Abstract
Herein, we report that (S,S)-prophenolMg2(μ-OnBu)(THF)2 ((S,S)-1, prophenol = (S,S)-2,6-bis[2-(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl]-4-methylphenol) is a highly enantioselective (kR/kS = 140) precatalyst for ring-opening polymerization of rac-β-butyrolactone (β-BL) to isotactic poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (i-PHB), a high performance, biodegradable polyester. Precatalyst (S,S)-1 polymerizes (R)-β-BL with an inversion of stereochemistry to (S)-PHB with a m% (percentage of adjacent linkages with a meso configuration) of 98% at 41% conversion and Tm of 165 °C under a variety of conditions. Complex (S,S)-1 demonstrates unique polymerization kinetics, as it does not polymerize the preferred enantiomer, (R)-β-BL, alone. Mechanistic studies revealed that (S)-β-BL is needed to convert (S,S)-1 into the active enantioselective polymerization catalyst. To the best of our knowledge, (S,S)-1 produces i-PHB with the highest degree of isotacticity observed from a polymerization of rac-β-BL. This study informs the design and understanding of future enantioselective and earth-abundant metal catalysts for ring-opening polymerization of β-lactones.

Abstract
The use of multimetallic complexes is a rapidly advancing route to enhance catalyst performance in the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters and ethers. Multimetallic catalysts often outperform their monometallic analogues in terms of reactivity and/or polymerization control, and these improvements are typically attributed to "multimetallic cooperativity". Yet the origins of multimetallic cooperativity often remain unclear. This review explores the key factors underpinning multimetallic cooperativity, including metal-metal distances, the flexibility, electronics and conformation of the ligand framework, and the coordination environment of the metal centers. Emerging trends are discussed to provide insights into why cooperativity occurs and how to harness cooperativity for the development of highly efficient multimetallic catalysts.

Abstract
By development of ProPhenol/Ti(IV) catalysts, a catalytic enantioselective hydroxylative dearomatization of naphthols is achieved by using TBHP as a simple oxidative reagent. The side coordinative chain equipped on the C1-position of β-naphthols plays an important role for initiating this asymmetric hydroxylative reaction, which might be a result of the proper cocoordination effects to the titanium center in the catalyst. A reasonable catalytic cycle is proposed, the catalytic system is applied to a reasonable range of this type of phenolic compound, and related concise transformations are carried out.

Abstract
Nine new complexes based on thioether appended iminophenolate (ONS) ligands have been prepared and fully characterized in solution by NMR spectroscopy. Solid-state structures were also obtained for seven complexes. In solution, all complexes were monomeric. The complexes were highly active for the polymerization of purified rac-lactide ([M] : [Zn] : [BnOH] = 10 000 : 1 : 30 at 180 °C) reaching TOF values up to 250 000 h−1. The kinetics of the polymerization have been probed by in situ Raman spectroscopy. The rate of reaction was dramatically reduced using technical grade rac-lactide with increased initiator loading. To move towards a circular economy, it is vital that catalysts are developed to facilitate chemical recycling of commodity and emerging polymeric materials. In this vein, the complexes have been assessed for their ability to break down poly(lactic acid) and poly(ethylene terephthalate). The results from both the polymerization and degradation reactions are discussed in terms of ligand functionality. Nine new complexes based on thioether appended iminophenolate (ONS) ligands have been prepared and fully characterized in solution by NMR spectroscopy.![]()

Abstract
Heterometallic cooperativity is an emerging strategy to elevate polymerisation catalyst performance. Here, we report the first heterotrimetallic Na/Zn2 and K/Zn2 complexes supported by a ProPhenol ligand, which deliver “best of both” in cyclic ester ring-opening polymerisation, combining the outstanding activity (Na/K) and good control (Zn2) of homometallic analogues. Detailed NMR studies and density-functional theory calculations suggest that the Na/Zn2 and K/Zn2 complexes retain their heterometallic structures in the solution-state. To the best of our knowledge, the K/Zn2 analogue is the most active heterometallic catalyst reported for rac-lactide polymerisation (kobs = 1.7 × 10−2 s−1), giving activities five times faster than the Na/Zn2 complex. These versatile catalysts also display outstanding performance in ε-caprolatone and δ-valerolactone ring-opening polymerisation. These studies provide underpinning methodologies for future heterometallic polymerisation catalyst design, both in cyclic ester polymerisation and other ring-opening (co)polymerisation reactions. Cooperative heterotrimetallic Na/Zn2 and K/Zn2 complexes combine the excellent activities and control of the homometallic analogues, giving “best of both” in cyclic ester ring-opening polymerisation.![]()

Abstract
The preparation of heterodinuclear complexes, especially those comprising early-late transition metals coordinated by a simple or symmetrical ancillary ligand, represents a fundamental challenge and an opportunity to prepare catalysts benefitting from synergic properties. Here, two new mixed titanium(iv)-zinc(ii) complexes, [LTi(OiPr)2ZnEt] and [LTi(OiPr)2ZnPh], both coordinated by a diphenolate tetra(amine) macrocyclic ligand (L), are prepared. The synthesis benefits from the discovery that reaction of the ligand with a single equivalent of titanium tetrakis(iso-propoxide) allows the efficient formation of a mono-Ti(iv) complex, [LTi(OiPr)2]. All new complexes are characterized by a combination of single crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques. The two heterobimetallic complexes, [LTi(OiPr)2ZnEt] and [LTi(OiPr)2ZnPh], feature trianionic coordination by the macrocyclic ligand and bridging alkoxide groups coordinate to both the different metal centres. The heterodinuclear catalysts are compared to the mono-titanium analogue, [LTi(OiPr)2], in various polymerization reactions. In the alternating copolymerizations of carbon dioxide and cyclohexene oxide, the mono-titanium complex is totally inactive whilst the heterodinuclear complexes show moderate activity (TOF = 3 h-1); it should be noted the activity is measured using just 1 bar pressure of carbon dioxide. In the ring opening polymerization of lactide and ε-caprolactone, the mono-Ti(iv) complex is totally inactive whilst the heterodinuclear complexes show moderate-high activities, qualified by comparison to other known titanium polymerization catalysts (l-lactide, kobs = 11 × 10-4 s-1 at 70 °C, 1 M in [lactide]) and ε-caprolactone (kobs = 5 × 10-4 s-1 at 70 °C, 0.9 M in [ε-caprolactone]).

Abstract
A series of novel mononuclear (1a-7a and 1b-6b) as well as tetranuclear (8a and 9a) niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta) complexes of benzotriazole or benzoxazole phenoxide pro-ligands bearing different substituents at the ortho and para positions of the phenol rings were synthesized and characterized. The reaction of NbCl5 or TaCl5 with one equivalent of benzotriazole or benzoxazole phenoxide pro-ligands (L1H-L6H) in dry toluene or chloroform produced the corresponding chloride (1a-6a and 1b-6b) and ethoxy (7a) mononuclear Nb and Ta complexes in high yields. Furthermore, from the mononuclear Nb complexes (1a or 4a), a new structural form of tetrameric niobium complexes (8a and 9a) was synthesized through a controlled hydrolysis reaction. The molecular structures of complexes 1b, 4b, 7a, 8a and 9a were unambiguously confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Furthermore, all these complexes (1a-9a and 1b-6b) were tested as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) of glycidol to synthesize hyperbranched polyglycerols (HPG) by using 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)propane (TMP) as an initiator. The degree of branching (DB) observed was 0.30-0.54, which is an indication of hyperbranched structures. In particular, for the niobium complex with electron-withdrawing substituents on the benzoxazole phenoxide pro-ligand (5a), we achieved superior behavior for the ROP of glycidol in terms of activity, control of molecular weight (Mn) and molecular weight distributions (MWDs) (92% of glycidol to HPG, Mn = 10.52 kg mol-1, MWDs <1.33, DB = 0.53 and Tg = -57 °C). A highly hydrophilic nature was observed for the synthesized HPG polymer by water contact angle measurement (20° to 35°).

Abstract
The synthesis and full characterisation of four discrete tetrametallic titanium complexes is reported. These well-defined compounds are isostructural in the solid state and share the same general formula: Ti4(μ-O)2L4 (L = 1, 2, 3 or 4). Using a combination of NMR techniques the complexes are found to be stable in solution, even at elevated temperatures. Further studies show that the carboxylate moieties of the supporting amine bis(phenolate) ligands can be displaced by a more strongly coordinating solvent. This reversible process causes the coordinatively saturated Ti4(μ-O)2L4 complexes to separate into two Ti2(μ-O)L2 subunits which we envisaged would be catalytically active. Proof-of-concept experiments establish that all four of these complexes display catalytic activity in the ring-opening polymerisation of rac-lactide. These aggregates can therefore be viewed as air and moisture stable pre-catalysts for a range of reactions.
