Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Harvesting and Concurrent Carbon Capture: A Review for Hygroscopic Materials

As water scarcity becomes a pending global issue, hygroscopic materials prove a significant solution. Thus, there is a good cause following the structure-performance relationship to review the recent development of hygroscopic materials and provide inspirational insight into creative materials. Herein, traditional hygroscopic materials, crystalline frameworks, polymers, and composite materials are reviewed. The similarity in working conditions of water harvesting and carbon capture makes simultaneously addressing water shortages and reduction of greenhouse effects possible. Concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture is likely to become a future challenge. Therefore, an emphasis is laid on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for their excellent performance in water and CO2 adsorption, and representative role of micro- and mesoporous materials. Herein, the water adsorption mechanisms of MOFs are summarized, followed by a review of MOF's water stability, with a highlight on the emerging machine learning (ML) technique to predict MOF water stability and water uptake. Recent advances in the mechanistic elaboration of moisture's effects on CO2 adsorption are reviewed. This review summarizes recent advances in water-harvesting porous materials with special attention on MOFs and expects to direct researchers' attention into the topic of concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture as a future challenge.

Connectivity Analysis of Adsorption Sites in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Facilitated Water Adsorption

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently drawn considerable attention as promising adsorbents to harvest atmospheric water. To achieve an efficient harvesting process, seeking MOFs that demonstrate sharp condensation behavior is the key. Given that the clustering of water molecules in MOFs should be driven by not only MOF-water interactions but also water-water interactions, the spatial arrangement of water adsorption sites in a MOF is therefore crucial. Specifically, this study demonstrates the critical role of continuous adsorption channels (CACs) in MOFs. Such CACs will enable water molecules to stay in proximity and in a continuous manner, thus promoting the formation of hydrogen bonds and, consequently, the clustering of water molecules. We have developed an automatic algorithm to detect CACs based on the energy grid of host-guest interactions and applied the algorithm to more than 2000 diverse structures. The results show that more than 80% of the studied MOFs displaying water condensation at 298 K and 20% relative humidity predicted by Monte Carlo simulations indeed have CACs. The developments herein are anticipated to largely facilitate the future discovery of optimal adsorbents for water harvesting or water-adsorption-related applications in general. A Python-based code for detecting CACs in porous materials is also provided along with this article to employ this approach.

Chemically Stable Hafnium-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Efficient C2H6/C2H4 Separation under Humid Conditions

Realization of ethane-selective porous materials for efficient ethane/ethylene (C₂H₆/C₂H₄) separation is an important task in the petrochemical industry. Although a number of C₂H₆-selective adsorbents have been realized, their adsorption capacity and selectivity might be mostly dampened under humid conditions due to structure decomposition or co-adsorption of water vapor. A desired material should have simultaneously high C₂H₆ uptake and selectivity, excellent water stability, and ultralow water adsorption uptake for industrial applications, but such a material is elusive. Herein, we report a chemically stable hafnium-based material (Hf)DUT-52a, featuring the suitable pore apertures and less hydrophilicity for highly efficient C₂H₆/C₂H₄ separation under humid conditions. Gas sorption results reveal that (Hf)DUT-52a exhibits both high ethane adsorption capacity (4.02 mmol g^-1) and C₂H₆/C₂H₄ selectivity (1.9) at 296 K and 1 bar, which are comparable to the majority of the top-performing materials. Most importantly, the less pore hydrophilicity enables (Hf)DUT-52a to exhibit a negligible water uptake of 0.036 g g^-1 before 40% relative humidity (RH), effectively minimizing the impact of humidity on separation capacity. This material thus shows excellent separation capacity even under 40% RH with a high polymer-grade ethylene production capacity up to 8.43 L kg^-1 at ambient conditions, as evidenced by the breakthrough experiments.

Water and Metal-Organic Frameworks: From Interaction toward Utilization

The steep stepwise uptake of water vapor and easy release at low relative pressures and moderate temperatures together with high working capacities make metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attractive, promising materials for energy efficient applications in adsorption devices for humidity control (evaporation and condensation processes) and heat reallocation (heating and cooling) by utilizing water as benign sorptive and low-grade renewable or waste heat. Emerging MOF-based process applications covered are desiccation, heat pumps/chillers, water harvesting, air conditioning, and desalination. Governing parameters of the intrinsic sorption properties and stability under humid conditions and cyclic operation are identified. Transport of mass and heat in MOF structures, at least as important, is still an underexposed topic. Essential engineering elements of operation and implementation are presented. An update on stability of MOFs in water vapor and liquid systems is provided, and a suite of 18 MOFs are identified for selective use in heat pumps and chillers, while several can be used for air conditioning, water harvesting, and desalination. Most applications with MOFs are still in an exploratory state. An outlook is given for further R&D to realize these applications, providing essential kinetic parameters, performing smart engineering in the design of systems, and conceptual process designs to benchmark them against existing technologies. A concerted effort bridging chemistry, materials science, and engineering is required.

Efficient incorporation and protection of lansoprazole in cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks

Lansoprazole (LPZ) is an acid pump inhibitor, which readily degrades upon acidic or basic conditions and under heating. We investigated here LPZ stability upon incorporation in particles made of cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs). LPZ loaded CD-MOFs were successfully synthesized, reaching high LPZ payloads of 23.2 ± 2.1 wt%, which correspond to a molar ratio of 1:1 between LPZ and γ-CD. The homogeneity of LPZ loaded CD-MOFs in terms of component distribution was confirmed by elemental mapping by STEM-EDX. Both CTAB, the surfactant used in the CD-MOFs synthesis, and LPZ compete for their inclusion in the CD cavities. CTAB allowed obtaining regular cubic particles of around 5 µm with 15 wt% residual CTAB amounts. When LPZ was incorporated, the residual CTAB amount was less than 0.1 wt%, suggesting a higher affinity of LPZ for the CDs than CTAB. These findings were confirmed by molecular simulations. Vibrational circular dichroism studies confirmed the LPZ incorporation inside the CDs. Solid-state NMR showed that LPZ was located in the CDs and that it remained intact even after three years storage. Remarkably, the CD-MOFs matrix protected the drug upon thermal decomposition. This study highlights the interest of CD-MOFs for the incorporation and protection of LPZ.

Hydrophobic Metal-Organic Frameworks: Assessment, Construction, and Diverse Applications

Tens of thousands of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed in the past two decades, and only ≈100 of them have been demonstrated as porous and hydrophobic. These hydrophobic MOFs feature not only a rich structural variety, highly crystalline frameworks, and uniform micropores, but also a low affinity toward water and superior hydrolytic stability, which make them promising adsorbents for diverse applications, including humid CO2 capture, alcohol/water separation, pollutant removal from air or water, substrate-selective catalysis, energy storage, anticorrosion, and self-cleaning. Herein, the recent research advancements in hydrophobic MOFs are presented. The existing techniques for qualitatively or quantitatively assessing the hydrophobicity of MOFs are first introduced. The reported experimental methods for the preparation of hydrophobic MOFs are then categorized. The concept that hydrophobic MOFs normally synthesized from predesigned organic ligands can also be prepared by the postsynthetic modification of the internal pore surface and/or external crystal surface of hydrophilic or less hydrophobic MOFs is highlighted. Finally, an overview of the recent studies on hydrophobic MOFs for various applications is provided and suggests the high versatility of this unique class of materials for practical use as either adsorbents or nanomaterials.

Functionalization of MOF-5 with mono-substituents: effects on drug delivery behavior

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used in drug carrier research due to their tunability. The properties of MOFs can be adjusted through incorporation of mono-substituents to obtain pharmaceutical carriers with excellent properties. In this study, different functional groups of –NH₂, –CH₃, –Br, –OH and –CH₂ Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> CH are connected to MOF-5 to analyse the effect of mono-substituent incorporation on drug delivery properties. The resulting MOFs have similar structures, except for Br–MOF. The pore size of this series of MOFs ranges from 1.04 nm to 1.10 nm. Using oridonin (ORI) as a model drug, introduction of the functional groups appears to have a significant effect on the drug delivery performance of the MOFs. The IRMOFs can be ranked according to drug-loading capacity: MOF-5 > HO–MOF-5 > H₃C–MOF-5 = Br–MOF-5 > H₂N–MOF-5 > CH₂CH–MOF-5. The ORI release from ORI @IRMOFs is explored at two different pH values: 7.4 and 5.5, and the ORI@IRMOFs are ranked according to the cumulative release percentage of ORI: ORI@MOF-5 > ORI@Br–MOF-5 > ORI@H₃C–MOF-5 > ORI@H₂N–MOF-5 > CH₂CH–MOF-5 > ORI@ HO–MOF-5. In particular, the release behaviour of ORI@MOFs is described through a new model. The different drug delivery performance of MOFs may be due to the complex interactions between MOFs and ORI. In addition, the introduction of single substituents does not change the biocompatibility of MOFs. MTT in vitro experiments prove that this series of MOFs has low cytotoxicity. This study shows that the incorporation of single substituents can effectively adjust the drug delivery behaviour of MOFs, which is conducive to realization of personalized drug delivery modes. The introduction of active groups can also facilitate post-synthesis modification to achieve coupling of targeting groups. MOFs incorporated with single substituents perform favorably in terms of use as biomedical drug delivery alternative carriers in effective drug payload and flexible drug release.

Facile syntheses of conjugated polymers for photothermal tumour therapy

Development of photothermal materials which are able to harness sunlight and convert it to thermal energy seems attractive. Besides carbon-based nanomaterials, conjugated polymers are emerging promising photothermal materials but their facile syntheses remain challenging. In this work, by modification of a CBT-Cys click condensation reaction and rational design of the starting materials, we facilely synthesize conjugated polymers poly-2-phenyl-benzobisthiazole (PPBBT) and its dihexyl derivative with good photothermal properties. Under the irradiation of either sunlight-mimicking Xe light or near-infrared laser, we verify that PPBBT has comparable photothermal heating-up speed to that of star material single-wall carbon nanotube. Moreover, PPBBT is used to fabricate water-soluble NPPPBBT nanoparticles which maintain excellent photothermal properties in vitro and photothermal therapy effect on the tumours exposed to laser irradiation. We envision that our synthetic method provides a facile approach to fabricate conjugated polymers for more promising applications in biomedicine or photovoltaics in the near future.

A Switch in the Hydrophobic/Hydrophilic Gas-Adsorption Character of Prussian Blue Analogues: An Affinity Control for Smart Gas Sorption

Porous coordination polymers are molecule-based materials presenting a high degree of tunability, which offer many advantages for targeted applications over conventional inorganic materials. This work demonstrates that the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of Prussian blue analogues having a lipophilic feature may be tuned to optimize the gas adsorption properties. The role of the coordinatively unsaturated metal sites is emphasized through a combination of theoretical and experimental study of water, ethanol, and n-hexane adsorption.

Unlocking the observation of different proton populations in fluorinated polymers by solid-state 1H and 19F double resonance NMR spectroscopy

Nafion proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for fuel cell applications are extensively studied and commercially applied, but their unique proton conduction capabilities are still somewhat unexplained. For studying proton dynamics in situ, molecular level spectroscopic techniques have been of limited utility so far. By solid-state ¹H and ¹⁹F double resonance nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy using the recently revived multiple contact cross-polarization (MC-CP) pulse sequence along with double-quantum ¹H-¹H filtering, high resolution proton populations distinct from the dominant water resonance were observed in Nafion for the first time. This methodology quenches signal decay due to spin-lattice relaxation in the rotating frame and enables magnetization transfer between the relatively mobile ¹H and ¹⁹F spin baths in Nafion. Further studies of these previously unrevealed proton populations will lead to a better understanding of the Nafion proton conduction mechanism and proton exchange processes in general.
