Tunable Construction of Sandwich-Type Double-[1 + 1] and Half-Folded [2 + 2] Schiff-Base Complexes Controlled by the Combination of Primary and Secondary Template Effects

The first-row transition-metal ions Mn²⁺-Cu²⁺ could serve as effective templates to construct three types of double-[1 + 1], [2 + 2], and [1 + 1] Schiff-base dinuclear macrocyclic complexes in the presence of dialdehydes with different pendant arms and a common 1,8-diamine. The extremely flexible nature of macrocyclic ligands allows for the multiple template-directed syntheses, but the final products could be finely tuned by the subtle variations of Mn²⁺-Cu²⁺ ions in a 3d-electronic configuration, radius, and coordination number/geometry as well as the auxiliary (pendant-armed and anionic) template effect at the same time. Two borderlines are observed at the Co²⁺ ion for forming double-[1 + 1] and [2 + 2] metallacycles involving the H₂pdd precursor and the [1 + 1] Cu²⁺ complex for double-[1 + 1] and [2 + 2] macrocycles containing the H₂hpdd unit, respectively. The structural diversity is originated from the non-perfect match between [1 + 1]/[2 + 2] Schiff-base macrocycles and dinuclear metal centers; hence, a compromise between the metal coordination modes and alterations of the ligand conformation takes place.

Alkoxy-Functionalized Schiff-Base Ligation at Aluminum and Zinc: Synthesis, Structures and ROP Capability

The Schiff-base compounds 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(((3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (L1H), 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(((2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (L2H), 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(((2,4-trimethoxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol) (L3H) derived from anilines bearing methoxy substituents have been employed in the preparation of alkylaluminum and zinc complexes. Molecular structure determinations reveal mono-chelate aluminum complexes of the type [Al(Ln)(Me)2] (L1, 1; L2, 2; L3, 3), and bis(chelate) complexes for zinc, namely [Zn(Ln)2] (L1, 5; L2, 6; L3, 7). All complexes have significant activity at 50 °C and higher activity at 100 °C for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) with good control over the molar mass distribution (Mw/Mn < 2) and molecular weight. Complex 1 was found to be the most active catalyst, achieving 99% conversion within 18 h at 50 °C and giving polycaprolactone with high molecular weight; results are compared against aniline-derived (i.e., non-methoxy containing) complexes (4 and 8). Aluminum or zinc complexes derived from L1 exhibit higher activity as compared with complexes derived from L2 and L3. Complex 1 was also tested as an initiator for the copolymerization of ε-CL and glycolide (GL). The CL-GL copolymers have various microstructures depending on the feed ratio. The crosslinker 4,4′-bioxepane-7,7′-dione was used in the polymerization with ε-CL using 1, and well-defined cross-linked PCL was afforded of high molecular weight.

Coordination chemistry of [2 + 2] Schiff-base macrocycles derived from the dianilines [(2-NH2C6H4)2X] (X = CH2CH2, O): structural studies and ROP capability towards cyclic esters

Reaction of the [2 + 2] Schiff-base macrocycles {[2-(OH)-5-(R)-C6H2-1,3-(CH)2][CH2CH2(2-C6H4N)2]}2 (R = Me, L1H2; tBu, L2H2) with FeBr2 afforded the complexes [FeBr(L1H2)]2[(FeBr3)2O]·2MeCN (1·2MeCN), [FeBr(L2H2)][X] (X = 0.5(FeBr3)2O, 2·0.5MeCN, X = Br, 3·5.5MeCN), respectively. Reaction of L2H2 with [KFe(OtBu)3(THF)] (formed in situ from FeBr2 and KOtBu), following work-up, led to the isolation of the complex [Fe(L2)(L2H)]·3MeCN (4·3MeCN), whilst with [CuBr2] afforded [CuBr(L2H2)][CuBr2]·2MeCN (5·2MeCN). Attempts to form mixed Co/Ti species by reaction of [CoBrL2][CoBr3(NCMe)] with TiCl4 resulted in [L2H4][CoBr4]·2MeCN (6·2MeCN). Use of the related oxy-bridged Schiff-base macrocycles {[2-(OH)-5-(R)-C6H2-1,3-(CH)2][O(2-C6H4N)2]}2 (R = Me, L3H2; tBu, L4H2) with CoBr2 led to the isolation of the complexes [(CoBr)2(L3)]·2C3H6O (7·2C3H6O), [Co(NCMe)2(L4H2)][CoBr4]·5MeCN (8·5MeCN), [Co(NCMe)6][CoBr3(MeCN)]2·2MeCN (9·2MeCN). For comparative structural/polymerisation studies, the complexes {CoBr(NCMe)L5}2·2MeCN (10·2MeCN) and [Co(NCMe)2L5]2[CoBr3(NCMe)]2 (11), [FeBr(NCMe)L5]2·2MeCN (12·2MeCN) where L5H = 2,6-(CHO)2-4-tBu-C6H2OH, as well as the chelate-free salt [Fe(NCMe)6][FeBr3OFeBr3] (13) have been isolated and structurally characterized. The ability of these complexes to act as catalysts for the ring opening polymerisation (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and δ-valerolactone (δ-VL) was investigated, as well as co-polymerisation of ε-CL with rac-lactide (r-LA) and vice versa.

One-pot synthesis of cobalt complexes with 2,6-bis(arylimino)phenoxyl/phenthioxyl ligands and catalysis on isoprene polymerization

Several cobalt complexes supported by 2,6-bis(arylimino)phenoxyl/phenthioxyl ligands κ2N,X-Ar[NXN]CoCl(THF) (1a, X = O, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 1b, X = O, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; 2a, X = S, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 2b, X = S, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) were synthesized by direct oxygen(sulfur) insertion into the C-Co bond of the mixed-valence cobalt complexes {κ2C,N,η6-Ar[NCN]Co-κN-CoCl(μ-Cl)}2. Crystallization of 1b in the presence of water gave the hydrolysis product 1b'. Treatment of Ar[NCN]Li with dioxygen followed by the addition of CoCl2 afforded the heteroatomic complexes {κ2N,O-Ar[NON]Co(μ-Cl)2Li}2 (3a, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 3b, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) or κ2N,O-Ar[NON]Co2Cl2(μ-Cl)2Li(THF)2 (4a, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 4b, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) depending on the amount of CoCl2 used. The Co(iii)/Li heterometallic complex 3b' with imino-phenoxyl-amino ligands was formed probably via a redox reaction of 3b. The reactions of Ar[NCN]Li with elemental sulfur and CoCl2 gave κ2N,S-Ar[NSN]Co2Cl2(μ-Cl)2Li(THF)2 (5a, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 5b, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) respectively. These complexes were well characterized by FT-IR and elemental analyses, and the molecular structures of 1b', 3b', 4a, and 4b were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Upon activation with Al2Et3Cl3 in toluene, these complexes showed high activities in isoprene polymerization affording cis-1,4 enriched polymers with a moderate molecular weight (0.85-4.72 × 104 Da).

Synthesis of Biodegradable Polymers: A Review on the Use of Schiff-Base Metal Complexes as Catalysts for the Ring Opening Polymerization (ROP) of Cyclic Esters

This review describes the recent advances (from 2008 onwards) in the use of Schiff-base metal complexes as catalysts for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters. The synthesis and structure of the metal complexes, as well as all aspects concerning the polymerization process and the characteristics of the polymers formed, will be discussed.

Turning on ROP activity in a bimetallic Co/Zn complex supported by a [2+2] Schiff-base macrocycle

Homo-dinuclear Co and Zn complexes derived from the macrocycle LH2, {[2-(OH)-5-(R)-C6H2-1,3-(CH)2][CH2CH2(2-C6H4N)2]}2 (R = Me, tBu), revealed near inactivity for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of the cyclic esters δ-valerolactone (δ-VL) and ε-caprolactone (ε-CL). By contrast, the hetero-bimetallic complexes [LCo(NCMe)(μ-Br)ZnBr]·nMeCN (n = 3 or 3.25) were found to be efficient catalysts for the ROP of ε-CL and δ-VL.

Synthetic Evolution of the Multifarene Cavity from Planar Predecessors

The stepwise evolution of curved multifarene structures from planar precursors is demonstrated, highlighting three architectural design elements: 1) employment of various aromatic units, 2) changing the hybridization of the linking atoms from sp² to sp³ , and 3) rigidification of the system by the introduction of five-membered rings. Similar design elements have been employed to transform graphene sheets into curved carbon structures. Specifically, the stepwise synthetic evolution of multifarene[2+2], which has a curved, quite rigid structure, begins with a planar, tetraimine precursor, conversion to pairs of vicinal diamines, and the transformation of these pairs to cyclic thiourea groups. This process was probed by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Since varying the carbonylation conditions resulted in carbamates or thiocarbamates rather than the urea or thiourea isomers, the isomeric interconversion was studied both experimentally and by DFT computations. The carbamate versus urea preference was found to reflect either kinetic or thermodynamic control, respectively.

Isatin based macrocyclic Schiff base ligands as novel candidates for antimicrobial and antioxidant drug design: In vitro DNA binding and biological studies

In the present work, five macrocyclic compounds, C₁₈H₁₂N₂O₄ (1), C₃₈H₂₄N₈O₆ (1a), C₃₈H₂₄N₈O₄S₂ (1b), C₄₀H₃₂N₈O₄ (2a) and C₄₈H₃₂N₈O₄ (2b) have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1D & 2D NMR and electron spray ionization mass spectral analysis. The DNA binding ability of these compounds were investigated in vitro by UV-Visible, fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and viscosity measurements. The results indicate that these compounds possess strong DNA binding affinity via intercalation, while the order of binding strength followed the trend 2b (1.52 ± 0.06 × 10⁵ M^-1) > 2a (1.12 ± 0.11 × 10⁵ M^-1) > 1b (1.05 ± 0.04 × 10⁵ M^-1) > 1a (0.97 ± 0.14 × 10⁴ M^-1) > 1 (0.75 ± 0.21 × 10⁴ M^-1). The radical scavenging potencies of the compounds were explored by employing DPPH, OH and NO assays, in which 1a exhibited highest inhibitory effect on the radicals (IC₅₀ = 23.59 μM (DPPH), 26.14 μM (OH), 28.41 μM (NO)). The in vitro antibacterial studies showed that these compounds have the potential to arrest the growth of bacteria, among which, 1a was found to be vulnerable against the bacterial stains. In addition, in silico molecular docking stimulations were also performed to position these compounds into the active sites of bacterial membrane proteins. The results of in vitro and in silico investigations reveal that the compounds apprehend the bacterial growth significantly. The data obtained from this piece of work would be helpful to design antibacterial drugs incorporating isatin based macrocyclic frameworks.

Structural studies of Schiff-base [2 + 2] macrocycles derived from 2,2′-oxydianiline and the ROP capability of their organoaluminium complexes

Structures of [2 + 2] Schiff base macrocycles and aluminium complexes thereof, together with ROP studies using the latter are reported.
