which is well-known to be facile for MAO without any clear idea of what actually occurs at a molecular level. Addition of O₂ to MAO results in immediate gelation, but MS analysis reveals no corresponding change to the composition of the principal oligomeric anions. A slow (hours) reaction does occur that involves net incorporation of Me₂ AlOMe into the oligomeric anions, and the identities of the OMe-containing anions were confirmed by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy, MS/MS analysis, and addition of an authentic sample of Me₂ AlOMe to MAO. The result tallies with the fact that addition of O₂ to MAO produces Me₂ AlOMe from free Me₃ Al which eventually leads to formation of oxidized MAO oligomers and changes in ion abundance. Aging of the oxygenated MAO results in further growth of the oligomers similar to that of the non-oxidized species. Mass spectrometric analysis therefore reveals useful insights into the environmental history of a given MAO batch.
