Abstract
This article dealt with the ruthenium and osmium derivatives of isomeric 1H-indazole-3-carboxylic acid/2H-indazole-3-carboxylic acid (H2L1) and 1H-benzimidazole-2-carboxylic acid (H2L2) along with the π-acidic bpy (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and pap (pap = 2-phenylazopyridine) co-ligands. It thus extended structurally authenticated monomeric ([(bpy)2RuII(HL1-)]ClO4 [1]ClO4, (pap)2RuII(L12-) 2, (bpy)2OsII(L12-) 3, (pap)2OsII(L12-) 4, (bpy)2RuII(L22-) 5, (bpy)2OsII(L22-) 8, and (pap)2OsII(L22-) 9) and dimeric ([(bpy)2RuII(μ-L22-)RuII(bpy)2](ClO4)2 [6](ClO4)2) complexes. It also described modified L2'2- (L2'2- = 2,2'-bisbenzimidazolate)-bridged [(pap)2RuII(μ-L2'2-)RuII(pap)2](ClO4)2 [7](ClO4)2, where L2'2- was developed selectively with the {Ru(pap)2} metal fragment via in situ intermolecular C-C coupling of the two units of decarboxylated benzimidazolate. Moreover, chemical oxidation (OsII to OsIII) of (bpy)2OsII(L12-) 3 (E0 = 0.11 V versus SCE) and (bpy)2OsII(L22-) 8 (E0 = 0.12 V versus SCE) by AgClO4 yielded unprecedented OsIII-AgI derived polymeric {[(bpy)2OsIII-L12--AgI(CH3CN)](ClO4)2}n {[10](ClO4)2}n and dimeric [(bpy)2OsIII-L22--AgI(CH3CN)](ClO4)2 [11](ClO4)2 complexes as a function of trans and cis orientations of the active N2 donor with special reference to the carboxylate O2 of L2-, respectively. Microscopic (FE-SEM, TEM-EDX, and AFM) and DLS experiments suggested a homogeneously dispersed hollow spherical shaped morphology of {[10](ClO4)2}n with an average particle size of 200-400 nm as well as its non-dissociative feature in the aprotic medium. Experimental (structure, spectroscopy, and electrochemistry) and theoretical (DFT/TD-DFT) explorations revealed a redox non-innocent feature of L2- in the present coordination situations and the selective anion sensing (X = F-, CN-, and OAc-) event of [1]ClO4 involving a free NH group at the backface of HL1-, which proceeded via the NH···X hydrogen bonding interaction.

Abstract
The article deals with the newer classes of mononuclear: [(acac)2RuIII(H-Iz)(Iz-)] 1, [(acac)2RuIII(H-Iz)2]ClO4 [1]ClO4/[1']ClO4, and [(bpy)2RuII(H-Iz)(Iz-)]ClO4 [2]ClO4, mixed-valent unsymmetric dinuclear: [(acac)2RuIII(μ-Iz-)2RuII(bpy)2]ClO4 [3]ClO4, and heterotrinuclear: [(acac)2RuIII(μ-Iz-)2MII(μ-Iz-)2RuIII(acac)2] (M = Co:4a, Ni:4b, Cu:4c, and Zn:4d) complexes (H-Iz = indazole, Iz- = indazolate, acac = acetylacetonate, and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Structural characterization of all the aforestated complexes established their molecular identities including varying binding modes (Na and Nb donors and 1H-indazole versus 2H-indazole) of the heterocyclic H-Iz/Iz- in the complexes. Unlike [1']ClO4 containing two NH protons at the backface of H-Iz units, the corresponding [1]ClO4 was found to be unstable due to the deprotonation of its positively charged quaternary nitrogen center, and this resulted in the eventual formation of the parent complex 1. A combination of experimental and density functional theory calculations indicated the redox noninnocent feature of Iz- in the complexes along the redox chain. The absence of intervalence charge transfer transition in the near-infrared region of the (Iz-)2-bridged unsymmetric mixed-valent RuIIIRuII state in [3]ClO4 suggested negligible intramolecular electronic coupling corresponding to a class I setup (Robin and Day classification). Heterotrinuclear complexes (4a-4d) exhibited varying spin configurations due to spin-spin interactions between the terminal Ru(III) ions and the central M(II) ion. Though both [3]ClO4 and 4a-4d displayed ligand (Iz-/Iz•)-based oxidation, reductions were preferentially taken place at the bpy and metal (RuIII/RuII) centers, respectively. Unlike 1 or [2]ClO4 containing one free NH proton at the backface of H-Iz, [1']ClO4 with two H-Iz units could selectively and effectively recognize F-, OAc-, and CN- among the tested anions: F-, OAc-, CN-, Cl-, Br-, I-, SCN-, HSO4-, and Η2PΟ4- in CH3CN via intermolecular NH···anion hydrogen bonding interaction. The difference in the sensing feature between [1']ClO4 and 1/[2]ClO4 could be rationalized by their pKa values of 8.4 and 11.3/10.8, respectively.

Abstract
The present work aimed to obtain discrete heavier metal complexes of unperturbed deprotonated bis-lawsone (hinge-like H2L = 2,2'-bis(3-hydroxy-1,4-napthoquinone). This is primarily due to its limited examples with lighter metal ions (Co, Zn, and Ga) and the fact that our earlier approach with the osmium ion facilitated its functionalisation. Herein, we demonstrated the successful synthesis and structural characterisation of L2--derived diruthenium [(bpy)2RuII(μ-L2-)RuII(bpy)2](ClO4)2 [1](ClO4)2 (S = 0), (acac)2RuIII(μ-L2-)RuIII(acac)22 (S = 1) and monoruthenium (pap)2Ru(L2-) 3 (S = 0) derivatives (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, acac = acetylacetonate, and pap = 2-phenylazopyridine). The crystal structures established that (i) O,O-/O,O- donating five-membered bis-bidentate and O-,O- donating seven-membered bidentate chelating modes of deprotonated L2- in rac (ΔΔ/ΛΛ) diastereomeric [1](ClO4)2, 2 and 3, respectively. (ii) The L2- bridging unit in [1](ClO4)2, 2 and 3 underwent twisting its two naphthoquinone rings with respect to the ring connecting C-C bond by 73.01°, 62.15° and 59.12°, respectively. (iii) Intermolecular π-π interactions (∼3.5 Å) between the neighbouring molecules. The paramagnetic complex 2 (S = 1) with two non-interacting Ru(III) (S = 1/2) ions exhibited weak antiferromagnetic coupling only at very low temperatures. In agreement with the magnetic results, 2 displayed typical RuIII-based anisotropic EPR in CH3CN (<g>/Δg: 2.314/0.564) but without any forbidden g1/2 signal at 120 K. The complexes exhibited multiple redox processes in CH3CN in the experimental potential window of ± 2.0 V versus SCE. The analysis of the redox steps via a combined experimental and theoretical (DFT/TD-DFT) approach revealed the involvement of L2- to varying extents in both the oxidative and reductive processes as a consequence of its bidirectional redox non-innocent feature. The mixing of the frontier orbitals of the metal ion and L2- due to their closeness in energy indeed led to the resonating electronic form in certain redox states instead of any precise electronic structural state.

Abstract
We report the first example of anion-selective disassembly of conducting polymers. With polymer-modified electrodes, such an externally triggered macroscopic transition leads to ON-OFF binary signaling of a chemical fuse as a preventive measure against specific chemicals in solution. This unprecedented mode of operation is driven by N-HX- hydrogen bonding of biimidazole units fused orthogonally onto the polythiophene backbone, and conveniently monitored by a simple electrical setup without the need for a sophisticated optical device.

Abstract
The odd-electron compounds [M(bpy)2(L1)](ClO4) M = Ru ([1](ClO4)) or Os ([2](ClO4)), and the even-electron species [M(bpy)2(H2L2)](ClO4)2, M = Ru ([3](ClO4)2) or Os ([4](ClO4)2) were obtained from pyrene-4,5-dione, L1, or 4,5-diaminopyrene, H4L2, and were characterised structurally, electrochemically and spectroscopically. Experimental and computational analysis (TD-DFT) revealed rather different electronic structures and spin distributions of the paramagnetic monocations 1+-4+. EPR investigations and electronic absorption studies exhibit increasing metal contributions to the singly occupied MO along the series 1+ < 3+ < 4+ < 2+, illustrated by g value and long-wavelength absorbance. In addition to variations of the metal (Ru,Os) and the donor atoms (O,NH) the extension of the π system of the semiquinone-type ligand has a large effect on the electronic structure of the paramagnetic cations.

Abstract
The title complexes were isolated as structurally characterised compounds [OsII(9-OP)L2]ClO4, L = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 2-phenylazopyridine (pap), and were compared with ruthenium analogues. A reversible one-electron oxidation and up to three reduction processes were observed by voltammetry (CV, DPV) and spectroelectrochemistry (UV-vis-NIR, partially EPR). Supporting calculations (DFT, TD-DFT) were used to assess the oxidation state combinations of the different redox active ligands and of the metal, revealing the effects of Os versus Ru exchange and of bpy versus pap acceptor ligation. Several unexpected consequences of these variations were observed for members of the new osmium-containing redox series. Remarkably, the EPR results exhibit a clear dichotomy between the complex ion [OsIII(9-OP-)(bpy)2]2+ and the radical species [OsII(9-OP˙)(pap)2]2+, which has not been similarly observed for the analogous [RuIII(9-OP-)L2]2+ systems. This difference, unprecedented for 5dn systems, is attributed to the superior stabilisation of the OsII state by the strongly π-accepting pap ligands. The reduced forms [OsII(9-OP-)(pap˙-)(pap)] and [OsII(9-OP-)(pap˙-)2]- exhibit strong inter-ligand interactions, leading to spin isomers and electron hopping.

Abstract
Phosphorescent metal complexes with peripheral N-H donor functionalities have attracted great attention as potential molecular sensing units for anionic species lately. In this contribution we discuss the development and potential of anion recognition and sensing features of recent examples of luminescent 2,2'-biimidazole complexes of ruthenium(II), iridium(III), osmium(II) and cobalt(III). The general dependency of photophysical features in these complexes regarding the acid-base chemistry of the peripheral N-H functionalities will be outlined as a basic requirement for optical ion recognition. Systematic strategies for the tuning and specific improvement by synthetic means will be discussed regarding recent reports. With respect to their distinct photophysical features, different transition metals are considered individually to demonstrate particular trends regarding ligand modification within the respective groups. In summary, this review elucidates the current state-of-the-art and future potential of the versatile class of 2,2'-biimidazole based sensor chromophores.

Abstract
The reaction of ctc-Os(II)(pap)2Cl2 (pap = 2-phenylazopyridine, ctc = cis-trans-cis with respect to chlorides and pyridine/azo nitrogens of pap, respectively) and ambidentate 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-diol (H2L) leads to the simultaneous formation of isomeric [Os(II)(pap)2(HL(-))](+) ((2+)/(3+)), seven-membered chelate containing Os(II)(pap)2(L(2-)) (4) and diastereomeric [{Os(II)(pap)2}2(μ-L(2-))](2+) (5a(2+) (meso, ΔΛ)/5b(2+) (rac, ΔΔ/ΛΛ)). The reaction of 2,2'-biphenol (H2L') and ctc-Os(II)(pap)2Cl2 yields Os(II)(pap)2(L'(2-)) (6), an analogue of 4. The identities of the newly designed complexes have been established by different analytical, spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction techniques. (1)H-NMR spectra of the complexes and single crystal X-ray structures of selective derivatives [2]ClO4, [3]ClO4, [5a](ClO4)2, and 6 establish the retention of the tc-configuration of the precursor {Os(pap)2}. In isomeric 2(+) and 3(+), monodeprotonated HL(-) is linked to the {Os(II)(pap)2} fragment through N,N and N,O(-) donors, resulting in nearly planar five- and six-membered chelates with O-HO(-) and O-HN hydrogen bonds at its back face, respectively. The O(-),O(-) donating L'(2-) extends a severely twisted seven-membered chelate with the {Os(pap)2} unit in 6. The N,O(-)/O(-),N donors of deprotonated L(2-) bridge the two {Os(II)(pap)2} units in a symmetric fashion in 5a(2+), forming two moderately twisted six-membered chelates. Though the deprotonation of the O-HN hydrogen bond in (+) by another unit of {Os(II)(pap)2} generates a diastereomeric mixture of 5a(2+) and 5b(2+), attempts to deprotonate the relatively stronger O-H···O(-) hydrogen bond in 2(+) have failed. The isomeric 2(+)/3(+), seven-membered chelate containing 4/6 and diastereomeric 5a(2+)/5b(2+) exhibit distinctive (1)H-NMR and absorption spectra as well as electrochemical responses. The pap (N[double bond, length as m-dash]N) based two successive reductions and the participation of HL(-), L(2-), L'(2-) in the oxidation processes of the respective complexes have been revealed using EPR and DFT calculated MOs and Mulliken spin density plots at the intermediate paramagnetic states.

Abstract
The present article deals with the structurally, spectroscopically and electrochemically characterised osmium-bipyridyl derived complexes [(bpy)2Os(II)(HL1)Cl]ClO4 [1]ClO4 and [(bpy)2Os(II)(HL2)Cl]ClO4 [2]ClO4 incorporating neutral and monodentate pyrazole derivatives (HL) with one free NH function (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, HL1 = pyrazole, HL2 = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole). The crystal structures of [1]ClO4 and [2]ClO4 reveal intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the free NH proton of HL and the equatorially placed Cl(-) ligand (N-HCl) with donor-acceptor distances of 3.114(7) Å and 3.153(6) Å as well as intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the NH proton and one of the oxygen atoms of ClO4(-) (N-HO) with donor-acceptor distances of 2.870(10) Å and 3.024(8) Å, respectively. The effect of hydrogen bonding interactions has translated into the less acidic nature of the NH proton of the coordinated HL with estimated pKa > 12. 1(+) and 2(+) exhibit reversible Os(II)/(III) and irreversible Os(III)/(IV) processes in CH3CN within ± 2.0 V versus SCE. The effect of 3,5-dimethyl substituted HL2 on 2(+) has been reflected in the appreciable lowering (40 mV) of the Os(II/III) potential, along with the further decrease in the acidity of the NH proton (pKa > 13.0) with regard to HL1 coordinated 1(+) (pKa: ∼ 12.3). The electronic spectral features of Os(ii) (1(+)/2(+)) and electrochemically generated Os(III) (1(2+)/2(2+)) derived complexes have been analysed by TD-DFT calculations. The efficacy of the 1(+) and 2(+) encompassing free NH proton towards the anion recognition process has been evaluated by different experimental investigations using a wide variety of anions. It however establishes that receptor 1(+) can recognise both F(-) and OAc(-) in acetonitrile solution, while 2(+) is exclusively selective for the F(-) ion.
