Abstract
A lignin-derived ligand, bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-propylbenzyl)glycine (DHEG), was synthesized from 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol (dihydroeugenol (DHE)) and the amino acid glycine. Two mononuclear iron and manganese complexes of DHEG were prepared, characterized, and employed for the oxidation of chlorite to chlorine dioxide in aqueous solution. Peroxyacetic acid (PAA) was used as a "green" oxidant in the redox reactions to initiate the formation of high-valent Fe and Mn (IV)-OH intermediates. EPR studies verified the formation of a high-valent MnIV species. Both Fe and Mn complexes catalyzed chlorite oxidation with bimolecular rate constants of 32 and 144 M-1 s-1, respectively, at pH 4.0 and 25 °C. The Mn complex was found to be more efficient for chlorite oxidation with a turnover frequency of 17 h-1 and remained active during subsequent additions of PAA. The rate of ClO2 decomposition with PAA/Mn-DHEG was first order in PAA and increased significantly as pH increased. A mechanism that accounts for all observations is presented.

Abstract
Two manganese(III) compounds were studied as catalysts for the reaction of carbon dioxide with propylene oxide, styrene oxide, and cyclohexene oxide, and formed cyclic carbonate products selectively under solvent free conditions in the presence of an ionic co-catalyst such as TBAB or PPNCl. Variable temperature kinetic studies allowed the activation energy for propylene carbonate formation to be determined (64 kJ mol−1). The catalysts showed good stability in these reactions and overall turnover numbers (TON) of up to 6000 were observed. The complexes showed low activity for the aerobic oxidation of 4-methyoxybenzylalcohol to the corresponding aldehyde, achieving up to 40% conversion in 72 h. However, near quantitative conversion of 1,2-diphenyl-2-methoxyethanol to provide up to 90% yield of benzaldehyde could be achieved over the course of 5 days. Both complexes showed similar reactivity in the two catalytic processes, and this is likely due to the weakly coordinating nature of the pendant donor within the tetradentate ligand.

Abstract
Dinuclear bis(R'-(R''-iminomethyl)phenoxide) copper complexes L2Cu2(μ-OR)2 were prepared from the reaction of copper methoxide with ROH and LH (ROH = dimethylaminoethanol or pyridylmethanol, R' = H, 4,6-tBu, 1,3-Cl, R'' = benzyl, cyclohexyl, diphenylmethyl and 2,6-dimethylphenyl). Preparation was complicated by formation of homoleptic L2Cu and only 9 of the 24 possible combinations could be prepared. All complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and crystallized as dinuclear penta-coordinated complexes. Homoleptic complexes L2Cu were inactive in lactide polymerization at room temperature. Most heteroleptic complexes showed modest to good activities with full conversion in less than 6 h at room temperature. Complexes with R' = H showed poor molecular weight control, complexes with R' = Cl were inactive in polymerization. In pyridylmethoxide-containing complexes, only one alkoxide initiated chain growth. All complexes produced atactic polymer.

Abstract
A series of alkyl aluminium complexes based on heteroscorpionate ligands were designed as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation of cyclic esters and ring-opening copolymerisation of epoxides and anhydrides. Treatment of AlX3 (X = Me, Et) with ligands bpzbeH [bpzbe = 1,1-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-3,3-dimethyl-2-butoxide], bpzteH [bpzte = 2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-1-para-tolylethoxide], and (R,R)-bpzmmH [(R,R)-bpzmm = (1R)-1-{(1R)-6,6-dimethyl-bicyclo[3.1.1]-2-hepten-2-yl}-2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)ethoxide] for 2 hours at 0 °C afforded the mononuclear dialkyl aluminium complexes [AlMe2{κ2-bpzbe}] (1), [AlEt2{κ2-bpzbe}] (2), [AlMe2{κ2-(R,R)-bpzmm}] (3) and [AlEt2{κ2-(R,R)-bpzmm}] (4), and the dinuclear dialkyl complexes [AlMe2{κ2-bpzte}]2 (5) and [AlEt2{κ2-bpzte}]2 (6). The molecular structures of the new complexes were determined by spectroscopic methods and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The alkyl-containing aluminium complexes can act as highly efficient single-component initiators for the ring-opening polymerisation of ε-caprolactone and l-lactide and for the ring-opening copolymerisation of cyclohexene oxide and phthalic anhydride to give a range of biodegradable polyesters.
