Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties of Push-Pull Oligo(ferrocenyl-phenyleneethynylene)s: Supramolecular Orders in Molecular Films

We report on the optoelectronic properties of a series of unsymmetrical π-conjugated phenyleneethynylene macromolecules bearing ferrocene (Fc) as the electron-donor group (D), (benzyl) benzoate (Bz) or benzoic acid (Ac) as the electron attractor group (A) and connected through 2,5-di(alcoxy) phenyleneethynylene(s) (nPE) with n = 1, 2, 3 as π-conjugated bridges. In the series, by increasing the distance between the electron-attracting and electron-donor groups, the push-pull effect decreases. The intramolecular charge transfer (D → π → A) was evaluated by static and dynamic spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations. The longest oligomer Fc3PEBz formed the best optical quality films. A study at the atomic level by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) revealed that the molecules self-assemble on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) in domains with a short-range order. Films are mesoporous and the molecules arrange in a lamellar-like pattern, with an edge-on conformation with respect to HOPG, where the conjugated backbones lie parallel to the surface. Two different assemblies were identified in the monoatomic film, which depends on the ferrocene-ferrocene or benzyl-benzyl interactions.

A Ag2CO3/TFA-catalyzed intramolecular annulation approach to imidazo[1,2-c][1,3]oxazin-5-one derivatives

A series of 2,7-disubstituted 3-methylimidazo[1,2-c][1,3]oxazin-5-ones were synthesized in good yields via Ag₂CO₃/TFA-mediated intramolecular annulation of N-Boc-2-alkynyl-4-bromo(alkynyl)-5-methylimidazoles. This methodology was carried out in the presence of a catalytic amount of silver carbonate and trifluoroacetic acid in dichloroethane at 60 °C. In all experiments, only the six-membered ring product was obtained since the possible five-membered compound was not observed, proving the high regioselectivity of this approach. A complementary computational study was performed in order to rationalize the mechanism of 6-endo-dig heterocycle formation. In addition, 2-bromo-3-methyl-7-phenylimidazo[1,2-c][1,3]oxazin-5-one was used as a building block to synthesize a small library of new 2-substituted imidazo[1,2-c][1,3]oxazin-5-one derivatives through the Suzuki, Sonogashira and Heck cross coupling reactions.

Computationally approached inhibition potential of Tinospora cordifolia towards COVID-19 targets

The recent emergence of novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has been a major threat to human society, as the challenge of finding suitable drug or vaccine is not met till date. With increasing morbidity and mortality, the need for novel drug candidates is under great demand. The investigations are progressing towards COVID-19 therapeutics. Among the various strategies employed, the use of repurposed drugs is competing along with novel drug inventions. Based on the therapeutic significance, the chemical constituents from the extract of Tinospora cordifolia belonging to various classes like alkaloids, lignans, steroids and terpenoids are investigated as potential drug candidates for COVID-19. The inhibition potential of the proposed compounds against viral spike protein and human receptor ACE2 were evaluated by computational molecular modeling (Auto dock), along with their ADME/T properties. Prior to docking, the initial geometry of the compounds were optimized by Density functional theory (DFT) method employing B3LYP hybrid functional and 6-311 +  + G (d,p) basis set. The results of molecular docking and ADME/T studies have revealed 6 constituents as potential drug candidates that can inhibit the binding of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein with the human receptor ACE2 protein. The narrowed down list of constituents from Tinospora cordifolia paved way for further tuning their ability to inhibit COVID-19 by modifying the chemical structures and by employing computational geometry optimization and docking methods.

Probing Electronic Communication and Excited-State Dynamics in the Unprecedented Ferrocene-Containing Zinc MB-DIPY

The electronic communication between two ferrocene groups in the electron-deficient expanded aza-BODIPY analogue of zinc manitoba-dipyrromethene (MB-DIPY) was probed by spectroscopic, electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and theoretical methods. The excited-state dynamics involved sub-ps formation of the charge-separated state in the organometallic zinc MB-DIPYs, followed by recovery of the ground state via charge recombination in 12 ps. The excited-state behavior was contrasted with that observed in the parent complex that lacked the ferrocene electron donors and has a much longer excited-state lifetime (670 ps for the singlet state). Much longer decay times observed for the parent complex without ferrocene confirm that the main quenching mechanism in the ferrocene-containing 4 is reflective of the ultrafast ferrocene-to-MB-DIPY core charge transfer (CT).
